With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2023/24, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded £500 each.

One manager will even win £10k via a random draw in Gameweek 1.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher on the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

SIGN UP TO SKY FANTASY FOOTBALL FOR 2023/24 HERE

HOW DO I PLAY SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world.

However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

Any of these formations are valid:

  • 4-3-3 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 3 x MID, 3 x STR)
  • 4-4-2 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 4 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 4-5-1 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 5 x MID, 1 x STR)
  • 3-5-2 (1 x GK, 3 x DEF, 5 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 5-3-2 (1 x GK, 5 x DEF, 3 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 3-4-3 (1 x GK, 3 x DEF, 4 x MID, 3 x STR)

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Gameweeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Gameweek as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 50 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Gameweek – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

An ‘Overhaul’ (the equivalent of Wildcard) is also available in Sky Sports. Previously Sky managers were allowed two of these a season but this has been whittled down to one.

The Overhaul period will begin at the end of Gameweek 21 and resume when the first match is played in Gameweek 23.

You will be able to make unlimited transfers during this period until the first game day deadline.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Gameweek so long as the players in question are in action on different days.

For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Gameweek, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline.

Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Gameweek, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

Head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the ‘Leagues’ tab and clicking ‘Join+’.

I have a feeling that Arteta will copy Pep's 3box3 formation, like Klopp did at the end of the season.
This would mean Zinchenko moving into centre mid for a similar role to what TAA excelled at.

    Martinelli ..... Jesus ............ Saka
    ......... Havertz .. Odegaard
    .......... Zinchenko .. Rice
    .....Saliba .. Gabriel .. White
    .................. Ramsdale

If this is the case then I'd expect Zinchenko to register a high number of attack returns.

It's entirely possible. Zinchenko may be an underrated option at the start, and I haven't seen him on many teams. I also think that Odegaard and Havertz could get plenty of assists in this system.

As with Man City, they'll play a different shape in each phase of play. Formations aren't as rigid as everyone makes out.

But 3-box-3 seems to be the go to shape in the attacking phase these days. Got good protection from counter attacks, strong control in the central midfield, and enough minimum width. Also, the two attacking midfielders can push to overload back 4s with 5 attacking players, with 5 left deep to recycle the ball and defend counters.

He's good on the ball so could potentially move into midfield when they have the ball either.

Can’t see Timber coming to sit on bench at Arsenal so will be competing with White. White I guess may compete with Gabriel/Saliba so probably need to see how they set up preseason- and if Tierney stays and keeps fit adds more competition into equation- think I will go Ramsdale and 2 attackers to start season!

To complicate things further Timber can also play RCB. Gabriel doesn't seem to have too much competition for LCB so I'm on him at the moment. I'm not too keen on spending 5m on Ramsdale.

    Bottomed last page:

    Thoughts on this draft?

    Pickford (Areola)
    Gabriel Estupinan Shaw Stones (Colwill*)
    Salah Saka Foden Eze Mitoma
    Haaland (Wissa, 4.5)

*Colwill could be whichever Chelsea 4.5 defender likely to start.....or he could be James/Chilwell and Wissa would be another 4.5 striker

    1. Arteta
      • 10 Years

Strong and safe team. You can't own everyone you'd like, but Foden to Madison/Mount would give you attackers from seven different teams, which can be positive. I wouldn't downgrade Wissa to another fodder. He's one of the best cheap forwards in the game.

    Haaland, Jesus, (Wissa)

Having a £6.0m player on the bench seems crazy to me. It's not like you are going to rotate him either because that would mean benching even more expensive players. Might as well make him a £4.5 bench fodder and use the extra £1.5m to make improvements.

First crack at it. Don’t like the restrictions of 451 though at all. Wouldn’t consider it normally but the value in Def/mid looks great.

    Pickford
    Shaw, Estupinan, Ake, Zinchenko
    Salah, Rashford, Saka, Foden, Mitoma
    Haaland

    Areola, Bell, McAtee, Simms

I'm also thinking 451 may be the way to go this season as the £5.0m defenders look likely to outscore the £6.0m forwards.

The non playing bench is where it makes it unviable though. If we get a 4.5 playing forward then maybe. The 5m Wolves forward might come good.

