With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) almost underway for 2025/26, we’re hearing from our panel of guest writers.

Here, Zophar – who usually hosts a weekly Q&A session for us – talks about the big FPL decisions that he’s still going back and forth on.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

What is Zophar still debating with one week to go?

Instead of my Q&A article – which returns next week – I’m going to put forth a few questions that remain in my mind, going into the final weekend of pre-season friendlies.

Morgan Rogers’ fitness

FPL pre-season: Rogers injury + Malen scores again

A mainstay in almost all of my FPL drafts, Morgan Rogers (£7.0m) played the most minutes of any Aston Villa outfield player last season. Another European campaign is coming for them, so I want someone I can rely upon.

However, he limped off with an ankle injury just a few minutes after coming on against Roma. Although the latest news suggests that Unai Emery is “hopeful” he might make the Newcastle United opener, Rogers probably won’t be featuring in either of this weekend’s friendlies.

If there remains positivity that he’ll get the all-clear, do I still take a chance on someone who has an ongoing injury issue? Because I really don’t like any of the other alternatives at that price point, or many below it.

Do I want to invest in Spurs?

FPL notes: Why Porro was benched, in-form Chelsea, Martin sacked

A kind Tottenham Hotspur fixture run has us looking at their defensive and attacking assets. But Dominic Solanke (£7.5m) is still to be seen after his ankle injury and missed the Bayern Munich friendly.

He might still play in the UEFA Super Cup next Wednesday, but again, I don’t like taking these risks. His issue could flare up at any point.

James Maddison’s (£7.0m) long-term injury delivers a huge blow to Spurs. I don’t think they have anyone who can play that position, knowing that Dejan Kulusevski (£6.5m) is also sidelined.

Pedro Porro (£5.5m) will likely be given more license to operate in a playmaking role and should get more set-pieces during the England international’s absence. While not cheap, he’s also been faring well for defensive contribution (DC) points in friendlies.

It should be noted that Mohammed Kudus (£6.5m) has also taken a few set-pieces. But how fluid in general will the Spurs attack be?

How much Liverpool?

FPL notes: Ekitike debut, Wirtz goal + 1

I watched the Reds’ latest friendly against Athletic Club and, although I had seen plenty of Florian Wirtz (£8.5m) in the Champions League, I was absolutely floored by his performance. He could have had a brace on the day, constantly turning up in very central penalty area positions.

The German might have been underpriced and I think he could be an absolute gift. Do I ignore him just because I already have Mohamed Salah (£14.5m)?

There is also the Alexander Isak (£10.5m) question. By grabbing those two and Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m), I’d be locking myself out of Isak if – and it’s a big if – he does end up transferring to them.

An attacking treble up feels like too much, but they’re all perfectly good assets in their own right. It’s not something I’m opposed to. Van Dijk is also arguably the best premium defensive pick.

Ignore Man City at my peril

3pm team news: Haaland + De Bruyne start, Marmoush a sub

The earlier Club World Cup has limited Manchester City’s pre-season outings and caused them to slip under the FPL radar.

But I expect Pep Guardiola’s side to be much better this season, and Erling Haaland (£14.0m) has a history of stunning starts.

I’ve been calming myself down by looking at their fixture run because it’s not amongst the best. Still, I expect them to be better than each of those opponents. That being said, no Haaland fixture brings huge captaincy potential until Gameweek 6, and, given that I’m reluctant to go without Salah, it would need Cole Palmer (£10.5m) to make way.

The Chelsea star also has some decent captaincy fixtures himself, so I am loath to make that sacrifice.

At the back, I think Rayan Ait-Nouri (£6.0m) will be an attacking monster and start the majority of their games. If I start without any defender at that price, moving over to him will be tricky.

How sharp will Chelsea be?

Best £7.5m+ forwards for FPL 2025/26

We’ve just learnt that Levi Colwill (£5.0m) will miss a significant part of the season with an ACL injury. Along with Marc Cucurella (£6.0m), he was the backbone of Chelsea’s defensive unit and helped in their build-up as well. He’ll be sorely missed and the absence puts me off Chelsea’s defence entirely.

Palmer’s performance in the Club World Cup final has restored some faith in him, and I think a bromance is brewing with Joao Pedro (£7.5m). While there is a risk that the Brazilian will share minutes with Liam Delap (£6.5m), I think he’s too good to be left out of the starting lineup and will be in more of them than we think.

That being said, I think the lack of pre-season makes going with both Palmer and Joao Pedro a bit excessive.

Sticky Toffees

FPL Gameweek 21 differentials: Ndiaye, Paqueta + Savinho

Everton are notorious for starting seasons poorly and I think they’ll need an adaptation period at their new stadium too.

Iliman Ndiaye (£6.5m) is in my current draft, but it’s the attacking position I feel least confident about, by far. He does tick several boxes, though: minutes, penalties and good DC potential.

Am I overthinking it? Do I take even more money out of my defence and make him Eberechi Eze (£7.5m) instead? This week’s transfer speculation around Ndiaye is slightly concerning.

