The UEFA Champions League (UCL) returns this week – and so too does the official, free-to-play Fantasy game.

The knockout stages get underway on Tuesday evening, with Manchester City and Real Madrid among the teams in action.

Even if you didn’t get involved in the group stage, there is still an incentive to sign up to play UCL Fantasy for the round of 16 and beyond.

From unlimited transfers to the prizes on offer, we’ve got all you need to know in this article.

SIGN UP TO PLAY UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FANTASY HERE

WHY SIGN UP NOW?

UCL Fantasy prizes

Fair enough, you’re not going to win any mini-leagues or top the overall leaderboard after missing the first six Matchdays (the equivalent of Gameweeks).

But: there are still prizes on offer for anyone signing up now.

Matchday prizes

For each of the remaining seven Matchdays, UEFA are giving away a PlayStation 5.

Doing well isn’t even a requisite: all you need to do is make a sub or transfer and you’ll be entered into the prize draw automatically.

Knockout stage prize

Finish as the highest-scoring manager in the knockout stage only and you’ll also win a PlayStation 5.

We’ve got some essentials below but if you’re completely new to UCL Fantasy, have a read up on how the scoring system works and our basic overview of the rules.

WHEN IS THE NEXT DEADLINE?

UCL Fantasy prizes

There’s no 17:45 GMT kickoff this week, so Matchday 7 gets underway with FC Copenhagen v Manchester City and RB Leipzig v Real Madrid at 20:00 GMT on Tuesday 13 February.

Team leakers can put their feet up for the night: UCL Fantasy managers will get to see the teamsheets from both matches before finalising their squads.

In fact, UCL Fantasy managers can make transfers and changes to their teams right up to kick-off in these two games.

HOW DO TRANSFERS WORK IN THE ROUND OF 16?

If your squad is full of dead wood and eliminated players from the group stage, have no fear: unlimited transfers are here.

Unlimited transfers also apply to anyone signing up to play UCL Fantasy for the first time.

You can pick whoever you want up until 20:00 GMT on Tuesday, providing you:

  • Stick to the €105m budget
  • Select a squad of 15 players (2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders, 3 forwards)
  • Adhere to the following limits:
StageMax. players per club
Round of 164
Quarter-finals5
Semi-finals6
Final8

Free transfers are then awarded as follows throughout the rest of the knockout stage:

MatchdayNumber of free transfers
Before round of 16Unlimited
Before round of 16 second leg3
Before quarter-finals5
Before quarter-finals second leg3
Before semi-finals5
Before semi-finals second leg3
Before final5

CAN I MAKE CHANGES BETWEEN THE ROUND OF 16 TIES?

Yes, you can.

There are two types of changes that UCL Fantasy can make even after a deadline has passed: manual substitutions and captaincy.

MANUAL SUBS

Between the end of one night (eg Tuesday) and the start of another (eg Wednesday) within a Matchday, a maximum of four players can be switched for ones on your bench – unless they’ve been sent off.

For example, if Phil Foden (€8.1m) disappoints on the Tuesday of Matchday 7, you can replace him with a substitute who is yet to play.

It’s slightly different in the round of 16 as the first leg ties are spread out over two weeks, but the same rules apply:

As is the case with FPL, autosubs also replace non-playing names in your starting XI.

CAPTAINCY SWITCHING

Similarly, a poor choice of captain can easily be corrected by changing it to someone who has yet to play.

This new captain will be the only one whose points get doubled.

CAN I PLAY A CHIP BEFORE THE ROUND OF 16 STARTS?

No.

If you’ve still got a Limitless chip intact, you can play it any time apart from Matchday 7 (the upcoming round).

Limitless, for the uninitiated, is effectively a Free Hit with no budget restrictions.

As for the Wildcard, you also can’t play it in Matchday 7 as everyone gets unlimited transfers anyway.

Beyond that, it’s available to use – if you haven’t already.

WHERE TO FIND MORE UCL FANTASY CONTENT

There’ll be more UCL Fantasy articles to come on this site before Tuesday’s deadline.

This game allows us to see the team sheets of the first match in the gameweek and we can still make transfers accordingly. Deadline is kick off time in the first game!

Any reason why FPL cannot do this?

Because it would ruin it for the casuals that earn them so much money accidentally clicking in advertising banners?

If you're that bothered about deadlines and lineups, you're not a casual.

      timezone and all that

Would just be moving the deadline back by 90 mins so timezone wouldn't really be an issue.

