There's a bit of a dichotomy here: plan ahead, but be flexible. Stick to the plan, but don't stick to the plan.

Lol, that was FPL twitter last season. Telling people they needed to use WC and FH to avoid taking hits for the blanks and DGWs. Then the DGWs came and they were advocating taking hits, because it was a DGW.

I took hits as a joke at the beginning of last season and never recovered from it.

They can be planned well enough to replace a wildcard though.

How’s that contradictory?? Have a plan but be ready to adapt the plan to new information.

Like my current plan is my two Brighton boys will be my first transfers out and are mainly in as price points but if they play really well or other fires come up first I’ll adapt.

Fair point. The tips are all from the top HoF managers I’ve interviewed, might be some slight contradiction in their styles, or my write up could’ve been better. I suppose it’s a fine art judging when to abandon a plan, and when to keep patient trusting that it’s still sound.

Doesn't say that in the article so naturally everyone reading would assume it's all from your mind. Your logo and subscribe button plastered over the article as well, also suggesting these thoughts are your own. There are even speech marks

Though I still think it's a weird and confusing article to write and read: *People's opinions I've gathered, but I won't reference who they are or what they said, just trust me.*

Right, I always count the bold text as editorial and not part of the article. Apologies.

I think the article is written well, but it does feel a bit sus. Why refuse to mention the individuals you are getting these ideas from.... and instead use their ideas to funnel people towards your channel? Seems like it would have been perfectly fine to own the ideas for yourself.

A decision that's impossible to make until nearer the deadline. We don't what new signings City will bring in, and who will leave. We don't even know how long KDB will be out for, if at all.

Kovacic is likely a Gundogan replacement, so as it stands, nothing has really changed with Foden's situation so far.

Kovacic, although a very good player, is nowhere near as good as Gundogan at playing that #8 role and getting into the box so that already is a change in Foden's situation in my opinion.

          • 14 Years

You think Foden is better suited to that role than Kovacic?

How often has Pep trusted Foden to play deep in the midfield? I thought he usually deploys him in the front 3.

Yeah I do think Foden is more suited to it than Kovacic.

There's never really been a need for Pep to play him there since they had Gundo. He did trust him there in the biggest game of all though, the Champions League final when KDB went off injured.

I enjoy a bit of playing around with team price points, but far too early to get to individual player selection. Those choices, at this point, can only be made on prior seasons performances. There's pre-season and this transfer window to be considered first.

Both are good squads considering what we know right now.

There are plenty of very appealing options in the 8.0-9.0 bracket, for sure: Arsenal and Utd mids, Jesus, TAA... Watkins and Wilson too.

There are also a raft of players at 7.0-7.5 all of which have arguements both for and against. Foden, Grealish, Diaz, Maddison, Sterling, Mount, Bowen... Also Nkunku, Darwin, Gakpo, Isak.

I'm sure SOMEONE like Foden will prove to be more pro than con and emerge from that group, but at this stage we have absolutely no way of knowing. We'll all pontificate and prognosticate but it's totally unknowable.

It certainly seems like those in the 8.0-9.0 bracket are more assured of starts and points, and the problem with having Salah is that it reduces the number in that bracket you can reasonably fit in. All the more so if one of them is TAA.

Thinking of skipping out on the whole Liverpool appeal. TAA is too much in my humble opinion. I’m not entirely convinced on his new role. Maybe after a few preseason games he’ll be worth a better assessment.

    Not keen on Robbo either.

Then there’s Salah. Something just seems off. Maybe he is at the end of his ‘every season is a haul’ phase. Either way I’m struggling to make a case to put him on my team with his price being so high. I can allocate that cash to two other guaranteed starters who will return. Guess I’m just not totally convinced with Pools appeal this season.

Like I said, preseason games will be the deciding factor.

    Thoughts?

I think they will smash it, but my gut says it won't be the usual suspects like Salah and TAA....
In defense if it has to be anyone then it is TAA, but other than that there are too many options, and my gut says it could be the year for Diaz and szobozlai

I’m expecting a big season from Liverpool. They’ve strengthened in the positions they needed too.

They have no UCL and whilst they do have EL, that competition will be used to bring on the youngsters and give bit players a confidence boost.

Good point! I think that’s what scares me the most thought with Pool. They have the potential to do so well but if last season is the marker, though they did get better, we could be in for another slow start. Especially since the new players may very well need time to actually settle in with what Klop has planned.

Preseason is all I can say.

Hey fellas...hope everyone's team is setting up nicely....
Just a question, for a 4.5 defender from Newcastle, why is everyone rushing to botman, and not looking at Dan burn? Almost played the entire last season and prettyuch gathered the same points as botman....
It's something I'm considering for my 4th defender so any information would help...

