A variety of formations can be used in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and, in order to change it, managers can make a substitution within their 15-man squad.
These can also be made if someone simply has a ‘better’ fixture coming up.
What are the team formations?
A variety of different formations can be used, as long as it contains a goalkeeper, three defenders, two midfielders and one forward:
- 3-4-3
- 3-5-2
- 4-4-2
- 4-3-3
- 4-5-1
- 5-3-2
- 5-4-1
- 5-2-3
Usually, 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 are the most popular FPL formations, as they maximise the number of attacking talents.
You can have different ones each Gameweek but, like transfers, it must be finalised by each round’s deadline, occurring 90 minutes before the first fixture kicks off.
For example, if your team is set up in a 5-2-3 formation, you can change it to 4-3-3 by subbing in a midfielder for a defender. Just remember to click ‘Save My Team’ to finalise it.
How do I make an FPL substitution via desktop?
Firstly, go to the ‘Pick Team’ tab.
Select either player involved in the swap, click ‘Switch’ and choose the other individual. This can also be done by using the small arrow buttons beside them.

How do I make an FPL substitution via mobile app?
It’s similar on the app, where selecting a player brings up his profile and a ‘Substitute’ button.

You’re then able to choose the other individual.
Just remember to save and confirm these decisions.
Autosubs
Additionally, it’s important to rank your benched players in order of preference – again using the small arrows.
This will be the autosub sequence in which they’ll, when needed, come in and replace a non-appearing member of the starting 11.
Yet the minimum of three defenders and one forward still applies. Here’s an example.

If a starting defender in this 3-5-2 misses out due to injury, DEF(a) must replace him and not FOR. If DEF(a) also doesn’t play, it goes to DEF(b) and then nobody.
