With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2023/24, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded £500 each.

One manager will even win £10k via a random draw in Gameweek 1.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher on the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

SIGN UP TO SKY FANTASY FOOTBALL FOR 2023/24 HERE

HOW DO I PLAY SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world.

However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

Any of these formations are valid:

  • 4-3-3 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 3 x MID, 3 x STR)
  • 4-4-2 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 4 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 4-5-1 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 5 x MID, 1 x STR)
  • 3-5-2 (1 x GK, 3 x DEF, 5 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 5-3-2 (1 x GK, 5 x DEF, 3 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 3-4-3 (1 x GK, 3 x DEF, 4 x MID, 3 x STR)

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Gameweeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Gameweek as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 50 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Gameweek – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

An ‘Overhaul’ (the equivalent of Wildcard) is also available in Sky Sports. Previously Sky managers were allowed two of these a season but this has been whittled down to one.

The Overhaul period will begin at the end of Gameweek 21 and resume when the first match is played in Gameweek 23.

You will be able to make unlimited transfers during this period until the first game day deadline.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Gameweek so long as the players in question are in action on different days.

For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Gameweek, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline.

Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Gameweek, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

Head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the ‘Leagues’ tab and clicking ‘Join+’.

I think people are a bit mad not to go with 2 Premiums purely on a price point basis.
Having the budget spread around will cause big headaches come GW 2 or 3 when another premium or Salah/Kane are firing.

Personally I would rather play the longer game than play for a particular gw but depends where kane ends up and whether you can get away with TAA and Diaz to cover salah which I think you can

Tbf if you're using Trent and Diaz to cover Salah's points then you're 1 player down by definition.

Well if you assume the premiums will be firing, of course you will want them in your team. Knee-jerking Kane to Salah will still take 2 transfers, just as doing Rashford & Son to 5.5 & Salah would be 2FTs.

I think there's plenty of benefit in going for the team you think will get the most points, then deal with it later. I can write my own "what if" scenarios to fit my own agenda. Taking a route with more premiums might get you fewer points even if they ARE firing. If they're not, you're wasting a lot of money.

Agree largely with the sentiment. However I always try to get as much money in the 11 and in key positions as possible first GWs.
        My draft is:

        Pickford
        Estu / Gabriel / Botman
        Maddison / Salah / Saka / Rashford / Mitoma
        Haaland (c) / Wissa

        B: 4m GK, Pinnock/Henry, Bell, Archer.

Feel free to shoot holes in it ha

Then I would hope Maddison is involved! haha
I'm not a knee jerk so I'd wait at least 2 weeks. If Salah isn't and Kane is.
2 FT Salah & Wissa out & Kane & Mac10 in etc etc

Could be but I’m keeping an eye on Diaz personally as he forced salah out wide a bit more before his injury. I think the points are going to be a bit more spread with Diaz, jota, Darwin, gakpo and the two new signings. It’ll be very interesting indeed

Gakpo/Diaz will be most at risk for minutes with Jota/Darwin.
Salah I think will be pushed forward as a pair up top with Szobo & Trent behind him (Szobo out wide, Trent coming inside with Mac10 in centre)

How do you choose your three defenders?
By their chances of getting clean sheets or their chances of making an offensive contribution?

Gabriel, Stones, Shaw vs TAA, James, Estupinan

    1. WVA
      • 9 Years

Combination of the two for me and by avoiding injury prone troll's

    2. Eyes of Blue
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

Both! Ideally I’d want defenders that play high up the pitch and get involved in the attacks increasing their potential for attacking returns, but also ones that play for teams that are capable of keeping clean sheets.

Once I’ve figured out who those defenders are, I pick the ones with the best fixtures. My current 3 are TAA, Shaw & Estupinan.

    Haaland Jesus

Think he will continue to do well re bonus & potential assists, yet so many 5 and 5.5 options and 1M extra will go far ...

I'm feeling similar. I'm going to wait till pre season to see how Toon look.
I'd be concerned with Champions League rotation & if Toon do buy Chalobah or depth for that spot to keep Trips fresh.

Yeah I agree with all these comments, the below looks much stronger.

        Ramsdale
        TAA Shaw Estupinan
        Rashford Saka Maddison Mbeumo Mitoma
        Haaland Jesus
        Areola Baldock Bell Woodrow

        1. Olof Mellberg
          • 3 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

          This looks solid tbh.
          My only queries would be:
          - Jesus minutes with Havertz/Tross/Marti, could he be the 60 minute man they rotate/keep from injuries.
          - Not necessarily going for clean sheets but attacking returns with Def as they're set and forget back 3.
          - No Salah haha

          1. WVA
            • 9 Years

Yeah definitely less minutes all round at Arsenal due to improved squad/players back from injuries but two Arsenal attacker's is essential to start with based on previous season and fixtures. Team is just that much stronger with TAA over Salah.

451 always causes issues, Jesus Gakpo Nkunku Mitrovic are good options in that price range

With United and Spurs not following up on Raya interest presumably may stay at Brentford- but awkward for Flekken who no doubt fully expected first team football

I can’t see it, I think relationship between them is far from repairable now. Brentford haven’t messed around and got another keeper in. With strakosha and balcombe backing Flekken i feel Raya has to go sooner rather than later

Is there a website that contains historical FPL data regarding the number of points earned by a specific player in specific matches of the season in chronological order? For example, season 2022/2023 - player: Salah, points: GW 1 (team A) - 6 points, GW 2 (team B) - 4 points, etc.

