We return to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price list analysis with a rundown of the best £4.5m defenders.

In our position-by-position guides, we will examine the key players competing for a spot in managers’ opening squads.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is currently the most popular £4.5m defender in Fantasy, with an ownership of 32.3%.

The West Ham United wing-back had an impressive debut season in east London, starting 35 out of the Hammers’ 38 Premier League matches.

He made notable strides offensively, delivering five assists in 17 appearances under Graham Potter, the most of any FPL defender from his appointment onwards.

He also topped his team in tackles (70) and interceptions (66), and hypothetically, would have contributed 12 defensive contribution points in 2024/25.

Above: West Ham defenders sorted by total defensive contributions (Tot) in 2024/25

That combination of attacking threat and defensive ability suggests Wan-Bissaka could emerge as one of the very best budget defenders this season.

West Ham managed only three clean sheets in 18 matches under Potter, but their fixtures in the first six Gameweeks – including Sunderland (a), Crystal Palace (h) and Everton (a) – are rated as the fourth-best from a defensive perspective on our Season Ticker.

Joachim Andersen

Fulham only managed to secure five clean sheets in 2024/25, the fewest among all teams that were not relegated. However, if they can bank a few more next season, Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) will likely provide value.

The underlying statistics indicate potential for improvement, as the Cottagers ranked sixth for expected goals conceded (xGC) and joint-third for big chances conceded last term.

As for Andersen, he would have racked up 26 defensive contribution points in 2024/25, the 12th-most of any FPL defender.

The Dane, although he didn’t score, was also a threat from set plays, racking up 14 headed goal attempts from such situations – only six FPL defenders had more.

Fulham’s initial run of fixtures may not look that good at first glance, but their opening run of home matches looks favourable: Manchester United, Leeds United and Brentford all visit Craven Cottage in the first five Gameweeks.

Ezri Konsa

Ezri Konsa may not be the most exciting selection, yet he provides a nailed-on route into Aston Villa’s defence, a backline that showed considerable improvement towards the end of the 2024/25 season.

Unai Emery’s team achieved six clean sheets across their final 10 matches, with their xGC visibly dropping:

Above: Aston Villa’s rolling six-match xG against average in 2024/25

The fixtures are very decent, too, with Villa ranked second on our Season Ticker from a defensive perspective in Gameweeks 1 to 7.

It is true that Konsa does not offer much attacking upside, considering he only averaged a shot every 266.7 minutes last season.

Points from defensive contributions may also be hard to come by due to his style of play; however, the initial fixtures – including Sunderland (a), Fulham (h) and Burnley (h) – indicate that Konsa might still be able to provide value.

Micky van de Ven

Micky van de Ven delivered just 32 FPL points in the 2024/25 season. However, it is important to note that he was restricted to just 12 starts due to injury.

A significant factor in his appeal this season is the appointment of Thomas Frank as Tottenham Hotspur’s new head coach.

The Danish tactician, who prioritises defensive organisation, is expected to enhance Spurs’ clean sheet potential. His creative approach to set-pieces may also yield additional benefits at the other end of the pitch.

With a favourable set of opening fixtures, including Burnley (h) in Gameweek 1, van de Ven has the potential to start well.

Another £4.5m defender at Tottenham, Destiny Udogie, is an early doubt for the start of the 2025/26 season due to a knee injury. This situation may provide an opportunity for Djed Spence to be considered, although additional information is first required on the severity of Udogie’s injury.

Marcos Senesi

The loss of Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.5m), Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez (£6.0m) will have plenty of Fantasy managers concerned about Bournemouth’s defence this season.

But in Djordje Petrovic (£4.5m), Illia Zabarnyi (£5.0m) and Marcos Senesi, head coach Andoni Iraola still looks to have plenty of quality at the back.

The underlying numbers were decent in 2024/25, too, as they ranked eighth for xGC:

Senesi, who was limited to only 17 appearances, averaged 9.41 defensive contributions per 90 last season.

He also has a keen eye for attacking, having registered four goals and five assists in the 2023/24 season.

Bournemouth open their campaign with a daunting trip to champions Liverpool.

However, beyond that, there are several favourable fixtures right through until the end of October.

