With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 2024/25 nearing, we’re welcoming back our team of Hall of Famers and guest writers. Here, two-time Indian FPL champion and Manchester United fan Lateriser discusses Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.

FPL 2024/25 first draft team reveals: Haaland, Salah or both? 2

So my club Manchester United have been a bit Jekyll and Hyde under Erik ten Hag and their options have almost been alternating between being good and not so good. In this article, I will be talking about our prospects in attack, mainly focusing on whether Marcus Rashford (£7.0m) and Bruno Fernandes (£8.5m) will be options to consider in FPL this season.

Let us first look at United’s underlying numbers in the last two seasons. In all the images used below, we will have the 2022/23 data on the left and the 2023/24 data on the right.

While we scored the same amount of goals as we did in the first season under ten Hag, the expected goals (xG) data actually reduced drastically which was visible in a very underwhelming season. We were 10th for goals and xG in 2023/24. The season before that (ten Hag’s first) wasn’t that bad as we were 6th for xG and 8th for goals. We did have a huge chunk of injuries last year, however, and Casemiro (£5.0m) pretty much lost his legs (was unfit) which affected our play. I think it is crucial that we find a new midfield partner for Kobbie Mainoo (£5.5m) this season otherwise I’d be wary of investing in our defence.

    I think 3-4-3 is the way to go now with Solanke's move. Not too enamoured with Muniz etc. (can quickly change), but the 7.5s of Mateta/Solanke etc. look a an excellent pool/bracket to easily tap into

    Currently my only Arsenal player is Raya. Starting to think about switching to Pope (most nailed at back for Toon as things stand) which will allow me to upgrade Porro to Gabriel/Saliba.

    Two questions:

    1. Should I make the change?
    2. Who to choose between Gabriel/Saliba?

        For the purpose of? I think fully rotating back 5 is the way to go what with the rolling transfers.

        Pretty sure you'd never want to play a 4m defender unless someone like Barco becomes first choice.

      I'm going 1. I think Odegaard only gets better this season again and Muniz has the early fixtures.

      I'm not sold on it just yet though, Fulham aren't that reliable and Muniz was hot and cold last season so a 6.5 + Havertz could be the go.

          You answered too fast for me 😉 But do take a look at Porro and Robinson rotation. Munoz and Maatsen cost equal money also, but Porro+Robinson is more sexy with those fixtures. I also prefer 5.5 + 4.5 over 2x 5.0.

    So... who is the best 4.5 keeper? Currently on Flekken, but it's a bit meh. Miguel's fixtures are better, but is he nailed? Areola's got tougher fixtures. Don't know who'll play for Palace and I actually prefer Muñoz (or Andersen for that matter)

      I think Flekken / Valdimarsson at 8.5 is the best you can get now. Alisson, Raya and Pope are mainly for teams without Haaland and Salah. Pope at 5.0 might might be worth the money though.

      For uncertain 4.5 you need certain 4.5 to cover. So it's either 8.5 or 9.0. If you decide to pay 9.0, you just pick best nailed 5.0 imo.

      Miguel doesn't appear to be first choice. I like Areola, but fixtures aren't the best as you say. Henderson is the other enticing option, however there are question marks there too. Flekken could do well, but you'd be taking a bit of a leap of faith, as he was absolutely torrid last season

        The point here is that first time "ever" we don't have decent gk punt. However, if semi early WC is in plans, we can choose. Come gw6 and we may have a clue. Before that no SH teams may afford to get likes of Pope and Raya. Raya being cheaper than likes of Saliba has gone unnoticed imo.

          I agree. I'm on Pickford atm and can't remember having ever spent more than 8.5 on goalkeepers to begin the season. I still expect myself to downgrade before GW1 but haven't been able to settle on anyone yet. I think most people acknowledge Raya as an option, however it's a lot to spend on a goalie when funds are scarce
