Arsenal kicked off their season with a 1-0 win over Manchester United, but it wasn’t the easiest of debuts for Viktor Gyokeres (£9.0m).

We’ve got the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from this match in our latest Scout Notes article.

GYOKERES DEBUT

It’s still very early days for Gyokeres, but it was a tough start for the Swede at Old Trafford.

There were no shots or chances created during his time on the pitch, which lasted just under an hour before he was replaced by Kai Havertz (£7.5m).

He worked hard and did show flashes, but also misplaced five of his nine passes and looked a bit rusty throughout.

You’d think next week against Leeds United will be different, however.

“He did a lot of things very good. You can tell, especially in our high pressing, the rhythm that we demand, especially in the first half, we’re giving a bit too much time. It’s something that we have to work on, especially there. And then in the final situation, he didn’t have that many chances to do that because, as I said, on the previous action before we had to play that last ball that the line was standing still with 40 metres behind, we managed to put the ball through to exploit his quality. But overall, coming away to Manchester United, winning your first game with Arsenal, it’s a good start.” – Mikel Arteta on Viktor Gyokeres

Bukayo Saka (£10.0m) was the only Arsenal attacker to complete the match, but he had to wait until second-half injury time to record his only shot, which was blocked.

He created just one chance, too.

Plenty of room for improvement, then.

ANOTHER CORNER GOAL / RAYA + CALAFIORI IMPRESS

Arsenal won this match thanks to Declan Rice’s (£6.5m) first-half corner.

It’s no surprise: The Gunners have netted 31 Premier League goals from such situations since the start of the 2023/24 season, at least 11 more than anyone else.

With Andre Onana (£5.0m) dropped, Altay Bayindir (£5.0m) got the nod in goal for United, but he made a mess of Rice’s pinpoint delivery, gifting Riccardo Calafiori (£5.5m) the winner.

The Italian, who was deployed at left-back in place of the benched Myles Lewis-Skelly (£5.5m), made a strong case to start again in Gameweek 2.

“He has the capacity to change the energy. He comes in this room and he changes the energy in the room, he changes the energy in the team. He has an aura, he has a presence that is special. And then he’s a player that is very unpredictable for the opponent because he can occupy very different spaces, he can do things in and around your box, in the middle, in the opposition box, that is very difficult to predict. So, very happy with him.” – Mikel Arteta on Riccardo Calafiori

Once ahead, it was typical Arsenal, as they sat deep and defended the box, which obviously blunted the attacking output of Gyokeres and co.

“The way everybody tried, the defence was phenomenal.” – Mikel Arteta

The Gunners were indebted to some fine David Raya (£5.5m) saves, however, with seven over the course of the match.

Three members of the first XI picked up defensive contribution (DefCon) points, too:

MBEUMO + CUNHA PROMISE

The fact that Raya was Arsenal’s best player says a lot about how this match went, and there were plenty of positives for Ruben Amorim to take.

Indeed, United had the better chances at Old Trafford, they just couldn’t score.

The Portuguese’ first XI featured two of his new attacking recruits in Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) and Matheus Cunha (£8.0m).

The pair combined for nine shots (five for Mbeumo, four for Cunha) and caused plenty of problems for William Saliba (£6.0m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£6.0m), who aren’t easily unsettled.

With Mason Mount (£6.0m) playing off the left, Cunha led the line and would have scored if not for a superb Raya save.

As for Mbeumo, nearly everything seemed to be going through him at one point, and he looked like a major threat. He also took a few corners and free-kicks from the right.

“Everybody can understand they are very good players for that position. It didn’t need a lot of work to feel that is their position.” – Ruben Amorim on Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha

Still, United arguably lacked a focal point, with Cunha often looking to drop deeper into the pockets.

That should improve once Benjamin Sesko (£7.5m) settles, having been handed 25 minutes off the bench on Sunday.

“We were more aggressive than last year. We sprint more. We were braver. We let one against one all the game. We pressed high. And then with the ball, we have quality. Even when the stadium makes some sounds, we continue to play the way we play. We lost fewer balls in the build-up, compared to last year, was [where] we struggled a lot. And then the small things that we talk about in the beginning of this season, that players like Cunha, like Bryan [Mbeumo], in one moment can elevate the stadium. So, I think the most important thing, we were not boring.” – Ruben Amorim

Elsewhere, Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) wasn’t at his best but did create a match-high five chances and almost hit the DefCon bonus (11).

