I am frankly stunned by the number of people I see contemplating a wildcard with perfectly workable teams.

Yep but see it every season , sprinting in a marathon for short term gain.

Seems like it's been pretty volatile early on?

      Stones/Gabriel/Shaw injuries
      Not having Mitoma/Mbeumo gw2
      Not having Chelsea GW3

The volatility drives up the FOMO factor I think

I do believe this game rewards discipline and long term strategic thinking
That being said Sterling has almost 1m new owners ahead of GW4.

I don't think missing a player's haul is a reason to wildcard though. Even if you had all three of those injured/benched defenders, Shaw had GW1+2 so that's your second or third FT to deal with that, and the other two could be dealt with via FTs too. People just need to relax. Even after 4 weeks and an IB to contemplate / delve into things, it's still little information to go on, and quite a long time to wait to be able to make wholesale changes again

          People wanted
          Isak after Gw1.
          Mitoma and Mbeumo after GW2.
          Sterling and Maddison after GW3

That's hit territory if you've got defender issues. Add a few more wants, have nots, price changes and perceived upgrades and it's not hard to see the temptation

I'm not saying it's the right way to play the game but I do think that's how most people process the volatility

I don't even think it's necessarily that their teams aren't workable I think it's more they've viewed the landscape and their opinion has changed. The start of the season we don't know a lot of things, like how/where Havertz would play and how it would affect Arsenal. Who starts for Brighton and does form for players like Mitoma continue. Do teams like West Ham show their European form in the league. Once they see a few games people then adjust accordingly.

From a form over fixtures perspective I wanted Chelsea assets from day 1, I was happy to start an always attacking Chilwell vs Liverpool and then I thought the rest would (on paper) be pretty clean sailing - glad it wasn't vs West Ham. But I didn't know who to get, now people are fancying the likes of Jackson because they've seen him more, or they can see how Sterling is being used in this system.

I had Mbeumo from the first draft I made, when Kane got sold, I got greedy and put in Richarlison for an OOP punt, knowing I wanted Mbeumo more than Richarlison, but I got greedy. I had Akanji at the back too and all the Arsenal talk got me scared and for EO purposes I snagged an Arsenal defender (granted, the wrong one, Gabriel, when I originally went for White on my switch but decided I wanted 0.5M in the bank).

You've then got the watchlist. I'm sitting on Rashford and Martinelli who haven't done as much as you'd have hoped whereas the players who you liked in pre-season but were unsure of (Diaby, Maddison, Luis Diaz) or strikers like Wissa (always gonna be a shout with Toney suspended), Awoniyi (scored NINE in his last seven consecutive PL games), Isak who are all performing great.

These factors make people want to re-shape their teams, again for the longer term, hoping the form maintains and they can navigate until Christmas with hits. (It's also easier when you get ahead and then match your team to template to stay there) as opposed to chasing later.

Finally people have FOMO, I actually don't think some players will haul but I cover myself for EO purposes. I didn't want Martinelli vs FUL but his 10% ownership had me a bit worried. Others feel the same, hence benching Gusto over Estupinan for some.

My two cents at least. (Not that I'm wildcarding).

People have had ideas of players they wanted, fear of high ownership of other players ruining their ranks.
Players people have tipped to perform well but were scared of getting (Bowen, Diaby, Rodri, JWP, Diaz) show up makes them want to go with their original thought process.
People like fixtures of one team but previous seasons or general "name" bias scares them. Chelsea fixtures for example.
People being unsure who would actually start Isak/Wilson argument.

All these questions/doubts/thoughts are being answered and people are reacting.

what I am trying to do this season, is just play how I want to play. Not swayed by public opinion. So far, largely, I have followed that rule. But when it comes to captaincy, im scared not to cap Haaland. Was considering Bowen this week, glad I didn't.

Start of the season I said this...

My team was beautiful. Jumped on the forums 48 hours before the season started, saw the Kane transfer, "ruined" my team. Still got 83 points GW1, but could've had Mbeumo instead of Richarlison and Akanji instead of Gabriel which would've been a 29 point swing for GWs 1 & 2 and would've left me set perfectly for my GW3 transfers instead of trying to fix those two mistakes.