I'm still not 100% sold on Mitoma.
He's incredible to watch, but especially the end of the season he looked like he'd been figured out or was fatigued. They're going to be playing Europa on top of last season.

I'm very tempted by Enciso instead as De Zerbi says he can play him anywhere in front 3 positions. That 1m extra is huge elsewhere.

I think he'll be fine. He still had and created a lot of chances in that late period where he had very few returns, I think he was just burned out and didn't have much luck either. Brighton will be looking further to him to step up next season with MacAllister gone and Caicedo likely gone soon and I think the break will do him well. Don't forget he's still very young and went from getting 5-10 mins at most in the first 10-15GWs to starting and playing 70-90 mins essentially every game so it was a big jump in demand

RE Enciso: He was on my watchlist for this season before last season ended and still is. I just need to see if he's playing that 10 role mainly in preseason. But even if he is, João Pedro can play there and they have many options at CF too. Any option I'll go with will likely be short term in mind given EL fixtures

Good afternoon all!! In isolation which is the best option here??? If you were going down the Haaland and One of Salah or Kane route

    A- Salah and 6.5 forward
    Or
    B- Kane and 6.5 midfielder

    Cheers everyone!!

      A. I think Lpool are going to dominate with Mac10/Szobo in and the main player to benefit will be Mo.

          Wissa 100%.

A lot of people overlooking him.
If Brentford don't sign a striker he's almost certainly going to be in my 2 Premium squad.

          Some comparisons:
Wissa played 1500 mins with 111 points
Jesus played 2064 mins with 125 points
Mitrovic played 2010 mins with 107 points
Isak played 1500 mins with 100 points

Based on last season, B will score a lot more points and there are a lot more good 6.5 midfield options

    Hi Lads.

After 24Hours of tinkering, and some what now appears to be template, im thinking out loud here basically and for anyone who is interested ... here's my team, what are your thoughts? Is my process all wrong...? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    1) 4.5 Goalie/4,0 Fodder - Will either be Brightons or Brentfords, Pickford in at the moment just until I know whose first choice at Brighton, or potentially if Raya leaves Brentford.

    2) No Salah. Tried and failed to have Haaland, Salah and TAA.

    3) 1m Left in bank to do Estupinan to James or Chilwell in Gameweek 3 all being well.

    4) All my money put into a strong starting 12.. I like a first sub being decent for flexibility.

    Pickford / 4.0
    TAA / Shaw / Gabriel / Estupinan / 4.0
    BrunoF / Saka / Maddison / Mbuemo / Enciso
    Haaland / Jesus / 4.5

Cheers and happy pre-season to you all!

      Some quick notes:
      - Avoid booking in transfers in a Gameweek 1 squad, it never happens the way you intend.
      - Bruno could be playing deep with Mount in and Rashford is probably going to lead the line.
      - Jesus could be a 60 minute man.

Currently looking at a 4-5-1 with this:

    Pickford,
    TAA, L.Martinez, Gabriel, Estupiñan,
Saka, Eze, Odegaard, Bruno F:, Rashford (VC),
    Haaland (C)

    Bench: Leno, Beyer, Semenyo, McAtee.

It feels plain as can be but I’m really struggling to find a variation on that set up that I would want to change to - unless the pre season games throw up any thing big.

Would that be solid enough to walk into the start of the season?

I like it, but I'm favoring a 3-5-2 setup to start. I'd rather have a proven producer at forward as opposed to def. that said that a loaded mf. but to me its about price points and flexibility

      1. ClothedinSun
        • 7 Years

That's good logic. I found Jesus a frustrating figure in my team last season but I do agree that outside of Haaland and Kane, he is the forward you'd want. The setup on my team with the midfield is to give some flexibility if city/chelsea/LP or other assets (there are so many this year with the pricing) start to bang and I want to move away from the double ups - same with my defence too.

I'm leaning towards something similar, but the bench with two 4.5 fodders kinda scared me.

Same! It'll be about spotting the cheap gems early and getting them in. I do think Semenyo will play more and become a dependable bench option given his fee and quality. The other spot is going to be tricky but if Eze starts to falter, a move to Enciso and an upgrade on McAtee to say Joao Pedro/ Ndiaye... even Adebayo for that extra security isn't a million miles away! Best of luck anyway chief.

dont mind the lack of cover honestly. brentford matchups first three gameweeks are great, so the henry /pinnock combo seems like enough. plus the trent and jesus price points allow nice flexibility for transfers if needed

It's very good but I don't like the stress of Enciso.

Watkins set and forget okay but that 8/7.5 midfield spot could be gold.

      Why Stones over Shaw?

Good team. Out of interest, how come you went with Balogun? I’d be surprised if he played much as apparently he wants to leave. If he’s just fodder then might be wise not to waste an Arsenal spot on him.

Talk of Balogun moving to Palace or Chelsea (or Italian clubs). If he ends up a starter at Palace or a similar club pretty much everyone will have him in their teams.

I think Arsenal want to loan him. If so, the likes of Palace come into it but it's only rumours for now. Would be great to have a 4.5m starting fwd though.

    Haaland-Jesus-Archer
    Thoughts?

    Pickford (Areola)
    Gabriel Estupinan Shaw Stones (Colwill*)
    Salah Saka Foden Eze Mitoma
    Haaland (Wissa, 4.5)

For gw1 probably. Not 100% confident Brentford will do well this season but would probably play Wissa over Estupinan or Eze when Brentford have better fixtures than Brighton/Palace