Would surely be a huge issue? At the moment, people gain little from leaks in the scheme of things (it often backfires!), so you can choose to ignore them. But any semi-engaged manager in the wrong time zone would feel duty-bound to set an alarm for 3/4/5am if FPL made the change you’re suggesting

There wouldn't be any leaks because everyone gets the official lineups an hour before the deadline.

Not sure how the alarm thing is any different than now? No matter what time the deadline is, there are going to be people on the other side of the world who are shafted - that's the nature of playing a game that revolves around games played in England.

I don’t think that’s right. You can set your team up fine before going to bed the previous day as it stands. Sure, you might find out too late that Walker got benched, but it ain’t gonna cost you your ML in all likelihood. Knowing the confirmed team sheets for at least two teams is another matter

Its such a fun format (apart from the latter stages when the teams are all the same). Really like the manual subs / captaincy twisting.

I think Sky FF has some similarities? Thinking of giving that a try next season

Playing UCL again this season. I just love subbing out those annoying 1 point cameos and manually subbing on someone from the bench. If you only we could do that in FPL!

I tried Sky for the first time this year, but I can never understand the deadlines - sometimes it seems like you can change your team/captains mid-gameweek and other times you can't (might just be me being thick).

It's pretty fun to do on the side though, I just don't care about a lot.

Yeah the deadline needs to be 1st ko for sure but no way will they change the format of FPL so you can make moves every day.

No only three that blank there (TAA, Jota, Palmer) so fielding 11 in GW26 should not be a problem, and you've already got three City and two pool for the DGW25 so I'd save FT this week and use that FT and maybe the GW26 FT to sort out any issue that come up before the BGW26.

    Early transfer thoughts

    25:
    - Save FT and start Porro/gamble on TAA
    - TAA to VVD, Ake /Gvardiol or Reguilon

    26:
    - Sell Liverpool assets (-4/-8)
    - Keep Porro/Palmer/Rich

I want to keep WC27/31 open until after FAC R5 (before 27 deadline). I don't want to FH29, target FH34/37.

    TC25 on Haaland.

    1FT 0.7ITB
    Dubravka
    TAA Gabriel Saliba
    Saka Palmer Rich Foden
    Solanke Darwin Haaland
    (Areola Porro Palmer Taylor*)

      2nd Palmer = Jota?

If TAA is out, or no clear good news, would you want to put the funds towards KDB/Toney maybe?

      1. Tonyawesome69
        • 7 Years
        1 year, 10 months ago

        Haha yes well spotted!

It's a potential option. Not sure I want to sell Rich with 29 in mind. Not enough money if selling Palmer.

        - Palmer to KDB, leaves 3.9m to replace TAA
        - Rich to KDB, leaves 5.3m

Toney could come in for Solanke. Not sure how Watkins/Solanke will fit in DGW28/BGW29 yet.

        1. The Mentaculus
          • 4 Years

Fair enough; guess I'd just take my chances with Trent then if there's any possibility he plays as I don't see all that much appeal to the other DGW defenders unless you want Reguilon primarily for 29. I wouldn't really want to sell Rich either.

          1. Tonyawesome69
            • 7 Years

Reguilon ticks all boxes, DGW25 (not ideal fixtures) and fixture in BGW26/29.

What's your thoughts on Watkins, Solanke, Toney and Haaland between 25-29?

            1. The Mentaculus
              • 4 Years
              1 year, 10 months ago

My enthusiasm for Watkins has been on the wane for a while & I sold him this week. Think the SHU result was mainly down to some awful defending. The Villa v West Ham game is one of the main draws of FH29 for me as I don't want any of them in my main squad in the lead up.

I definitely want Solanke for 27-8. Doing the hokey cokey as I'm on a different chip plan but I don't mind holding for the Newcastle fixture in your case; expect he can get something there. Not sure he'd be in my top 3 beyond those fixtures though; might jump ship to Toney/Hojlund.

I'm probably getting Toney this week but mainly because I have a Cunha problem - if he's out in 26 I'd need a hit to field 11 so might as well take that for Toney now I guess. WHU game in 26 obviously looks tasty.

                • 7 Years
                1 year, 10 months ago

I sold Watkins so I could afford Jota/Watkins. Seem a bit fortunate as a non owner when looking at the stats from the game yesterday 3 SOT, 2 BC missed and 0.74xG. Overall ticking over with returns. Certainly will be reversing the Darwin transfer in 26.

Solanke could be a hold with a decent run of fixtures between 27-32.

If I don't get Toney this GW, I can't see myself going there until BGW29.

Agree about bringing a transfer/hit forward to give yourself a chance for it to pay off. Done the same for Jota/Darwin (-4) this GW against Burnley before double.

