It’s that time of the year when we trawl through the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price list – and now it’s the turn of the £4.0m defenders.

Before 2023/24, we were often scrabbling around for one or two £4.0m playing FPL defenders at best. A lot of the time, these budget gems – such as John Lundstram and Tino Livramento – only revealed themselves during pre-season.

But in the last two years, the games-makers made it much easier to find £4.0m options with strong chances of starts.

Most of them came from the three promoted clubs – and that’s exactly the case this time around.

Here, we take a look through all 79 (!) defenders currently listed at £4.0m and pick out the potential gems.

Click here if you want to bypass the research and jump straight to the summary…

£4.0M DEFENDERS: THE PROMOTED TEAMS

Over a third (28, to be exact) of those 79 defenders play for promoted Burnley, Leeds United or Sunderland.

2024/25 LEAGUE APPEARANCES FOR BURNLEY

PlayerStarts (sub apps)GoalsAssistsNotes
Maxime Esteve4610Ever-present starter at centre-half in 2024/25.
Lucas Pires32 (2)02Started the season as first-choice left-back before Humphreys (below) took over, although returned to the XI when his positional rival had his campaign ended prematurely.
Bashir Humphreys20 (5)12In and out the side at first but pretty much established himself as first-choice left-back in November. A thigh injury curtailed his season in February.
Joe Worrall3 (6)01Back-up at centre-half who started three games early in 2024/25 before a broken foot sidelined him. Was only a substitute after returning in December.
Oliver Sonne0 (2)00Back-up right-back signed in January who never made it into the starting XI once.
Shurandy Sambo 0 (1)00Even further down the pecking order at right-back despite only signing last summer.
Jordan Beyer0 (0)00Injured for the entirety of the campaign but back in training and has featured in pre-season.
Hannes Delcroix*0 (0)00Centre-half who was injured at the start of 2024/25 but who couldn’t break into the team even when fit. Was sent out on loan to Swansea.
Hjalmar Ekdal*0 (0)00Centre-half who was injured at the start of 2024/25 but who couldn’t break into the team even when fit. Was sent out on loan to Groningen.
Owen Dodgson*0 (0)00Left-back and academy product who never made it off the bench. Sent out on loan to Burton Albion.

*went out on loan

Dodgson, we’ve got Owen Dodgson (£4.0m) here! See? Nobody cares.

Of the dozen Burnley defenders available at £4.0m, 10 were on the books last year. Another two, Axel Tuanzebe (£4.0m) and Quilindschy Hartman (£4.0m), have joined this summer.

Maxime Esteve (£4.0m) is the stand-out, or the safest, candidate at the moment. An ever-present starter last season, he was part of a defence that kept a record 30 clean sheets.

While attacking returns may be in short supply, he was just outside the Championship top 10 for clearances (230) last season. Remember that outfielders get extra points in 2025/26 for clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBIT).

He and his centre-half partner, the now-departed CJ Egan-Riley, had near-identical CBIT rates last year: 7.7 and 7.8 per game. Those were the best in Scott Parker’s squad.

And he’ll surely have more of those to complete in the Premier League, too, with the Clarets coming under the cosh.

We’ll need to assess Burnley more in pre-season before touting the others. Will Beyer be straight back in the team after so long out? Will Parker switch to a back three, with Bashir Humphreys (£4.0m), Kyle Walker (£4.5m) Beyer and/or Tuanzebe as centre-halves around Esteve?

Hartman is one to keep an eye on: he has some assist potential from left-back/wing-back and was once coveted by Chelsea.

LEEDS UNITED

Until you try and write an FPL article yourself for the community section, you don't appreciate how good Neale's Spike Lee Joints are. It's that X factor when you are not thinking about what to write next but the sentences are flowing out of you and you're instinctively making a great point and explaining your thoughts exactly how you want to explain them.

    A cheap defense allows for a front-line that I like a lot.

    Sels
    Gvardiol | VVD | Gabriel
Calceido | Rice | Salah (permacap) | Kudus
    Watkins | Bowen | Isak

Subs - (Turner, Rodon, Esteve, A Ramsay)

Joe Rodon will get a tonne of defensive contributions points. Last season he averaged over 11 CBITs per 90 mins for both Leeds and Wales. Expect him to be a lot busier in the Prem.
Honestly wouldn't be surprised if Rodon qualified for the DefCon bonus points in every match he plays, which will likely be all 38 matches (started all 46 last season).

I first called for a dedicated £4.0m defender article a few years back. Until I intervened, it was just an afterthought in the £4.5 cheap defender round up. So glad it is a big highlight and an absolute staple of the scout's ultimate preseason guide now.

Although the pricing in general looks about right this year, I think the budget mids (£6m or less) are generally very poor and most should be 0.5m less.

For example, I can't see a single one at 6.0m that I'd want to play in a 343 or 352 versus playing Munoz or Milenkovic at 5.5m in a back four.

Anderson feels like the safe pick at 5.5m. I'd be comfortable with Baleba as a fifth midfielder at 5m. Can see myself going for Minteh, Hudson-Odoi or Adingra at some point and the latter has great fixtures to start with for Sunderland.

My Welsh bias is showing but I really hope I get to pick Harry Wilson, he's been so good for the national team and pops up with some nice goals for Fulham always but can't seem to nail down a starting spot.

he ended 23-24 well as well. Often after the Lord Mayor's Show when a cheapie forward has a follow-up season, but with their fix, as a talisman on pens he's a decent starting point I think

Wood, Wissa and Cunha sustained it more, but Welbeck, Jimenez, Strand all were excellent last season. If the bonus remains, it's often just getting a no.9 for most teams and one goal and they hoover all the bonus

Looks well set up for BB1. Is Malo Gusto nailed on? Not been following Chelsea news.

Does anyone knows if decuyper is nailed and ready to go from gw1? Or will he be introduced slowly?

What about Kadioglu, is he not back from injury now?

Kadioglu, Lamptey, Hinshelwood & Igor... they're not forced to played De Cuyper just because Estupiñan is leaving. I like what (little) I've seen of him but I'm not sure I trust that he'll be nailed from GW1 so I'll wait & see I think

you are absolutely right. they can play any of those. they did it last season and got good results in a lot of matches. what are your thoughts on van de van or udogie?nailed?

Pretty sure VDV is nailed. Spence did a decent job at LB last season so not as sure about Udogie but I'd guess he probably starts

the thing is decuyper might play out of position. like a winger. and mitoma more centrally with joao pedro now gone.

I would expect Mitoma continues in his best/natural position at LW unless they play a wing back system. Think it's Welbeck/Rutter central

Not a Brighton follower so can only speak on whispers but now that Estupinan has gone I think he's in line for the starting spot

Whos going to start in goal for bournemouth and spurs?

  22. REDANDWHITEWALKERS

    First draft team

    Vicario
    Frimpong, Gabriel, Cucarella
    Salah, Wirtz, Silva, Elanga, Kudas
    Wissa, Pedro

    Dubrvaka, Undogue, Konsa, Igor Jesus

Spurs have a decent start, Silva is Man City captain, everyone starts except Dubrvaka.

Should I drop in 2 £4M defenders and go for Raya or Sanchez?

    Thoughts and good luck!

Can't even opt out by clicking 'I don't want to save 47%', the most condescending corporate messaging from a site that sees its community as a spreadsheet of plebs they don't wish to associate with.
