For those who missed my comment yesterday:

FYI: Liverpool recall Owen Beck (left-back) from loan spell at Dundee to ease their issues in that position. This is to help Joe Gomez who is the only recognised senior option at left-back.

Beck has been one of Dundee's standout players this season and has played 20 matches in Scotland this term, earning his first senior Wales call-up earlier in the season.

Interesting. I hope this doesn’t mean reduced minutes for Gomez - I got him in last week

Probably backup for Robbo (or Gomez for now) for whenever he's back given Tsimikas is likely out for a while

My defence is looking in trouble. Would need to take a hit to make a transfer. Should I wait for more injury news?

    Trent Porro Lascelles Maguire* Trippier*

    Morning all

On the assumption haaland is back, thinking I need a -4 or -8 or sort this lot out for next week, especially if zinchenko is out. Which do you prefer

    A) salah & darwin > gross & haaland -4 (max price for mid is 6.4)
    B) salah, son & Darwin > jota, Bowen & haaland -8

    Current team
    Areola
    Zinchenko / porro/ TAA / cash
    Palmer / Gordon / Saka
    Watkins / Alvarez / Darwin

    Dubravka / Tosin / salah / son

    1. 112kane112
      • 7 Years

      I prefer A - I think -8 is a bit extreme.

Have you considered waiting 1 more week for Haaland?

Salah, Son > midfielders of choice (-4 this week)

Darin > Haaland for free next week

Definitely an option, just nervous that Darwin doesn’t play and also with the other risks that I end up playing with no bench.

Best 2 Mids to replace Salah & Son. I have 2FT.

    A) Bowen

    E) Gross

All great options and probably the question all managers face right now.

Can finally mean we get some interesting steps away from the template.

In my opinion our of the above you go for 1 of A, B, D and 1 of C, E.

I really think E is being overlooked

    Areola - Leno

    TAA - Doughty - Estu - Moreno - Walker

    Saka - Bowen - Foden - Palmer - Neto

    Toney - Watkins - Solanke*

Waiting on Haaland news, if he's fit I will go Solanke > Haaland as well.

One of the better full backs for attacking return potential. Clean sheets have been hard to come by for a lot of teams this season so need to look at defenders with best attacking potential and he definitely fits that

Poor asset. You may get the odd assist or goal but the string of 1 pointers will take away the benefit

Much like with Porro it's because of attacking potential. Not many clean sheets around as it is so might as well go for a defender that can still get points when conceding

Great attacking returns, decent price. In a season with very few clean sheets this is attractive. Fixtures are very good as well, I see them keeping 2 or 3 clean sheets in their next 8 which is probably similar to most good defensive teams. CS + attacking return = bonus

Not going to lie, I have no idea what to do with my team...

    Martinez (Kelleher*)
    Saliba Estupinan Trippier* Andersen* Beyer*

    Son* Salah* Saka Palmer Bowen

    Watkins Alvarez Solanke

    Feel like something similar to:
    Son to Foden
    Salah to Richarlison
    Trippier to Porro(?) or similar

For a hit, might make sense, I have 2FT and 1.2m itb, any ideas appreciated as I'm at a loss.

The other continents hold their season's differently to us in Europe. What is frustrating about AFCON is that it is every two years. Euro's are every four years. AFC are every four years. Copa America is every three years. AFCON needs to be expanded to at least every three years, if not four as well.

It is, however, worth noting, as per Wiki:
"This edition of the tournament was initially planned to be the third since 2019 to take place during the Northern Hemisphere's summer, in order to reduce scheduling conflicts with European club teams and competitions.[2][3][4][5] However it was postponed by CAF to 13 January – 11 February 2024 on 3 July 2022 due to the adverse summer weather concerns in Ivory Coast, whilst retaining the edition's original name for sponsorship purposes.[6][7] This followed the 2021 edition in Cameroon also being moved to the Northern Hemisphere's winter season for similar reasons."

    Areola raya

Gabriel Walker udogie ( tarkowski burn)

Bowen saka foden palmer ( salah)

    Alvarez Watkins (archer)

    Money no problem

Do I replace salah with jota/gross/ gernacho

Or upgrade archer and push ahead with 3 up top?

