Shortly after the relaunch of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for 2025/26, we attempted to pick out the best £4.0m defenders in the game.

Now that we’ve seen every pre-season friendly take place, we have an even better idea of which of these bargain buys will start in Gameweek 1.

£4.0M DEFENDERS – PRE-SEASON GAME-TIME

Before we go further, a quick look at the £4.0m defenders with the most pre-season minutes. This data comes courtesy of our trusty Pre-Season Minutes Tracker.

We should stress that some sides contested friendlies, especially earlier in the summer, that were played behind closed doors and were kept relatively hush-hush. Line-up information wasn’t available for those games, so the true number for some of the names below may be slightly different.

With that caveat ringing in your ears, here are the leading names for (known) pre-season game-time:

    GTG?

    Sanchez
    Milenkovic Neco Diouf
    Palmer Bruno Wirtz Reijnders
    Haaland Watkins Fullkrug

      Nice.

I’m off Bruno as he’s he probably isn’t advanced with Sesko joining. I’d look at Gakpo for the Liverpool double up and pray to god they cover Salah.

Bottomed out. Only my 2nd RMT for the season so I’m hoping to get at least a few comments on this…

    Sels / Dubrav
Konsa / De Cuyp / Diouf / Reinaldo / Esteve
    Salah / Palmer / Wirtz / Rogers / Reijenders
    Watkins / Pedro / Evanilson

    BB2

I personally don't love the full 4.5 rotation, but that front 8 on a BB2 is a real power move.

I would say front 3 is solid.

Midfield is very (possibly over) strong if you are one of those who still believes in Salah. Even before the Charity Shield I was suspicious his returns will be seriously hampered by the arrival of Wirtz and Ekitike who are occupying the same central areas Salah would often operate in when Liverpool lack a credible centre forward.

Defenceis frankly poor imo. with the exception of Esteve who will rarely play none are defenders that will pick up Defcon points or are likely to get many assists. Diouf appears attacking but plays in a very fragile West Ham side that lacks potency in attack and de Cuyper is mot nailed and Brighton are much better going forward than attacking.

Personally I would look to get a couple of decent centre backs in as set and forget defon accumulators (regardless of fixtures). If you want to stay cheap then Rodon or Bijol (who returns from suspension GW2) at Leeds ...who are likely to be much better defensively than attacking or even both. If you can get to 5.0 then Lacroix or Collins will joover up defcon points for fun and both are threats going forward on occasion.

Thank you mate, appreciate the thoughtful comments. The defence is light on purpose as I’m seeing how teams set up first before opting to settle on a more expensive defence. It is definitely the biggest hole in this side.

Good point on De Cuyper. I have nightmares about Barco on this front. I will probably shift to Anderson as I think Fulham could bounce back on the defensive front.

Haven’t messed with No Salah. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt until a trend emerges.

      Re De Cuyper,

the Brighton attack concerns me because as far as I can see it relies on Welbeck (or Rutter who sits deeper).

That could mean a greater reliance on DC to get forward… or could mean fewer goals.

My view: better options out there.

    Rate my premium free draft?

    Kelleher/Petrovic
    Ait-Nouri - Frimpong - Kayode/Truffert
    Rice - Wirtz - Saka - Bruno
    Ekitike - Gyokeres - Watkins

    (Kelleher/Petrovic - Dewsbury-Hall - Kayode/Truffert - Hartman)

    0.5m in the bank

Got a baby on the way in September (poor planning, I know!), so won't be spending too much time on this in the opening weeks. This would be a risky, but potentially low maintenance approach. Brentford and Bournemouth rotate nicely for the first few weeks, so only need to swap the keeper and 3rd defender each week based on their fixtures, and choose a captain. After that, could swap Brentford players for West Ham (their first choice keeper should be established then) and carry on with the same tactic. Having half a million in the bank allows me not to worry too much about price changes in the meantime. Not pre-planning any chips, will see how form and minutes play out and decide on the go.

    Thoughts?

I liked the look of Kayode in the second half of last season, always had him in mind for this season - reckon he'll do well. Truffert is more of an unknown and a risk given the upheaval in the Bournemouth defence, but has a potentially high ceiling.

Thanks for taking the time! I'm still not convinced about the lack of Salah/Haaland/Palmer (and even Isak, once his future is sorted out), but it does allow me to play a certain way which could suit me in the opening weeks of the season at least. Then I could bring one or two premiums in on my first wildcard in Nov/Dec if I feel I want to at that stage. Hopefully I won't have lost too much ground in my mini league by that point!

I wonder who’s going to be the highly owned\talked up flop at the beginning of this season?

    Joao Pedro?
    Virgil?
    Palmer?

My money is on Chelsea forward and Kudus.

