Haaland Johnson to Isak Palmer for free? Would you add Rogers or Semenyo to Bruno for -4?

If I were to sell Haaland, I'd like to use the funds immediately, so the - 4 makes sense.
On the other hand, I don't see the rush in selling Haaland if you already own Salah.

Rogers is cheaper, but Champions League has clearly taken its toll on Villa. The one you keep is probably a long term hold, so I wouldn't be looking at fixtures.

Sell Rogers. Villa's European fixtures will take their toll. Also Rogers has been very close to dropping in value for a while whilst ESR is on an upward curve (for now).

Decision time - stick with Haaland or go a different route. But also need to sort out TAA (potential injury and too much money) and Lewis.

    1ft 0.7itb
    Flekken
    TAA, Gabriel, Mykolenko (Milenkovic, Lewis)
    Palmer, Bruno, Mbeumo, Semenyo, Rogers
    Haaland, Raùl (Cunha)

    A) TAA -> Konate/Colwill/RAN and aim to swap Bruno or Mbeumo for Saka in gw14 for a Haaland/Palmer/Saka structure

    B) Haaland/Semenyo -> Isak/Salah for a hit, but stuck with TAA and Lewis as issues in defence that may require further hits

    C) TAA/Mbeumo -> Colwill or RAN / Saka (-4)

    1. Captain Mal
      • 1 Year

If Trent misses Soton, it has to be A. No need to take a hit for Saka, so C isn't an option for me.
If Trent is healthy, you can look at B, but you have to decide if you prefer Haaland or Salah. No one can help with that. It's your call, a matter of personal preference.

Everton under Sean Dyche and the xG nonsense
    67 games in the PL
    xG 102 => 69 goals scored

Gotta wonder, do the data nerds factor that in their models. Or they go with "it all evens out in the long term".

I think this is an interesting point to consider. What is the reason for this? Simply that Everton have worse finishers than average? Could there be other explanations, like Dyche creates chances for the wrong players? Or something in the xG model over values the types of chances Everton create? Just thoughts

Last GW 38,7% of the elite 1000 owned DCL. In GW10 57% owned DCL(see below). Before that I assume it was even higher owned.

I'm talking about xG modelling, not FPL Review, which I know nothing about, but which I assume predicts FPL points (using xG and other variables). Rest assured, any points projections out there are going to take over- and under-performance into account. If they take each individual player's xG and xG delta into account, they automatically take the team's xG into account because the team's numbers are built out of the individuals' numbers.

When projections expect a player like DCL to do well, it is despite his underperformance as an individual. If you add in the underperformance of the team separately, you'll be adding the same data again, as the individual events that comprise the player data are the same individual events that comprise the team data. It would be interesting to see how they handle this, i.e. is there's a way to account for team-level factors -- like having certain combinations of players on the pitch and what happens when a player changes team -- or do they work directly with the event data, which would make sense to me, but I would need that explained, because I'm not a statistician, and honestly, I don't think FPL projections go that deep. Anyone who knows how they work probably has to use their brain to constantly qualify why numbers are higher or lower than they should be,

T’was the year 1980 and a local department store was in need of skilful skateboarders to advertise football jerseys, shorts and socks. I was paid $20 (a King’s ransom!), received a large packet of twisties, and was allowed to keep the socks (AFL team North Melbourne, unfortunately the team I now support, they are execrable, women’s team good but). Got the day off school, was filmed skateboarding past the camera doing 360s and so forth. Alas mine childhood stardom failed to transform into an adult acting career and I had to fall back on Plan B, jousting and general chivalry!

It would be great to know whether xG does take into account the players ability. Do we have anyone who knows how it works?

It theory it should NOT factor in player ability/how clinical their finishing is. But here's an exampled: KDB whips a ball through the 6-yard box and haaland gets his foot about 7ft high to knock in in from less than a yard out. The chance gets recorded as a high xG value. But the exact same cross in wouldn't even be reached by most other players/human beings. So if shaun wright-phillips is the player in the same starting position he doesn't even go for the ball and the "chance" gets dismissed as very low xG or no XG at all.

Haalands athleticism and agility and clinical finishing make the XG of chances higher than for other players so his xG delta stats are effectively worsened.

Ability is not factored in - a penalty is considered roughly 0.7 xG regardless of whether it's you, me or Ronaldo taking it.

            2. Deulofail
              • 10 Years
              1 year, 4 months ago

You have to touch the ball for xG to be recorded for that touch

            3. Deulofail
              • 10 Years
              1 year, 4 months ago

if "Haaland gets his foot about 7ft high to knock in from less than a yard out", it doesn't go down as high an xG value as if he went with his head, but going with the foot would understandably be relatively high for the average striker, because xG assumes that the average striker has already got his foot up to 7ft high to knock it in from less than a yard out.