Sepp van den Berg/Michael Kayode

There are some decent £4.5m routes into Brentford’s defence in 2025/26.

Sepp van den Berg, who showed his versatility last season by playing at both centre-back and right-back, is one option.

He started 19 Premier League matches in his natural position at centre-half last term and would have delivered defensive contribution points in seven of those outings.

Michael Kayode, meanwhile, cemented his place at right-back for the final six matches of the campaign and played an influential role, registering an assist in the 4-3 win over Manchester United. His long throws are a key part of his game, something Keith Andrews will be eager to utilise.

Brentford have lost their manager, goalkeeper, captain and top-scorer this summer, but do have some reasonable opening fixtures to tap into, including Sunderland (a) in Gameweek 3.

Others

FPL Gameweek 21 round-up: Wednesday’s goals, assists, bonus points + stats 1

Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Brighton and Hove Albion find themselves at the wrong end of the Season Ticker in Gameweeks 1 to 6, but if used as part of a defensive rotation, Patrick Dorgu, Marc Guehi/Chris Richards and Maxim De Cuyper could still be useful picks.

Wing-back Dorgu was a regular threat down United’s flanks last season, racking up 10 shots and 12 key passes across 12 Premier League appearances.

Guehi and Richards, meanwhile, played their part in a solid-ish Palace backline. Guehi ranked 17th among all defenders for total defensive contributions last season, but Richards was ahead on a per 90 basis, leading by 9.03 to Guehi’s 7.94.

As for De Cuyper, he is one to monitor for Brighton – his total of 90 chances created was the second-highest among all players in the Belgian top-flight in 2024/25. He’ll be competing with Ferdi Kadioglu for a regular place in Fabian Hurzeler’s team, but could emerge as an option.

Finally, Emmanuel Agbadou is another name to watch. He would have claimed defensive contributions in seven of his 16 appearances last season, with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ fixtures particularly appealing in Gameweeks 5 to 9, as they face all three newly promoted teams during that period.

    Pick one:

    A. Wirtz and Anderson (in 3-5-2)

    B. Ndiaye and Bowen (in 3-4-3)

Rest of attack is: Salah, Palmer, Rogers, Watkins (or Gyok), Wood (+ 4.5m fwd/mid)

B for me. Comes down to having a small part of a big attack with Wirtz or 2 big parts of small attacks with Bowen and Ndiaye. Everton have some great fixtures too.

Wirtz will be class, but not sure if he’ll be FPL class. Bowen is proven and him and Ndiaye are both on pens. So you'd have Palmer, Salah, Wood, Bowen and Ndiaye on pens. If you go Gyok, he's likely also on pens based on recent chat.

We thinking Watkins goes to United or stays at Villa? Don't really want to start with him if the transfer speculation drags on.

Certainly balanced, but I think it's suicide to go without Salah and Haaland. Too many "what ifs", and too many games you'll be hiding behind the couch

Anderson over Reijnders, and you've got quite the zombie/few-transfers team set up

Or Bruno + Reijnders to Wood + Semenyo/Kluivert

Nice. But the gain without Salah is Isak and Bruno, with stronger first-choice defence? Would prefer to upgrade defence as get more funds. Like Bruno in principle but still want to see how he works with Cunha and Mbeumo. Sounds like he may lie deeper than in the friendlies. Thinking there isn't enough here overall to compensate for no Salah or Haaland. But will probably be eating my words come September.

Yeah, that's right. The changes from my 'OG team' are:

        Sels Cucu VVD Bruno Isak
        vs
        Kelleher Gusto Williams Salah Wood

I probably wouldn't risk not having Salah, but it's cool to see what you can get.

    Question only for the elite.

I currently have gyokeres, piroe and neco with 1.0 itb. That money will be used to do piroe to JSL if piroe’s punt doesnt work by gw3 (im benching him for the arsenal game gw2). But i will want to do gyokeres to watkins in gw3 but with 0 itb. Any price rise on watkins or fall in piroe will price me out. Should i risk it this way or use the 1.0 itb to do neco to milenkovic and keep 0.5 for the gyokeres-watkins move and keep faith that piroes output gonna be good till gw 9 and ignore JSL.

