A fixture that tends to produce goals gets the day’s Premier League action underway.

The last six meetings between Aston Villa and Newcastle United have seen 25 goals scored, all of them big wins for one side or the other.

Kick-off in this latest contest between the Magpies and Villans is at 12:30 BST.

Aston Villa are without their goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for their season-opener.

The Argentina international is suspended after his red card in Gameweek 38 of last season, so Marco Bizot makes his competitive debut in goal.

After a late pre-season injury scare, Morgan Rogers is fit to start for the hosts today.

But Donyell Malen, who had a strong pre-season, is only on the bench. He had been featuring more up front over the summer, so perhaps Unai Emery sees him as Ollie Watkins‘ deputy.

New recruit Evann Guessand is a substitute, too.

Newcastle are, of course, without the wantaway Alexander Isak this afternoon.

Anthony Gordon, who, like Rogers, suffered a minor ankle injury late in the summer, leads the line in Isak’s absence.

Only one of the Magpies’ new signings gets a start, meanwhile.

Anthony Elanga is preferred to Jacob Murphy on the right flank, while fellow transfer window captures Malik Thiaw, Aaron Ramsdale and young winger Park Seung-soo are on the bench.

Lewis Hall and Sven Botman have had their minutes managed over an injury-affected summer and are among the substitutes, too.

Jacob Ramsey doesn’t feature for either side: he’s on the cusp of joining Newcastle from Villa.

LINE-UPS

Aston Villa XI: Bizot, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne, Kamara, Onana, McGinn, Tielemans, Rogers, Watkins.

Subs: Torres, Maatsen, Bogarde, Buendia, Malen, Jimoh-Alboba, Iling-Junior, Guessand, Wright.

Newcastle United XI: Pope, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento, Tonali, Joelinton, Guimaraes, Barnes, Gordon, Elanga.

Subs: Hall, Botman, Thiaw, Krafth, Osula, Murphy, Seung-soo, Miley, Ramsdale.

An incredible 0.05 xG for Watkins. On course for about 1.9 goals this season.

To get who? I think the fact that you're not sure who to buy suggests you should just keep Konsa

They kept a CS, and they'll probably have Martinez back (if he doesn't move). There aren't many other defences I trust at his price

Frank will probably roll out the 3-5-2 vs City anyway, so they might not get blown out

Looked that way many times last season, especially in open games (Pool with a new backline and without Grav was an open game)

Consistency has been the issue. He could improve this year, of course

            Check where he scored

My point isn't that he's a bad option. Just that having him requires the kind of patience that doesn't lead to jumping on GW1's highest scorer

Your first point is key - he does well against the big teams and struggles against the weaker ones. Also as you pointed out, Liverpool’s defence will tighten significantly from GW2 with Grav back.

just hoping the popular full backs can turn up and give the CBs a run for their money

need them getting 8-10+ attacking returns though, maybe more

Newly promoted teams normally do ok in their opening fixtures. Burnley won't win, but them scoring won't be a massive surprise. Maybe a Spurs OG.

          Hold. Nice fixtures.

Whenever people analyse at the end of the season, a conclusion is usually that transfers often lose them points, and they'd be better off doing nothing. I think this is one of those moment for you.

Yeah agreed. Couldn't believe how many points I lost last year from lack of patience over many gws. Although I like Semenyo and particularly Eketike.

Im in this situation and want to try and be patient especially with Watkins, that formation and team Villa put out today was wrong, it will be fixed next game, but Rogers to Semenyo is very tempting, Bournemouth also have great fixtures
