In a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek, each one of your players will score points, determining whether the squad rises or falls in the rankings.
Ways to score points in FPL
There are a number of ways that this can happen.
On a basic level, points are awarded for goals, assists, clean sheets and appearances. But a midfielder’s goal will earn five points, compared to a forward’s four and a defender’s six.
New to FPL 2025/26 are defensive contribution points. Defenders get +2 points for every 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBITs). Midfielders get +2 points for every 12 clearances, blocks, interceptions, recoveries and tackles (CBIRTs).
While attacking players rack up most of their points via goals and assists, defenders and goalkeepers collect clean sheets. Goalkeepers are also recognised for making saves and stopping penalties.
However, players can lose points too. Own goals, penalty misses, leaky defences, yellow cards and sendings off are punished.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| For playing up to 60 minutes | 1 |
| For playing 60 minutes or more (excluding stoppage time) | 2 |
| For each goal scored by a goalkeeper | 10 |
| For each goal scored by a defender | 6 |
| For each goal scored by a midfielder | 5 |
| For each goal scored by a forward | 4 |
| For each goal assist | 3 |
| For a clean sheet by a goalkeeper or defender | 4 |
| For a clean sheet by a midfielder | 1 |
| For every 3 shot saves by a goalkeeper | 1 |
| For accumulating 10 or more Clearances, Blocks, Interceptions (CBI) & Tackles (defenders) | 2 |
| For accumulating 12 or more Clearances, Blocks, Interceptions (CBI), Tackles & Recoveries (midfielders & forwards) | 2 |
| For each penalty save | 5 |
| For each penalty miss | -2 |
| Bonus points for the best players in a match | 1-3 |
| For every 2 goals conceded by a goalkeeper or defender | -1 |
| For each yellow card | -1 |
| For each red card | -3 |
| For each own goal | -2 |
Generally speaking, FPL managers should aim to pick midfielders and forwards who score goals or create them. Ideally both. Defensive contribution points are also now a factor but attacking returns are the bread and butter.
Defenders are a bit trickier this season.
Wing-backs or full-backs offer potential at both ends of the pitch but the new defensive contribution points level the playing field for centre-halves. Indeed, had we had those points in 2024/25, seven of the 10 top-scoring defenders would have been centre-backs – eight if you include Josko Gvardiol!
Important information about scoring points

CLEAN SHEETS
These are only awarded if a player features for at least 60 minutes without conceding (not including stoppage time). If they are substituted after these 60 minutes by their real-life manager, the clean sheet will remain, even if teammates go on to concede.
RED CARDS
If a defender or goalkeeper is sent off, they will continue to be penalised for goals conceded afterwards.
ASSISTS
There are new assist rules in 2025/26, designed to make it much easier to understand. There’ll be more assists in the upcoming campaign, too!
THE FINAL DECISION ON POINTS
Points immediately awarded are subject to change. Amendments can be made no later than one hour after the Gameweek’s final match is over.