Exactly the same question i have only if Trent is ruled out.

Reguilon, Gabriel (as i only have Raya) , or a Man City defender (which i think isnt worth the guess work).

I sold KDB for Alaverez and Haaland this week as part of a -8,and got Jota in).

I am getting Toney in for Darwin through 26. Shrewd move IMO.

I expect Luton to play, but there could be one more shock. Possibly the Wolves V Bournemouth fixture most likely (i can see Brighton and Leicester winning), but at present can get to 9 players (without GK) in GW29 which is fine)

                    Raya (Turner)
                    TAA, Moreno, Estu Doughty (Gusto)
                    Jota, Saka, Foden, (Palmer, Eze)
                    Darwin, Haaland, Watkins

I think i may go Reguilon, but Gabriel is more tempting over the next 3 am I missing good points because of 2 extra poor fixtures?

Thoughts on these moves for a -4 please?

Trent and Palmer out for VVD and Jota

Have exact funds and could be priced out tonight if Jota rises. Trent a risk but could be injured or get reduced mins anyway.

Plan was the roll the transfer this week however think my ML rival might play his TC on Jota, so maybe I should look to get him in? I'm about 75 points in front, current team:

    Dubravka
    Porro / TAA / Estupinan
    Saka / KDB / Richarlison / Lewis-Potter
    Haaland / Watkins / Darwin

Areola / Palmer / Van Hecke / Tosin

    B) Taa & Palmer > Ake & Jota - 4
    C) TAA & Palmer > Bradley & Foden -4

Wait for early game news? Since they early kick off, surely there is leaked lineup

I'm holding until we hear more news. Even if he isn't fit for Brentford then the chance of him playing Luton is a reason to hold imo

      Thinking of selling for Ake.

      Gives me another BGW26 player.

Cheers. Might leave me a little short for dgw25, but also think save is best unless trent ruled out

I am saving if trent is fit.

If he is out, then it is Reguilon or Gabriel (as i dont have him and fixtures to GW27 so is much better (I covered Raya on WC stupidly). Could an an Arneal defender get more points in 3 games plus Reguilons next 4 +4 points) ???

What was the news on Zinchenko?

Calf injury, not sure on availability. Kiwior done well against WHU with White inverting and Tomiyasu is available. Not ideal for Zinchenko xMins

Do we believe Gomez is nailed for 2 dgw25 games assuming he's recovered, and will you bring him in for a hit?

Depends on Trent injury and Bradley availability from compassionate leave

Anyone thinking of a Brentford mid for the DGW? Jensen perhaps?

    1. Conners

I don't like their fixtures enough to risk getting a mid. Toney or nothing imho.

Would rather have Garnacho if you need a cheapie

I brought in lewis-potter this week as my cheap bench fodder going forward. expect nothing from the double, but you never know

Undecided on whether or not to TC Haaland here or play a bench boost. Current team below (*Would bench if TC). Any thoughts?

    Areola*, Dubravka
    Gabriel*, Trent, Doughty, Estu*, Walker
Gordon, Foden, Jota, Gross, Palmer* (Would become Garnacho or Hwang on BB)
    Toney, Haaland, Watkins

If news on Trent is inconclusive and/or Walker plays 90 mins in CL, I wouldn't feel confident using BB.

I also don't fancy Doughty to get more than 2 or 3 pts regardless of the double.

No, but I considered it. If you picked all the right doublers the upside could be massive. Just that 29 looks awful to navigate without FH unless you’re keener on the players with fixtures than most of us are

  25. I Member

    Dubravka
    Virgil, Saliba, Gabriel
    Saka, Foden, Richarlison, Gross
    Haaland, Watkins, Darwin

    Areola; Palmer, Pedro Porro, Taylor.

    1 FT 3.1 ITB

Is this just a save? I can afford Palmer to Jota but that jus leaves me with a terrible benching headache in 25 (Richarlison, Gross and Watkins all with good fixtures) and forces a hit in 26. Doesn't seem worth it to me although not owning Jota is frightening.

I am in a similar boat actually. Only got 4 DGW players but dont want to screw myself the following week with Liverpool not playing. I looked at Palmer to Jota bu benching headache

Keep Solanke and save a transfer for 28.

TAA to MCI (Ruben Dias), Palmer to Son or L. Diaz if you want more doublers

To get to the top of my mini league (and coincidentally to win my cup matchup), I need Gusto to hit 9 points, or not play at all. Will it happen? doubt it.

It could, Palace are missing their most influential attackers plus Guehi. Could easily be a clean and an assist, there's hope!