Yeah you need 100% nailed players as only likely to have one playing sub on your bench. I think a £4.5m forward will likely emerge, someone like Semeydo could get 1500 minutes.

TAA should be good for 180-200 points

I just think the £5.0m defenders offer superior value and much easier to rotate to dodge hard away fixtures.
Are you going to bench Shaw for the awful away fixtures GWs 2 + 4?

    4. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years

All good picks. The XI should score a lot of points.

But for me having two 4.5m strikers leaves you too vulnerable. I think you'll get caught with playing 10 players now and again. Also when you get small knocks, you won't have anyone to fill in for one or two weeks, meaning you'll be forced into unnecessary transfers.

    5. Deulofail
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

If you're gonna go for this, I would find 0.5 to upgrade Bell, either by downgrading Odegaard to Martinelli, or perhaps a defender so you can start a rotation.

I think 2x 4.5 forwards is fine and you can WC if things get messy, but at least a 4.5 defender will help it tick along and let you make the WC decision more in your own time.

If you like it, don't let people push you into the template "formation". Make it work for you

Trying to come up with something outside(ish) of template

Seeing a lot of value in defenders with regular returns so this draft is very much a rotating defender style draft if that makes sense (in short....I just can't ignore Porro and Moreno as differentials as they just don't seem to be in many teams)

Let me know what you think.....

    Pickford
    TAA, Gabriel, Estupinian, Porro
    Rashford, Saka, Foden, Mbeumo
    Haaland(c) Nkunku

    Areola, Moreno, Ensico, Archer

Hoping the strong bench requires less transfers/Hits

Ok maybe the idea behind what I'm doing isn't template but looking at the players it is.....I do think that having Moreno and Ensico on the bench rather than starting gives it an edge and flexibility that template doesn't

Most I'm seeing is Botman as first sub....I want something more explosive on my bench should I need it

Arsenal, Man Utd, Brighton, Newcastle and Brentford, offers great rotation. However does possibly require Man Utd and Brighton to Spurs and Chelsea from GW3.

By then we should be able to tell who the RB will be at Spurs, as it not necessarily 100% going to be Poro, given Ange's tendencies to invert his fullbacks. But also enough time to see if James and Chilwell are as attacking as we all hope, but also if a solid 4.5 CB from Chelsea becomes clear.

    2 questions if I may:-

Firstly is Mbeumo a bit of a trap? Wissa will surely play the No 9 role if they don't buy.

Secondly my current draft has a bench of 4.0m keeper, 2 x 4.0m defenders and a 4.5 forward - perviously I've always had a fairly strong full squad - that always causes me issues and unneccessary points on my bench. Is going with the above too extreme?

    1. LangerznMash
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

It completely depends on whether two 'nailed' £4.0m defenders come to light, or if there is £4.5 forward that gets some minutes.

I think people are perhaps kicking the hype into overdrive, without stopping to think, that he is a winger and perhaps his assists might actually reduce without Toney being there.

It's a risky strategy not one I'd be comfortable with tbh. But if your picks are solid starters, you could get away with it until European fixtures start.

Agreed but according to stats from last season Mbuemo performed really well without toney something like 6 attacking returns in 10 games when he played without toney (I can't remember the exact figures)

Think it’s worth getting a 4.5 defender in there as 12th man that can rotate a bit as there are so many good ones

Mbeumo is still a good attacking threat but yeah unlikely to be playing as a striker.
Think they have Shade & Wissa for that.

I wouldn't say "trap" exactly; I think he's a decent option, especially with Brentford's opening fixtures, and gaining pens while Toney is out. But I'm maybe a little surprised that he's in quite so many teams & I'm not quite sure if he's going to substantially step up his rate of returns from last season though. Wissa I really like.

I will probably go with a 4.5 on the bench, maybe Cash in rotation with another 4.5 but I haven't quite figured out my defensive plan yet. Although I am considering just committing to an early WC (5/6) in which case I might chance it with 2x 4m defenders, especially if that Sheff Utd WB (Baldock?) seems nailed as GWs 1 & 4 look ok to play him

Thanks mate - I'm currently on Wissa without Mbeumo but pretty much every team I see on here and all the "pro's" seem to have him.

