The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League (UCL) second legs begin this week – which means it’s also time for the competition’s official Fantasy game to return.

With prizes dished out every Matchday, UCL Fantasy also offers an incentive for managers to belatedly enter a team even if you are yet to sign up.

Here, our in-house expert FPL Reactions takes a look at Matchday 8 and its most appealing assets.

GOALKEEPERS

Dortmund play in the first games of Matchday 8 so it could be wise to select Gregor Kobel (€5.0m) as Chelsea have been struggling for goals this season. In fact, they have failed to find the net in six of their last ten matches in all competitions. If Kobel fails to return, then he is an easy switch to Napoli’s Alex Meret (€5.0m) who has his own six-in-ten record for clean sheets.

DEFENDERS

Benfica face a struggling Club Brugge whom they comfortably beat 2-0 in the first leg, so tripling up on their cheap, enabling defenders could bring high rewards. Alexander Bah (€4.5m), Nicolas Otamendi (€4.7m) and Alejandro Grimaldo (€5.3m) all make the squad, with the latter being particularly essential.

AC Milan may have suffered a recent slump but that could be on the turn. The Italian side has managed four clean sheets in the last five matches and playing with a wing-back system has been key to it. For that reason, Theo Hernandez (€5.9m) makes the cut, having managed to score in his most recent league match against Fiorentina.

Napoli’s defensive dominance means it could also be worth doubling up on their backline with Giovanni Di Lorenzo (€5.1m), who has returned in all but two of his Champions League games so far.

MIDFIELDERS

Real Madrid dismantled Liverpool 5-2 in the first leg and Vinicius Junior (€10.0m) netted twice and assisted, leading to a huge 17-point return. The Brazilian is a must-have going into the second leg.

Benfica have been excellent this season both domestically and on the big stage. Because of this and their free-scoring frontline, Joao Mario (€6.3m) is a brilliant buy. The winger takes his team’s penalties and has accumulated five returns in seven Champions League matches so far.

Meanwhile, Bayern have averaged three goals during their last 10 matches and one of the best ways to get attacking coverage is through in-form Kingsley Coman (€8.0m). The winger has banked five goals and one assist in his last five matches.

Liverpool may have been humbled by Real Madrid but it didn’t stop Mohamed Salah (€11.3m) from picking up his fifth consecutive double-digit haul. The Egyptian is a different monster in the Champions League and his uptake in domestic form needs to be considered alongside this incredible run.

The fifth midfielder belongs to Napoli. They swept Frankfurt aside in their 2-0 first-leg victory and it arguably should have been more. The free-scoring side has managed 23 goals in their last ten matches and one of the biggest contributors is Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (€5.9m). The Georgian international has produced ten goals and nine assists during 21 league games this season.

FORWARDS

There can be no doubt that Real Madrid are worthy of investment. Liverpool have conceded more big chances than most other Premier League teams this season. So there has to be an inclusion for Frenchman Karim Benzema (€10.6m) due to his seven goals and four assists from ten matches.

Let’s add more Napoli via Victor Osimhen (€7.8m) – one of the most wanted strikers in the world right now. The Nigerian has picked up a whopping 19 goals and three assists during 21 Serie A outings.

Finally, it would take a very brave manager to exclude Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (€11.0m) from their teams this week. The English champions go into a must-win match with a striker who has already bagged a monstrous 27 goals in this season’s Premier League.

Kobel was hurt during pre-game warm-up on Friday and did not start for Dortmund. Meyer did a decent job replacing him. So, I would not recommend Kobel

    Worth a WC?

    Kepa*, Ward
    Shaw*, Trippier, White*, Bueno*, Akanji*
    Rashford, Saka, Gakpo*, Andreas*, Mahrez*
    Haaland, Kane, Nketiah*

Would change the *, however only think Mahrez, Nketiah and Bueno are essential to move at the moment (and have 2FT). Feel a bit at sea at the moment and not sure on best chip strategy.