              Idiot I am.

next season I might just make a team without looking at any fpl content or sites. Despite my best efforts, I was probably swayed a bit this season. The cap thing is annoying, feels like it needs to be auto haaland cap, i don't need to see anything to know that.

I just enjoy the chatter etc here, then I get sucked into the EO's and stuff and for the most part my rank doesn't suck over the past however many seasons, but since I've stopped playing money league's seriously I've never been half as focused

Exactly, I bench boosted gw1. But then I wildcard gw2.

Initially I was going to keep my gw1 team and rotate that bench if it looked OK. But there were a number of factors which changed my mind.
For example there were three Chelsea I could get easily with a wildcard, I could get rid of Richarlison who looked awful, Diaby and Maddison looked great.

The wildcard could clear most of my Arsenal and and Man United players as I knew that most would have the issue of them. I could focus on the Man City attack while also taking the Salah gamble - plus I was able to take a risk on a Forest player. While also allowing me to clear my bench.

My gw2 tuned out to be 9 points worse than if I did my one planned transfer gw1 team.
But that wildcard team came roaring back gw3 - it now looks wonderfully set for gw4. I have made a lot of profit on price rises.

I now plan to reach close to the gw9 wildcard type team through normal transfers between now and then with 7m in the bank - focusing on Liverpool, Newcastle, Villa, and West Ham and Spurs etc.

Son playing too wide very isolated from play - his only hope is if he plays centrally either behind the striker Maddison's role - or as the no9 instead of Richarlison. Son seems to have lost some pace as well from what I saw so far.

    Martinez
    Trippier Chilwell Udogie
    Diaz Maddison Sterling Saka
    Haaland Awoniyi Jackson

    Areola Bowen Tavares Pinncok

People are scared of benched points because of some psychological quirk I think. Benching a haul somehow feels worse then not owning the player at all? If rather have points scorers on my bench than not in my squad

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 2 days ago

I can answer this one: It's a combination of the stress level involved in picking that spare player to bench, only to (often) see the benched guy haul while one starter or the other does worse

If it happens once or twice, it's bearable. But it does get pretty frustrating to have it happen often. Doesn't actually *reduce* your points (as you said, you still have the benched player here and he could even be auto-subbed like Gusto was for many), but being a source of frustration reduces the fun factor for what's still meant to be a game, not a chore. It's like every time I went against Haaland (C) last season and watched a hat trick. Not once. Not twice...

But yeah, I think it's similar to the arguments against having Salah if you can afford him this season: if you won't cap him but can easily afford him with Haaland and many other great assets this season, you lose nothing from having him unless you think he'll be outscored by the cheaper players

    Hi DZ!

Frustrating late loss of the Areola CS, but I don't think that makes buying/starting him a bad decision. That's 92 minutes before conceding the first shot on target with no other saves to make, so that's Ederson-level trolling: can't be predicted. Definitely starting Leno against that team; speaking of which... Post-WC4 here:

    Leno
    Udogie Chilwell Disasi Cash
    Maddison Salah Sterling (V)Saka Mbeumo
    (C)Haaland
    .
    Areola Wissa Henry Semenyo

    0.8m ITB. 440k OR

Thinking of rolling the international break FT (hopefully no flags), then Saka + Disasi to Bruno + Schar in GW6 for free. Could easily sell flagged players instead of these two though. Diaby + Alex Moreno possibly coming in by GW8

    Any early thoughts?

Yeah, that wasn't the response to Pickford's performance when Everton conceded late last week.

Explained my observation of Pickford in a reply above. My issue with him is beyond the one match. I kept him after GW1 because of this, but GW2 scared me and then GW3 made it clear: not conceding enough shots on target to make saves (Dyche effect), not saving enough from the few he does face... Really bad combo for points

You're looking at my route to triple Villa there 🙂

Possibly Mbeumo + Henry to Diaby + Alex Moreno in GW8, keeping Wissa because there's less competition among forward options in FPL (for now) and I might rotate him

        Thanks!

