Shortly after the relaunch of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for 2025/26, we attempted to pick out the best £4.0m defenders in the game.

Now that we’ve seen every pre-season friendly take place, we have an even better idea of which of these bargain buys will start in Gameweek 1.

£4.0M DEFENDERS – PRE-SEASON GAME-TIME

Before we go further, a quick look at the £4.0m defenders with the most pre-season minutes. This data comes courtesy of our trusty Pre-Season Minutes Tracker.

We should stress that some sides contested friendlies, especially earlier in the summer, that were played behind closed doors and were kept relatively hush-hush. Line-up information wasn’t available for those games, so the true number for some of the names below may be slightly different.

With that caveat ringing in your ears, here are the leading names for (known) pre-season game-time:

If Rogers is fit to play, A or B?

    A: Rogers
    B: Pedro

(Rest of attack is: Salah, Palmer, Wirtz, Reijnders, Watkins, Mateta, and 4.5 mid/fwd)

    A. Wirtz Reijnders (Guiu)
    B. JSL Gakpo (King)

I prefer the first two in A but I'd rather have a 4.5 sub that could gain value rather than one that might lose value

Been settled on BB1 team for a few days. Probably FH2 and WC4.

    Sels // Perri
De Cuyper // James // Rodon // Milenkovic // VdV
    Salah // Wirtz // Neto // Sarr // Reijnders
    Watkins // Pedro // Ekitike

£1m itb to upgrade Perri, Rodon, or cover other news nearer the time.

Very different to my BB1 team!

I agree with In Sane above about Cucu and Perri. Verbruggen and Bizot seem good picks for GW1. Good for their price and nailed based on current info. If you go for both of them, you'll have an extra 0.5 to spend! I guess you didn't ask for opinions, though, and it's a virtue to be different in FPL.

    BB GW 1

    Sels
    Willliams - VdV - Spence
    Salah - Palmer - Ndiaye - Kudus
    Watkins - Pedro - Wood

Areola - Reijnders - De Cuyper - Diouf

WC GW 4. FH GW 6.

Basically all short term picks due to the early WC. plan. Thoughts? 🙂

Plan looks good. Areola under threat from Hermansen for GW1 spot, though. Bit of an expensive bench for a GW2 and 3 as well. Could maybe get that money into the XI (e.g. in defence)

Thought id weigh in on the Salah vs Haaland debate. So far I've had Salah in all my drafts and gone without Haaland but starting to wonder if thats a good plan or not.

For me Wirtz Gakpo and Ekitike are all good salah alternatives who will hopefully 'cover' some of his points whilst being much cheaper and allowing me to buy Haaland. I would probably want to get 2 of those 3 which begs the question- is it not simpler to just stick with Salah.

    Anyone else having similar thoughts?

It’s basically down to captaincy. If your willing to back against the field well and good.
It’s just easier to get rid of Mo than it is to get him.

Same:) it’s the ownership that scares us. On the flip side IF his form dips early doors it could be a huge head start on the field… welcome back FPL!

I have salah. Didn’t start with him last year and I swore I wouldn’t do it again. It’s tempting to take him on to get ahead if he does dip in form.

I just worry that pool have so many other arrows in the team. Salah might have to adjust his positioning are operating with this new set up.

His form tailed off at the end of last season. When his contract was signed it seemed to quench some of his output.
New players, new set up. Most likely the same old Mo! It’s just that carrot of getting one up on the majority early doors if he does slow down and the robot breaks the game.

Misleading stat. All 18 Salah assists not just Nunez, but Jota and Diaz too. Salah play in front three last season with Szobozlai not quite influential as 10. Thats why they bought Wirtz. With Wirtz and Ekiteke, we know they will get more assist and goals compare to Szobozlai and Diaz. They eat Salah's goals. Salah will get many goals and assists this season too, yes, but his form now not that good. Still think he can do well. Just to share my perspective.

Haaland is the only safe city pick, and in not him then city cover coming from who knows where?

Wirtz & Gapko combo offers the flex to better balance the team.

No forward options stand out to me

Watkins the closest, but at 9m the counterparts in MF, Bruno and Wirtz, have more routes to points

Badly need a resolution on Isak file. Even then 10.5 feels overpriced

Haaland and Gyokeres. We’ll have to see how the latter develops in the Premier League but you don’t just score 39 league goals from good fortune. These are world class European strikers with ridiculous shooting stats and an elite renommée. There are other exciting prospects coming in such as Ekitike and Šeško, so there’s no need to be too conservative with the picks.

Some takes from the last few weeks. Feel free to debate:

    - Spurs are a wait and see under Frank. There’s evidence yet that their attack is firing given the injuries, lack of matches together and new signings to integrate
    - Liverpool attack is going to be so exciting but Wirtz and Ekitike signings means points will be spread around. They have a changed system, more angles of attack, a playmaking no10 and wide overlapping fullbacks.
    - But Liverpool defence looks sketchy. Playing this system puts a lot of pressure on the CBs and CMs and they look vulnerable on the counter.
    - City attack is all around Haaland as the focal point. So if City win, Haaland will be on the scoresheet. Not sure you can say the same about Liverpool and Salah.
    - Bruno doesn’t look worth 9m. In the easier games he’ll start deeper and there are now more primary attackers which will boost his assists but reduce goal output. Yes DefCons help but Saka at 1m more or Wirtz at 0.5 less seem better options.
    - The forwards below 6.5 aren’t worth it. Guiu wastes a spot, JSL, Fullkrug, Barry and Thiago are playing for off form teams or haven’t yet provided evidence they can deliver consistently.
    - Unlike forwards, there are good mids at all price points, which should enable a more balanced team.

