Here's the set and forget team from last season that would have scored you the most points. The best formation was a 3-4-3 formation as usual.

    Haaland, 11.5, 272 (C)
    Kane, 11.5, 263
    Tony, 7, 182

    Salah, 13, 239
    Ødegaard, 6.5, 212
    Martinelli, 6, 198
    Rashford, 6.5, 205

    Trippier, 5, 198
    White, 4.5, 156
    Trent, 7.5, 156

    Raya, 4.5, 166

    Bench: 4.5, 4, 4, 4

    Sum: 100m, 2519p

But that team doesn't make use of its bench so doesn't come close to being the best set and forget.

"If you had this following team (courtesy of Twitter user @sertalpbilal) for the whole season however, you would’ve gotten 2747 points and an overall rank of #72 without using a single chip:

      Ortega
      Trippier Mee Saliba
      Salah Ødegaard Rashford Martinelli
      Haaland© KaneⓋ Toney
      :Raya Ramsey Mings Castagne "

The auto-subs make all the difference. Makes me think spreading the money from not having TAA to strengthen the defensive depth may be optimal.

Gvardiol to Man City. Probably not a good idea getting a city defender now, apart from maybe John Stones?

Not so sure about Stones either. He's definitely first choice in the inverted RB role but Rico Lewis played it confidently post-World Cup.

      Pickford - Areola
      Shaw - Estupinan - Gabriel - Baldock - ?
      Saka - Rashford - Mitoma - ? - ?
      Haaland - Jesus - Archer

Slightly off topic, but why is there so much love for Luke Shaw. He is in literally every draft, and the pundits basically just “ho hum” over it.

He was central defender for basically the second half of last year and only managed 2 assists in the premier league. Is he going back to left back this year?

In short yes. He was there because of CB injuries, they don’t actually want him there.

Only played CB when Martinez got injured, but he’s back fit. Most clean sheets in the league last season with a better keeper arriving, on set-pieces, people have money to burn, etc.

      +1

Shaw is 28 years old, 8 of his 11 FPL seasons were below 100 pts and he has never got even 130 points. Not once.

5.5 is a nice price point to have, but surely there are better options than Shaw.

I haven't considered Shaw once, never been in any of my drafts. I think there are cheaper options that match or better his points. Certainly better options in terms of value which enable to use more budget in midfield (the prime area this season in my opinion).

      For me it's:

      - In a solid team defensively
      - Excellent for bps
      - Great attacking potential

Pretty straightforward for me. Even when he's been at CB he's been good for bps too

He's someone I will consider when he has a good run of fixtures but I think it's a mixed bag to start with from a defensive point of view. Spurs, Arsenal and Brighton in the first five doesn't scream clean sheets to me.

      1. x.jim.x

Probably some Man Utd bias from some content creators, but that doesn't mean he's a bad option.

Man Utd were defensively good last season, in terms of clean sheets. He has some set pieces. Whether Man Utd will be as strong defensively this season, with presumably ETH being under some pressure to play more attractive football, remains to be seen.

I like him for GW1 and he's easy to shift to another defender if Man Utd don't look so good.

Wonder which of all the 'top' teams have had the best squad correction this window - i.e. fringe players out, actual talent in. Chelsea have sold so many, brought in only a few, so that's definitely less clutter. Citeh losing Mahrez, already saw Gundo head off, brought in Kovačević. Liverpool getting serious cash for Hendo too, like under normal circumstances he'd have been given a free to go and get games.

    1. LangerznMash

If Liverpool sign a world class defensive mid to replace Fabinho/Henderson then I'd probably say they've done the best business. Chelsea is just madness. City need to bring in a quality creative player to replace Gundo (Kovacic not good enough) and Mahrez, especially if Bernardo also leaves.

Pewls holding midfield wasn’t great at all. Fabinho just doesn’t cut it and Hendo is over the hill, so ya, basically anything decent is an upgrade there.

On a sort of related topic, it feels like the big loser in this Saudi money saga is the American League. Messi aside, it’s no longer the destination for great players to sunset their careers.

    Jesus 32.8% ownership
    Martinelli 13.8% ownership

Jesus is useful for a quick switch to Nkunku GW3 or Gakpo/Darwin or a later switch to Isaak. All in the same price range. Jesus is safer but Martinelli is tempting...

My one differential at the start of last season was instead of Martinelli, might start with him over Jesus this season if a decent second forward emerges I can have over Jesus

      Pickford
      Shaw Estupinan Gabriel
      Rashford Saka Bruno Martinelli Mitoma/Mbeumo
      Haaland Gakpo/Nkunku

I see Mac10 chipped in with 1 assist and 2 shots … and the final mid, Szoboszlai with zeros too.