I think if Neville were to have had a shot at it in England, rather than going to a country he never played in or speaks the language, he may have done well. Doesn’t surprise me though, Rooney has never come across as the sharpest tool in the box. I remember when the BBC were running stories trying to convince readers he is articulate and people who disagree with this are (insert a polarising adjective here) when he did his first punditry gig

I don’t think Haaland will be back for Newcastle, or at least won’t be starting. Based on this, my plan to get him back is: Saliba, Foden and Solanke to Estupiñan, Palmer and Haaland. I would do this over two game weeks. Should I do it all at once, as I am currently planning, or do Saliba for Estupiñan before this deadline? Arsenal will be at home against Palace. I have the exact money for these transfers.

Son to Bowen with the other FT? Could do Alvarez/Darwin > Haaland for a -4 if he's back again for next GW.

    Team:
    Areola (Turner)
    Gabriel, Gusto, Taylor (Trippier*, Branthwaite)
    Saka, Richarlison, Palmer, Son* (Gordon)
    Watkins, Darwin, Alvarez

Btw. Just cause it crossed my mind...

We have now had the following question about a 100 times.

"Best 2 Mids to replace Salah & Son. I have 2FT.

    A) Bowen
    B) Jota
    C) Richarlison
    D) Foden
    E) Gross"

And the template answer has been:
"Bowen and the depending on preference one of the other 4"

Sure, it might be the correct answer, but really does depend on the situation of the asking party, doesnt it?
Where he is on OR, whats the minileague situation, is he chasing on leading, does he need to gain or block?

If the player is chasing he most likely is s*** outta luck choosing the same exact midfield the players ahead of him have.
Much rather then go Olise, Gross, Garnacho or someone else less template.

This is hogwash. People put way, way too much emphasis on EO. It doesn't matter. You pick the players you think will score the most points. It's only half way through the season. Forget chasing and defending and all that crap.

I was 20 points clear in my ML 3 weeks ago. Now I'm behind by 25 all because I decided to keep Haaland instead of sell for Solanke. That's 3 weeks. Imagine having 18 to go... So focus on picking the players you think will score the most and forget about what people around you are doing.

          No it's not.

My sister is an FPL casual and comes to me asking for advice so her team mirrors mine in a lot of ways. She has like 9/11 of my players every week and yet she gained 30 points on me over 5 weeks with just her 5th mid and 3rd defender being different.

It's a lot easier to make ground than you think. 3 players off-template is enough even if you have the same captain. 4+ is a big difference that can swing 50 points in one week.

          1. HelmutCool

If awerage 6p/week is enough then sure.
If her 5th mid and 3 defender are only differencies, then I am guessing you both had injury trouble, or her picks were well chosen.
Seems this season its hard to gain a lot with defenders/goalies. As its been horrible to try and pick up clean sheets.

Not like in some earlier seasons when you were disappointed if not 2 of your would not get CS.

A lot of Villa fans on twitter up in arms because no Villa players made Carra and Nev's premier league team of the year.

At the end of the day its a very simple explanation. Whilst Villa as a team have been the 2nd best team in the league, when considering Villa's stand out performers who have been Douglas Luiz, Paqueta, Watkins and Bailey, there have been other players from other teams who have still been better in the positions they play.

Bailey doesnt get in ahead of Salah and Watkins doesnt get in ahead of for me both Haaland and Solanke. Haaland is still the top goalscorer despite playing 4 games less and Solanke is joint second top scorer (would actually be on 13 goals now if Luton game wasn't abandoned) and also plays for a worse team.

Only DL would have a shout for a midfield slot but again he would compete with Rodri and Rice who again it could be argued have been better in that position. Paqueta would probably compete with Palmer and again for me, Palmer would edge that.

At the end of the day its all about who are the best players in their positions. You cant just crowbar a player in because you don't want to leave them out if there are other players more worthy of a place in the position they play in.

I actually think both Carra and Nev have done this with the inclusion of Bowen. In what world does Bowen get in ahead of Haaland? Haaland has been the best centre forward with 14 goals from 15 games so there should be no place for Bowen regardless of how well he has done.

