Our team of Hall of Famers and guest writers are offering regular contributions throughout the 2023/24 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) campaign. Here, former FPL champion Simon March debates the decline of Fantasy defenders.

Gameweek 5 Wildcard

Now that we’re just beyond the halfway point of the season, it seems like a good time to look at some of the big talking points from the first half of the campaign and consider what lessons we can draw from them for the Gameweeks to come.

One standout theme from the season so far is the stark absence of clean sheets. For example, my last clean sheet points from a defender came in Gameweek 17 and, before that, Gameweek 13 (and don’t even get me started on goalkeepers…).

It’s possible that I’m just bad at picking defenders but, looking at the ownership percentage of the defenders I do own, that would mean that almost everyone else is too. So what is going on?

More goals, fewer clean sheets

FPL Gameweek 19: Boxing Day's goals, assists, bonus points + stats

So far this season, we’ve seen clean sheets in about 21% of fixtures compared to 27% for the whole of last season. This means that we’re seeing about 22% fewer clean sheets than we did in 2022/23.

We are also witnessing more goals in 2023/24, pro rata, than we did last season, an increase thus far of around 8%. When you combine these statistics, it doesn’t look good for defences.

What is interesting is that many of the backlines you’d expect to perform the best, such as Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, are currently performing at a very similar rate as last season with a clean sheet every three or four fixtures. This is still a far cry from the 2021/22 campaign when the likes of Man City and Liverpool were racking up shut-outs at a rate better than one every two fixtures.

Of course, looking at the defence only tells one side of the story. At this point, we are on course to see nearly 100 more goals this Premier League season than in the last one. So the decline in Premier League defences might, in fact, owe more to improvements in Premier League attacks than defensive deficiencies – as well as all that added injury time.

But, from an FPL perspective, the decline in defenders as viable Fantasy assets has been occurring for some time. This was obfuscated in the stats somewhat last year by a very strong performance by Manchester United with 17 clean sheets, something they look unlikely to repeat this year.

What is striking when looking at defences in the Premier League right now is the lack of consistency, not just in terms of keeping clean sheets, but in the relationship between the teams keeping the most shut-outs and the teams conceding the fewest goals. These are two things you’d expect to correlate quite closely. For example, Aston Villa have conceded among the fewest goals this season (27) yet they have fewer clean sheets than Bournemouth (four and five respectively). The Cherries have conceded eight more goals than Villa, in one fewer fixture.

These seemingly paradoxical relationships are quite typical of Premier League defences so far this season and, what we’re left with, is little substantive reason to trust any team or player when it comes to delivering clean sheets.

Little value in defence

FPL Gameweek 15 Scout Picks: Alexander-Arnold among three Liverpool players

It’s worth noting, of course, that we are only halfway through the season and, historically, we’ve seen teams perform very differently in the second half of a campaign, especially defensively. Newcastle, for example, began 2023 with five clean sheets in a row and Man City are notorious for going on long runs of defensive shut-outs when they need to.

So maybe we shouldn’t rule out defences just yet but, given the decline in FPL output from defensive assets over several seasons now, it raises questions about the value available in defence, particularly as defender prices don’t seem to have dropped at a rate equivalent to their decline in points scored.

In fact, what seems to have happened is that defenders, in general, have seen perhaps a moderate discounting in terms of price while those defenders who are known to deliver attacking returns, such as Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) and Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier (£6.8m), have seen an additional premium added to their price, essentially for being attacking.

This premium makes sense given attacking points are often seemingly the only way to get returns from defenders these days, but it does raise a strategic question: is it worth paying a premium for an attacking defender, if they are not also delivering clean sheets?

Take Alexander-Arnold, for example. The Liverpool full-back has six attacking returns so far this season which is, of course, impressive for a defender, but it still only puts him equal on points with Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon (£6.1m) and only slightly ahead of Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz (£5.5m), midfielders who are £2-3m cheaper than Alexander-Arnold.

In fact, neither Trippier nor Alexander-Arnold, the two best-scoring defenders in the game right now, make it into the top 10 list of defenders in terms of value for money. Neither would make the top 25 if you combined forwards and midfielders. This does not paint a particularly good picture for defensive assets and particularly not premium ones.

Thus, one viable strategy would be to get as good a defence for as little as possible, cross your fingers for a clean sheet or an attacking return and funnel all the money saved into attacking areas. If we look purely at the stats, this seems to be the direction they are pointng us toward.

The challenge, of course, is finding somewhere to spend the money saved on given the absence of premium players currently in the game and the abundance of cheap attacking players such as those mentioned and the likes of Chelsea’s Cole Palmer (£5.6m). Defenders might not currently offer as much value per million as midfielders, but you do need to own defenders and, if the extra money isn’t currently gaining you any greater advantage in attacking areas, you might as well spend it in defence and hope for an explosive return or two or, even better, some consistent clean sheets.

Thus we shouldn’t necessarily rule out premium defenders, particularly as they do score points, but we should acknowledge that, as things stand, they offer something of a false economy in the game.

