Hugo Ekitike (£8.5m) and Antoine Semenyo (£7.0m) hauls, a late Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) goal, early substitutions for Jeremie Frimpong (£6.0m) and Milos Kerkez (£6.0m) and a significant amount of defensive contribution (DC) points: there was much to analyse from Liverpool’s opening day win over Bournemouth.

We discuss the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Anfield below.

SLOT ON WHY FRIMPONG + KERKEZ WERE SUBBED

Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez made their Premier League debuts for Liverpool on Friday.

However, with the hosts leading 2-0, both full-backs were withdrawn just before the hour mark.

Frimpong was surprisingly replaced by Wataru Endo (£5.0m). Arne Slot later revealed Frimpong had “felt his hamstring at half-time”, with no risks taken.

“That wasn’t out of luxury. That was because Jeremie Frimpong felt his hamstring at half-time and made a lot of sprints. He was doing quite well, but the other right-back Conor Bradley is already out with an injury, so we don’t want to take the risk of losing another full-back.” – Arne Slot

Kerkez, meanwhile, was caught out several times down Liverpool’s left flank and had already been booked, so it was no surprise he was substituted for Andrew Robertson (£6.0m).

“Our left-back, Milos Kerkez, is a player that I think the fans like – because every duel he goes all in! But when you have a yellow card already and you play Semenyo, that’s quite a worry.” – Arne Slot

Even before the subs, Liverpool looked vulnerable at the back, as was the case at Wembley last week.

Given how susceptible they were on the counter-attack, you’d expect one of Dominik Szoboszlai (£6.5m) or Alexis Mac Allister (£6.5m) to drop out for Ryan Gravenberch (£5.5m) next week.

As for Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m), he might not be at his top level right now, but this was a better showing than at Wembley. He had a couple of headed attempts and racked up 21 defensive contributions, including 17 (!) clearances.

EKITIKE SUPERB

After finding the net in last week’s Community Shield, Ekitike scored again on Friday, his first home goal for the club.

In an excellent all-round display, he later claimed the assist for Cody Gakpo’s (£7.5m) strike to total 11 points.

He could have added more goals to his tally, too, having racked up four shots, including two big chances, in 71 minutes of football.

This heat map shows Ekitike’s movement against Bournemouth:

Often dropping deep to link play, before running in behind, Ekitike discussed his role – and specifically what Slot has asked him to do – after the match.

“Yeah, I think it’s natural. I also changed my way to play here because I think it’s also different football, with more intensity. The defenders are stronger and we have tight space here. I had so much more space in Germany. That’s why I try to come, link and go, try to run behind. But we have to find the way to succeed with the details, because it’s not [enough to be] ‘good’ anymore and we just have to get better.” – Hugo Ekitike

On his decision to withdraw Ekitike on 71 minutes, Slot said:

“He came later in pre-season, he has to adapt – as I think I can say Liverpool is a bigger club than Frankfurt. The league is probably more intense as well, so for him to be able to play 70 minutes is already a big bonus after being two or three weeks here. So that’s where we are at the moment, because we lost some players.” – Arne Slot

Elsewhere, Florian Wirtz (£8.5m) had a quieter night but did show glimpses of what he is capable of, as he nearly scored in front of the Kop and created three chances.

LATE SALAH GOAL

Salah left it late, but to the relief of many, sealed the victory in injury time.

Captained by 3.6m FPL managers, the Egyptian had previously tested Djordje Petrovic (£4.5m) with a fine shot from just inside the penalty box, which the Bournemouth goalkeeper tipped over.

It continues Salah’s fine Gameweek 1 record. Remarkably, he’s still never blanked.

Prior to Salah’s strike, substitute Federico Chiesa (£6.5m) had restored Liverpool’s lead.

SEMENYO IMPRESSES

As for Bournemouth, they were tricky opponents for Liverpool, as they offered a constant threat on the counter-attack.

Despite having their talent raided over the summer, Semenyo hit a shot over the crossbar in the first half, but quickly made amends with a superb second-half brace.

Andoni Iraola handed first starts to Petrovic, Bafode Diakite (£4.5m) and Adrien Truffert (£4.5m) at Anfield.

The trio produced promising displays, particularly centre-back Diakite, who only arrived from Lille on Wednesday.

