It’s time to round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from this midweek FA Cup fifth-round action.

Nine top-flight teams were involved, with only four successfully reaching the quarter-finals.

Whilst the top link above discusses how results affect Blank Gameweeks 28 and 32, plus the outstanding fixtures that will/may need to be rearranged, the below focuses on the matches themselves.

KANE’S ‘ILLNESS’

One of the three sides shocked by lower-league opposition was Spurs, losing 1-0 at Sheffield United. A strong starting line-up featured the likes of Son Heung-min (£11.6m), Ivan Perisic (£5.5m), Richarlison (£8.4m) and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£5.5m) but England captain Harry Kane (£11.7m) was named as a substitute.

He was eventually called upon after 65 minutes and assistant head coach Cristian Stellini – still filling in while Antonio Conte recovers – admitted afterwards that Kane needed a rest after recently playing through illness.

“We need to look in the medium period, we have many games. Harry Kane played in the last six games, one time with fever, one time with a [throat] problem, we have to take care of our best player.

“He was ill one week ago and he didn’t train on some days because he was very ill. After he played a game with a fever he was very ill, so he didn’t. For that reason we decided to keep him on the bench and maybe play a part of the match. A player like this also needs to work not only to play.” – Cristian Stellini

It emphasises just how vital Kane is to Spurs because their squad depth means he couldn’t even get a full rest. With a top four spot still to secure, FPL managers planning to sacrifice Kane for Ivan Toney (£7.6m) or Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) may change their minds now that the north London side has avoided a Blank Gameweek 28.

FODEN’S FOOT PROBLEMS

When almost 800,000 managers bought in-form Phil Foden (£8.0m) for Gameweek 13, only to see him benched for the next three matches, it ruined him as an FPL prospect.

Since then, just five starts have arrived from 15 Manchester City league games but he’s now started the last two plus Tuesday’s 3-0 cup win at Bristol City. Furthermore, a goal and assist away to Bournemouth has been immediately followed by two strikes at Ashton Gate.

Post-match, he discussed the recent foot injury that put him in a bad place.

“I am feeling much better in my feet. It’s not easy sometimes when you play with discomfort in your feet. I feel 100% fit now and comfortable, so hopefully I can come back into the team and help them as much as possible.

“It has definitely [been frustrating], it has been one of the lowest parts of my career but everyone goes through them, it’s how you react.” – Phil Foden

MAN UNITED ROTATE BUT FERNANDES PLAYS 90

Parading their Carabao Cup trophy before kick-off, Manchester United made six changes to the side that played the final. Marcus Rashford (£7.2m), Casemiro (£4.9m) and Raphael Varane (£4.8m) moved to the bench, whilst Luke Shaw‘s (£5.3m) knock kept him out of the squad.

It was interesting to see Bruno Fernandes (£9.8m) once again play the whole match. Apart from a couple of stoppage-time substitutions and a one-match suspension, the Portuguese playmaker has played every league minute of Man United’s season.

He’s yet to miss a single United league game through injury since he joined three years ago.

Fernandes’ free-kick set up Casemiro’s disallowed goal, shortly before his corner forced Nayef Aguerd (£4.8m) to head past his own goalkeeper.

DE ZERBI ON FERGUSON

18-year-old Brighton and Hove Albion forward Evan Ferguson (£4.6m) scored the goal which eliminated Stoke City on Tuesday night.

Since coming on against Arsenal on New Year’s Eve, Ferguson has bagged four goals and two assists from nine appearances, earning praise from manager Roberto De Zerbi.

“He is unique for us in terms of quality, in terms of characteristics. He knows very well the way to score. I think he can and he has to improve, in the quality of play, in ball possession, to keep the ball better. But he is 18, he will improve for sure because I know the guy, I know his passion, his attitude. I have no doubt.” – Roberto De Zerbi

Having an in-form cheap enabler sounds perfect during this spell of popular Wildcard and Bench Boost usage, where the Seagulls have Double Gameweeks 27 and 29, but Ferguson isn’t a reliable starter and now has further competition from fit-again Danny Welbeck (£6.5m).

However, should Brighton overcome quarter-final opponents Grimsby Town, they will have even more Double Gameweeks to arrange, adding Man United (H), Man City (H) and Newcastle United (a) into proceedings.

No wonder Kaoru Mitoma (£5.3m), who assisted Ferguson’s midweek goal, is one of this week’s most-bought players.

SOLOMON SCORES AGAIN

Israel international Manor Solomon (£4.9m) joined Fulham on loan during the summer but a long knee injury had kept him out until recently. Yet what a reintroduction he’s had!

Four goals from four consecutive matches, with his only start being the Tuesday night win over Leeds United that ensured both they and Liverpool have a Blank Gameweek 28.

The most recent two goals were similar and brilliant, moving from the left flank to the corner of the box before curling beautiful right-footers into the net.