Conclusion

West Ham v Brighton team news: Estupinan starts, Coufal and Kudus out

Naturally, when you’re looking at small data sets, you can only rely so much on the story they tell. But if teams are scoring more goals and keeping fewer clean sheets, and this has been the direction that things have been trending in for at least a couple of seasons now, you don’t have to be an economist to figure out where the value for money is likely to be, should this trend continue.

Looking at data without context can, of course, be misleading and, there is still a benefit to spending money in defence in terms of absolute points, even if it doesn’t currently yield the same value for money as when it is spent in midfield or up front. Defensive solidity can change and often does, particularly for the top teams, in the second half of the season.

However, if you’re debating where to prioritise spending your money, the strong indication right now is that it should go toward attacking areas first and, only once the advantage here has been maxed out, should you consider investing more of your budget in defence.

Discussed on here lots already I know, but as a Son, Salah and Hee Chan owner still undecided on my replacement strategy. Initial plan is to keep Salah and sell Son and Hee Chan following the assumption that S Korea will go further in the comp that Egypt. My rationale also is that Salah is a season keeper whereas Son is more dispensable. So, replace options:

    a) Foden (whom I don't have a good record of owning previously...the consummate troll!)
    b) Bowen (Brighton game put me off him and I don't see W Ham pushing Sheff U over under Wilder)
    c) Richarlison (seems the best replacement option for Son, probably my favorite pick)
    d) Kulu (will Son missing effect his game?)
    e) Jota (feels like a good time to take a punt on him)

Can you keep Salah benched and still afford Haaland back

From the list above I guess it depends on preference for risk - Foden and Jota could easily get a lot of rotation still though high ceilings if playing. purs will continue to be attacking and no real rotation risk just worry that they will be a bit toothless without Son

I've done Salah> Bowen early to catch price rise/protect against first value drop, and will wait until last mnute for the second move - likely Foden/Richarlison

Yes I have funds already to do Alvarez > Haaland but waiting to gw22 to do that move. Making the initial transfer to beat price changes and holding on the second seems a sensible approach.

Although he didn't do well in his last match, I still think that Bowen is likely to do so at Sheff Utd and then West Ham have Bou at home the next GW.

Yes, I agree with that. I guess it comes down to who you think will get you the most points over the next 2 to 3 GWs and when you plan to transfer them. My bench is too weak to risk injuries in the FA Cup or EFL Cup to who I bring in for Salah and Son, but it is likely that Bowen will be one of them.

I’d still feel quite confident about Spurs; they’ll continue to attack and have good players in Kulu, Johnson and Richarlison. I think Maddison was nearing fitness and did I see they were putting a bid in for Gallagher.

I own Bowen and Foden so stuck with them but Foden’s been good whoever else is on the pitch and hopefully Paqueta supports Bowen.

I’m relying on there being quality sub £6m players so that I have flexibility to bring the big players back. Olise is a big loss but I’m hoping Neto is quickly into his stride and doesn’t get bought by City. There’s a few others as well of course so will stick to this strategy unless something happens (eg Son and Salah gets injured)

If the timeline is Doku is ahead of Haaland and Kdb I would punt on Doku before they play Burnley. Rich is the best mid when replacing Salah/Son.

Egypt went to the finals in 2021, so if we assume they at least make it to the Quarterfinals, Salah would be back at the earliest for GW24. However, if they make the semis, then he wouldn't be back until GW25 at the earliest. I guess it just depends on your team, but I don't want to keep him on my bench for 3+ weeks.

Bowen and West Ham have been playing very good. Brighton dominated that game, surprisingly, so I wouldn't count Bowen as he really only had opportunities on the counter.

Although it is clearly the case that "big in defence" has not been a worthwhile FPL tactic this season, I think that it is always the case that a player is worth the price if they are getting you enough points. So Trippier was worth it during his run of form and TAA has been more recently.

You can always be cpt. hindsight, but we don't know about bad form for sure. Yes Trippier has been poor for a few GWs, but has Luton, Forest and Bournemouth coming up.

Holding on to pricy defenders forces you to pick cheaper midfielders like Mbeumo, Hwang, Palmer, Gordon etc.

I'd argue that those like me with 'big in defense' for most of this season are ranked quite good actually. Because we did'nt get sucked in Alvarez dead run or held on to Rashford for an eternity. Those were never options for 'us'. We had to settle early for Palmer, Hwang and Morris in his DGW 😉

I wouldn't put those last five as good, and therefore the most logical thing to do with Trippier was to sell when he got suspended. Newcastle were knackered, and had lots of injuries. You have to count that in when you measure the difficulty of a fixture. It's not a green fixture away to Luton when you're fatigued.

Endo out could dent Liverpool defense wise. But probably Salah out could potentially cause Trent to play more wide and puts in more crosses. Liverpools attack will be more narrow, so Trent might be used more wide. I would put money on Trent assist vs Bou from a cross, for one of the strikers to nod in.

There are still plenty of clean sheets, you just need to look outside the template. I've had at least one nearly every week.