Wing-back Patrick Dorgu (£4.5m) attempted a couple of shots and struck the outside of the post in the first half, whereas Amad Diallo (£6.5m) was benched in favour of Diogo Dalot (£4.5m) on the other flank, as Amorim chose to adopt a more cautious approach at the outset.

United visit Craven Cottage next but then host newly-promoted Burnley in Gameweek 3, so expect interest in their attackers to quickly ramp up, even if the overall outlook is a bit of a mixed bag.

Real advertising is dead. I was a copywriter for 15 years.

Something needs to change soon. If AI keep taking jobs, there won't be enough to go around. Meanwhile businesses are essentially getting free labour and getting richer and richer. Maybe they need to pay the AI a salary which goes to the government or something. No idea how you'd enforce it though...

      Morning chaps.

GW1 + 73 points. Quite happy but unhappy enough to play a WC:

      1 mil ITB for emergencies

      Sanchez.
      Saliba. Cucurella. Dorgu.
      Gakpo. Saka(c). Reindeer. Semenyo.
      Haaland. Wood. Semenyo.

      Dub. Cash. Reinaldo. PM Sarr.

It was mainly to swap Salah for Haaland, I already had the top scorers bar wood and semenyo and semenyo's fixtures look great.

Want to bring in Mbeumo for Saka gw3

Thoughts (bar why WC so early).

Cheers brother. Yup Boomo (c) V Burnley. No doubt something else will be needed though.

No villa is a worry but Watkins was pish and as a lifelong Chelsea fan I can't see me rushing for attacking assets anytime soon. Looked dire albeit they'll be against a relegated Brentford next. We'll see.

Tried the Salah/Haaland double with WC - offers zero flexibility. Maybe later in season, but big Erling for fixtures and for now.

Had RAN, but swapped to Saliba. WC's are effing awesome.

I'm WCing as well. I want to get onboard the template team while I'm ahead so I don't have to use a team of differentials later on to try to catch up. Don't fancy Palmer against Westham?

Not if it was an all out BB tailored for the first week to get ahead. Now get settled in with a template team that everyone has, makes it difficult to gain points.

Tosin to Esteve this week to allow for Fullkrug > JSL next week. I won't do it until Friday, but in theory GTG?

      Sels
      Milenkovic / Esteve / Porro
      Palmer / Wirtz / Gakpo / Reijnders
      Haaland / Fullkrug / Watkins

      Verbruggen / Dewsbury-Hall / Diouf / Konsa

Gone Mbeumo as a differential, guy was a menace against us and would have scored if he was up against a worse keeper than Raya.

        Risky but could pay off.
Anyone but Bruno is a risk. Even Amad who I thought was nailed didn’t start.
Then when Sesko gets his minutes you have Cunha Boomo and Mount vying for two spots. Even Amad can be played in that 10 role

Yeah definitely could. I’m no expert. Just going off what I’ve observed preseason. But basically too much uncertainty for me, so I’m on Bruno til we see a pattern.

Me too, but Casemiro is clearly the odd man out again so I think Mount shifting there makes the most sense.

I just saw him fall over a bit when he got the ball taken off him. But maybe we’re looking for different things. Casemiro is Maguire part 2 ; needs getting rid asap

If the two teams swapped keepers before the match it would have been a blood bath for Arsenal. Remarkable match. Didn't expect such an improvement from Manchester United so quickly.

Mbeumo looks a great choice. It'll be interesting to see how Cunha and Mbeumo will connect with Sesko. I wonder who get the lion's share of chances.

        Who has Kelleher as keeper?
I had Dubravka set for Sunderland but not too confident bout that fixture anymore…

Replace Kelleher or waste of transfer?

I have Kelleher and Dubravka. I'm keeping for now. It's way too early to make a judgement.

Brentford keepers were great for save points last year, and Kelleher is a very good shot stopper. I want to observe for another couple of weeks.