What is Zophar still debating with one week to go?

Not my first draft, but the first one I'm posting, how's it looking? I will monitor the Rogers injury. The 5.5 spot is the only real punt, I think everyone else feels fairly safe starts wise?

    Sanchez
    VVD Williams VDV
    Salah Wirtz Palmer Rogers Reijnders
    Watkins Wood

Rodon for esteve. Leeds have a good 9 game opening. Burnleys hard. Burnleys 16 goal defense last season was a fluke. Their expected goals conceded was 39 compared to Leeds 29

I really feel like there's so much value this year in 4.5 defenders, I'm starting to think all 4.5 at the back is the way to go, so many good options

    1. Dorgu
    2. Wan Bissaka
    3. De Cuyper
    4. Konsa
    5. Guehi
    7. Truffert
    8. Van De Ven/Spence/Udogie

    Probably even missed a couple

For Two 4.5 mil Mids you will get 1 B.F

      i mean Bruno. Bruno. Bruno

Bruno is one of those players that has Everything. i mean everything

      1. Goals
      2.Assists
      3.Extra points for Mid fielder

      And most importantly
      1.90 Mins, Minute monster
      2. Penalities
      3. Set-Peices
      4. Bonus points for CRIBT. He would have scored close to 200 points last season including Defensive contribution points
      5. 3 new good signings in front of him who combined have 75+ Goal involvements.

      Additionally
      1. Rule change for how assists are awarded. even if a defender touches a cross/long-pass, assists are awarded. Bruno clearly benefists from this
      2. He is in general a Bonus points hogger.
      3. Cunha is good at creating penalities.

But to be honest, we cant pick him because he plays a bit deep. splice it up and get a nice Spurs 4.5 and dorgu. thank me later

Why the Bruno love? 9m for a centre mid in an untested team. I understand the penalty and def con appeal, but I don’t think he offers enough in open play to be worth 9m.

    no love for Gakpo?

he was the first in my teamsheet, but don't see him mentioned anywhere here.
is it just because Wirtz seems to be the better option?

Wirtz - Headliner that's why. Maybe be brilliant. I'm on Gakpo tho with Diaz gone. Also went for Marmoush instead of Wirtz. Hardly seeing Marmoush in any drafts either.

I like Marmoush but there is doubt even among Man City reporters whether he is nailed. £8.5m is a lot for a 2026/6 version of the 2024/5 Phil Foden

        1. martynteresa

Think Marmoush & Reijnders are nailed. Pepe doesnt put new signings straight into the team as soon as they sign. He has done it with both of them.
Rodri 6 Reijnders 8 type player box to box goals and assists as well as DC

Marmoush started 15 of 17 games when he arrived, despite Doku, Savinho, De Bruyne, Foden etc etc etc

Reijnders went straight into CWC team as starter even when Rodri started a game alongside him and in each game in 90 degree plus heat he wasnot subbed.

I see Reijnders as my Bruno. Both play 8 and rack up DC points. Both will score circa 8 to 10 goals. Bruno may have the edge by 3 or 4 assists being set piece taker. Reijnders could well cover that assist gap so 5.5m versus 9m. I'm in.

Wood 34 this year no that age means anything.
Expected goals last season was 12.He out performed big time.
          Elanga gone.

Strand Larsen 14 in his 1st season in Prem.
          Will be on penalties.
Arias signed. Assist monster. Fer Lopez too played with him in Spain.

I am expecting a reverse goal count for the 2. Wood down to 15 and Larsen up to 20

          Gakpo - minutes adjusted
Eredevise 18 goals, 19 assists per season
Europa Lge 10 goals 6 assists in 1800 minutes, equivalent of 17 goals and 10 assists
Premiere Lge 25 goals 13 assists in 500 mins, equivalent of 31 goals and 17 assists in 2 seasons
          Diaz gone - more minutes
          Wirtx creativity for more chances.

Ndiaye - 9 goals and ZERO assists in 2400 mins equivalent of 13 goals, zero assists for full season
and you can subtract 2 penalties, so only 7 goals from open play

Liverpool will create far more chances for Gakpo than Everton will for Ndiaye

          Summary

          Wood 15G 3A
          Ndiaye 9G 0A
          24G 3A

          Larsen 20G 5A

Hear me out, but I'd really like Newcastle to sort their CF situation out. Historically, you can always rely on them for goals, particularly at home. From Shearer to Carroll and Cisse to Ba. If it's not going to be Isak, then I'm very interested. Wissa at 7.5 and 1st choice would be a bargain.

Spurs still look like a side bedding in. I had him in my initial draft…watched their game against my team, despite us being favorite. Kudus is a good pick but could easily turn out to be all fart & no poo type of player. He has a poor game yesterday. Worth noting he took corners. B.J & P.M Sarr are equally good options so pts might be shared. The latter looked sharp against us.

Good luck. I like being different too but I have King Mo from the start. King of FPL. Don’t want to endure an early pain from him.

                Good luck to you too!