    1. Davido989
      • 15 Years
      4 months, 3 days ago

      Disagree on Bruno

      - Nailed
      - Pens
      - Better players to finish his chances
      - Will end games higher up once one of the front 3 are subbed
      - DEFCON
      - Assist rule change benefits him (scruffy passes/crosses)

He hasn't moved from my draft. Set and forget

      1. Sting
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Open play goals will be way down, while yes assists will be up.

I fear he will assist the assister more. Cunha, Sesko, Mbuemo are quite direct attackers and not so much combination players.

I think he will have a higher floor, lower ceiling

        1. Davido989
          • 15 Years

Remains to be seen then, I rather start with him and move away as opposed to restructure my team to move to him

          • 10 Years

You’re ignoring he’s an “attacking” midfielder with the most DCs, and is pretty much on all set pieces. All that while not really losing his position but being surrounded by more quality. For me personally, the appeal is definitely bigger than in the years before, lousy character though, never liked owning him in the first place.

‘Wirtz and Ekitike signings means points will be spread around’

For me it’s more about a change in the style of play and the way in which liverpool attack now. Ya salah will get his share but will he hit the numbers again if the game isn’t fully structured to his strengths.

This is just a FYI so take it with a grain of salt if you choose, but regarding these extra points for defenders: I play a different EPL fantasy game which already rewards tackles, key passes etc….and the defender who averaged most last season was……Munoz. Followed by Robinson, Gabriel, Milenkovic, Tarkowski.
Interesting enough, it wasn’t dominated by your top teams as it’s harder to get such stats up when your teammates have 70% possession.
Of course, it’s a different game with different scoring system (not capped for starters) but just putting it out there. Gvardiol came in 6th, with Virgil 8th…Porro sandwiched in between

    Gyokeres or saka?
    Is gyokeres on pen now?

Not known, but I hope so. If Saka remains penalty taker, it will be the first Arteta's first stackable offence! Odegaard has taken and scored a couple in preseason with Saka on the pitch and Gyokores not on the pitch. However, take what I have said with a pinch of salt because it is from memory and I have a dodgy brain.

    Which pair from the start?

    A) Tarkowski and Ndiaye/Kudus
    B) Cucurella and Tielemans/Paqueta

Anyone been following West Ham preseason? Is Fullkrug definitely starting first game and how has his fitness looked generally? I know he's scored a few, but haven't seen any of the games.

Anybody else really struggling to settle on a draft this season? I seem to be tinkering with my team constantly. Is it down to FPL being clever and pricing players well or is it a case of overthinking things.

Thoughts on Georginio as ST/CAM at Brighton? 6.0m MID with Pedro gone surely everything goes through him now? Expecting to start as the ST too in gw1

Not a bad shout at all. Assume welbeck isn't in contention for that number 9 role? (Not kept up with Brighton pre season)

Welbeck did not even play 1min in pre season, not exactly sure why but definitely Georginio will start as ST for now

I've had him in and out of my team. I think he'll do well. I'm debating between him, Wilson and Reijnders for my 2 cheaper mids. Currently have the other two as I needed the .5 elsewhere. I think he definitely will get minutes up top this season and after Mitoma should get the most minutes of their attacking players.

Yh he’s arguably one of their best creative players, doubt he will be dropped once Welbeck is back, will probably be moved to CAM where Pedro played last year. Just prefer his minutes over Reijnders/Wilson

    For GW1 only:

    A) P.M.Sarr (BUR)
    B) KDH (lee)
    C) Other 5.0 mid

    Arguments made last summer:

    1. New manager / tactical system
    2. Getting older
    3. Dropped off at the end of last season
    4. Unconvincing in pre season
    5. Other players from the team are much cheaper and can cover, he’s no longer the central focus …

    Resulted in 344 points.

Nothing is different this year. I just don’t see the argument at all. If the fall of is real then just sell to literally any other midfielder in the game. The downside of betting against is far bigger than the upside.

Anyone keen on taking a punt on Sesko to begin with?
If I do it’d mean I’d have to drop Bruno.

      Wait and see imo.

Tempted to start with JPedro as a placemaker for Sesko / any other 7.5 fwd who hits the ground running.

Yeah it’s wise thinking really, choosing a placeholder first sounds ideal, cheers bud!

GW1 BB, GW2 FH, GW4 WC. Would really appreciate some views. Is this GTG?

    Sanchez
    Murillo Williams Konsa
    Wirtz Gakpo Palmer Reijnders Bruno
    Watkins Gyokeres

Roels Solanke Van Der Ven Spence

What we thinking of this?! Gone huge in midfield!

    Sels (Dubravka)

Aït-Nouri, VDV, De Cuyper, Neco Williams (Gudmundsson)

    Salah, Saka, Palmer, Wirtz, Reijnders

    Gyökeres (Guiu, Kroupi).

Downgrade Saka and upgrade Kroupi imo