It's a measure of the quality of the chance, only in that it's the probability of scoring if the average player makes that shot. It doesn't include the probability that the player would or can take that shot. It seems a bit weird in your example, because it's a fairly extreme case of a player who can do things others can't do given his physical build and athleticism. (Further, the calculation of the xG would be less reliable because there are fewer historical data points of similar shots (with the same variables, whatever they are) to base the calculation of probability on).

Hypothetically (and maybe in actuality in some models?), they could factor in body position. Like, if someone is stretching for the ball, that reduces the xG. But that's just another variable that affects everybody. That Haaland is better at scoring on the stretch just means he's more likely to score from that shot, regardless of the xG. Thus player ability is not factored into the xG. Rather, xG represents the average-ability player given the same circumstances when touching the ball. However, coding for the variables that capture the totality of the circumstances is impossible, so they take what they deem the most important , predictive and feasible variables (I assume).

              1. Sharkytect
                • 11 Years
                1 year, 4 months ago

Ok the haaland example is extreme, but apply the logic for a player's pace. There is a spectrum of player's speeds in the premier league, meaning the same straightforward through ball can be deemed a "big chance" if the player is very fast and latches onto it, or is not deemed a chance at all (so zero XG) if the keeper gets to it first. Agreed?

Therefore, player ability must inherently be factored into XG models.

I take your point that a player's finishing ability once in the shooting position is not factored in. That makes sense.

Freeze the pitcher when the shot is taken. At that point, and that point only, xG models will consider all the variables in play, and based on historical records of other similar pictures, it will calculate the probability that the average player would score in that circumstance.

Yes, a model could hypothetically take in the speed at which the player is running. But again, the individual top speed (and ability, etc) of the player is irrelevant to the xG of the shot when it is taken. In this hypothetical xG model, it would look at the historical records of players scoring when running at that speed (and the interaction of that pace with other variables, like distance to the keeper and the goal, etc) to calculate the probability of the average player scoring while running at that speed in those circumstances. If someone is too slow to get on the end of a chance, they do not shoot, and so there is no xG generated.

Maybe re-read the big I wrote about "quality of the chance". xG only represents a "chance" if a shot is produced. Maybe don't think of it as a measure of a "chance" (big or small) at all. It is a measure of the quality of a shot opportunity, but not the quality of the shot, nor the quality of the player, nor the quality of a chance in general --only of the probability that that shot would be scored by the average player

DCL's finishing has to be a significant part of it. His xG delta:
22/3: -3.64 (=6th of all outfield players, from limited mins)
        23/4: -5.93 (=1st)
        24/5: -1.72 (=4th)

City's defence is terrible right know.
If you like his attacking potential, I'd save 1.5m and go for Ait Nouri, who actually has more attacking returns this season.
If you need to have a premium, then I'd look at someone who plays for an elite defence, such as Gabriel or Konate.

Sporting press a lot. Expect lazy man utd pressing for the ball a lot with quick attacking play / an improvement on the transistion from defence to attack are the things I'm expecting.

    Best TAA replacement?

    My defence right now reads;
    TAA / Lewis / RAN / Faes / Greaves

    A) Gabriel
    B) Konate
    C) VVD

    Cheers.

C although I wouldn't invest in a premium defender as defenders & goalies are generally shite this season.

Fingers crosser! I went solanke >Isak now.. and still have Haaland and no salah!

Feels like im too late on salah, with the fix coming up. Gonna continue capping Haaland. Stupid or clever?

in the same position but 0.1 off solanke to Isak! i think i'll bite the bullet for a hit and get Salah in, its just wether i keep Haaland or not.
      a) Saka + Solanke - Salah + Joao Pedro (he is injury prone and the only striker in this price bracket but can be benched easily).
      b) Mbuemo + Haaland - Salah + Isak.

B is quite good as it allows for me to do Isak - Watkins week 14. Obviosuly we won't get any proper Saka news ahead of the deadline which means i'll probably stick with him. Gutted about taking a hit either way!

    Morning all,

I had planned to WC this week but now I am looking at my team, I don't think I need to, with 2 FT in the bank.

    Henderson(villa)
Ait Nouri / Robinson / Gabriel
    Salah / ESR / Mbeumo / Rogers / Foden
    Haaland / Cunha

Looking at Haaland & Foden to either:

    A: Isak & Bruno
    B: Isak & Palmer
    C: Isak & Saka

I think Palmer edges it at the moment in terms of the amount of action going through Palmer in games vs the spread of points in the arsenal side. I could move ESR up to Saka or Bruno next week also.

    What do you recon?

    1. Tonyawesome69

Looking at routes to get Palmer in now and can't decide which way to go. Basically between ditching Haaland or Saka.
    A) Saka and Jackson to Palmer and Cunha/Pedro
    B) Haaland and Rogers to Palmer and Isak/Cunha/Pedro

    I have Salah already.
I know arsenal fixtures look better but Arsenal haven't been great and I'd expect Haaland to outscore Saka long term.
Dropping Haaland does free up funds though and can make improvements else where.
