Once signed up to the free and fun Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, managers need to know how to pick both a 15-man squad and a starting 11.
You are given a budget of £100 million to buy a squad of 15 players. It must contain two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards.
How to pick an FPL team

Every player has a price, which ranges from around £4.0m to £14.5m, based on their perceived likelihood of scoring points. It’s done in a way that makes it difficult to own all of the best players, given that some have a premium tag.
Most managers pick a maximum of two £10.0m+ players, while many have a cheap (£4.0m/£4.5m) second goalkeeper and similarly priced fourth and fifth defenders.
Additionally, it’s only possible to pick a maximum of three players from each Premier League team. It means that, for example, you can’t build a squad full of Liverpool assets.
Managers have the option to press ‘Autopick’, which automatically selects a squad for you. It won’t be a particularly good one, but it can serve as a starting point from which to build your own.
From the completed squad, each Gameweek sees FPL managers choose a first 11 and select a captain, who scores double points.
A variety of different formations can be used, as long as it contains a goalkeeper, three defenders, two midfielders and one forward:
- 3-4-3
- 3-5-2
- 4-4-2
- 4-3-3
- 4-5-1
- 5-3-2
- 5-4-1
- 5-2-3
Managers must finalise their teams before each Gameweek deadline, occurring 90 minutes before the first fixture kicks off. Once passed, it’s not possible to make any changes for that round of matches.
Substitutes
However, ignore the bench at your peril. When one of the starting 11 doesn’t take part, a substitute comes in, based on the chosen bench order.
In comes the first player who allows those ‘per position’ rules to be satisfied. It is therefore advisable to put someone with the nicest-looking fixture as substitute number one, in preparation for such an ‘autosub’.
After the last Gameweek fixture has been completed, player points are added up and determine whether you rise or fall in global and mini-league rankings. Let’s check out how these points are gained.
