How to play UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy 2024/25

The UEFA Champions League (UCL) may be getting a divisive revamp this season but the official Fantasy game is the same old format we know and love.

And it’s now live for the 2024/25 season!

You can dive in right now to start your team tinkering, as unlimited transfers are allowed before play starts.

SIGN UP TO PLAY UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FANTASY HERE

There will be as-yet-unannounced prizes on offer in this free-to-play Fantasy game. In the past, these have ranged from UEFA Champions League final tickets to Playstation 5s and replica shirts.

We’ll be bringing you a lot more content on this game throughout the season, with regular articles ahead of each Matchday.

There is also lots more UCL Fantasy content over on our sister website, Fantasy Football Community.

In this introductory piece, we’ll talk you through the basics of the game.

BRIEF RULES

To quickly summarise the game: UCL Fantasy managers get €100m to spend on a squad of 15 players. They earn points based on how they perform in the Champions League.

Anyone who has played Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will have no trouble picking the game up, as many of the rules are exactly the same or very similar:

  • An initial budget of €100m (which rises to €105m from the round of 16)
  • Pick a squad of 15 players – two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders, three forwards
  • Select a starting XI in a valid formation for every Matchday
  • Select a captain who earns double points
  • Make free transfers between matchdays

Those are the fundamentals but there are one or two quirks of the game that require a bit of explaining, which we will cover below.

DIFFERENCES TO FPL

NUMBER OF PLAYERS PER CLUB

Initially, the maximum number of players you can own per club is the same as FPL: three. However, this increases as the tournament progresses:

StageMax. players per club
League phase3
Knockout round play-offs4
Round of 164
Quarter-finals5
Semi-finals6
Final8
MANUAL SUBSTITUTIONS

Firstly, as well as autosubs that replace non-playing names of your starting XI, UCL Fantasy also allows manual substitutions within a Matchday.

Between the end of one night (eg Tuesday) and the start of another (eg Wednesday) within that Matchday, a maximum of four players can be switched for ones on your bench who have yet to play.

For example, if Ollie Watkins (€7.5m) disappoints on the Tuesday of Matchday 1, you can replace him with a substitute who’ll play on Wednesday or Thursday.

The only instance in which you can’t sub a player off is if he’s received a red card.

CAPTAINCY SWITCHING

Similarly, a poor choice of captain can easily be corrected by changing it to someone from the second (or third!) night. This new captain will be the only one whose points get doubled.

TRANSFERS AND CHIPS

Unlike in FPL, each Matchday deadline goes right up until the first kick-off of night one. It allows managers to wait until team news before using their free transfers.

During the group stage, each manager gets two of them, plus a maximum of one that’s rolled over from before. However, additional ones cost four points.

MatchdayNumber of free transfers
Before league phaseUnlimited
During league phase2 per matchday
Before knockout round play-offsUnlimited

Before round of 16Unlimited
Before round of 16 second leg3
Before quarter-finals5
Before quarter-finals second leg3
Before semi-finals5
Before semi-finals second leg3
Before final5
CHIPS

Furthermore, there is a pair of chips that can be used once:

  • Wildcard: This is just like in FPL – a chance to change the whole squad for free.
  • Limitless: Like the Free Hit chip but with an unlimited budget.

SCORING SYSTEM

Instead of bonus points, UCL Fantasy awards three to ‘Player of the Match’.

As well as the standard points for goals, assists, clean sheets, cards and appearances, there is an extra one given to goals from outside the box and whenever a player makes three ball recoveries:

    Should I do this?

    Porro
    Jota
    Gordan
    Isak

    To

    Robertson
    Salah
    Onana
    Joao Pedro

Don't sell Porro or Jota. Onana not a buy. Find another way to get Salah

Why not porro? I already have Diaz.. I assume Salah is a must, right? I would have to WC to get him in though.

Porro is basically playing like 5.5 attacking mid with chance of CS. You can sell Gordon and Isak. I sold Saka and Isak -4 to get Salah

Porro consistently has the most attack involvements among an attacking team.
I would only go Diaz to Salah if you can do it without a hit or wildcard until the former cools off but that's more subjective.

Do it. Pool fixtures are great worth it to get Salah Robbo over Jota (rotation risk) Porro

I have had some time to assess the content I have taken in over the last couple of seasons. Many on here do not listen to podcasts or read content from other sources. I would be interested to hear your views on my post. I have tried to avoid criticizing content creators, but sometimes I need to listen about what I may be considered to be unfair in my opinions.

I listen to a lot of content; mostly because it puts me to sleep at night. Saying this, I must give a shout out to those who have impressed.
Above Average FPL: The newest content I have listened to. They have worthwhile views IMO and they can entertain with their wit and general good-natured banter. They do not overload content with Spurs bias. They are not always right but advice seems to be both constant and informed. Well done!

FF Scout content: There are so many good articles to take in. Far from perfect in many cases but informative. Skonto Riga is especially good, offering up to date information with team news. The new lad seems good too. My only reason for cancelling my membership was the betting ads. Hopefully, they move away completely, as much as it must be financially rewarding; it is such a damaging addiction.

Harry: Probably the most skilful FPL manager on Pods today. I enjoy the time limit he puts on broadcasts and does not waste listeners’ time. I am sure he appeals to a wide age range.

FML FPL: I have buried my old-fashioned aversion to Americans’ limitations in understanding “soccer”. Good value listening with no pretention of skill levels. One of the first I choose to take in the weekly podcast when I put my head on a pillow.

Planet FPL: One cannot help to notice, the slow growth in subscribers. My opinion for this reason is Suj spends too little time on the platform and James does tend to be a bit of a Mark Goldbridge when replying to questions. His knowledge is good but his manners are awful. Maybe I am wrong and I am willing to listen to another side.