I disagree, the guy has scored in two consecutive seasons 35 goals excluding penalties. He is not like darwin nuñez that he did it only one time at the portugal league and liverpool fell into the trap. Plus i need a captain for gw2. Plus he’s got the magic stick.

The Portugese league is way off the standard he'll have to reach if he wants to keep scoring at the rate he has in the last 2 seasons. Plus pundits are just guessing at how Arteta will fit all the pieces together and if it all gels together. If you believe Gyokeres can hit the ground running and bang goals in at a high rate then go for it.
I and others prefer to see how things unfold before jumping on the train.

I think it puts you too much in a precarious postition from the start. Gyok, could be a beast. If he bangs in GW2, you really going to ship him? He's my captain for GW2 at the moment.

I would either start with Watkins or if you're desperate to have Gyok have both. That's what I've done. I wouldn't be planning transfers like you are without 0.5 ITB

      How about 5.0 5.0 4.5 4.0 4.0 at the same price?

Nailed DefCon/xGI lads you could play in most of the first 6 games: N.Williams, Colwill, Collins, Robinson, Mykolenko, Wan-B, Konsa, Senesi. Then reassess with saved FTs or an early WC

If Senesi, start a 4.0 lad over him in GW1. If Mykolenko, play the 4.0 in GW5

Brighton, Palace and Newcastle will need more rotation options. Spurs and Man U are wait-and-see

      That's how I see it

Yeah, I do feel you're missing out on the CS potential of clubs who have 5.0 minimum guys: Forest, Chelsea and Everton

DefCon is hard to predict, so you'll need those easy games to go well (CS, G, A) and the harder games to go badly. Tougher to call the rotation in early weeks, as even promoted teams might start well

Digne's got Maatsen (could be Konsa), Dorgu still has Onana behind him atm (maybe attacking returns with the new frontline?), Richards can come in for 4.4 with a GW4 FT instead of first 3 GWs on the bench. Palace can keep anybody out on their day, tbf. Not much against starting with Richards

Seen you've got Sanchez for the Chelsea CS

I'd rather go 4.5 in that spot and get three 5.0 defs, since save points accumulate in tough games while DefCon is capped at 2, so I'm less reluctant with perma-starting 4.5 GKs

Anderson's a ticker. You'll rarely get an attacking return, but he'll steadily accumulate those DefCon points. But that's providing you leave him in your starting line up against the Top teams; his 3 points from game against your Burnleys and Sunderlands will fail to excite.

Just because I saw it in an FPL Mate video, and took a screenshot. I think people are guessing/underestimating the games in which players get DC. FPL Mate's stats had a total figure of how DC points were split amongst the top 30 FPL DC candidates (a mix of teams and players), when playing the top 10 and bottom 10 teams. 47% of DC points were earned against top 10 teams, and 53% were earned v bottom 10 teams. It was quite crazy how randomly split it was, though a few observations:
              - Top defensive teams earned slightly more points against top 10 teams than bottom 10. SLIGHTLY. VVD 10 v top 10, 12 v bottom 10. Tark 26 v top 10, 18 v bottom 10. Murillo 20 v top 10, 18 v bottom 10.
              - Some players had quite interesting splits. Rice 4 v top 10, 14 v bottom 10. Baleba 8 v top 10, 22 v bottom 10. Bruno 14 v top 10, 8 v bottom 10.

Overall, the numbers were very even and not at all as clear cut as everyone is assuming. Now, to Anderson.

              Anderson DC v top 10 = 10 points
              Anderson DV v bottom 10 = 26 points.

8 total attacking returns last year. I think you will be surprised how playable he is...

You might need some 5.5 mids to be able to afford all those 5.5 defs...

But yes, I think whoever emerges will be able to outscore all but the topscoring defenders.

Possible candidates: McNeil, Thiago, Malen, Alcaraz, Damsgaard, Caicedo, Wilson, Arias, Zubimendi.