    1. FHRITP

Normally I would say Chelsea forward but I think Pedro will be hitting minimum 180 points. Was on track for that at Brighton frequently and can't see him doing any worse at Chelsea

I think Virgil. I think injuries will catch up on him.

      1. Tommy Template
        • 11 Years

Wasnt he like a 5m striker at Brighton? He needs to be a lot better at Chelsea to justify 7.5m. There are reasons to think he could do worse at Chelsea, the obvious being lack of pens which have been a huge part of his output for two seasons and rotation risk which is very high, too high for a player at that price imo. I also think hes a midfielder (in FPL terms) masquerading as a striker, similar to Marmoush, Cunha etc who got reclassified.

My fear would be j Pedro is so highly owned if he didn’t start the first three games or comes off early a few times his price might drop which may make it harder to replace him at that price point.

Outside of the big 4 who do you think has had a good transfer window so far?
I am quite impressed with West ham and Sunderland, for their level of spending and ambition. I think both will add another one or two more.

With the likes of Bournemouth, Brentford selling more than buying I can't see any other teams looking stronger than before.

    2. Mother Farke

Everton have improved on their attack by signing Barry, who so far in his career has been more clinical than DCL. They've just added Grealish and KDH, too, who can both unlock a defence.

In addition, let's not forget they've resisted offers for Branthwaite who is a vital part of one of the best defences in the league.

      1. MC Hammer
        • 13 Years
        4 months, 2 days ago

Improving on DCL is not hard but let's see how Barry does, I am yet to see him perform in this league so will hold my judgement for now. Grealish could be good but he seems to have lost that spark he had at villa, he needs to prove himself again

        1. Mother Farke
          • 1 Year

So you've judged Sunderland as having a good window for signing the likes of Guiu, but when a cub signs a player that has actually delivered in La Liga then you're undecided? Struggling to find sense in that, mate.

Not just Guiu, they have made some astute signings and if they all gel they will do good. All they need to do is survive which they have a good chance of doing if these signings come off

A player new to the league is always a risk

Man Utd obviously. They are a banter club but they have potentially signed 40-50 goals worth of talent there.

I think the top 4 are stronger and the gap to the rest grows. Might be a fight for 5th as Villa and Newcastle havent really strengthened and I dont think they have the depth to fight on multiple fronts.

Very concerned for Forest and Palace as the season goes on, very small squads for doing europe and a league campaign. Forest got very lucky with injuries last season too.

I quite like Everton's signings so far if I had to pick another. Can see Barry doing well, hes not being talked about much. KDH and Grealish could go either way but the ceiling is quite high.

sounds more like when rather than if wirtz will be essential. problem is I really want bruno too.

You can start with bruno for 3GWs and make the switch after that, if required.

Although I expect them to be a little bit worse for cleans this season, Frimpong has the attacking potential to make a huge mockery of the 6m price. Would they have dropped Trent to 6m this season? Bradley is competition but also often injured.

Morning, all! Which team is set better for GW1 / medium term? Any glaring issues in either (aside from not being too completely template)?

      (A)
      Sels Dubravka
      Tarkowski Collins Konsa AWB/Diouf Hartman
      Salah Palmer Rice Wilson P.M.Sarr
      Haaland Evanilson Guiu

      (B)
      Sels Dubravka
      VVD/RAN Tarkowski Konsa AWB/Diouf Hartman
Salah Palmer Bruno Rice P.M. Sarr
      Watkins Fullkrug Guiu

      (C)
      Neither, start over!

The three premium team is hard to balance and I feel the no Haaland team is more balanced but still not perfect

Option A is a struggle with the 3 premiums.
Option B is a bit short up top

      A) Ait Nouri, Porro and Kudus
      B) 2x4.5’s and Wirtz

      Thoughts on the above options?

Depends on the rest of the backline on option B.

I’d have Williams, Vdv, Diouf, Dorgu, Esteve or some combination of the 3x 4.5’s

          Sels in goal

Have to be option A, be a tough rotation each week.

Not a fan of Kudus but dont like 2 4.5s either. So A for me.

          You don’t like any 4.5’s?

First post of the season. Left it until now for first draft to save me changing every day..

      Sels Drubravka
      Frimpong Cucurella Konsa Wan-Bissaka Esteve
      Palmer Wirtz Gakpo Rogers Marmoush
      Gykores Pedro Mateta

No Salah allows for a strong front 8, plan to play 3 at the back each GW.

      Thoughts? Cheers.

Nice, prefer Watkins to start with.

No Salah is a big draw that front line Pedro, Mateta & Watkins is my ideal but not achievable with Salah & that defence.

It was similar to last year, I went no Haaland and the risk paid off. I guess it's a gamble that could go either way.

Why is everyone staying away from Gykores? Looked sharp in the last pre season match.