A quick word on Marcus Tavernier (£5.5m), too. He was deployed in a box-to-box role and racked up 20 defensive contributions as a result.

Elsewhere, budget options James Hill (£4.0m) and Eli Junior Kroupi (£4.5m) were both benched, but were introduced as substitutes late on.

Now that the trip to Liverpool is out of the way, the Cherries are about to embark on a very decent run:

They're going to have to re-do defcon next year aren't they? It was already looking a bit of a farce that it weighted all the bits equally when clearances and recoveries were the dominant bits. Might as well just rename it clearance and recovery contributions

True. I guess it depends on why they actually put it in the game. If it was to make certain positions/teams more viable options then its worked.... kind of. If its to actually reward defensive efforts its mainly rewarding hoofing the ball away which is a questionable skillset

17 clearances alone! Certainly takes the edge off losing a cs and a point for 2 goals conceded

The bigger concern I'd have re Kerkez and Frimpong is if they are getting subbed that early they aren't getting cleans either

VVD has no competition and 90 mins in the tank always. Always going to be better for DefCon, especially as he's so dominant in the air.

Fbref which uses Opta vs FPL which also uses Opta(I think).

    VvD 17C+3B+1Int.+0T=21 /// FPL 20 DC
    Konate 8C+1B=9 /// FPL 8 DC
    Senesi 9C+2B+1Int+2T=14 /// FPL 14 DC
    Adams 3C+2B+3Int+6R+1T=14 /// FPL 18 DC

Unless I'm missing something, one seems to be updated and the other not. Either way, I can foresee a lot of drama with the games played in the last day of the GWs, once Opta updates the stats and won't match the FPL data.

    1. Moon Dog
        3 months, 21 days ago

Good point. With so many late revisions of these kinds of stats it's going to produce a high error rate in FPL.

Also I don't know if you did this but you need shots blocked in fbref not just blocks. There aren't normally many anyway but it could make a difference here and there

No that doesn't surprise me entirely. You can look at stuff from Opta in 4 or 5 different places that say they use it and none of them ever match up very well.

Assist Rule - No assist will be awarded if the goalscorer loses and regains possession before the goal is scored
How was McAllister assist awarded given that Etiteke lost and regained possession?

Will be tricky to resist knee jerking Rice / Kudus / Rogers to Semenyo if any of that trio fail, with the fixtures Bournemouth have coming up

Should be done. Semenyo posts the best numbers since last season. Averages almost 4 shots a game and is clearly the main guy in that team.

Worth pointing out that he scored most of his goals last season against teams with good defensive numbers :
          Forest (X2)
          M. United (X2)
          M. City
          Chelsea
          Fulham
          Everton
          Leicester (X2)
          Southampton

He's an unpredictable player that can frustrate you despite his potential, so you better be prepared to keep him for a good while.

Tim Cahill was excellent at headers, especially considering he is only 1.78m tall. Shearer was another one.

I think the way the game is played these days makes heading less important. In the early days of the PL it was more direct, with wingers whipping in the ball towards the big centre forwards.

          1. Moon Dog
              3 months, 21 days ago

Tim Cahill and Shearer were mainstays in my team back in the day. Good times.

I dunno, I think headed goals are starting to come back. We're seeing a move towards big tall centre forwards again. Only difference now is that they're quick too, and can press and help in the build up. The physicality of modern footballers is nuts.

Its moving back towards heading being important because everyone has latched onto the success Brentford (mainly) were having with set pieces. Arsenal got mocked for it last season, suspect there will be others this season looking at it and the inverse of that will apply that if teams are doing more with set pieces, the need to defend them better will apply. The bit about wingers is true, they all seem to cut in and shoot now and it baffles me as to why defenders let them.

We had Andy Carroll at Reading for a short while and his heading was unbelievably good; the way he could cushion headers into through balls for our wide players was like nothing I’d ever seen before.

I'll be waiting and seeing for a few weeks yet. Might get a clearer picture once the weekend is over though if that game last night was going to be an exception or the norm. Don't forget goals for a defender still make up 3 games of defcon.