Although no future Double Gameweeks have yet been announced (Fulham will get at least one double), Solomon could become a late-season FPL differential, coming in at slightly more than Andreas Pereira (£4.4m) but with more of a goal-scoring eye. Up next is Brentford (a), with Solomon’s fitness improving by the week and his form surely set to see him start a league game soon.

Settled on something I like on possible WC. Look solid enough?

    GW27, 5 doubles
    GW28; 10 players (plus 2FTs)
    GW29; 12 doubles with a possible Kane+Ode >> Watkins+Bruno.

    Kepa, Sanchez
    Tripps, Gabriel, Mee, Estu, Botman
    Saka, Maddison, Rash, Ode, Mitoma
    Haaland, Kane, Toney.

GW32 could force you to swap a GK as Chelsea and Brighton could both blank

Not really a problem. You could get a new keeper for the run-in by then. I also have Kepa and Sanch because i like the coverage through to 31.

So I used my WC last game week. I regret going Gabriel over Zinchenko and I sold Martinelli for Odegaard lol I would definitely go Martinelli over Odegaard, Marti will fire for a while now IMO. I also sold Kane but I stick by that, he tends to get around 6 points which i dont think is enough for his price when Watkins and Toney look great until 29. I would hold fire on Maddison personally. Dont bother planning too much, I used my WC and woke up the next day to Nunez, March and Estupian all being injured. Mings over Mee and Raya over Sanchez?

Is a Villa defender worth considering if on WC? Good fixture in BGW28 and has a DGW, even if not the best of fixtures

I'm weighing it up. I like 28 but the double doesnt inspire a BB in 29. But best alternative is a Chelsea defender and who knows which CBs start, and i don't want to double with Kepa. Castagne a possible option?

Thoughts for this squad please & any changes you’d make

    Raya/Forster
    Zinchenko, Estupinan, Royal, Trippier, Mee
    Martinelli, Saka, March, Mitoma, Rashford
    Haaland, Kane, Watkins
    £4.3M in the bank

Is that a WC? Don't fancy risking Toney? Still a bit wary on Marteneli's minutes. Would probably go with Odgaard personally

        Yeah, confirmed wildcard.

In two minds at the moment. Will see how Toney gets on this week and bring him in if needs be. Going with Watkins form and being a spurs fan I’m probably bias to selling Kane.
Agree with the minutes for Martinelli, but again I’m going with form and don’t want to complete stack out the midfield if it goes t*ts up!

Not too much different compared to most but a couple of differentials to spice things up and make it a bit more exciting. Royal is up for player of the month so why not!
I think Lloris is expected back by GW 29 so I will be looking to change I imagine.
        Thank you!

Would you WC this team? I'm a bit loathe to "follow" the content creators, but starting to think it's the best option for my team or I'll likely be pretty weak in 27 and 29, even with hits.

    Kepa, Ward
    TAA, Perraud, Bueno, Tark, Trippier
    Salah, Rashford, Odgaard, Saka, Mahrez
    Haaland, Gnoto, Nketiah

My team is similar and I am determined not to do it. Probably silly of me, but sure can navigate 27/28/29 then deadend into 32, wildcard 33. Think it depends on your rank. Last couple of weeks I have dropped to 140k. Don’t see how I can gain substantial ground back by following the crowd. I’m not a content creator with rank history to protect so if it blows up in my face and I end up 1m who cares.
Might be different if you are doing super well and want to protect where you are.

Given the cup results I've decided on the early WC strategy to set up for upcoming weeks and save FH for later. The only decision I need to take is whether to WC26 or 27. Here's my team if I use the FT this week:

    Kepa
    TAA Robertson Trippier
Saka Odegaard Martinelli Rashford Mac Allister
    Haaland Kane

It looks very similar to WC26 template starting 11s, so I am thinking about just doing my transfer and waiting for more information to WC27.

    A) Use WC27 (have team above for 26)
    B) Use WC26

Rough fixtures for your defence, but if you're not sure about the CS prospects of BHA/BRE this week, or just want more info, you could get away with waiting a week

Apart from Trippier I would say they are ok. Is double Brentford defense (I assume that's part of the WC26 template) better than TAA & Robertson? Also I would get to keep Martinelli vs BOU instead of Toney.

    A) Darwin -> Toney
    B) Darwin + Bueno -> Toney + Estupinan (-4, start over Lewis)

    E) Other

    Lewis - White - Tarkowski
    Salah - Saka - Odegaard - Rashford

True lol. If I started with Watkins I’d end up doing Haaland > Felix in 28 so I’d only be gaining his (AVL+LIV) double instead of Kane’s (eve) single which now that I’ve written it out looks bad.

It’s just after seeing this Kane ill news above I’m less enthusiastic about him

Brighton fans, can you help figuring out the prospects?

