If you’re one of several Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who already massively regret the big choices made heading into 2025/26’s opening weekend, a Gameweek 2 Wildcard has a certain allure.

Whether the plan is to own Mohamed Salah (£14.5m), Erling Haaland (£14.0m) or both, you may feel that enough clues have been revealed to justify such a bold move.

Managers have until the Gameweek 19 deadline to use the first Wildcard. These unlimited free transfers are a chance to fix all mistakes and start planning for the future.

So let’s list the pros and cons of a Gameweek 2 Wildcard, then provide a few draft ideas.

Don’t forget that you can get your Wildcard team rated via our Rate My Team tool or Plan FPL!

PROS

FPL notes: How many matches Konsa will miss + 1

Fix early mistakes

Those owning several of Jeremie Frimpong (£6.0m), Florian Wirtz (£8.5m), Joao Pedro (£7.5m) and Ollie Watkins (£9.0m) may think they’ve got it all wrong.

Especially if they’re invested in Niclas Fullkrug‘s (£6.0m) blank at Sunderland or Dominic Solanke (£7.5m) – sat on the bench while Richarlison (£6.5m) netted twice.

Throw in the Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) knock and a one-match Ezri Konsa (£4.5m) ban, and some of the unluckiest managers have quickly found themselves with fires to put out.

Increase team value

These early weeks traditionally bring plenty of price rises and falls, so team value can be boosted by ditching the droppers and jumping onto bandwagons.

As of Monday, there have already been increases for Tijani Reijnders (£5.6m), Hugo Ekitike (£8.6m) and Antoine Semenyo (£7.1m).

Get some Arsenal

Arguably, the most appealing Gameweek 2 fixture has Arsenal hosting newly-promoted Leeds United. Yet a lot of teams are without any Gunners coverage at all.

Sunday’s win at Old Trafford was a firm reminder of their defensive qualities and set-piece threat.

CONS

FPL notes: What did Howe say about Isak absence? 2

Small sample size

On the other hand, it’s way too reactionary to make calls this early. Those earlier ‘mistakes’ were purchased for logical reasons, based on more than one runout.

Have faith that they’ll deliver in the next one or two Gameweeks.

Real-life transfer window is still open

Meanwhile, choosing to Wildcard while the summer transfer window is still open could soon backfire.

For example, we don’t know where Alexander Isak (£10.5m) will end up and how it’ll affect Ekitike. Perhaps Yoane Wissa (£7.5m) moves to Newcastle United, as rumoured.

Tottenham Hotspur should be active in the next fortnight and the possibility of Eberechi Eze (£7.5m) is exciting.

GAMEWEEK 2 WILDCARD IDEAS

DRAFT 1: SALAH OVER HAALAND

FPL Gameweek 2 Wildcard: Pros, cons and three possible drafts

Ok, Haaland won the first round over Salah and has better fixtures in Gameweeks 2 and 3. But the Egyptian King has earned our trust many times over.

This 3-5-2 squad happily ditches West Ham United’s assets and covers the one-match suspension of Konsa.

Furthermore, Morgan Rogers (£7.0m) and Micky van de Ven (£4.5m) are preferred over teammates Watkins and Pedro Porro (£5.5m), because it unlocks the money required for Bukayo Saka (£10.0m). He can now be given Gameweek 2 captaincy.

DRAFT 2: HAALAND OVER SALAH

would really advise not WCing or burning transfers this week.

we need more information on a bunch of key players like Watkins, Wirtz, Palmer etc.

having 2FTs in GW3 or 3FTs in GW3 may be pivotal

Very logical and good advice. I finished on 44 points.. it’s a long season and patience is required.

Only move I’m contemplating is moving Pedro to Evanilson.
Hopefully Watkins, Writz and Rogers get some points gw 2

Each to their own game. I always go early, even more viable now with all the extra chips and transfers

      So far it seems
City are back - Haaland is needed
Liverpool have alot of attacking potential and not just Salah alone
Arsenal and Chelsea continue to struggle to attack

Potential tailsmen in Semenyo , Cunha , Strand larsen etc emerging.

The game has evolved, rules have changed, more transfers can be banked, more chips available to get you through difficult weeks on paper, yet outdated advice like don't WC, stay patient, wait for info still lingers.

      1. The Pretender
        • 10 Years

I think it's perfectly viable to suggest not to WC GW2 - however its a case by case basis. If you have selected people who got the role you expected and the team performance you expected and blanked, I would suggest you don't WC. If however you have injuries, poor roles, a red card, and a number of other issues going on, then I think a WC is perfectly viable.