You would hope but it wouldn't surprise me if they hadn't done this and just picked a random number, that they'd looked at 5 years worth of data for example to see how often those thresholds are met. Only having it be 2 more as a threshold for a midfielder when they get recoveries as extra which is their main thing, is a mistake I think.

Why is it too low? The whole point was to make CBs and DMs more viable. Only Van Dijk and Szoboszlai reached the threshold for Liverpool. We knew that weaker teams would get DefCon in tough fixtures.

For the enjoyment of the game, you should be watching hoping your attacking midfielder scores or assists, not hoping a DM (on 11 DefCon) makes a clearence. I think 15 for Defenders and 15 for Midfielders is a more appropriate threshold.

I suspect that he will continue to be a good option. Isak will be a kid-gloves 70/75 minute man so Etitiake will either move to the centre if already on the pitch, or come on from the bench. I'd expect three of Etitike. Isak, Gakpo and Wirtz to be on the pitch almost all of the time.

Ironically if slot had waited another minute, Frimpong and Kerkez would have got 5 and 6 , making them the highest scoring defenders...

Woke up with regret at ditching Gabriel for Porro. Had him all pre-season but had a last min panic about his pre-season mins. Best defender in the game and fancy him to get returns against anyone. VDV was fine as Spurs coverage.

as a VDV owner, I say he glass hamstrings. Gabriel is class, but he's 6 and if last night is anything to go by, he could be swamped by the cheaper def con defenders a bit

I have noticed this, you expect to see how good the alternative can be however instead you just see money spread all over the squad and not a lot to show for it.

I'm not seeing much benefit in those teams to counteract the anxiety of not owning Salah not to mention the fact that there will be no reliable captain pick every week and it will be somewhat of a lottery. Yes you could try and manipulate the fixtures but there is no player like Salah. It's a very poor and naïve play.

Last sentence is disrespectful. I have been playing fpl for 20 years and have always done ok. I fancied a different tactic of no Salah this time around to see how it panned out. With Salah i wldnt have had Ekitike ( not much diff in points ). I am prepared to see the situation for gw4 wildcard and see how he is doing. His next 2 matches are tough. Let’s wake til this gw ends before making those sort of comments.

This. People forgot Haaland plays in the same league. Liverpool is starting to spread their offensive contributions, while with City you know where the ball is going. Sloppy at defending too, I decided not to start with any Liverpool players.

I did feel that when building my team to be honest. However, I've needed to purposely spread my funds and I don't plan on perma captaining Salah (just feel it's less rewarding for the game I want to play this season).

posted above... 3 chances created and was the highest rated player on the creativity index with 46.2
Definitely sticky with Wirtz, the goal contributions will start flowing

It’s only the first game of the season - see how he does this in the next two at the least

Oh yeah, I’m not planning to do anything with him yet. He nearly assisted another Gakpo goal.

current PP odds to end up top goalscorer (who we need, if correct)
                    Haaland (1.5/1)
                    Salah (4.5/1)
                    Isak & Gyokeres (6/1)
                    Ekitike, Palmer & Pedro (14/1)
                    Watkins & Sesko (25/1)
                    Solanke (33/1)
Semenyo, Marmoush, Mateta & Wissa (50/1)

sorta endorses the 3 Mids, for me....thoughts?

Sesko, Wissa & Solanke are going to be interesting when they get settled.

Precise question: is there anywhere I can find out how many managers ahead of me have played their FH?

That would be quite something: play your FH in GW1. (It's not possible of course)

Maresca's comments about losing Colwill (Levi), give me a warm feeling about my 4.5 Tosin entry into Chelsea defence

"When we build, we build with Levi in the middle. It's different to the player in the middle on the left side," Maresca explained.

"Last year, we played 64 games and we played 64 games with Levi and Tosin [Adarabioyo]. Now Levi is out, the only one that he can do that job well is Tosin.

"[Jorrel] Hato is a new one. He never played as the guy in the middle last season. So it's not about being a central defender. Yes, [he is a] central defender. Can he do that? It's different, it's not just about that."

From that comment Tosin seems nailed. Colwill is out for forever too isnt he?

Forget the fact the window us still open and Maresca's other quote regarding wanting a new CB.

i read that as, IF he gets a new CB it'll be to play with Tosin. Either way, I'll take the Tosin ride until it's over, at that price (a few clearance would help)