Reijnders was so good yesterday. Does anyone think he might be nailed with everyone fit? He played higher up the pitch but can he also play as a defensive midfielder pairing with the inverted full back? Higher up the pitch the competition is quite tough, feels like he might get a random benching from time to time.

Still can see him getting 0 minutes before important CL game. It's Pep. And they still have Cherki, Kovacic, Gundogan, B. Silva and Nunes who can play there (and probably Foden and Marmoush as well).

            4. Moon Dog
                7 months, 19 days ago

He will get benched now and again for sure. Not often a Pep player plays more that 2500 mins over a season. And the likes of Rodri, Kovacic, Gundogan, Bernardo, Cherki, Marmoush, Foden are all quality players. But at 5.6m I'm not sure that matters. I'm mad at myself for not starting with him.

Had he blanked and Wirtz scored and assisted, we wouldn't have this discussion. However, odd 90 minutes bencing isn't a problem. Easy to have bench cover. 1 pt cameos are bigger worry, but at that price I bought him. Not perfect start to the season, but Anderson wasn't bad either and these things happen. Being stubborn isn't a virtue in this game.

Ollie Watkins, an ex Brentford player of course, scored in both league matches against them last season. The winner at Brentford, a penalty in a 3-1 victory at Villa Park.

The previous season he also scored in both matches against them, two at home and one away.

And the year before he scored in the home meeting.

So in other words, he’s scored in 5 of his last 6 matches v next weekend’s opponents, including the four most recent meetings.

              Horses for courses……

Saka has looked kind of meh since pre-season (didn't he also finish last season pretty badly, FPL wise?) and Haaland is back to being a goal maching it seems.

I don't think you can have Mo, Haaland, Palmer and Saka without butchering the team completely.

No I think people are overreacting to Saka and Palmer blanks. This was a carbon copy of arsenal matches at old Trafford underground arteta past few seasons even during arsenal's high scoring spells

The price difference is too much and having those two plus one of Haaland/Salah will always get u a top captaincy option every week

Saka has looked off the pace since his hamstring surgery tbf - it's not just based on yesterday. Doesn't bode well however that Luke Shaw of all players, a man who used to have Saka-themed nightmares, managed to pocket him quite easily.

Yeah U could be right. He got goals Vs psg real but his overall play wasn't great. Remains to be seen if this will continue

Next two games Vs Leeds and pool will be more useful to judge though. Arteta as usual overly defensive at old Trafford. Expect him to be more attacking next two

I would get Truffert rather than Diakite. Looks pretty attacking & if you're looking for DCs, RAN got plenty in the same position (Hoever is absolutely hopeless). Estève feels very underwhelming on FH; maybe Raya - Roefs so you can upgrade him to someone like Chalobah/Lacroix

Thanks for the response. Yeah Truffert put in some great crosses against Liverpool so it's a toss up between him and Diakete. Diakete scored 13 goals in the last 3 seasons in Ligue 1 so that is just swaying it for me. I have 0.5ITB to upgrade Esteve. I might take a punt on Acheampong and have a backup or as you said downgrade Raya to Sanchez maybe and get Chalobah.

Yes. I think it’s the ridiculous number of adverts.

i've even tried to pause my adblocker and Bitedefender anti everything for this site but not really any noticeable change...Just very frustrating. Try loading the fixture ticker from the members area. Will be GW3 before the f'ing thing loads.

Seven PL (and therefore FPL) debutants have scored so far this gameweek, the second highest number in the history of the league.

Could be higher still after tonight.

Didn't hear him mentioned once in preseason, but a 4.5 keeper with a CS already plus Burnley away and Brentford at home next looks interesting.

How many chips used in the top 10k? Livefpl.net won't load for me.

In gameweek 1 wouldn't be surprised if all top 10K used a chip to get there.

For the first time in my 500 years of playing this game I used a chip in gameweek 1 to shake things up. Especially this year because I have 2 BBs to waste.

Kind of brutal to think for the same price I could have had Haaland + Kudus (23) instead of Gyokores + Palmer (4).

You know Palmer outscores Kudus GW2 and most GWs, right?

Maybe. He looked toothless yesterday and will probably drop in price if he blanks again

Yes but Palmer and gyok now have the easier fixture week so can't judge.
