Here, Burning Questions co-host and four-time top 10k finisher Pras highlights the upside of saving a free transfer for Gameweek 38.

The FFS Pro Pundits 30

What a boring topic for my last piece this season for Fantasy Football Scout. Haven’t we always said we need to attack Double Gameweeks, and that two games are better than one? I guess this is still true but I think we are at a stage where, given how the fixtures have landed and how the template is, I am going to try and make the case that having two free transfers in Gameweek 38 can have a higher potential gain than using one in Gameweek 37. Of course, the usual team-dependent caveats apply…

Gameweek 37 fixtures

Double Gameweek 37 is peculiar in the sense that there are four doubling teams but of them, most managers already own three Brighton players (and if you don’t, it’s perhaps too late anyway) and want none from a Chelsea side who are uninspiring under Frank Lampard and play the two Manchester clubs away. Of course, a punt could work out but not one where I’d particularly look for upside.

This brings us to Manchester City and Manchester United.

Manchester City

By the time Man City walk out on Sunday at the Etihad to play Chelsea, the title could already be theirs – that will happen if Arsenal fail to win away to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The Citizens will seal the title regardless should they, as expected, beat Chelsea. They will be very keen to lift the trophy in their final game at the Etihad anyway, so I’d back them to do so.

This then puts into question their line-up not only for the midweek game versus Brighton but also the Gameweek 38 clash versus Brentford. They do, after all, have two more cup finals subsequently.

Let’s look into their players a bit more:

Top 100k ownership of select Man City players (source: LiveFPL)

  • Haaland: 99.6%
  • Grealish: 39%
  • Ederson: 20%
  • Stones: 17%
  • Mahrez: 12%
  • Alvarez: 6.8%
  • De Bruyne: 5%
  • Gundogan: 0.2%

On the face of it, a City midfielder or Julien Alvarez (£6.0m) does carry a huge upside. However, when you factor in the stupendous but physically intense UEFA Champions League victory over Real Madrid, and possible league title victory on Sunday, working out who starts both the Brighton and Brentford games seems to be a lottery, even more so than usual.

Moreover, it’s the ‘single’ Gameweek 37 options that are in our current teams that are hard to overlook. Can one justify selling a Newcastle striker playing Leicester at home for Alvarez? And then there’s a Liverpool team needing to win every game to have hope of qualifying for the Champions League, who are at home to Villa – would I sell Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) to fund Kevin De Bruyne (£12.2m)? I don’t see a big upside there. Another reason for holding Salah is that in the event Haaland isn’t starting in Gameweek 38, Salah probably becomes the standout captaincy option.

At the back, all City defenders are low-owned – but we are talking low upside. There is no Cancelo-type high-upside defender anymore. Using a transfer to switch out Kieran Trippier (£6.1m), despite Newcastle’s defensive struggles, doesn’t seem worth it to me.

Manchester United

Easy to say save a free transfer when you already have all the key dgw37 protagonists.

Wilfried Zaha is injured by the way.

    Pras

I don't think may people would feel the need to use a transfer on that team - but what if you owned Grealish? I'm thinking selling for Mahrez, especially as I'm happy with my team for GW38, although I don't own Salah or Kane.

    1. Sharkytect
      • 11 Years

This is a good shout. I have 2FTs but would need to use both to get Bruno in for martinelli, whereas grealish to mahrez is a simple 1-transfer move and I could roll the other one

    2. Pras (FPL)

Hey WR - hope all is well? I guess it depends on who you are benching and how the overall team looking for 38 - I guess you have made the no-Salah call so its too late to shoe horn him in. I think Grealish starts 2 of the final 3 - 1 start would be pretty unlucky. Using that transfer vs a Brighton mid to Trossard or any other (team leaks dependant) is exactly the dilemma I was referring to. 38 team may look good now, but not so much if Man Utd have wrapped things up or there are unforeseen benchings.

Do we think Mahrez plays both the double after only getting a cameo tonight? Dalot + KDB > Shaw + Mahrez for free?

Have funds for Greenwood > Alvarez but that would provide be for -4 and create a benching headache to drop Stones, TAA, Mitoma or Isak

    Any advice greatly appreciated

Personally yes (although I have him so that might just be wishful thinking) but I think I'd rather bring in Gundo if I was making the move now.

I wouldn't go with your second plan -4 + benching headache = pain (trust me I did the same this week and benched estu)

Only if you have a City spot free and are prepared to take a punt. I’m not sure it’s worth the -4 personally given City’s position. 2nd game could a second string XI

Absolutely gutted that Boro were beaten tonight by Coventry. Great performance by Boro over both legs but the footballing gods were against them.
Congratulations to Coventry, they have a great chance of promotion particularly if they get the same referee in the final.

