With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2023/24, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded £500 each.

One manager will even win £10k via a random draw in Gameweek 1.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher on the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

SIGN UP TO SKY FANTASY FOOTBALL FOR 2023/24 HERE

HOW DO I PLAY SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world.

However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

Any of these formations are valid:

  • 4-3-3 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 3 x MID, 3 x STR)
  • 4-4-2 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 4 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 4-5-1 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 5 x MID, 1 x STR)
  • 3-5-2 (1 x GK, 3 x DEF, 5 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 5-3-2 (1 x GK, 5 x DEF, 3 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 3-4-3 (1 x GK, 3 x DEF, 4 x MID, 3 x STR)

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Gameweeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Gameweek as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 50 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Gameweek – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

An ‘Overhaul’ (the equivalent of Wildcard) is also available in Sky Sports. Previously Sky managers were allowed two of these a season but this has been whittled down to one.

The Overhaul period will begin at the end of Gameweek 21 and resume when the first match is played in Gameweek 23.

You will be able to make unlimited transfers during this period until the first game day deadline.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Gameweek so long as the players in question are in action on different days.

For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Gameweek, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline.

Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Gameweek, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

Head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the ‘Leagues’ tab and clicking ‘Join+’.

Thoughts on Nkunku? I’ve been having a little look at the vids and he does look very good. Only thing that puts me off is him never having played in the Prem. When was the last time a striker came from the Bundesliga and hit the ground running? Never!
    Ok maybe once 😆

No need to get him from the start, but I'd recommend to get someone from that same price point, so you can hop on Nkunku if needed.

Seems like he'll be an early bandwagon. Remember Werner starting his first season around 40% ownership? I have no problem taking a punt on one, maybe two players new to the league for GW1 but there are other options I'd feel much safer with. Too much upheaval at Chelsea for me to be interested until we get a proper look at them

Evening all, first time back on all summer.

Current dilemma is between these 2 options…

    A. Shaw Salah DCL/6m striker
    B. TAA Odegaard Gakpo/7.5m striker

    1. Birds of Prey
      • 12 Years

      B
If TAA doesn't immediately return, it's always easier to downgrade.

B with Saka instead of Ode and Jesus instead of Gakpo. If you have 0.5m spare.

I like the second graph's point. Probably learn more about Brighton than anyone else early on, not counting gw1.

A lot of potential in that 7.5m-8.0m bracket. He's my pick atm.

I'm going Ramsdale, Saka and Jesus. Not much in it though.

I noticed he wasn’t in a lot of the teams being posted here recently. People are going towards a 4-5-1

      3. Deulofail
        • 9 Years

It's theoretically possible for everyone to prefer Saka, Martinelli, Odegaard and every other midfielder in the game to Jesus but still prefer to have a team with Jesus in it. He's at the top of a pile that many don't want to pick from, as evidenced by the popularity of the fodder forward(s).

    4. diesel001

He's the second highest owned striker so far and in the Top 10 most owned players. He isn't being underestimated.

    5. Deulofail
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

And ended with a flurry too. I do think he's underestimated as an FPL asset. It's true he's not clinical, but he gets a lot of chances and I'd expect him to score a bit more than any other Arsenal player when on the pitch

I see Arsenal as a bit like Liverpool and Man City (excluding Haaland and Salah) - the goals will be spread around so much and incredibly hard to get on the right player at the right time

I actually have seen him way more than I expected. For me on the whole he's a player with high xGI and good stats in general but doesn't back it up enough with returns

He isn't really a number 9. Like Firmino, but worse IMO. Decent player though but not a top 4 striker.

The problem going without TAA is...

End of GW1 looking ahead to GW2, likely cs , attacking return (s), double figure haul for a highly owned asset

    1. Amartey Partey
      • 6 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

Sure he will score points but if you spend the extra 3 million on him than say going for a Zinchenko or Porro is you weaken your midfield big time.

Benefits of no Salah outweigh the FOMO, for me.

I'm looking at having him for now but I certainly don't count GW2 as a nailed on clean sheet. Bournemouth ended the season quite well from an attacking POV and that will only get better under Iraola

When you're talking about a team or player going from their own half into the opposition's half, do you regard it as going up or down the pitch?

    1. DARE TO BISCAN
      • 7 Years

I would say up. As in 'up front', 'knock it up the pitch', 'deep lying playmaker'.

Either's fine, though. You could say 'play it downfield'. As long as there's context, it would be difficult to be confused.

We are a tiny minority- the addicted, who they don't fear losing. They are pandering towards the crowds who want to pick players they know and not look at stats to find good differentials. Sure the youtube content creators do differential videos for that anyway.

Good question, only Verbugger and Fofana, then Grealish at 8.4% is next nearest. But that goalie will change with the news.