Targett was injured for most of last season and he may start nicking minutes off burn. He doesn't have the attacking threat to make up for it either

I was looking at the same. Burn is .5 cheaper if I remember correctly. So that’s a 4m regular starter that can haul with the clean sheet points.

Prob should’ve kept that one quiet and to self.

    1 AVOID BANDWAGONS

This one is especially applicable at the start of the season when transfer activity is high. At the start of 2022/23, Josh Dasilva (£5.0m) scored two goals in the first two games from just 0.07 expected goals (xG). Unsurprisingly he wasn’t able to maintain that huge overperformance and his next goal wasn’t for another 16 Gameweeks. Underlying numbers and the eye test are a good way to assess if they’re a bandwagon or not.

What a load of nonsense. Does the author even know what a bandwagon is? What does that daft last sentence even mean? He gives one example of a failed bandwagon, but what about Lundstram, Yaya, Ramsay, etc and the stubborn people who refused to jump onboard, because they thought they couldn’t keep it up and were burnt badly?

    1. Deulofail
      • 10 Years

If Dasilva got an xG of 2.00 in those first two games, even more people would buy him, he would cease to be a bandwagon and he would continue to score freely up until your GW19 wildcard!

He wasn’t even that much of a bandwagon anyway.

*I may have owned him after his goal. 😳

Mahrez and Vardy were getting called bandwagons from GW1 the year Leicester won it.

I won the FFS Cup a few years ago, but no secret tactic. I never pick a team to win a H2H match, it just coincided with a really good FPL season and a lot of luck.

Easier said than done, but the trick is not to avoid bandwagons, but time when to hop on and when to jump off.

Perhaps a better way of wording that is to avoid bandwagons that don’t have good underlying numbers and/or pass the eye test, didn’t the likes of Lundstram, Yaya etc show promise? There can of course be big outliers too once in a blue moon (pun not intended)

What is your understanding of what actually constitutes a bandwagon? The one example you gave in your article, was a failure. There have been countless examples of successes that have cost people who dismissed them as a flash in the pan dearly. You only need to go back to last season and the likes of Mitoma and Watkins.

For me, it’s as simple as loads of people jumping on someone showing form, regardless of how it turns out.

Even if it doesn’t pan out you potentially make some team value which I always find gives me a big advantage in the second half of the season where I make up a lot of ground.

For me a bandwagon is that player everyone jumps on who has unsustainable overperformance or in other words a “trap”. Another example I remember last season was Antony who scored a few games in a row after signing, from low xG, then his numbers fell off. “Avoid traps” probably would’ve been better wording!

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. You seem to think that a bandwagon is a move doomed to failure, but to me, it’s a massive pile on which could go either way.

    Leno Areola
    Chilwell James Estupinan Fofana Bell
    Rashford Son Saka Odegaard Rice
    Haaland Jesus Woodrow

I had set up the 4 Arsenal as well but have already changed it. If one of your non-Arsenal players gets injured or suspended GW1 you'll either have to take a hit or keep them.

It intrigued me because if Odegaard or Havertz were to get injured there's a chance Rice plays #8 rather than CDM and in that scenario he would probably be the best 5.5 midfielder.

At the moment, I would say Rice could start in GW1 as an 8 anyway. 6 seems more likely, but it's too early to say. If Partey and Jorginho are still around, and no one else is ready for that 8 spot, it might be Arteta's only option for the time being.

Okay but that's just for GW1 injury. Not too likely, and I would have a decent first sub. If it's really the best move, then a hit wouldn't be so bad anyway if I'm getting an early move on bandwagons. Swings and roundabouts innit

James could be Chilwell, it’s gameweek 3 when we want Chelsea really is the concern which given James and Chilwell injury record would be an anxious wait!! Haha, I do realy fancy Martinelli tho, and triple Arsenal attack ,so may have to explore different options

If I didn’t have Salah I’d be very tempted to start with 3 Arsenal mids! Currently on Gab + Saka & Ode, though I might end up downgrading Ode to Marti to give me an extra .5 to play with. Really intrigued by Chelsea though and won’t rule out going early on some of their players if I like what I see in pre season.

Been on Jesus, Martinelli and Saka in virtually every draft I’ve done, just having a play around atm, a midfield of Martinelli, Saka, odegaard, Bruno and Rashford looks very tempting!!! I’m Looking forward to seeing how Chelsea Fare in preseason too, could be a decent shout to start with one of James or Chilwell at the start If it doesn’t completely comprise the rest of the team

I think it would kill some people to say something positive, or nice.

I've heard he might get caught in the upside-down this season, given potential incomings. I'm far from knowledgable on the subject though

Too much uncertainty at the moment. No one knows how Villa will line up or who's in favour at the back. Preseason should help. Pau Torres a better pick. He's likely to play because of the huge transfer fee.