Thoughts on this wc27 plan with transfers from gw28-31

    Raya
    Tripper Botman Estupinan
    Mitoma March Saka Rashford
    Toney Kane Haaland
    (Kepa, Martinelli, Chilwell, White)
    3.2itb

    Bgw28: Haaland to Watkins (10 players) 7.7itb
    Dgw29: Martinelli to Maddison (12 doublers - BB) 5.8itb
    Gw30: Toney to Haaland (1.2itb)
    Gw31: Mitoma to Martinelli (0.2itb)

Good morning all!! How do we think Liverpool approach the Bournemouth game with Madrid a few days later, have Salah and TAA, anyone think TAA may be rested for that game??? Early fixture and team leaks will be handy!! Just weighing up where to do Ake to Mee and bench TAA this week

    Thoughts welcomed!!

    Cheers everyone!!

Oh no, just realised its the early game... Guess we should wait on leaks, seem to get them most of the time for Pool. I don't feel confident guessing rotation tbh but TAA benching would probably tip me into selling for Mee.

Hello mate!! Yeah it is. Actually it’s really handy that it is, for this exact reason!! Will be keeping both Salah and TAA anyway, just have no Brentford defence cover for this game week and 28, so won’t mind if TAA is benched aslong as we get info before deadline as il bench him and do Ake to Mee

Yeah, you're right, it is handy really. I just prefer not to make my decisions & transfers so close to deadline but that'd be a big swing from 0 fixtures to 3.

I think the focus has to be top 4 now. Doubt Klopp makes sacrifices to think about a tie which is pretty much already over. Salah is pretty much rotation proof anyway and TAA hasn't played as much football this season as usual.

      LFC fan here

I believe he'll play the strongest possible team in this and in Madrid. Fulham getting through in the cup is v handy for LFC in that regard.

Only thing that might happen is early subs if they try and attack early to get a lead (similar to what City did there would be the plan). However .... we're quite appalling away from home this season generally. And I never like us in early kick offs - we've had some dire showings in recent years.

Long story short - I don't think the RM game impacts the selection for this initially so would play Trent if I had him.

        that's sensible.

They'll go for it in the league and will give it a shot in Madrid. Nothing to lose in that sense but they've got to try in that competition too.

Yeah, will be interesting to see how RM approach it as well. They have Barcelona the Sunday after so could be some minute-management etc ... whereas LFC can leave everything on the field with no game after for ages.

Ultimately I do not think it's gonna matter - the scale of comeback needed is too big and RM are not idiots. Also Klopp doesn't seem to be able to beat Ancelotti in any circumstance so there's that!

On a WC and ideally need to leave out one of the below big hitters:

    A) Salah

    C) Kane

I am thinking of going with Kane-Toney-Watkins for the next few weeks but am apprehensive to leave out Haaland vs Palace who are completely out of sorts.

    A) WC - set up similar to how lots of others are (but lose Salah, Shaw etc)

    B) Use 2FT to get Toney & Mitoma / another Brighton mid and look to WC in GW28 ahead of GW29 BB

Yeah 2FT looks alright this week. Personally clinging to the hope that Kane reverses some of the 'damage' of WC26 against NFO but even if he did haul, it's likely Salah matches vs bou.

89 points, with White, B.Silva coming off the bench and scoring, holding TAA, Salah and Darwin. Even Andreas came off my Bench for 8 points.

    Salah, B.Silva, Odegaard, Rash, Andreas
    Nketiah, Haaland, Darwin

Finally a gw with 3+ captaincy options is coming:
-Toney: will be the most popular captain here but it’s worth mentioning that he has 1 open play goal in last 5
-Bha mid: Mitoma will be the most popular, you expect Brighton to score goals but you don’t know who will be involved
-Rashford/Kane/Haaland: All can get double digits easily and outscore the doublers (it’s worth considering someone like Rashford imo)

    1. Shatner's Bassoon
      • 7 Years

Agree on 3 captain options but only Rashford out of the SGWers IMO. Kane's fixture looks brilliant but he's a "low floor" cpt choice when there are other options with the double.

Haaland always a safe ish bet for returns but given Rashford has SOU I don't think you can go there.

