The end of an era: Son Heung-min (£8.5m) waved farewell to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday as the Lilywhites and Newcastle United drew 1-1.

There’s no time for too much sentiment as Gameweek 1 approaches, though – it’s all about the key takeaways for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

From a big injury blow for Spurs to a welcome return for the Magpies, here’s what we saw.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Johnson | Barnes
  • Assist: Danso | Gordon

MADDISON INJURY

James Maddison‘s (£7.0m) second appearance of the summer ended in more injury misery.

The midfielder was in trouble not 10 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute, being replaced himself shortly afterwards. Maddison had to be stretchered off, later being seen on crutches.

The bad news is that it’s the same knee that plagued him at the end of 2024/25.

“Yeah, it’s like in life, in football. I think sometimes life and football can be brutal, but also sometimes very beautiful. So I think it was brutal what happened to Madders. It looks like a bad injury. Of course, we don’t know exactly the status on it. It didn’t look good.

“We are pretty sure it was the same knee that he had the previous injury in.” – Thomas Frank on James Maddison

Where one door shuts, another one opens. Pape Matar Sarr (£5.0m) started this game in the hole, having bagged three goals in his previous two pre-season outings. Will he get a sustained run in that role now? You’d have to think that Spurs, given how close they were to nabbing Morgan Gibbs-White (£7.5m), would seriously consider moving for another ’10’ if Maddison is ruled out for a long period. But with Joao Palhinha signing on Sunday night, and Rodrigo Bentancur (£5.5m), Archie Gray (£5.0m) and Lucas Bergvall (£5.5m) already options deeper, perhaps Thomas Frank really does see Sarr’s future further forward.

The Senegalese midfielder registered a decent five touches in the box here, although his only effort came from a set play.

GORDON UP TOP

Both sides were without their main strikers on Sunday, with Alexander Isak‘s (£10.5m) future uncertain and Dominic Solanke (£7.5m) injured. Solanke may be back for the next friendly, which is a good job as Mathys Tel (£6.5m) and Richarlison (£6.5m) weren’t up to much up top. Tel missed an absolute sitter to make it 2-0.

As for Newcastle, Eddie Howe admitted after full-time that “there’s not much time” to get a new striker in – or any new players – ahead of Gameweek 1.

After Will Osula (£5.5m) fluffed his lines in midweek, Anthony Gordon (£7.5m) led the line against Spurs.

He did very well, too, linking up nicely with Harvey Barnes (£6.5m) and Jacob Murphy (£6.5m) on either side of him. Unless Newcastle really get a move on in the transfer market, that may well be the front three at Aston Villa.

Gordon set Barnes on his way for Newcastle’s (well taken) only goal, having come inches away from assisting Joelinton (£6.0m) earlier. Gordon himself went close with two predatory efforts, also seeing a goal chalked off for offside.

Newcastle really need a striker or two, but Gordon isn’t a bad Plan C.

“I thought Anthony did really up front, leading the line. Very pleased with him today.” – Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon

HALL RETURNS

After remaining unused against Team K League, Lewis Hall (£5.5m) made his first appearance of the summer. It was his first outing since February, indeed.

Hall was only on the field for the final 13 minutes, and judging by Howe’s post-match comments, it may be Kieran Trippier (£5.0m) and Tino Livramento (£5.0m) at full-back in Gameweek 1.

“Massive. I mean, what a player to get back into our ranks. He’ll need a bit of time to get back to his best and we’ll give him that time and try and support him. Today was just a taste for him. He’s worked really hard to get to this point.” – Eddie Howe on Lewis Hall

EVEN CONTEST

It was a fairly even contest in Seoul, with Newcastle maybe just edging it.

Perhaps the two teamsheets explained why. Other than Livramento for Matt Targett (£4.0m) and Sandro Tonali (£5.5m) for Lewis Miley (£4.5m), this might have been the Newcastle team for the opening weekend.

Frank, however, only gave 45 minutes apiece to several of his regulars, such as Pedro Porro (£5.5m), Micky van de Ven (£4.5m) and Cristian Romero (£5.0m). Mohammed Kudus (£6.5m) was also only on the bench.

Brennan Johnson (£7.0m), in Kudus’s right-wing role, issued a ‘don’t forget about me’ plea to his new manager, scoring the game’s opener.

Porro went close with a direct free-kick attempt, while Joelinton missed an easy header from a Bruno Guimaraes (£6.5m) cross. Bruno G was the game’s top creator, with four key passes.

Newcastle United XI: Pope (Gillespie 82), Trippier (Hall 77), Targett (Livramento 62), Schar (Krafth 82), Burn, Guimaraes, L. Miley, Joelinton (Hernes 87), J. Murphy (Park 77), Gordon (Osula 62), Barnes (Elanga 82).