Wouldn't have served you as well as you'd think since Wilder came back as Villa defensive owners will testify. Would have been CS for Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City, 50% of the games.

The other thing I'd add to this article which I like, particularly the bit about premium defenders being more premium than normal simply because everything else is rubbish is that the perception that certain defences are good has seen their assets rise to silly prices with no attacking returns - e.g. Arsenal and Saliba in particular I'm looking at you here. No way on this earth is he a 5.6m defender.

You surely want to monitor how it goes anyway. Imagine using your transfer to get him back in and he suffers a reoccurrence of it. Sensible call imo is to let him come through his first game unscathed. Everyone will be hoping that is the Newcastle game or better yet the FA Cup which is easier to ignore him for than a Burnley at home.

How do people plan to get salah back in gw24/25?

Does it make sense to go for a cheap 8th attacker like garnacho and keeping money back for this

Rather than going for more expensive bowen / jota / rixharlison options. Thanka

May give Salah a miss but depends if they double in 25 and blank in 26. WC and FH are options on the table

If they make the semi finals he'll miss 24 which would be a shame as its a nice fixture for them. I won't be rushing him back for 25 if they miss 26 for the cup final and it isn't rearranged to somewhere before 26.

Saka to Salah. Garnacho is one option, but there are also a lot of good attacking defenders and it shouldn't be difficult to play 4-3-3 and simply bench Salah. I already have TAA + 2 MCI players (Alvarez included though) in my team. Out of possible dgw players Jota is one to look at and perhaps Kyle Walker, but Stones should be back. Toney is one to watch also. My current plan is to save FH.

I have to sacrifice Watkins to go Salah/Son/Saka/Haaland.

      Richy>Garnacho
      Watkins>Haaland
      Odegaard>Salah

Only had Salah for two game weeks but I'm now converted to the error of my ways! Palmer and Garnacho now make this possible.

Still have Salah... don't know who to get in. Have Richarlison(in my team for a while now), Bowen(Son replacement), Saka(boring) and Palmer.

I'm between Gross and Jota as Salah replacement, guess I can see how Pool play vs Arsenal during the weekend and maybe get a better idea after.

    1. Sir Michael Taker
      • 11 Years

Concern I'd have about Jota is Liverpool have a lot of games coming up unlike a lot of the other sides, particularly if they end up getting an FA Cup replay to boot. There's still going to be a lot of rotating and managing minutes with whatever they have left to get through January.

Its mainly because of the league cup but with a tricky FA Cup tie I can't see Klopp being able to rest as many as he'd hope for that, unless they just throw that competition completely but it wouldn't go down well I'd imagine. Best case scenario is they blow Fulham aside at Anfield in the 1st leg of the League Cup and can rest a few for the 2nd leg.

Groß seems to be one of those players (like JWP in most seasons) that can score loads of points and never get popular. He’s definitely on my shortlist and probably ahead of Jota.

Groß didn't look too good vs Whu. I have Bowen, so I chose Saka and Foden, but Jota would have 3rd on my list (Palmer being the "must have"). It's tight between Saka, Foden, Bowen and Jota. The fear with Jota is that he is slightly injury prone, minutes could be managed and he prolly is a booked transfer out when Salah is back (if there is no double).

      1. Sir Michael Taker

I'd have been more concerned about owning Bowen than Gross off that West Ham-Brighton game. Gross missed a good chance with his head didn't he? Bowen largely anonymous against a side who couldn't keep a cleanie beforehand and missing Lewis Dunk. Not necessarily a criticism of him per se but West Ham as a whole minus Paqueta and Kudus.

Brighton weren't incredibly on it in general but Gross had the most attempts of any player; the most attempts in the box of any player & created a couple if chances too.

I have him and I don't see him as someone that is going to explode much but would be carful about saying he wasn't that good when he's consistent walking out of matches with the highest xGI.

Some of Brighton's finishing in general has hurt him, as has his own misses (which actually haven't been bad in the whole, they've mostly been good saves.)

If you click 'Last Gameweek' above the RMT predictions, you can select GW38 and it will increase it from 6 GWs to the end of the season.

Can also go to the players section for all players rather than just your own team.

    Pep quotes

"Jeremy feels really good and Kevin as well. Kevin was out for a long time so we have to be patient," said the City boss.

"Erling is also a little bit better. It is the bone so that why I have to be a little bit more careful.

"They feel good and are improving. I don't know about Sunday or Newcastle but for the rest they will be ready."

KDB doesn't look like an immediate threat to Foden.

They both dropped almost immediately after the last GW ended so not sure on that, depends if FPL are going to manually stop them from dropping too much which a lot think is happening / will happen. If not then I can see them both dropping 0.3-0.4 in total, Salah doesn't look too far off of another drop already and I imagine moves will be made by some after some of the FA Cup games this weekend.

Aah the bygone days of clean sheets and attaching returns for defenders.

I remember one of my mini league leaders going for a Trent, VVD, Robbo triple up and ignoring Salah altogether. He did very well indeed
