Shortly after the relaunch of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for 2025/26, we attempted to pick out the best £4.0m defenders in the game.

Now that we’ve seen every pre-season friendly take place, we have an even better idea of which of these bargain buys will start in Gameweek 1.

£4.0M DEFENDERS – PRE-SEASON GAME-TIME

Before we go further, a quick look at the £4.0m defenders with the most pre-season minutes. This data comes courtesy of our trusty Pre-Season Minutes Tracker.

We should stress that some sides contested friendlies, especially earlier in the summer, that were played behind closed doors and were kept relatively hush-hush. Line-up information wasn’t available for those games, so the true number for some of the names below may be slightly different.

With that caveat ringing in your ears, here are the leading names for (known) pre-season game-time:

Looks good. Double Forest defence is a bit bold, but perfectly justifiable.

Double Burnley defence probably not justifiable. I'd swap Esteve for another 4.0.

Dubravka might not start GW1. Otherwise, it's nice. Diouf tends to be preferred to AWB around these parts due to his superior crossing ability, so they say.

I don't know anything about King, a filler to get 2 pts?
I would maybe risk it with Carvalho (with Rodon), but try to go with 5.5 via downgrading Cucu.

          1. Deulofail
            • 9 Years
            4 months, 3 days ago

It's for one game only. Will be benched in GW2 then sold, so I'm not keen on spreading money to the bench. The only 5.5 I'm interested in is Reijnders due to his attacking potential, but his minutes are a relatively big risk for someone I'm relying on for BB and I'm benching an extra 0.5-1.0 the next week.

King should play no.10 for Fulham against leaky Brighton, and could pick up an attacking return. Carvalho is playing a team with 5 CSs in their 7 pre-season games, and one of the best PL defences last season, and away from home. Not sure why I'd go there while KDH and Sarr are playing promoted sides. Maybe you can convince me!

            1. 420king
              • 11 Years
              4 months, 2 days ago

Was just going by likelyhood to do something offensive, at which Carvalho is better than the other two. That being said, his odds to so something are still folow, so I'd probably just go King and expect a 2 & hope for more.

    3. 420king
      • 11 Years
      4 months, 3 days ago

Putting a lot of faith in West Ham defense, I'd spread the risk.
      I'd also pick a different 5.5 mid (Reinjders/Malen).

What’s the hype with Guiu? Do we realistically see him regularly start for Sunderland and even if he did would we start him and think he will actually score regularly to start him? Surely that’s just a throw away spot, even if he’s at 4.5 (might aswell be a non playing 4.5) ? With players like Anderson/Reijnders, wouldn’t we like a rotational sub player like an Fulkrug/Thiago/JSL/Jimenez and not just a throwaway? Am I missing something here?

It's a throwaway in my view, but that's still a viable strategy. Save 1.5 vs Thiago and invest to strengthen elsewhere so you don't need the bench player.

Pointless to spend on 8th attacker outside of bench boost. Guiu is minimal funds outlay and *might* play/do something in unlikely event ever called upon. If you’ve decided to spend the min on an 8th attacker, he seems as good a pick as any based on what we know now. Which is basically nothing. That, plus abundance of midfield options, is why he’s in so many teams.

Random benchings happen all the time, rotation becomes more of an issue along with more surprise injuries as the season goes on.

That's why BB can so often be disappointing. I just see this as an opportunity to get it over and done with.

I'm not a fan of starting with the 4.0-5.0 players. Sure, once the good budget options emerge, I'll jump on them, but I favour a more balanced, deeper squad to start, which also suits a BB1

And I think it enables me to include more players that have some minutes risks, with back-up in waiting - hence James, Malen, Reijnders, even Gakpo potentially.

Although that might be mistaken, if those players get 15min cameos and keep my big scores on the bench.