Had to look up what "Shade" means, apparently it is a subtle, sneering expression of contempt for or disgust with someone.
Nothing subtle or snearing about my comment on the referee's performance ...just a fact which you would appreciate if you watched the Boro match rather than Man City.

How many clear cut chances did they create at home to coventry? They just passed the ball sideways. Good Opportunity but Coventry were better. Would be funny if they beat Luton as well.

Luton deserve promotion tbf, Middlesbrough, Coventry , Sunderland don’t.

Is this a serious comment.!!! Coventry resorted to a dogged defensive formation against Boro in both legs and last night were aided by a referee who allowed them to constantly foul our forwards. Nearly every Coventry defender was booked....some should have walked. Coventry will be OK at Wembley if they have the same ref.

        1. PartyTime

It doesn’t matter how they get it done as long as they get it done! even with their anti tiki taka approach. Why criticize the ref? Like you said they received the most cards, it might have been frustrating to watch because you’re a Boro fan but if Boro did the same & won, I doubt if you would really care.

Boro weren’t creative enough tbh, they didn’t create much, just pass sideways & long range shots. One would expect them to do better than that at home. Easy to criticize the ref but Boro also messed up.

You clearly weren't at the match or saw last night's game in full. Can't remember any long range shots from Boro??? I can remember our forwards beating the defence and constanly being brought down. I remember our wingers cossing the ball into a packed Coventry defence.
Coventry got it done with the referees help and that does matter to 30,000 boro fans at the match.

Have exactly the same midfield and same issue although i have enough cash ITB to go straight to Bruno from mahrez. I guess the options for your are:

      A) Mahrez & Salah -> Bruno & KDB (-4)
      B) salah -> Bruno
      C) Mahrez & watkins -> Bruno & Alvarez (-4) + benching headache

Something like that? But not sure I like any of them. Might be better off just saving the transfer and risking no Bruno.

If you could, would you do a straight swap for Mahrez to Bruno?

On -4. Anything worth additional hit?

    A. Zinchenko => Akanji and play over Mee
    B. Something else

Best option here? Think KDB’s minutes are too much at risk for Salah -> KDB

    A) Save FT
    B) Wilson -> ALVAREZ (bench Isak)
    C) KEPA -> EDERSON
    D) Something else

    KEPA
    SHAW, ESTUPINAN, Trippier
    BRUNO, RASHFORD, MITOMA, MAC, Salah
    HAALAND, Isak

    Raya, Wilson, AKE, Mee
    Bank 0.5m, 1FT, no chips

      * ignore C) - can’t afford EDERSON!

Is Bruno essential? Can only get to him with the below moves.

    1. Mahrez > Bruno + Solanke > Greenwood (-4)

    Or just make this move?

    2. Zinc > Shaw

    Current Team

    Raya

    Estupinan / TAA / Shaw

    Odegaard / Mahrez / Salah / Mitoma / Rashford

    Haaland / Isak

    Kepa | Schar | Trippier | Solanke

    Thanks

Definitely just Zinc -> SHAW. Mahrez could easily haul this GW

Yeah, that is where I was heading.

Is Salah > Bruno worth it and bring Salah back for GW38?

        Thanks

Thinking about saving and than KDB > Eze & Grenwood > Kane for 38.
      Ths is me.
      DDG
      TAA Shaw Estupinan
      Salah KDB Mac Mitoma Rashford
      Haaland Isak

Which man utd double up would be best?
    A. Lindelof and bruno
    Or
    B. Shaw and Antony

Would be taking out trippier and Barnes for A, and if do B i would be taking out Mings and Barnes?

    Any help appreciated

I'd personally try to get Bruno over any other player and Lindelof is pretty nailed it seems

What would you do here? Feeling nervy about having no MUFC, chasing 20 points in ML and rival has Bruno and Rashy.

    Steele (Raya)
    Estupido, Trips, White (Botty, Guehi)
    Mahrez, Mitoma, Salah, Saka (Andreas)
    Haaaaland, Kane, Alvarez

Perhaps a boring Botman to Lindy and play ahead of Trippier/White? A move for Bruno would cost me -4 and probably mean losing Kane.

I understand where Pras is coming from, but there is an opportunity for chasers in both 37 and 38 to make up ground. Better take a hit now than in 38?

I can see myself doing a -4 in both weeks..

Nice article btw. Pras is arguably the best content creator out there for someone who wants FPL advice/guidance. His clarity of thinking and ability to explain is second to none! Like a great school teacher lol
