We continue to assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Gameweek 26 in our Scout Notes series.

Here, we focus on Liverpool v Manchester United.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

SALAH, DARWIN + GAKPO RUN RIOT

Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) starred in Liverpool’s stunning 7-0 win over Man Utd on Sunday, as he became the Reds’ record Premier League goalscorer, moving ahead of Robbie Fowler.

In a devastating attacking display, the Egyptian looked on it right from the start and served up four attacking returns (two goals, two assists) and maximum bonus, earning his owners a whopping 21 points.

Salah’s ownership is down to 25% in the top 10k, with many FPL managers on a Wildcard choosing to sell him ahead of Gameweek 26. However, Sunday’s display was a painful reminder of his haul potential, with an appealing trip to relegation-threatened Bournemouth up next, where he also scored 21 points in the 2017/18 season.

“129 goals, that is insane. What an unbelievable number. He is a special player. We appreciate him now but in the future people will look back and be wow, we witnessed something really special.” – Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah’s record

Cody Gakpo (£7.7m) and Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) also scored two goals each, with substitute Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) adding a seventh late on. The former has now found the net four times in as many Gameweeks.

Jurgen Klopp’s side played with renewed confidence and picked apart Man Utd, with seven of their eight shots on target hitting the net.

“It was one of the best performances for a long, long time. In a way I think everybody saw how good the boys can be. I think nobody was in doubt about Darwin’s future impact when he settles because he is a real force of nature, Cody [Gakpo] plays in the most difficult area of the pitch against a man-marking side which is super tricky, but how he keeps himself on his feet there and has the overview of everybody else, Mo is Mo [Salah].

Harvey [Elliott] played a top game the other night against Wolves, had the highest counter-pressing outcome of any player in the Premier League this season so if that is not a qualification for starting again then I don’t know one to be honest, and is for us super important on the ball as well. Hendo [Henderson] didn’t start the last game, what a performance tonight, absolutely incredible, and Fab [Fabinho] is back. Last line is in a better moment as well so it’s like it has to be. How I said, we have to make these results count with the result of the next game. That’s what we try.” – Jurgen Klopp

“A few months ago everyone thought it was a good moment to play Liverpool – you can’t say it publicly but everyone thought it – because they felt we were struggling a lot but now it is less of a good moment, we look much more like ourselves.  It is important that everyone knows we are here and we are still alive.” – Jurgen Klopp

FIVE CLEAN SHEETS IN A ROW

Sunday’s win was Liverpool’s fourth in five league games. They have also kept five straight clean sheets. It’s perhaps a bit too soon to say they are ‘back’ defensively. After all, they have conceded 10 Opta-defined ‘big chances’ from Gameweek 23 onwards and were hammered at home by Real Madrid recently.

Still, they are moving in the right direction again, and it’s worth noting Man Utd had previously scored in each of their last 15 Premier League games.

Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) was particularly impressive. He provided the assist for Gakpo’s opener, created three chances and regularly got forward on the overlap.

“Good! Look, that’s a top situation. I think everybody saw how good Kostas [Tsimikas] is in the last game, he had a real impact and set up a super goal. But Robbo is Robbo and he had now 90 minutes’ break and I thought he benefitted from that today. It was a top performance, like really a flying Scotsman performance!” – Jurgen Klopp on Andrew Robertson

The result sees Liverpool move above Newcastle United into fifth place in the Premier League, albeit having played a game more than Eddie Howe’s side.

UNITED SUFFER NIGHTMARE AFTERNOON

Man Utd had come into the game on an 11-game unbeaten run, but were blown away by Liverpool in the second half.

They did have chances in the opening 45 minutes, with Bruno Fernandes (£9.8m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) – via an excellent Luke Shaw (£5.3m) pass – both missing presentable openings, but quickly fell apart after.

They have had a busy schedule of late, although Erik ten Hag refused to blame fatigue.

