Cole Palmer (£10.5m) and Joao Pedro (£7.5m) failed to break down a well-drilled Crystal Palace outfit on Sunday.

Here are the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) takeaways from Stamford Bridge.

PALMER + PEDRO QUIET

This was the first time since Gameweek 1 of the 2024/25 season that Chelsea failed to score at home.

For all their firepower, there weren’t loads of chances either, with only two shots on target.

Just one big chance was created, too, as they looked a shadow of the team that destroyed Paris Saint-Germain in last month’s FIFA Club World Cup final.

Enzo Maresca opted for Joao Pedro to lead the line.

The Brazilian, who is the most-owned forward in FPL, had scored five in five since his arrival, but only touched the ball 23 times and had two shots, both off target.

Liam Delap (£6.5m) was subsequently thrown on to replace him on 72 minutes.

As for Palmer, he was equally quiet and has now failed to score from open play in any of his last 17 Premier League games for Chelsea.

Above: Cole Palmer’s shot map v Crystal Palace in Gameweek 1

Pedro Neto (£7.0m) and Jamie Gittens (£6.5m) also lacked quality on the flanks, and they’ll already feel under pressure from substitute Estevao (£6.5m), who did at least bring some excitement to Stamford Bridge, almost creating a goal with his first involvement.

“He was very good. He showed personality – he has already shown that in training. He will be a very important player for this club.” – Enzo Maresca on Estevao

But perhaps it was to be expected that Chelsea wouldn’t be as sharp as Palace, given that the Blues only started pre-season training 13 days ago.

They do at least face West Ham United next, who suffered a miserable 3-0 loss at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

“We could have counter-attacked better but it is only the first game of the season. They played about eight games, we played just two so we tried our best.” – Enzo Maresca

£4.0M ACHEAMPONG STEPS UP

With Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) and Levi Colwill (£5.0m) out injured, teenager Josh Acheampong (£4.0m) partnered Trevoh Chalobah (£5.0m) at the back.

Confident on the ball, he looked more than ready, registering eight defensive contributions (DefCons), including five clearances.

“They played very well, they didn’t concede anything. Josh [Acheampong] did well, he is very young and he is going to be a good player for this club.” – Enzo Maresca on his centre-backs

Acheampong’s long-term prospects remain unclear, however.

Tosin only has a “small problem” according to Maresca, but the Italian wasn’t sure exactly how long he would be out.

The return of Wesley Fofana (£4.5m), who was on the bench against Palace, was also discussed.

“Physical problem – we don’t know for how long.

“Wes was on the bench. Hopefully for the next one we can start to use Wes for some minutes.” – Enzo Maresca on Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana

Elsewhere, Marc Cucurella (£6.0m) was active in attack and often inverted into midfield, with his early flicked header cleared off the line.

Moises Caicedo (£5.5m), meanwhile, put in plenty of tackles and interceptions and claimed five points, thanks to 12 DefCons.

PALACE STAND FIRM

Out of the two managers, Oliver Glasner will no doubt be happier.

Eberechi Eze (£7.5m), who started despite transfer interest from Tottenham Hotspur, thought he’d opened the scoring after smashing a free-kick past Robert Sanchez (£5.0m), only for VAR to rule it out.

Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.5m) was later denied after a smart pass from Adam Wharton (£5.0m).

However, this match was all about Palace’s rearguard, who embraced the battle and just wouldn’t let Chelsea through.

Indeed, Dean Henderson (£5.0m) didn’t have a proper save to make.

Maxence Lacroix (£5.0m) was the standout defender. Equal to everything thrown at him, he anchored the back line superbly and racked up 16 DefCons.

Palace still have some tricky fixtures to come, but on Sunday’s evidence, will be difficult to break down.

Anything particularly pressing here? Debating Bowen > a 7.5m forward, but also debating a WC already before all these prices rise haha

    Sels
    Gudmundsson - Munoz - RAN
    Sarr - Wirtz - Bruno - Palmer - Reijnders
    Haaland - Bowen

    Dubravka - Diouf - VDV - Guiu

I’d give Bowen the Chelsea game, they were underwhelming today and you’ll still afford a 7.5/7.6/7.7 forward in a weeks time with better info

yeah Chelsea didn't look great today and WH need a big bounce back after that, was gonna potentially catch the price of wood but it would be for a -4.

I'm top 500 and will be wildcarding or free hitting. This weeks team is not what will score next week.

I always wildcard early, usually after a bad start, and tend to end up doing well. Thankfully a lucky start this time around, but I need to stick to the plan of getting on the bandwagons, it had always worked for me and I've been playing for over a decade.

With the double chips this year, id say don't be so precious with them and just go for it if you think it will work out better overall for your team.

Think im closer to arrival free hit right now... which wasn't really the plan, but apart from Semenyo, all my players are rising... so im thinking to maybe let them keep rising while I free hit this week, then sell on for the profit next week if they double rise... the likes of kudus etc, I only had them in mind for gw1.

    Ismaila Sarr to Reijnders?

Obviously pretty knee-jerky, but Reijnders looks 2.5/3m underpriced, and getting Sarr ahead of him looks like a mistake I can correct pretty easily.

Think there’s a lot to be said for having players that play the full 90 minutes; Palmer, Bowen, Rogers all still very good options as will play 90 every week.