First team of the year would appreciate any advice…

    Kelleher (Petrovic)

Cucurella Konsa De Cuyper (AWB, Esteve)

Salah (C) Palmer Ndiaye Rogers (Ramsey)

    Watkins Solanke Bowen

Don't mind the safety of that front 3, but given the new DC points I would probably drop Bowen down to a 6.5 and spread the 1.5 in your defenders. Mids look great.

here's a dumb one. i won't stick with it, but i actually don't hate it? all-out CBs and premium MIDs

    Kelleher (Valdimarsson)
    VVD, Gabriel, Tarkowski, Murillo (Esteve)
    Salah, Palmer, Saka (4.5, 4.5)
    Wood, Welbeck, JSL

Nice article. Konsa is a lock for mine early on and so is Wan Bissaka. After that it gets a bit murky for 4.5s. Don't really trust any of the others.

Plenty of talent at 4.5 for some better performing options to emerge.

I currently have a 6.0, 2x 5.0 & 2x 4.5 That's more than I usually invest in my defence, but I think DCs can justify that higher spend. I'm thinking I'll play 4 of those 5 most gameweeks.

  11. Andy_Social

Good article, but in fact I'm planning to completely forego 4.5 defenders this time. Previously I've always started with between 2-4 4.5s, but the new rules have altered my strategy. I'm going to park 2x4m donkeys on my bench and permastart 3 5.5-6m premiums. Previously I'd have rotated out a Toffee or Tricky Tree defender for the big games, but now I'm minded to play them for the defcons.
    What do you think?

Still trying to wrap my head around this wild obsession with DC. You’d think it gave +10 points instead of just +2. People are literally bringing in midfielders who’ll score maybe 1 or 2 goals — if they’re lucky — and possibly grab an assist or two. As for forcing in premium defenders with horrible fixtures in the first five GWs… honestly, I’ve got no words. Virgil is elite and most nailed defender in game, so many would have him even if there are no DC.

I prefer to look at DEFCON's as a little sweetener. Don't be surprised if there's a lot of early wildcards! BBGW1 get it done!!

Nobody's saying they get 10 points. But an extra 40 points over a season for a player nailed in your Starting XI is not to be sniffed at.

But that's my point - the likes of VVD, Gvardiol and Tarks (my 3) are season-keepers. It allows you to focus transfers on attacking assets.

Agree with this idea - the more transfers used on Mid/Fwd, the more upside you can chase over shorter timeframes whilst your defenders tick away.

I haven't invested heavily in defence. 2x6m, a 5.5 and 2x4m benchies. Overall, not expensive.

It sounds good in principal but can you not see yourself switching VVD for a Frimpong/Kerkez if the fullbacks are looking OP, or switching VVD for Cucurella, Gabriel when the fixtures favour them more of they get an attacking return. Won’t be so easy to sit back and say I am locked in for the long haul to get my extra 40 DEFCON points.

Might happen - anything might happen. But I wouldn't kneejerk into a Frimpong on the basis of a hattie of assists if he's also likely to be rested in more games than Virg. I do have a semi-plan to switch one for Gabriel when Arsenal's fixtures turn, but still maintain a trio of nailed-on central defenders.

2 pts in every other game doesn't mean that you have to own them for a long period of time. Or what did you mean? Assist is only 3 pts, so there is an argument that difference between 3 A pts and 2 DC pts is only one point.

            1. Andy_Social

Murillo and Tarkowski would have gained the 2 point DC bonus in 50% of their fixtures. No attacking fullback got anything like as many assist/bap points. So whether you keep the DC monsters for 38 games or 10, proportionately, they're likely to haul more points than other defenders.

Thinking VVD/Wirtz cover Salah and Rice/Gyokeres cover Saka and can still have Haaland and Palmer so likely top 4 accounted for and bench rotations in Def.

    Sanchez
    AWB, VVD, Milenkovic
    Palmer, Wirtz, Anderson, Rice
    Haaland, Gyokeres, Wood

    4.0GK, Konsa, Esteve, 4.5mid, 4.5fwd

As much as I like AWB as a player, he still plays for West Ham. He is also over 30% owned. If he blanks in the first game, I can see mass sales starting quite soon, especially if any of 4.0 hauls (or 4.5 hauls).

Agree on AWB, thats why rotation with esteve/konsa works well (unless i find a better one) as esteve H v Sun in GW2 when AWB plays chelsea etc. Tbf I am still looking at the best combo of two 4.5 defs, right now on AWB and Konsa but may be a better one out there.