“No, nothing to do with that because we can bring the performance four days ago, seven days ago. It’s nothing to do with that. It’s just about the head. We know Liverpool are a good transition team. When you are 1-0 down, you can’t lose your head and bring them into the transition moments. We did not make the right decisions in the defensive actions. That is unprofessional. We have high standards and that’s not what we showed today in the second half.” – Erik ten Hag

There is no doubt United are a much, much better side under ten Hag, yet they have now conceded six and seven goals in away games against last season’s top two, as well as three at current leaders Arsenal, highlighting their defensive issues when they come up against top sides.

Next up for United is Thursday’s UEFA Europa League meeting with Real Betis, which is followed by a match against Southampton in Gameweek 27. A blank follows (they play Fulham in the FA Cup), before they ‘double’ in Gameweek 29.

“I don’t have an explanation. In the first half we were quite in control. Second half at the start we gave two goals away. There was no team anymore. We didn’t stick to the plan. There were 11 individuals. I don’t know, it’s really bad. I have given my opinion [to the players]. It was unprofessional. You always have to stick together as a team. We didn’t do that. There was no discipline. You have can setbacks but you have to stick together and do your job.

We made the wrong decisions. That for me is unprofessional. I’m really disappointed and angry. We let our fans down. As a squad, as a team, you cannot allow this. You have to stick together and support each other and fight for each other. You have to defend. We didn’t do that and for me that is really unprofessional. We have made a lot of progress but you see what happens when you don’t keep standards. What I have said in the dressing room is that this is unacceptable. But also it is only one game. We will bounce back. This team is strong enough and we will reset and bounce back.” – Erik ten Hag

Morning guys. Another horrendous FF week. Would like some advice please. Start which 3 from 5?

    Akanji Tarks White Badiashile Trippier

Or take a -4 to move Akanji to Estupinan for a doubler? Currently I only have Toney and will be using my 1 FT to do Andreas to a Brighton mid. On the latter, Mitoma or Mac Allister? If United didn’t have the Saints next week I’d be losing Bruno F and getting both after the shower yesterday but I feel a -8 is excessive. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Its probably worth it I guess since Akanji has no attacking threat, low chance of backfiring. Go for that.

Just that, you will still have one less player for blank even after a hit.

Glad Mitrovic didn't drop last night, but I suspect he'll drop in the next few days.

Going to be tight for me to sell him and get Toney in for the DGW.

Got 2 FT and Ward as back up keeper, so could either downgrade Akanji or Kepa to fund Toney move, provided he comes through tonight's game unscathed.

      Depends on your 2nd keeper.

It sounds like Steele is now Due Zerbi's first choice going forward.

So, then, if you have a nailed on back up (ie Ward), I see no reason not to go for Steele. He has the better DGW fixtures.

Don't feel about wc ing out salah Darwin, coz wc ed with a view of getting through 27 double 28 blank 29 bb. 42 with Tobey and Henry to go. But that result oh my god, as a united fan still can't get over. If it was last season then we were prepared. But not this time. Horrible feeling.

last week, plan was to sell salah to a BRI mid for DGW27 and bring Kane for BGW28 with the funds

hard to stick to the plan after Salah's display yesterday but.. well..

Would you sell salah --> BRI mid (C) ?

I wasn't able to watch the game but I read Mitoma got the points but Solly March got the the situations and on another day he would be the one who had hauled?

      Wouldn't sell Salah

You can still get a Brighton mid, but they all tend to spread the wealth, so just pick one of the three M's, March, MacAllister or Mitoma and set and forget.

There is quite a hype around Estupian which I don't really get. His stats in terms of assist and goals are not that great. Plus some rotation risk

I'm going with Dunk instead. He seems to be nailed and always good for a goal from set pieces (previous seasons).

Thanks everyone and apologies for the lazy post. Indeed, his name is Estupiñán and otherwise I was not precise enough as well.

What I meant is, according to whoscored he played 130 games (mainly in Spain), had one goal and 10 assists. Rotation risk because he hasn't started all BHA games and less minutes compared to Dunk.

Some of what you're saying needs a bit more context - e.g. he wasn't quite a regular starter under Potter, but since De Zerbi has been playing 4 at the back he's become really nailed and one their key attacking players. He's in the top 5 defenders for chance creation since the WC break. But I think the easiest way to get it is just to watch a bit of him & see how he bombs forward

          Well that's useful. Thanks.