Hmmm I'm quite wary of making any assumptions about Liverpool's setup this season after what was at best a very mixed year (ultimately saved by that late run) and so many changes, so an article doing just that while presupposing the main XI including a player that's on the verge of leaving (leaving the team temporarily with no-one that typically plays as an anchor) seems even stranger to me.

4 big changes in midfield, rumours of an RB/LCB being targeted (or both), questions over where TAA will play and what sort of role he'll have, surely just waiting and seeing makes more sense than guessing? Unless it's in the paid part of the article (in which case ignore this), no mention of Curtis Jones and how he may fit into things here either, despite having played minimum 55 mins in every match in that run from GW30 onwards (80+ mins on 7 occasions) and looking pretty good in that system

I'm a fan of LR and his FPL punts and risky transfer picks. From listening to The Wire, which I enjoy, he isn't someone I would really listen to for their take on team tactics or to give any real insight other than basic attack and defence stats.

Haven't got access to the paid part of the article, so maybe he really has some great insights into Liverpool's style of play this coming season.

More of risk to Burn's minutes than Botman's. Targett 'could' get a look in at left back.

Probably not an indicator, but Targett lined up with the rest of the first choice back four last night against Rangers. Burn came on in the second half, initially at left CB, as part of a raft of substitutions, before moving to left back.

There were suggestions that a left back was on the shopping list for this summer, but it hasn't panned out like that so far. Livramento seems more of a target than a left back from the rumours.

I figured this season he'd begin to utilise him in midfield more than elsewhere but if KDB is fit and we have the Mahrez situation that may alter things, so let's see

Not sure why so much is being made of Liverpool’s run from 30-38. They drew against Arsenal at Anfield (decent result but scored a v late equaliser) but other than that?

Drew against villa (late equaliser), drew against Southampton (?!), beat leeds and Leicester comfy (both relegated), then w ham, forest, spurs (late goal), brentford all by one goal.

3 draws, scraped 4 wins and beat 2 teams who now play in the champo. Hardly the stuff of legends?

Remain to be convinced and don’t think preseason will answer any questions, given most of the teams they are playing against are second rate (bayern aside).

    Areola - Bell - Baldock - Archer

It’s basically the template but James + Son Vs TAA + Mbuemo so could be worth doing

Have the exact draft, but with Shaw instead of James. No Liverpool kinda worries me a lil bit tho.

Lateriser I love reading your stuff but please stop using corporate nonsense like ‘optionality’. The word you’re looking for is ‘choice’

It is very corporate and does mean 'what do you want? with circumstances/conditions built in'. In short it's choice, but he's choosing to break choice out for better and for worse - for more in-depth analysis of a decision making process.

It's your choice if you want to employ this practice. Some (and LR) have previously called it 'over-thinking' 🙂

Thoughts on this TAA, Salah, and Haaland team?

    Ramsdale
    TAA Saliba Estupinan
    Salah Saka Mbeumo Enciso
    Haaland Gakpo/Darwin Wissa

    Areola Baldock Anderson Gusto

If Man Utd flop you could grab an early lead. But if they don’t…

    FT: Karlsruher 2 - 4 Liverpool
    Goals: Darwin, Gakpo, Jota x2
Assists: Salah, Jota, Gakpo, Mac Allister

    That narrows it down then!

Watched the game and TAA was playing like a 6 rather than inverted full back, but could've just been filling in due to no Hendo/Fabinho, and Mac was on the bench. Entire team swapped at half time

Attacking, played great. Linked up well with Gakpo and Jota. Got the assist for one of Jota's goal too

Interesting to play a player who can’t defend in defensive midfield

Haha aye. The sort of fixture you can get away with it anyway, they did look very vulnerable at times

Which combination scored more points across the season?

    A) Son and Porro
    B) Son and Moreno (providing fit)
    C) Nkunku and Madison

-Options A and B would be in a 4-5-1 formation
-Option C would be in a 3-5-2 formation

C for me - bullish on Nkunko

    Cheeky 343

    TAA Gabriel Estupian

    Saka Martinelli Rashford Encisco

    Nkunko Gakpo Haaland

Quite like the coverage and balance here?

      I like it!!

I like Gakpo and had him in a couple of my drafts but always seem to downgrade him to 4.5 and bring in Foden in mid

With man city exits and injuries I can't see Foden not being 100% nailed

Backing ManC and Arsenal attacking threats heavily:

    Pickford (Areola)
    TAA Estupinian Henry (Beyer) (Baldock)
    Rashford Saka Martinelli Foden (Anderson)
    Haaland Jesus Alvarez

    Thoughts?