I know I’m getting way ahead of myself with the planned moves, but to keep the game enjoyable for me I think I’m going to play aggressively this year.

Last season got very dull with it being very template. I also spent far too much of the season ‘hedging my bets’ with ‘safe setups’ never going all in on an attack or a defence to try and shake things up in favour of ‘spreading risk’ (example instead of Wilson and Isak in the DGW I just had Isak…).

I think it’s important to remember FPL is a game and it’s supposed to be fun, instead of ‘outlandish’ picks to go against the grain I think a change of style might be in order to keep me engaged…

    Anyway, here goes:

    Verbruggen
    Trent, Shaw, Martinez
    Rash, Saka, Martinelli, Mitoma, Mbeumo
    Haaland (C), Jesus

    Areola, Bell, Beyer, Archer
    0.0m itb

    GW1 > 2: Save

    GW2 > 3: Jesus > Nkunku

    GW3 > 4: Shaw > James
    Martinez > Chilwell

Treble Arse attack to start the season seeing as Arsenal generally struggle to keep cleansheets at home before shifting to treble Chelsea after having a period to assess them…

You have 8 of my starting 11 and my team is very template. But don't worry about that, they are the best picks.

I think the “best” picks are always going to be popular now.

I think playing style and overall combination of players is what makes the difference now.

Styles make fights as they say 😉

Playing aggressively is fine but likelihood is that your team and planned moves will all change within the next week or two as preseason begins, nevermind as late as when we get towards the end of it and the beginning of the league season. Getting yourself attached to such a specific plan now is likely to only give you a headache

I do agree, I’m thinking of the players as just ‘placeholders’ at the moment for what I want to do.

Will take things like form etc into consideration nearer the time.

But I don’t think it’s a bad thing to want to start with a more aggressive mindset to begin with, something to set me apart a little bit from the crowd.

It was encouraging hearing the winner of FPL last season talk about “playing your own game”. Personally I’m going to be paying less attention to “the template” and EO this year and just target the players that I think are the best options.

    Pick (4.0)
    Saliva, Trent, Botman (Pinn, Baldock)
    Salah, Marti, Mbuemo, Eze, Enciso
    Jesus, Halland. (4.5)

Prefer to just stick with Shaw initially, but yes I'd definitely see myself doubling up when ManUtd have a favourable fixture run. I expect he'll be good for bps

    Pickford/Leno

    Haaland/nkunku/gakpo

    Thanks all!!

It's well balanced. I'd be tempted to downgrade a GK. To upgrade Bruno, Madd, or a fwd

I'd wait and see what formation Poch plays before picking Nkunku. He's listed as a striker in FPL but has played most of his games as a midfielder, which may mean he will play most of his games on the wing or behind the striker (like Schurrle used to do). Keep an eye on him for a few weeks and if he smashes it, then bring him in. In the meantime I'd look at bringing in Jesus if you can find the extra 0.5m.

was happy with my Sky team until i looked at captaincy days for the first weeks 🙁 , after some creative accounting to bring in some Chelsea, West Ham & Forest players i'm happy again, though really need Colwill to become nailed for Chelsea or its back to the drawing board

It would also be a challenge to bring him in if he takes off.
Who's in your team for now? I have
        Pickford (Areola)
        Gabriel, Martinez, Estupian, Botman (Beyer)
        Salah, Rashford, Saka, Mbeumo, (Brownhill)
        Jesus, Haaland (Archer)
Like that I have 10 starters in case of injury. (Will check on Martinez but think he starts)

yeah that's it too, after Salah's first haul in pre season i'd wager most teams without him now will panic and bring him straight in

          current team
          Johnstone
          Shaw, Saliba, Estupinian
          Salah, Rashford, Saka, Ensico
          Haaland, Jesus, Ferguson

          fodder bench

Nice balance there Lugs. Good to have Jesus to swap out in case Nkuku takes off. Kinda doubt it though. Not many BDL strikers hitting it off in PL...

Interesting to see how Keane Lewis-Potter gets on in pre-season and possibly into the season proper. Bought for the long term for big money but has significant talent to make an impact and give Frank another option in attack for Brentford. Currently 0.0% owned and only 5.0…

    Flavour of the day!

    Pickford
    Gabriel - Estupinan - Dalot
    Salah - Bruno - Martinelli - Foden - Enciso
    Haaland - Jesus

    Areola - Bell - Baldock - Archer

Foden can become Maddison or Nkunku if he doesn’t look nailed.

Dalot if not nailed will be Porro and will upgrade Estu to James/Chilwell around gw 3 or 4.

Basically want maximum City, Arsenal and Brighton to start with.

    Thoughts? 🙂