I think it might also help that Mitoma is a regular starter now.

I still have my WC so can bring him in after GW29 if he goes crazy. For the DGWs I will now have to stick with Dunk.

          Cheers

Hmm its a close one. Your first 11 looks strong for 27 & 29, but maybe the bench is a bit weak to BB29. You could probably fix that with a couple of hits if you wanted to save the WC, but then it might be tricky to balance this with getting a couple more starters for GW28. And with limited funds it might be tricky to replace cheapies like Bueno/Gnonto. If you're not planning to BB29 then I think would keep the WC for later. If you are, maybe draft a WC team & compare it / post it here for further feedback?

Yeah I thought it was bit weird. Most of the attention was on the form of Arsenal and captaining their players though.

Saka was supposed to have at least a brace against lowly BOU.

Only single returns in last few games mixed with none at all for a long while since restart.
None could have predicted yesterday's scoreline plus Salah's haul.

Salah’s haul was always on the cards, We forgot how much he loves playing against Utd. Wasn’t expecting that scoreline tho 7-0!

Same. Didn’t really consider as cap because of Liverpool’s form this season, maybe that’s why he wasn’t part of the article. I captained him last season & the season before vs Utd… If only I did the same this season 😆

There was a great interview with Salah talking about his potentially breaking the goal record for Liverpool and how fantastic it would be against Man U, rivals and all that ... his record against Man U was mentioned and if anyone was going to score in that game it was going to be Salah.

Man U having a couple of clean sheets against Leeds and Leicester papered over the cracks of a team that will concede goals, especially with Liverpool getting players back from injury.

Selling Salah on such an early WC with Utd & Bournemouth coming up seemed fraught with danger.

Bueno to a Brentford defender and Bailey to a Brighton mid for -4, bench Ode and White. Is this the correct plan for next week?

Maybe just a midfielder move and no hit.

Think so. I don't mind holding fringe/questionable Villa assets for their GW28 fixtures (this is what I'm doing with Moreno) but I would definitely prefer Mitoma

Wild! I do quite like their DGW & I'm not sure who to (C) in 28 yet but this feels a bit punty for me

I also considered him or another Chelsea mid on WC instead of Maddison. Not really sure about that punt though. Also not sure you'd captain him in 28 with Kane vs SOU.

Bus team set, any changes & bench correct?

    Best Cap Mitoma, or Brentford?

    Raya,
    Mee, Trippier, Purvis,
    Saka, Ode, Mitoma, Rashford
    Kane, Toney, Haaland

    Sanchez, Maddy, Zinch, Royale,

    1.6

Curious to get your thoughts on this WC team:

    DDG Raya
    Trippier Botman Chilwell Estupinan Mee
    Rashford Saka Maddison March Mitoma
    Kane Toney Felix

Plan is to BB29 and FH32. This gets me 10 starters in BGW28 with 1 FT and potentially 14 or 15 doublers for BB29 for free.
DDG instead of Kepa as I would be playing that GK spot only from DGW29 onwards. I like United's 29 and future doubles more.
March vs Mitoma vs Mac Allister is still up for debate.
Felix could very well be Watkins but I think I'd like to take the punt on him until GW30 when he will become Haaland again.

Salah seems to have been poor for most of the season but is now the top scoring midfielder. Mental.

He hasn't been poor - he just hasn't been quite good enough for his price in FPL. Up until now, maybe. But with Haaland suffering a relative dip in point scoring recently he may become a viable captain option once again.

Guys, if I bench boost in Gwk 28 without using my free transfer, would I have 2 free transfers for Gwk 29? Technically speaking I should do as I carried one free transfer from Gwk 28.

Looks like everyone will have something close to triple Brentford & Brighton & here I am with Mitoma(C) Raya & Mbuemo after my 2 FT. Should I expect a red arrow?

    1. Big Mike

Mitoma (c) yes, Raya yes, Mbuemo no. Solly March or Mac would be a better option.

If you have 2 free transfers then bring in March and Raya. Or Toney if you don't already have him.
