In each Gameweek of Fantasy Premier League (FPL), managers get to choose a captain whose points get doubled. It’s one of the most important decisions to be made before each deadline.

For example, if Mohamed Salah gets 12 points in a match, those who’ve placed their armband on him get 24 instead.

Often the difference between having a good or bad FPL week, consistently good selections usually end up deciding mini-leagues and cups.

How do I choose my FPL captain and vice-captain?

On the ‘Pick Team’ page, select the player you would next like to score double points.

A pop-up will appear with the options ‘Switch’, ‘Make Captain’, ‘Make Vice Captain’ and ‘View Information’ (on desktop), or a couple of boxes that can be ticked (on the mobile app).

What is an FPL captain and how do I choose one?

The appropriate option needs to be chosen and, to finalise this, press ‘Save Your Team’ (desktop) or ‘Confirm’ (app).

Vice-captains could prove vital

Meanwhile, if your captain doesn’t participate at all in that Gameweek, his vice steps in to grab the armband and score double points.

It should be the player you consider to be the second-most likely to succeed in such fixtures.

Sometimes overlooked, there’ll be occasions when a premium player unexpectedly misses out because of injury, illness or match postponement.

That happened in Gameweek 15 of 2024/25, when the Merseyside derby was called off due to bad weather. Mohamed Salah didn’t play but, the next day, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer bagged two goals and an assist versus Tottenham Hotspur.

A particularly frustrating situation is when your captain is restricted to a real-life substitute appearance. Despite not starting, the points from his brief cameo will still be multiplied by two.

What if neither my captain nor vice-captain take part?

Even more unlucky is if both your captain and vice-captain miss out.

Autosubs can replace them in the FPL starting 11, but neither will bring double points.

It’s a rare situation, though. Try to pick them from different teams.