Not brave enough for that captaincy call yet. I think Areola's been helping West Ham a lot, but Haaland will be better than previous opponents at placing the ball away from him. West Ham do give up the chances this season, which is why I've got Areola for saves now anyway. That's not great when facing City

Summary: West Ham game looks good enough for me to avoid overthinking the default (C)Haaland

I'll be happy with a Madders/Sterling/Saka VC haul though 🙂

A goalkeeper's bread n butter is clean sheets. Ederson will accumulate the most this season. With Pep's tactical tweaks, he'll also get the odd bap for passes completed.
This may be baffling to you, but a player who scores the highest number of points in his position is generally not a stupid option.

well he wont get many saves, he is expensive, and he didn't do well last season. There's no much in his favour other than a good start to the season. He also doesnt have a settled defense in front of him.

He isn't a bad pick, but value wise, he is, based on the above.

The primary theme of this thread is that there is great uncertainty over which keepers will prove successful this season. I can understand people picking the one goalkeeper who is beyond question.

Don’t make the mistake I did. Gravatar has some lame auto setting where it posts your picture at the bottom of every email you send (the email associated with that gravatr). The best part is that when you send the email, you never see that picture. So I was sending emails for 2 years signed off with a picture of klopp and his younger look alike.

I was applying for jobs and things, I think it cost me jobs. I only discovered what was happening years later when I went to my sent box and aw klopp underneath all my resumes.

'Grav' is short for Gravatar - the picture on your profile. The poster is poltiely telling you to put a bleeding picture on your profile - as in internet forum etiquette it is considered rude.

          • 14 Years

People keep saying this. I don't agree. I don't have Salah, but I'm still constantly struggling to afford a free transfer. I think the comment applies to those who keep a super-cheap bench with 4m defenders and a 4.5 forward. Those players are making a rod for their own backs - pricing isn't a big issue, but points are when starters are rotated.

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 7 Years
            3 years, 2 days ago

Yeah, I've got two rotating defenders on the bench and Semenyo parked at 3rd sub

I've got a pretty high TV but I'm 0.5m away from Trippier in the squad I'd like, and definitely locked out of Trent. That said, if I choose to give up the lone Arsenal/Man U spot in my midfield for someone like Foden/Bowen/Diaby (not bad by any stretch), I can get either of those premium defenders

Doesn't matter much for the GW1 template with the uber-cheap bench, as you say

            • 15 Years

Yeah. We're all competing against eachother, so it doesn't matter if you can still make a strong team, it's about making a stronger team than everyone else.

Squeezing every last point out your budget is the essence of this game.

Mud is no issue. We have traditional way to cook with it underground. Mud sticks first to hair and then burns it 😉 This traditional "recipe" has been used by thieves who have robbed lamb.

Robber's steak: "Rosvopaisti is a traditional Finnish food. It is cooked in a deep hole. At the bottom of the hole is put a camp fire with sand and stones. It is cooked there for 3-4 hours. After that, a lamb/roast is put in the hole and covered with hot soil."

As you didn't know, for the future, always whenever on WC, check ASAP possible TV risks and buy those assets who may rise. As simple as that 🙁

Wasn't going to happen without a buy-out clause

I mean, see what Levy did to Kane 😀

No I am determined not to take any -4's this season if possible (barring injuries) as rarely works for me.

I get it, but seriously, hits could work if you have loads of fires! If you have 4 players to remove, a 4 point hit early gets you 3 weeks of points, for just 4 points!

Yeh this is true if your thinking long term could be beneficial hard to make 4 points back though

Fair point - but I find one of the players you got rid of for a -4 invariably does well in two gameweeks etc The less I touch the team I set up, I think the better I will do, because I normally plan anyway.
Basically the idea for me is to try and treat my FPL like as if it is the SKY Fantasy game - fewest transfers possible. I noticed a guy on Fantasy hub Richard Clarke - rarely takes a -4 and has each move meticulously planned - but is flexible if there is changes - very patient. I plan to try to see could I play like that.

The obvious targets I'd say, Sterling and Maddison...for Mitoma and Odegaard (still have Saka / Pedro and Estu from Brighton)

I feel like it can be worth it on double game weeks though
