We’ve seen some memorable budget forwards in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) over the years – but will anyone emerge from the pack in 2025/26?

Jamie Vardy delivered 17 attacking returns from a £5.0m start a decade ago. Harry Kane racked up 191 points in the same season, from the same price. A £5.5m-rated Raul Jimenez (£6.5m) hit double figures for both goals and assists in 2018/19.

Last season, we saw Jorgen Strand Larsen (£6.5m), Joao Pedro (£7.5m) and Liam Delap (£6.5m) all score 10+ goals. Each of them started at £5.5m.

In this article, we hope – or had hoped – to identify the possible £5.0m and £5.5m gems for 2025/26.

At first glance, however, there really doesn’t seem to be too many stand-out options. There are a lot of back-ups, while there are reservations about the strikers coming up from the Championship.

Here’s a lowdown on all 21 players currently priced at £5.0m and £5.5m…

Joel Piroe (£5.5m)/Lukas Nmecha (£5.0m)

Fantasy EFL Gameweek 17: Top Weekend Picks

The uncertainty at Leeds United sums up the indifference about the £5.0m-£5.5m crop.

Will it be Joel Piroe (£5.5m), summer recruit Lukas Nmecha (£5.0m) or another, as yet-unannounced singing leading the line come Gameweek 1?

It’s all up in the air at the moment. Piroe has hit the ground running in pre-season, scoring three goals in behind-closed-doors friendlies against the mighty Verl and Paderborn. One of them was a spot-kick, too.

Nmecha has responded with two goals of his own in the same kickabouts.

Both could still feature in the same XI: while Piroe and Nmecha have generally shared game-time at the tip of the attack in pre-season so far, Piroe featured as more of a ’10’ in the Verl game behind teenage central striker Harry Gray. There’s a glimmer of hope for Piroe’s minutes, then, even if another new forward arrives.

Piroe was the English second tier’s top goalscorer in 2024/25, although this was the first time in over 20 years of the Championship’s existence that someone achieved that feat with fewer than 20 goals. An ever-present starter in the league this calendar year, perhaps it’s his shirt to lose.

As for Nmecha, you can read more about the June signing here – but in a nutshell, injury has decimated the last few years of the once-promising striker’s career. He has seven caps for the Germany national team, indeed, but none since 2022. Can he stay fit in new surroundings?

To summarise, then, we likely won’t be able to make a confident call on the best Leeds forward until the transfer window closes after Gameweek 3. Until then, the remaining friendlies against Villarreal and AC Milan are worth paying close attention to.

Eliezer Mayenda (£5.5M)

I’ve had a look at Jake O’Brien CBIT per 90 and he has a lot of potential

    Tackles 1.49 (20th percentile)
    Interceptions 0.23 (1st percentile)
    Blocks 0.97 38 (38th percentile)
    Clearances 5.33 (99th percentile)

    = 8.02 CBIT

On the face of it that’s not great but he got a freakishly low number of interceptions last season especially for a tall guy with a long reach.

If he continues to play at fullback surely that’s an anomaly. An uptick in this as well as tackles and then he’s right up there with Neco Williams etc as the best fullback for CBIT. His clearances stats are amazing and that should continue to be in that Everton team.

Lacroix is the way if you want CBIT for 5m.

I agree but the point I’m trying to make is if you want Everton cover and don’t have the 0.5 for Tark/Branthwaite then he could still be viable

Obvs even more so it one is injured and Moyes decides to use him a CB instead of Michael Keane

Forgot about Keane. Keane was possibly way more favoured by Dyche, but that was largely when Branthwaite was injured (off the top of my head so will need to check). O'Brien at CB for CBs could be our first "in", but I woukdn't be surprised if Keane plays as there's no other RB

Ruling out the 'threemium' option, for reasons best explained on the last article, which of these to start with please (Palmer, Wirtz & Gyokeres are locked in for me as things stand):

    1 Salah & Welbeck
    2. Haaland & Kluivert

Currently leaning towards 2 FWIW. In particular, I think Bournemouth are being overlooked due to their GW1 trip to Anfield, which even then might not be a bad fixture for an attacker.

      1. Salah always starts well and is the standout captain pick for GW1. If he does well in the community shield then it's a no-brainer.

Thoughts one the below please? IM ITB, to upgrade bench or mid.

    Sanchez
    Murillo / Tark / Richards
    Salah / Palmer / Wirtz / Ndiaye / Reijinders
    Watkins / Evanilson

    Kinsky / Esteve / De Cuyper / 4.5

    RMT please

    Sanchez
    VVD Gabriel Neco Udogie
    Salah (c) Saka Palmer Ndiaye
    Wood Mayenda

    4.0, JSL, 4.5, 4.0

What do you reckon? JSL comes back in after playing City, Udogie on the bench. Saka (c) in GW2. Mayenda is a punt but Sunderland fixtures look alright to start.

    1. Mr. O'Connell
      • 14 Years
      1 year, 1 month ago

Sunderland still in for a centre forward, so watch this space on Mayenda.

If Saka loses pens, then I don't think he's worth the money with the fixtures.

      1. CYN
        • 8 Years

Ah fair enough, will keep an eye out.

Yeah Saka losing pens dents the appeal. I wouldn't hold him long but feel he's still the strongest Arsenal attacking asset for GW2 as Gyokeres settles in.

Until Salah does equally as good as Isak plus he has pens, extra point for a goal, clean sheet point and more likely to rack up bonus. You just can’t replace King Mo in FPL.

Ndiaye is a good pick, I can see him carrying on from last season, having pens is added bonus. Kudus is very talented on the ball and a maverick pick. Don’t see him being a consistent points earner FPL wise though.

    4.0 Eze Esteve Truffert/Senesi

Burnley let in 16 goals with an xGC of 38
Leeds let in 30 goals with an xGC of 30

Trafford was a huge part of letting of that insane difference of 22 expected goals not going in.

Funnily enough Meslier was generally awful, so 30 in 30 is decent for Leeds considering their keeper.

Saka for me. Was immense last season

Generally the heavy hitting mid, combined with a no.9 talisman is the combo to go for imo. The exception being a Watkins/Gyokeres/Isak figure with an Mbeumo, but I think having one cheap mid and one 9.0 forward is worth it, but goven the choice I'd go Saka. Rambly but hope that makes sense