Raptor: A bit long winded but was someone I initially took to. I chose him to listen to his deadline stream. I soon stopped because of the end of show banter his audience offered about his appearance and his boring talk about his PHD in psychology. I would listen to more of him if he stayed on FPL content.

FPL Focal: Maybe suited to a younger age group but he is comparable to Harry in condensed content and skill levels. Pleased for him for reaching his 200k subscriber target. James could take a leaf out of his book.

FF Hub: I don’t enjoy the podcasts and they indicate money grabbing a bit too much. I will say the site can be helpful but AI is pushed a little too much and takes the personalization away. Maybe showing my age but I am not a fan of AI; although I know it won’t go away.

FPL Wire: a pretty good podcast. I have always thought Pras has been excellent in logic and expertise. Lateriser is an old hand and goes with gut which I also appreciate. The ads are getting a bit laborious though.

FPL Mate: Seems to steal others’ ideas. A copycat I find hard to take value from.

Gianni: Should avoid solo pods. He is better when talking with someone. Not all bad though.

Black Box: My favorite podcast. Mark is the GOAT and Az helps with the entertainment. If I could only watch one podcast it would be this one.

Let’s Talk FPL: Seems to be the main man in FPL. He is good at what he does and I remember him from Scout days.

A pointer to everyone. Try and avoid taking on and passing down information. Guys, try and be a bit more original.
In conclusion, I am clearly using this site to post so it is clear I more than appreciate FF Scout value. It is the first site I ever used and I am in my 10th year. Thank you all for letting me express opinions and learn so much though group chat.

fplblackbox is my favourite by a mile too

I agree, there's too much ad based content, letstalkfpl is clickbait too. It's not fun when everyone is just doing it for money, going behind pay walls.

Leif davis will be a bandwagon at some point this season, so I'm getting him on my wildcard now. No content creators have said that. He will be better than robinson in the end in my opinion, depends if fulham tighten up

Blackbox and Wire is all I need.

The solo guys don't really provide much for me. I appreciate discussion and the Wire especially has 3 different profiles of very good managers who have different contrasting views.

That's because Lateriser has stopped following his own advice. They had some nice discussion at the start of the season and LR in fact helped convince me to go Havertz over Solanke.

Planet fpl - they’re shite at the game but good at analysing football.

Only listen to The FPL Wire. maybe will add in BlackBox once a twice a season to hear what Mark has to say. I used to listen to more but I try to limit the time I spend with FPL/content and tbh it's self-defeating at a point, as people just start to spout nonsense to keep up the output of content. It's too much noise and frankly I think it's bordering on mental illness to consume 8/9 podcast a week tbh. Also frankly I feel I know a lot more about football than most of those listed above. I definitely get to more games and I know I finished above most of them on a regular basis.

Yes, "content" is aimed at noobs because that's where the volumes and the money is. Absolutely no need to listen to any of them if you are a competent and engaged manager, unless you want to listen to them for "entertainment", which is a big "each to their own".

You're last sentence makes sense, about knowing more about football. Not in an ego way.
If I'm being honest, I only watch them for entertainment, I'm not actually watching intending to learn anything new or follow any of their transfer tips, because they are generally so basic.
"Buy Diaz" and "Buy Trent" and "Nkunku is a game breaker"
Or maybe I do subconsciously? Who knows.

My fave is FML FPL. Great chemistry and occasionally hilarious.

I watch Wire a few times a year when I'm looking at WC or seeing what the template DGW/blank strategy is. I like that they explain their reasoning or lack of it, so you can decide whether you agree or disagree.

Some of the others say stuff like "the models say" which is an instant turn off for me. I watched a bit of BlackBox before the season started, but felt that Mark was sucking any enjoyment out of FPL or football. Each their own I suppose.

I hear you but I think Mark became disillusioned for a while due to the hate on Twitter. If you can't take the heat; get out of the fire I think. He has recently taken a more casual approach and back to the way he once was i think.

Player and team not where I thought they'd be at. Not great away team. Look worse than last season. Held last week for tap in goal because Spurs away at SJP is good fixture. Regret only getting to start due to and going without Salah as him and plethora of viable 6m odd strikers would've been better than Saka and Isak. I've corrected that with -4

You will need Arsenal assets from 6GW so, in theory, you may load up Liverpool assets right now then gradually trade them for Arsenal players.
Minteh minutes may be eated by Rutter so I would go Semenyo

Yes agreed. Don’t want to go completely without Arsenal though as it’ll be hard to get 2-3 players straight away in GW6. So I have to choose between trading either Gabriel for Robbo or Havertz for Diaz. Leaning towards the defender rn.

Don’t think he’s worth 12.6 if I’m not going to captain him. I’d go with him if no Haaland. One or the other for me. Once Foden is back and fully ready I can see myself going Salah and Foden with no Haaland. Until then it’s C Haaland.

GW5 Salah is the best captain by far that’s the only reason I’m getting and not owning him means if he hauls that’s like a 25-30 point deficit because of captaincy.

Not sure about the hit. Saka scores in the last 2 NLDs.

Also Darwin suspended for Uruguay so will stay at the club and train over IB. Casts some uncertainty on Jota starting in GW4 imo

Based on previous NLDs, goals from both sides are expected so unlikely a CS.

Rice suspended for the NLD reduces the appeal for Gabriel goal from corners.

Reasons above might be enough to bench Gabriel for me.

Interesting that most if not all content creators regard Forest as an 'great' fixture for teams and advise bringing in Liverpool and Brighton forwards as a priority. This, when the Forest defence is second best statistically this season.
This is not just because of fixtures as, with a worse defence last year, they were in the top 10 defences.
Why are they saying a great fixture?
    Am I missing something?