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Kinsky, Porro (Spence 46), Danso, Romero (van de Ven 46), Davies (Vuskovic 80), Bentancur (Bergvall 46), Gray (Maddison 75 [Yang 86]), Sarr (Bissouma 62), Johnson (Odobert 75), Tel (Richarlison 62), Son (Kudus 65).

    Finish my team?

    Vicario, Kelleher
    Gvardiol, Virgil, Colwill, Diouf, Gudmundsson
    Salah, Palmer, Kudus, Reijnders
    J. Pedro, Fullkrug

14.5M ITB, need 1x mid, 1x fwd. Most likely BB GW1 (hence so much money in goal)

With that budget and that fixture? Kinda hard to ignore Bowen, and I agree that Fullkrug is easily the best value at his price point too. Intentional indeed but I see the risk in it for sure

The lack of FWD options for the start of the season is staggering. Lots of uncertainty across the board for the 6.5+ picks. Makes me more and more certain about Haaland as a good pick out of the gate.

Flirting with the idea of No Salah. Not because I don’t think he’s going to produce at the same level this season, but more about hedging that a more spread out spend across the midfield could work out better than a Salah-Haaland pairing team. And with Liverpool’s fixtures in GW2/3, there could be an advantage to be earned there.

With that in mind this is what I’ve cooked up:
    Sels (Valdimarsson)
    Gvardiol VDV Konsa Udogie (Esteve)
    Palmer Saka Wirtz Marmoush Rogers
    Haaland (Guiu, Kroupi)

Marmoush and Saka are pretty expensive gambles that haven’t necessarily made it into the template thus far, but I have a good feeling about both of them. Really trying to rely on potent offenses that’ll generate chances regardless of opposition. Additionally, clean sheet points for the midfielders (all of which have strong defenses) is another advantage for going big on midfield in my mind.

No one like Kun Aguero anymore? 1 striker have some risk. Haaland injured in warm up or have personal reasons, u have to play Kroupi Jr

Yeah honestly Marmoush is a bit of a hedge on that as well, but your point is salient. Hoping Guiu makes the move to Sunderland, but I’d likely transfer Haaland to Watkins/Gyokeres/Isak after a few weeks once their respective situations are figured out and work out bringing in Salah.

Best time to be on Haaland imho, before Europe, before defences are organised. But Salah does tend to start well too unfortunately for the bank balance.

Gonna have to watch Friday’s kickoff behind three sofas but I couldn’t agree more. With the uncertainty across the FWD line Haaland’s become that much more valuable right now. Much less scarcity across the midfield.

I’ve been trying to fit both but it does insane damage on the rest of the team. This team will be highly dependent on how well Saka and Marmoush pan out, but honestly I’m okay with going against the grain a bit to start the season 🙂

I'm a little but miffed at the number of teams with Palmer. Great player and all that, but without 2 goals in the cwc final, would he be in as many teams? 1 game doesn't change his poor returns since February.
    Or am I missing something?

    1. Sheffield Wednesday

I would only be miffed if I thought Palmer would be my differential pick. If you don't like Palmer then you should be happy seeing him in so many drafts.

Assuming WC would be played in 5 to 6 GWs I think I'm pretty set on this setup

    Kelleher (Vlad)
    Williams VDV Konsa AWB Esteve
    Salah Palmer Rogers Kudus Anderson
    Haaland Larsen (4.5)

With Neco Williams looking as a set and forget this year and with Dorgu, Guehi, Agbadlou, Anderson, De Cuyper, Senesi all at 4.5 I'm feeling pretty confident with that defense

Kudus is my only worry but again I'm happy with the options around that price point ie Ndiaye, Garnacho, Enzo, Rice, Man City, Sarr and even Malen so not too worried there either tbh

Larsen could be Welbeck and I'm hoping someone else like Barry or Thiago or newly promoted pops up there

Could always use Haaland /Salah as money bags for Gyokeres and Wirtz etc later

I don't mind it. Similar to my set up, I've gone cheaper on def to squeeze in Wirtz as well - still deciding if thats just being greedy.

Made a couple changes for more flexibility

Kudus to Malen (I like the 5.5 range with Reijnders, Adringa, Caicedo, Arias all providing options)
      Esteve to Mykolenko

Way I see it is I wouldn't play Esteve right until gw 8 or so(apart from GW 2). I now have 5 good defenders to rotate to cover a Malen fail and have Myko starting over Larsen GW 1.

I'd go A for the early weeks. Pools def looks leaky atm and I think Anderson will be nice a steady, when we are not sure on minutes etc for Wirtz.

But do you think there's a reasonable chance Onana gets replaced by a new signing? Or just vague rumourmongering?

There's a chance but I don't think it's very likely, unless these sales start happening quickly. We're all in on a striker (Sesko specifically) at the moment, and apparently our next priority is a midfielder, then a keeper. Hopefully Sesko's umm-ing and ahh-ing means that we reevaluate that priority, as I think we'd manage without a striker, but we're not going to make top half if we keep starting Ugarte.