MacAllistair is posting the best stats since the restart but he's been played deeper during last game. Will he revert to the 10 role with Welbeck and Gross? Does it depend on Caicedo fitness? If caicedo starts then McA plays in 10?
Solly March also posting very good numbers but could he be covering a LB position if estupinan is injured?
Mitoma nulbers have dropped lately but Zerbi said it's hard to sub him off dince he's that kind of player capable of displaying a later winner out of nowhere

    1. Tonyawesome69
      • 7 Years

Pretty much boils down to Gross not filling in at FB

    2. The Mentaculus

Caicedo will always play centre mid - its his partner there that keeps getting shuffled around. Usually it would be Groß, but he also covers both FB positions. March has played RWB but I highly doubt he'll play RB/LB except in an emergency. I think Mac will mostly play as a 10 while Lallana is out (long-term), but he can play alongside Caicedo if Groß is needed elsewhere. Other options for the 10 would be Sarmiento (generally a sub) or Welbeck (happened a couple of times recently). I've seen enough of Mitoma now not too worry about a couple of weeks' dip in stats, still prefer him as my 1st choice BHA mid

One more week of scouting to decide between March & Mac. Mac has got a lot of chances in the couple of games I've seen him playing as a 10 but its a small sample. Its a really close call though, might be leaning slightly towards March still

I've currently got Mac and Mar on my WC. I think the same re: Mac (probably most likely. to consistently return) and then it's between one of the two more-explosive assets. And I'm going with Mar cos funds are tight.

Current 50/50 dilemmas I have and other WC26 may have.

    - Kepa v Areola (2nd GK)
Not sure who to pick yet

    - Henry v Pinnock
Saving funds and not getting Mee. Leaning towards Henry as he is considered 4th/5th def and want to go for attacking upside

    - Gabriel v Zinchenko
On Gabriel, nailed 90 mins set and forget in 3ATB setup for my team

    - Botman v Schar
Botman for cheap option as he is considered 4th/5th def

    - 2 of Mac Allister v Mitoma v March
Mac Allister playing 10 and on pens is my top pick. Undecided with Mitoma/March

    - Ode v Martinelli
Ode long term pick but Martinelli has a high ceiling in the short term as Arteta preferred LW/CF comho with Trossard.

Depends if you are still interested in double Brighton defence. Current draft has Sanchez and Estupinan

      1. Kepa easy for me as a WHU fan

      2. Speaking to Brighton fans I know they don’t like Mac as a 10. I’m sticking by March and Mitoma

      3. If it looks like Jesus will return to the 11 some time before GW28 then I’m going odegaard, otherwise Martinelli will be a fun short term shout

Lol missed out 2 points ffs

        A) Zinchenko Vs gab - Zinchenko for me as only a short term punt until I move on to shaw in 29

        B) Botman Vs Schär - I have Lodi in their place atm but ready to move him to whoever looks nicer of these when the extra double gets announced

Yeah I don't want to book in too many transfers so need to get the balance right between short and long term picks. Going Gabriel gives me the option of both Shaw in or keep long term

What's the reason why they don't like Mac Allister at 10?

I'm likely eyeing up 2nd Arsenal mid to Maddison in 29 so Martinelli could fit the bill

Too slow for their style apparnelty but I suppose it’s RDZ’s opinion that matters more than theirs. Although dropping him to CDM in the cup to accommodate Mitoma at no.10 last night makes me think Mac won’t be nailed there going forwards every game.

Yeah Martinelli/odegaard > Bruno in 29 for me

That's interesting fans are not keen on him playing 10. Issue is RDZ will play Gross at FB which will push Mac Allister back to CM.

Actually that's meant to be Bruno, not Maddison.

Dunk (purely cos the minor flag) Trippier Saliba Davies Shaw
Saka Rashford Mac March Martinelli (moves to Maddison at some point)

Kepa over Areola, although I do suspect Chelsea defence might regress without Silva. If its just for BB, have you considered Navas?

Henry I think for attacking threat.

Zinchenko. Arsenal are taking all their corners short at the moment so I think Zinc pips Gabriel on attacking threat now as he's heavily involved in these.

Schär if you can afford but no strong preference.

Mitoma, and... still a little undecided on the 2nd, leaning March.

With Nketiah no longer starting, I think Martinelli might be slightly preferable now. Link up with Trossard looks great.

Macallister won’t keep playing 10 imo, like there’s no guarantee
I think Welbeck had started a game at 10 not too long ago with Evan up top, and Macallister cdm
If he keeps playing at CAM he’s easily the best option but with welbeck back and fit, I’m not sure he will consistently keep playing there.

I can afford Shaw and Bruno GW29, but can't get Maddison so one less player GW28 then.

That is what i would go for this week. I used my WC last week and have the below (benching Salah lol). Like you, will probably wait until 29 for them. Want Maddison too but would have to lose Odegaard.....

          Raya
          Gabriel Estupian Mings

Personally no. You can navigate with that lot.

Re the goal keeps, obviously all personal opinion, but Kepa plays in 28, doubles in 29, then in 32 when Chelsea blank Ward is home to Wolves.
