With new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rules and new arrivals to consider, the Scout Squad are back ahead of Gameweek 1.

This week and every week, our in-house team of Sam, Marc, Tom and Neale will discuss who they think the best FPL players are for the upcoming Gameweek in isolation.

Only five players have been given universal backing for the opening weekend…

Scout Squad Gameweek 1

The focus is only on the upcoming Gameweek with the Scout Squad, so there’s no medium-term planning involved.

The players who get the most votes are much more likely to make the Scout Picks, although the final XI can’t exceed £83.0m – so occasionally, cheaper alternatives have to be found.

Each of our writers must meet the following requirements for this feature:

  • At least one sub-£5.0m goalkeeper
  • At least one sub-£5.0m defender
  • At least one sub-£6.0m midfielder
  • At least one sub-£7.0m forward
  • No more than three players from the same club

    Why is nobody getting Salah?
    Why I am reading so much about using chips like BB from the start?

      We are talking about the 53.3% owned Salah? Although down a little post Community Shield he will certainly be by far the most popular captain - ike probably more than every other captain added together as I can't think many of that lot won't captain him.

      Having a BB for the 1st half of the season and a 2nd for the second half of the season means holding the 1st for double gameweek season is redundant so it's attractive to just use it and get it out fo the way. I am.

                Maybe Neco > Murillo/Milenkovic. I was on Neco all preseason until a few days ago. Worried about Forest signing a new LB. But if you're WCing early, it might not matter. However, if you WC early, you might be able to find a player with better fixtures, e.g. Tarkowski (granted a less attractive option with Branthwaite's injury)

                  I see, you have Tark. Forest 5.5 then, or Porro if you can bench him against Man City.

                  Otherwise, I'm not a fan of Konsa. He's a bit nothing in FPL terms.

                    Could always swap Konsa for Tosin, but that's a bit lateral.

                    I'm not sold on spending 5.5 for Tark, to be honest. Thinking of doing this after the 'keeper swap:

                    Sarr > Paqueta
                    Bowen > Ekitike

                    And then making a gametime decision on whether to keep Rice or get Kudus. There are good arguments for both and neither.

                      Yeah idk. If you like Paqeta for attacking potential, then go for him. I wouldn't expect much defensively, myself. Ekitike is another fine choice if you're already planning to WC early. Long-term, a bit too risky, perhaps, but then you would only have Neco left under threat of a new signing (to the best of my limited knowledge). Things to consider!

          Verbruggen Kelleher rotate fairly well.

          Don't like rotating 4.5s usually but with extra chips this year easier to switch away from it on an early WC

          Alternatively go Sels and Dubravka

      Prefer Frimpong over VVD - I think his attacking returns will outscore VVD atacking returns+DC.
      I'm on Porro early doors.
      Cucu looks good but losing Colwill weakens them - similar situation with Tark but both are valid picks even if I haven't picked them atm.

    I’m seeing so many content creators picking Murillo over Milenkovic because of defcon.. but Milenkovic still got more points last season once defcons have been added… am I missing something lol

      You're missing the algorithms! Which I believe are favouring Murillo across the board. But I'm with you, based on results last year, Milenkovic probably has the edge. The other thing to consider, though -which I guess the 'AIs' have done- is that Milenkovic might score fewer goals and Murillo might score more.

        Thanks… I’m not liking any of the £5m+ defenders, other than the Forest defenders. So I’ve went Sels and then 5 £4.5m defenders who rotate well.

        I feel like the DEFCON introduction will result in there being very limited difference between points scored by defenders so I am saving my money for my attack!

        yeah, it's a concern. In another version, I have Dewsbury Hall over Arias and Fullkrug or Strand Larsen up top, but I really want double Forest CBs; I think they offer amazing value at 5.5m each.

      Forest double defenders is the right call. It all looks good to me, except Arias, because I know nothing about him, so I can't help you with your question!

      Congratulations to your son, and hope the trip doesn't get in the way of an important FPL decision and cause you to resent him for the rest of the season.

        I've not had Bruno in a draft until today. I've probably been swayed by Andy, FPL Harry, FPL Focal and so on. I've talked myself into thinking he'll start more advanced vs Arsenal, with Cunha.

        If I knew Watkins was on pens, then I'd get him.

      I'd really want to limit the number of new players to the league for a GW1 team to 2, 3 at most and not 3 attackers.

      You have Wirtz, Reijnders, Arias, Ekitike that are all new to the league. That's very dangerous to do imo.

        Hey Camzy, it is, and it's my achilles heel, tbf. It's the style of manager I am, I'm quite aggressive with punts.

        Reijnders - I've had from the start as I've followed his last couple of seasons with AC Milan.
        Ekitike - I can't see him not starting. Even Slot said he's needed vs Bournemouth, Newcastle and Arsenal, and that's why he didn't give him 90 mins.
        Wirtz - I'm not sure of his value yet. He needs to be De Bruyne levels of creativity, really.
        Arias - Complete punt, and I don't think I'll keep him. Porro to VDV and start with Ndiaye could be safer and see how he looks vs City.

      Big fan of Gakpo, but I've been put off a little by how open Liverpool were vs Palace. LFC Reds forum are suggesting Slot may go Mac Allister, Szoboslai and Endo/Jones in a midfield three with Wirtz starting on the left. Gakpo would be a game changer option from the bench.

      Everyone speculating of course. Difficult to know for sure.

      If you're planning to WC in a few weeks, I think I'd consider dropping Salah and using funds to upgrade for the BB.

      Wirtz, Kudas, Saka, Bruno, A combo of these is achievable and feels better that a few you have at the moment?

    Just thought I’d share my take from tonight Super Cup final: I don’t think Van de Ven is a guaranteed starter.

    Frank absolutely loves long throw-ins, adores them, and no one in the Spurs squad does them better than Danso. Decent defender as well. I think he’ll get the nod over VDV quite often when Spurs play with a back four. Romero’s place should be safe since he’s been given the captain’s armband.

    I think I’ve finally settled on my team but grateful for any improvement advice. Planning on BB GW1.

    Sels (Verbruggen)
    RAN Porro Frimpong James (Diouf)
    Palmer Gakpo Reijnders (Wilson P.Sarr)
    Haaland Watkins Fullkrug

    I don’t want Salah or VVD for sure. Rather Wirtz than Gakpo but not sure I can justify the additional £1m.

    Plan to transfer Gyokeres in for Watkins in a few weeks if performances justify it.

      5 in 5 says it is his place to lose although there is ofc pressure for the place. Expect quite a lot of subbings off though is the only worry.