If we do get a keeper, I think it's much more like to be someone like Lammens than Donnarumma, with him replacing Bayindir rather than Onana. But again, that could all change if the moves for Garnacho (Chelsea), Sancho (Juve / Dortmund) and Antony (Betis / Saudi) get done in the net couple of weeks.

I won't be having Haaland in my team and here's my reasons why. My opinion might just be based on basic arithmetic but very often we don't see the wood for the trees. He started out 23/24 at 14.0m after a 272 point season. Two years later he's starting out 25/26 at 14.0m after a 181 points season 😯 It's not as if last season was an outlier as his returns dropped off 20% in 23/24 as well. If he was assessed strictly on last season's returns he should be priced up at 10.0m in relation to Isak and 8.0m in relation to Wood. That's at least 4.0m down the lavvy pan unless he turns back the clock two years. Despite earning the most points in the league this calendar year I also don't think his team have turned a corner either as their defeat by Al-Hilal last month might indicate.

P.S. I don't think Salah at 14.5m is money particularly well spent either 😉

Salah going to AFCON mid December, could miss 6 games.

Allegedly his returns were better with Trent in the team.

If Isak signs there's quite a few attackers looking for slices of their FPL points and baps pie. Even without Isak there's competition.

Neither of them are worth 14.5m but Haaland for me looks the better pick, City's big dog. After last season he's probably a hungrier dog than Salah.

The price is based off ownership and points potential just as much as last season's points. If Haaland was priced as low as 10m, it'd be a 14-man game.

Hm, just looking at the first Arsenal lineup I'm not so sure. I'd say White over Timber and Havertz/Gyökeres is a 50/50.

    Cucurella, Van Dijk, Vdv

Could transfer Bowen> Larsen, Anderson> Rogers but not feeling it.

If Saka loses pens to Gyokeres I think that dents his value. Beto keep an eye on how favored he is in preseason.
Rest is fine. Saka + Beto -> Ndiaye + Gyok might be marginally better?

    A little different. Thoughts?

    Sels
    Cucurella Milenkovic Romero
    Palmer Saka Wirtz Rogers Minteh
    Watkins Wood

    4.0 Mateta Dorgu Esteve

Downgrading Rogers to Malen is entirely possible if I think Malen starts the season for Villa.

      Looks fine. 2 issues:
      1. Not sure about Romero. I would go LaCroix for defensive contributions and goal threat.
      2. Not sure about Minteh. I would go Anderson and save 0.5M.

Final draft. Thoughts? Big at the back and solid bench. Havnt spent much up top but all 3 could well prove good value in Fulkring/Thiago/Guiu

    Sanchez
Gabriel Saliba VVD Cucurella Ait Nouri
    Salah Wirtz Palmer Malen
    Fullkring

    Subs: Kinsky, Reijnders, Thiago, Guiu

Here is another differential option, refined a little after Kluivert's injury

    WC GW8

    Sels
    Tarkowski Gvardiol Milenkovic
    Palmer Rogers Ndaiye P.M.Sarr
    Haaland Watkins Fullkrug

    Hegyi Guehi Semenyo Konsa

I would play semenyo for fullkrug after gw1, rotatiing other players. I think it works quite well, the worst i have to face is one played out of :
    Tarky vs Liverpool
    Semenyo vs Newcastle
Fullkrug vs Palace (easy on paper but i only really have him for gw1 as i do not trust him)

Another option is to scrape up the cash for JSL in gw5 vs Leeds.

Any feedback welcome, especially around Guehi vs Richards, and any advice for my striker situation.

    Thanks!

Love the Sarr pick with the Madders injury. Richards > Guehi for defcon.

Just no Liverpool, feel like a massive risk to go against the reigning champions.

Yes you are right there, but i can't really justify the price points for many of their players, especially given the fixtures.

Plus, I could be the second Everton fan to win FPL without Liverpool!
        How cool would that be

    Thoughts on Matheus Nunes?

+ 5.5m for a City defender is cheap. City wasn't their best last season but surely they improve.
+ Not a lot of options at RWB. Rico Lewis probably his only real competition but I think Nunes has the edge. He started 3 out of the 4 games MCI played in the CWC ahead of Lewis.
+ 7 assists last season, only bettered by Robinson (FUL).

    - Livramento interest means City are still exploring RWB options in the market
    - Many more nailed options at 5.5m like Tarky/Murillo whose appeal has risen with the defcon addition to the game
    - Lewis just scored in the recent friendly against Preston (no lineup info on that unfortunately)

My backline rn is Gabriel VvD Nunes Milenkovic. I do think Nunes is an excellent option, and seasons past without this defcon stuff he'd be a favorite in the community. 0.6% is crazy low.