        1. fedolefan
          • 12 Years

I don’t think you can advise in general whatsoever. There’s lesser value in waiting these days. You can WC and bank transfers, if you’re so inclined. You can run a free hit if you have short term injuries. The abundance of chips has just reduced the impact of the WC yet folks pretend it is the most important chip like it is 2015.

    Current WC draft

4.5 keeper ( Petrovic or Roefs)
    Cucu Ait-Nouri Richards Ballard
    Salah Cunha Semenyo Reindeer
    Haaland Ekitike
    4mil Gudmonsson , King, Guiu

I like the structure, losing faith in the idea of Chelsea or Arsenal having value in their attackers. Longterm trend has been poor for Saka and Palmer, great players but I think both managers will ultimately be too conservative

This will be the template IF
    - Liverpool continue to be gung ho
    - Sunderland offer defensive value
    - City are back ,
    - United attack are back.

The thing is - Liverpool look even more attacking, and now its basically Salah + another attacker needed at least.

He may drop from last year but then again Liverpool could easily outscore last year

At times he was super central and I like Ekitike capacity to link and be a target man. Feel a Son and Kane vibe from 2020 there.

Liverpool have an 8.5mil center forward who has scored or assisted in i think almost every game he played so far ( preseason, cup, league), He will be good until at least week 5 assuming Isak actually joins. Could be season good otherwise

Palmer is playing deep and not worth the price I believe unless moved back to the right side of attack. Arsenal are not exactly pulling up trees in attack. Your picks look rather conservative. Goalies are poor.

      My WC is more attacking
      Roefs

I was expecting my No Salah No Haaland squad to at least get off to a good solid start, but it was a disaster, even worse than last year's.
A pathetic 35 points, a rank of 8.869m, and eliminated from LMS already.
Sanchez and Lacroix both scored 8, but Lacroix was second on my bench.
The only other player to score more than 3 was Tarkowski with 4.
My three defenders all conceded very late goals to destroy their clean sheets, and my attackers all blanked.

49, meh. Below par but not a dumpster fire.

Rough: 7 blanks, including Palmer, Watkins, Wirtz, Rogers and Evanilson. 42m for 11 points - you beauty!

Smooth: Salah C late save. Chelsea defense, Porro looks set for a much better defensive season, and big Tark did exactly what I thought he would do - nearly jagged a goal and the late pen probably cost him a 10+ pointer!

Rolling my FT as every single player got their expected role. Looking forward to better matchups this week for Palmer, Watkins, Rogers and Evanilson and see if I can get more than 11 points out of the 42m from those 5 premium-ish guys!

I'm not happy with 51. Really wanted to go with Haaland but couldn't get him in with Pedro, Wirtz, Palmer and Salah without the rest of the team looking pretty fugly.

Rough: not going with Reinders when he was in my side all the way up to the deadline and picking Rutter instead. Also not thrilled with last minute decision to go VVD and Porro.
Smooth: not much. Rodon's 7 saved me from 46 or worse. Played him over Diouf. Glad I never considered Gyokeres. He looked terrible.

Going to attempt to resist making changes for the time being and hope to not fall too far behind or get priced out of possible changes.

Unless he looks likely to drop, I would hold for a week. It will be much easier to move him out with 2FT next week than be limited to anyone at the same price or below Fullkrug.

    Anything to be done here?
Finished with 44 points.. not great at all.
    No need to panic right?
And certainly no need to WC?

    Sels
    Porro - Neco - Diouf
Salah - Writz - Palmer - Rutter- Rogers
Pedro - Watkins

Dubravka - Kroupi Jr - Andersen - Rodon

      • 10 Years

I got 49 with a similar situation. I don't see the need for a WC in your side or mine. All/Most of your players got their expected role, though I would say Pedro is probably high on my watchlist.

I would be super interested in seeing how you go next week, I could easily see you completely flipping your GW1 rank with a top 1m weekly rank.

      No

But I’d play Andersen over Diouf as think neither will keep CS but Andersen will get to 2 DC points

Last Man Standing Update (1488 teams)

Waiting for the FPL site to fully update but provisionally the results are

    Safety score = 41
Top score = Joe Daly 98

75 teams to be removed, 1413 teams through to GW2.

Aiming for next lot of new entries after GW3 to replace the 200+ teams that will be out by then.

            Definitely

Game for his confidence to bag some goals, be silly to put him on bench after 60 mins vs United. But only expect him to play 60-70 mins again

No. Hold your FT and next week when you have 2 FT, you will have way more options. SUN are not going to be anywhere near as good as they were this week on a regular basis, and Mayenda has real minutes competition as it stands.