As I replied to Fish above I could change Shaw to Ake and then have a 4.5m defender - probably safest to do this

Thanks (as always) to your reply

4-5-1 seems a good idea thos season as highlighted in other posts - I think having 5 defenders priced between 5.0 and 8.0 offer better value than the forwards priced between 6.0 and 8.0 that we are seeing in 3-5-2 drafts where people are having 4.0 defenders from newly promoted teams as their first choice on the bench in some cases.

However the difficulty for me is that with a 4-5-1 with two fodder forwards it is difficult to quickly adapt with a FT or small hit if the likes of Nkunku, Ferguson, Jesus etc hit a purple patch.

The only conceivable approach would be to downgrade Trent to a 4.5 / 5.0m defender, freeing up 3.0m+ to upgrade a forward fodder.

But then what if trent is in incredible form? Could I stomach downgrading him? And where else would I find the money to upgrade a 4.5 to a 7.5/8.0 forward?

    Current draft is 4-5-1:

    Pickford
    Trent / Stones / Shaw / Gabriel
    Rashford / Saka / Foden / Mitoma / Mbuemo
    Haaland

    Verbruggen / James / 4.5 / 4.5

I like your team. Especially the James pick.

To me it all depends when you may wildcard - I always do this early (about game week 4) - you are really restricted with this structure but could get away with it for a few weeks.

Have you considered Wissa instead of Mbeumo (see post above)? This could give you a better longer term structure - just my current thoughts with a couple of defensive downgrades

FPL got the pricing right this year to break the template I reckon. For example, can have the following squad with only Haaland and Areola owned by more than 20% of players (atm).

    4.5 Areola
    Gabriel Shar James Cash Beyer
    Odegaard Martinelli Foden Bowen Eze
    Haaland Watkins Wilson

Plenty of other options to consider as well eg Jota Diaz Gakpo at Liverpool, Son Maddison Kane, Man City defenders, Chelsea & Brighton players, etc

I meant broadly speaking. There's tons of options.

And you could downgrade Watkins or Wilson to 4.5m and upgrade Cash to TAA in the above squad (for example).

First time playing Sky FF and am a bit confused by:
"The Overhaul period will begin at the end of Gameweek 21 and resume when the first match is played in Gameweek 23."

Does this mean that gw22 is an absolute free for all where I can pick the best 11-man team I can afford that plays early and then replace anybody who doesn't deliver (once)? Basically a rolling free hit, and then I make another set of transfers to make sure my team is ok for gw23 onward?

It's way too soon for this question. Everything is in Pochettino's hands, and it depends on his plans with Colwill. I'm sure he wants some guarantees over first-team football before he stays and signs a new contract; otherwise, he can easily sign for Brighton or Liverpool. If he leaves, I'm expecting Silva and Fofana to start and Badiashile and Chalobah to play in other competitions.

One tactic I've used to good effect over the seasons is
When selecting my squad I pick the forwards & mids first
Then I select my defence avoiding teams that play against my mids or forwards
It's not as difficult as you might think
Most of us will probably play wildcard by game week 3 or 4
    Here's my squad
    Pickford (Areola)
    Gabriel Trent Estupian James (Bell)
    Saka Mitoma Odegaard Mbeumo Rashford
    Haaland(DCL & McAtee)
The only attack v defence conflict in game weeks 1-4 is
Rashford v Gabriel in game week 4

Anyone else thinking of going with 1 striker?
Jesus- always injured, havertz, other options ( ramsdale, saka, marti, zinchenko, gabriel, ode)
    Dcl - injury
Watkins- lets see how they roll
Kane - too pricey if you have salah, uncertainty
    Wilson/isak/ mitro - bad fixtures

There are too many good mids right now. And Chelsea defenders are cheap under pochettino.

Makes me wonder " how about 4-5-1"?

Do you think losing Mac Allister, and possibly Caicedo too, will have a significant impact on Brighton next season? Arguably their two best players and the heartbeat of the team. Irreplaceable.

We've seen the impact losing one star player can have when VVD was injured for Liverpool, or when Casemiro was banned, or when Saliba was injured. One key player can have a huge influence.

Mac - not massively, seems to me like Enciso is ready to take over & they have plenty more emerging talent in attack.

Caicedo is much more concerning, if only because I don't see anyone else in their squad who has the same qualities. Gilmour Groß in the pivot would be very different