I’ve done Watkins and Palmer to Reijinders and Haaland for a -4

Just came home. Liked the Arsenal game but wanted to see a slightly better attacking display from us. Can’t complain with a win though. Walked in their gaff, took the 3 points and left.

Saw the Chelsea game too, Palmer is back to the Palmer of earlier this year. Completely different role to when he’s at his best on the right.

I had Aina but switched to Williams before deadline because people said he's much better for DC... but then of course Aina was best for DC. I should have known better.

I think of all the list I put, N Williams is the least problematic. Some of the others are pretty pricey so if they don't start scoring, that feels like a huge waste of money.

Who would you get rid of first from that list?

I personally wouldn’t get rid of any of them unless you need to get Haaland, in which case it would need to be downgrading Palmer. Otherwise I’d hold.

Yeah, only way to get haaland is to downgrade palmer. I'm 1mill off doing Palmer+Watkins -> Semenyo+Haaland, so not going down that route I think.

            I'll probably hold, thanks.

Or maybe Wirtz at a push. He’s obviously a good player but could be a Modiric type, assisting the assister.

Maybe I'll give him another week. Seen it happen a bunch of times where everyone buys Ekitike because he scores GW1 only for Wirtz to outscore him in the first bunch of games.

Jumping on the bandwagons in the first few weeks is great for team value, but not really that' great for score.

I think both Porro & Esteve will concede and unsure which will conede the most as i think Sunderland are looking good on the stats against Burnley. Possibly if those are the only 2 options then go for Porro with a chance of an assist though i have Alt Nouri so i hope that does not happen 🙂

If you’ve got no other fires to put out then I’d recommend this move.

Cucu could be the best value player in the game.
His positioning is insane, a defender playing centre forward.

He is a red card liability though…

Cucu is hit or miss for me. Can be very good in occasional games. His defensive positional sense and ability to sense danger is questionable. Opponents know he's easy to distract.

Agree with all that, but from an FPL point of view he’s so attacking which is gold. Plus he’s a BAPs magnet.

Sensible move to hold the transfer. Slightly tempted by Salah plus Joao Pedro to Haaland plus Semenyo. Would be for a hit, looks good next couple of weeks but risk I might be wanting to switch back to Salah GW4.

Does this team warrant a free hit? Terrifying already not having Haaland…

    Sanchez (Dubravka)

    Tarkowski Milenkovic Esteve (VDV, Rondon)

    Salah Palmer Reijnders Fernandes Kudus

    Watkins Bowen (Guiu)

What was your thinking before the season started? Haaland was obviously going to do well

But Watkins and Bowen was not expected to blank. Can’t panic after one GW

I am not seeing any price changes yet. But I see people on here saying they switched players for -4 or whatever.

Am I looking in the wrong place. I'm in the transfer tab and have my team in list view. Still says Reijnders prices are 5.5

So what are they talking about

    1. GreennRed
      • 14 Years

They sold two or more players and took a hit or more.

      no changes have happened yet.

If there are any changes today, they will happen in 1.5 hours from now. It will happen at the exact same time every day, but will be 1 hour out when the hour change goes back.

Thx thats what I thought. Am a newbie.
Ow I just figured out what they meant -4
he transferred 2 players out and in and if you do that the 2nd transfer costs 4pts
Thought he was taking about .4m

        Thanks for the reply guys

For the last few years the first price changes have happened on the Sunday night of opening weekend, ie tonight this season. That has been the case whether or not there is a Monday game. So I am considering transfers in the next hour to get ahead of first price changes.

Anyone else think the ball was already over the line when Calafiori headed it? It was certainly going in - I bet Rice owners are not happy.

Under the new rules Rice got an assist either way

He would’ve been awarded the goal had Calafiori left it.

Have started with the big 3 Salah, Palmer, Haaland.

Would love to downgrade one to upgrade defence and 3rd forward. Tough call between Salah and Palmer have Gakpo, Reijnders and J. Pedro at present.

I want to believe in a big 3 team but it's hard to justify some of the sacrifices. 2 of the 3 might be the play but not WCing this early.

Its not a tough choice, liverpool are free flowing and scoring 2+ per game, Chelsea and Palmer are struggling to create and score, he has 1 goal since Christmas from open play. I have sold.

      Depends on what criteria

Sem, Bruno and Reindeer will post similar points i reckon : 150 - 200 range, based on price its reindeer clearly. I have Bruno and am selling, way too deep in this system.

The others in your list will barely get 125 max

Thoughts on whether I should transfer in Rejinders for Rutter?
    Or hold transfer..

    Sels
    Porro - Neco - Diouf
Salah - Writz - Palmer - Rutter- Rogers
Pedro - Watkins

Dubravka - Kroupi Jr - Andersen - Rodon

Great start without BB - 73 and going to be agressive with WC

    Going for this - thoughts?

    Sels
    Lacroix Ballard Cucu
    Sem Salah Cunha Anderson Reindeer
    Haaland (c) Ekitike
    Dub, Bjiol Esteve Guiu

I like many of these to be tailsmen, reckon Cunha , Semenyo and Ekittike will be moved on in a few weeks for the likes of Isak and some cheaper midfielder options