    I think Bueno and Nketiah are forcing me into a free hit BGW28. So that affects my moves this week. Current team;

    Leno
    Trippier Saliba Shaw
    Salah KdB Rashford Martinelli
    Haaland Nketiah Mitrovic

    Ward Andreas Tarkowski Bueno

Plan is KdB and Nketiah > Mitoma(vc) and Toney(c). This means a FH as I now only have 6 players instead of 8 with no Bueno and using a move on Eddie.

Or should I do Mitro>Toney, KdB>Zaha/JWP who play in BGW28 and roll with 8 to include Nketiah and save FH?

So it's essentially have Mitoma and Mitrovic in DGW27 and use FH in BGW28, or go without Mitoma and get Zaha/JWP and keep Nketiah bringing Toney in for Mitrovic and save FH playing 8 in BGW28?

I fancy some fun playing FH. A Kane and Son team could do well vs Soton for example. And not getting a Brighton mid could be bad news.

    1. Shatner's Bassoon
      • 7 Years

This does look like it needs to be either FH 28 or WC 28 to be honest, and you should get a good points boost from either.

Mitoma/Toney this week look easy moves. I would even then be tempted by Andreas to Saka so you can bench Mitro.

I think I'm going Mitoma & Toney in, Eddie needs to go and this is the chance. Then FH next week to this team. Expected points of 58 compared to 26 in RMT if I did nothing which looks like a decent use of the chip to me. Happy with all my players really and still got the WC for later.

        FH draft

        Reya
        Trippier Saliba Chilwell
        Son Saka Martinelli Maddison
        Kane Toney Watkins

        5.5 Tark Mings

Yeah looks good. Would prob advise Zinch/Gabriel over Saliba but unlikely to be a mega swing.

Yeah decent. Always wary of swapping out a player on FH that you own in case he burns you! Had Saliba since GW2 at 4.5. See how the budget goes. Cheers.

Is it madness to go McAllister over Mitoma?

No, both fine. Should be a cigarette paper between their scores over the next few but knowing this season it'll end up being a 25pt swing.

I expect one of the three to hit double digits each week. It's the De Zerbi lottery!

Not at all. Mitoma more attack-minded than McAllister who has decent attacking threat but penalties and set pieces shade it for the Dublinish man!

MacAllister has played 20 games this season and blanked in 14 of those.

He only got 3 bonus in the last game due to the penalty that Mitoma won.

In the 11 full games (60+ mins) that Mitoma has played, he's only blanked 3 times.

Food for thought there. Haven't looked at Brighton much. Probably gonna WC this week, was looking at a mid and Almighty. Must break out Transfermarkt later after CL window closes tonight.

These are just some basic stats I found from the FPL site.

I don't have any more detailed stats. Perhaps Mac's points output will increase in the more advanced role he's playing in (as people have stated).

Will have double Utd, triple Brighton and Salah going into the blank. I'll have 2 FTs as I plan on rolling... really trying to figure out the transfers needed - one or two of which I'll reverse in 29. Going to have some difficult choices to make.

If TAA is benched this GW, should I?

    A) Start Trippier and do Gnonto to Mbuemo and start Mbuemo over Ødegaard

    B) Transfer TAA out to Pinnock/Henry and do Gnonto to Toney and start Toney over Ødegaard. -4

    Already have Mee.

    Maddison
    Odegaard
    Watkins

Currently thinking odegaard, I have saka so spreads the risk a little. Not much in it between the 3 of them though

Salah has more yellow cards for celebrating goals scored against united at anfield than united have scored at anfield since he arrived.

Absolutely horrendous WC but still the best idea to stick with the plan and roll the transfer this week?

    Raya
    Henry / Estupinan / Trippier
    Saka / odegaard / Rashford / Mitoma
    Toney (C) / Haaland / Kane

    Kepa / Zinchenko / Maddison / Castagne

Current WC team from last week, thinking of BB this week or best holding?

    Raya
    Mee Gabriel Estupinan
    Saka Macallister March Rashford
    Haaland Toney Kane

    Ward James* Trippier Martinelli

Thinking I could FT James out for Chilwell and BB but they are away at Leicester - surely luck has to change soon?

Or do I hold BB and FT this week and then its a decision about who to bench?