I'm not doing it to be different, just going without him and Haaland to start with so I can have a fairly decent team. Yeah it might sting but I'm confident in the players I've chosen for now 🙂

    is Ndiaye a trap?
never even considered him until I see the scout picks, but now it feels like a good pick i can't seem to switch out

Not a trap, the issue is Everton just look toothless and Ndiaye's threat from open play is pretty low

Underlying data isn't great but he's on pens and should have good mins regardless of Grealish signing on loan (could see Ndiaye move central behind CF). He has been linked with a move away.

I have 0 interest in Ndiaye tbh.

Everton don't really score goals. If he was 5.5m I'd have him but 6.5m, nah.

They failed to score in only 3 games under Moyes last season (vs Chelsea, City and Villa)

Leeds opening game is appealing. He’s in my draft but not convinced by that Everton attack

Probably. Think there’s a 60% chance of him being that. All of a sudden, people think Everton are the 2010-2011 Barcelona side. I don’t see many goals for them, the only thing i like is his spot kick appeal, if not mistaken.

I also think people haven’t considered the new stadium factor. Maybe they initially struggle like West ham & Spurs.

Likewise, any of the 5.0-7.0 M midfielders could easily flop so it’s a case of people investing in this range of options while hoping their picks turn out to be the best. So many options- Anderson, Palhinha, Sarr, Johnson, Rice, Caicedo, Kudus, Semenyo, Elanga, Mitoma, Minteh, Reijnders, Malen, Doku etc.

Thoughts on this? A few differentials.

    Kelleher/Dubravka
    VDV, James, Neco, Truffert, Reinaldo
    Salah, Palmer, Adingra, Kudus, Kluivert
    Fulkrug, Watkins, Gyokeres

    Planning to BB in GW2.

Other options are Diouf or Dorgu as a 4.5m but don't fancy the United fixtures
Also Wilson/O'Reily/KDH or Adingra but he has decent fixtures

Ideally hoping to save a few transfers and then get some City/Arsenal guys in for when their fixtures improve.

Diouf RAN Frimpong (Guddmnssn / DeCuyper)

Thoughts? Is it too defence heavy?

    Sanchez Dubravka
    Gabriel VVD Gvardiol Neco Guehi
    Salah Bruno Wirtz Malen King
    Watkins Bowen Guiu

there are too many cheap 4.5m defender to justify spending that much on defence IMO

A Villa defender is very playable for the first few fixtures. People forget they got 6 clean sheets in the final 10 games last season.

Yes. I'd downgrade one of them and then upgrade Malen/King as potentially you may not have three of your attacking players starting.

Downgrade one of your 6m to a 4.5m.

Which 4.5m defender would u suggest. Most defences are pretty poor except the top teams and the difference between a good and bad defender is so much less value than any other position in the game

Bournemouth have some decent fixtures after GW1 so Senesi or Truffert might be a decent shout. Konsa is a solid safe option, AWB/Diouf have decent fixtures as well.

don't see many people targetting defcon?
    too low potential?

basically a 'free' 2 points for a lot of players regardless of fixtures. a 'floor' of 4 points seems pretty good for a non-premium midfielders

    1. PartyTime
      • 5 Years

2 pts not appealing. It could even affect captain picks at times. Not sure Salah or Haaland are good for defcon. Bruno, Wirtz & Palmer aren’t bad though

Yeah I seen Kudus actullay got 13 recoveries yesterday for Spurs, I wonder is that side of his game being overlooked. Not saying he’ll be getting that many all the time but something to consider

Keep finding myself back to RAN and Frimpong in my draft. Are they worth the price ? I know risk of rotation etc but their ceilings are huge even if miss the odd game could still be great picks

    1. PartyTime
      • 5 Years

Yes, that’s the maximum price they deserve imo. You can always downgrade if they don’t perform or if they are often rotated

Probally my most different draft but here it is
    Sanchez
    VVD Williams Vdv
    Salah Palmer Wirtz Cunha Reindeer
    Watkins SL

Bench : Dubz Richards Guiu Esteve

Thinking SL as a set and forget and I really like the midfield , with Cunha playing with better players than he did at wolves.

Which team looks better? Feel Haaland could be a "differential" this season

    Kelleher/Dubravka
    VDV, James, Neco, Truffert/Senesi, Reinaldo
    Salah, Palmer, Adingra, Kudus, Kluivert
    Fulkrug, Watkins, Gyokeres

    Kelleher/Dubravka

    VDV, Cucurella, Neco, , Reinaldo
    Salah, Rogers, Kudus, Rice, Adingra
    Haaland, Pedro, Fullkurg

    1m left in the bank

They signed Villareal striker Barry for £25m who’s come on a few times for him in pre season so theres a little uncertainty there. And what form are u talking about

    Current tinker:

    A) Neto/7 and Georginho/6.0
    B) Kudus/6.5 and Mitoma/6.5

if you have others you prefer at those price points would be keen to hear them (already have sarr and ndiye)

Everyone seems to be mentioning Diouf yes he is attacking, but it's still West Ham who are not that attacking.

    I still can't decide on my 2bd 4.5 defender.

    Diouf is on the list.