I like Gary's team more than Jamie's, makes the most sense to me, but I still wouldn't have Rodri in there, nor Saliba & Udogie, but I couldn't even immediately tell you who to replace them with because defenders have been so badly lately. Not sure why Rodri gets in there? No City player should be in there bar Haaland, IMO.

To discredit Watkins because he's scored 3 less, even though he's assisted 10 more is criminal. If you want to play the "would be on 13 goals..." card then can we play the, NFO shouldn't have had 10 men and Solanke probably doesn't bag a hattrick in that game so would be on less goals card?

I think the biggest omission I've seen absolutely nobody mention, poor fella, is Hee-Chan Hwang. Guy has 1/3 of Wolves goals plus three more assists and well, it's Wolves! Granted I don't think he superseeds anyone but not even getting a mention is harsh in my opinion. Feel sorry for Gordon not getting a mention as well to be honest, everyone's commented on how well he's been playing too.

WHU fan here but I don't think Paqueta gets near team of the season. Class but only five assists and two goals? I'd expect more from him. Palmer is definitely justified though.

Side note, Gary has both Haaland and Bowen in and Bowen has played most of the season up top for us. Does he deserve to be in there over Watkins, probably not, Solanke, definitely.

Im sorry but the analogy you have tried to make with Solanke is utterly ludicrous. Players getting sent off rightly or wrongly and controversial decisions are frequent events that are part of football and happen every single week. Strikers and other players benefit from such things and also loose out in equal measure. Its not even remotely comparable to the highly unlikely event of a match being called off due a medical episode with only 25mins left and Solanke having a legitimate goal voided. Come on use some common sense!!

Players like Hwang and Gordon have indeed had outstanding seasons but again the point is who do they displace? Gordon plays on the left of a front three. There is no way he gets in at the expense of Son so he can only get an honourable mention. Its not even a debate for me that the front 3 would have to be Son, Haaland and Salah. Last time I checked, Haaland is still the top goalscorer despite playing 4 games less.

Gary's team is a joke. You simply cant have 4 forwards! Classic case of trying to crowbar someone in because you dont want to leave him out. It just doesnt work. Who is the best player in the position they play. Its Haaland so therefore there is no place in the team for Bowen.

If you had to pick a team and your life depended on them winning, in no world does anyone pick any of Watkins, Bowen, Gordon etc and leave out Salah, Haaland, Son etc.

And of course Rodri should be in there! Are you kidding me!? Literally the best midfielder in the league. City's driving force. They have lost every game they have played when Rodri was absent through suspension. Defensive midfielder but does everything and also scores important goals.

    FWIW to those discussing Salah/Son's potential price drops, for those hoping they drop a lot if you sell them here's some stats;

Neto (WOL) lost 87% of his teams selected by (TSB) and dropped 0.2M between GW9 & GW20.
Mbeumo (BRE) lost 77% of his TSB and dropped 0.2M between GW14 & GW20
Haaland (MCI) lost 47% of his TSB and dropped 0.1M between GW16 & GW20
Isak (NEW) lost 45% of his TSB and dropped 0.1M between GW8 & GW13
Pope (NEW) lost 50% of his TSB and dropped 0.1M between GW14 & GW20

I would really not expect huge drops in price. Especially with the red flags applied.

Looks pretty good. My problem would be benching a 5M defender each week and cursing the point on bench. Might do Saliba->Doughty get extra 1.2M funds.
Also kdb + Jota might both be starting from the bench. At least until KDB is 100% fit.

I did have Doughty over Saliba in my draft before I did this - it is still a possibility for sure.

I know KDB is unlikely to be playing 90 minutes but to get him in prior to a price hike is attractive and if he does play (fingers crossed) he has potential to haul against the Newcastle defence (see the Liverpool game!)

Jota is my Salah replacement, I think he will start and may end up playing up top with Nunez being poor. Extremely low ownership too, is Jota

That creates a benching headache each week.

Archer whilst not spectacular is an easy bench each week and doesn’t disrupt the balance of the team. Seen a lot of bench points recently mostly down to this inbalance

Having bench points is not a problem. Getting rid of a good player with team value invested and decent fixtures coming up (after Liv) is a bigger issue.

It's not like you are doing anything with the money so might as well keep your options open.

The issue with team balance only matters when budget comes into play. And while Son and Salah are gone, budget doesn't matter.
