As part of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) early-season tradition, a frantic number of transfers are being completed in the build-up to Gameweek 2.

Based on form, injuries, suspensions and upcoming fixtures, managers are frantically switching players around.

Buy, keep or sell? FPL transfer trends ahead of Gameweek 2

Above: As of Tuesday afternoon, the most bought (left) and most sold (right) players heading into Gameweek 2

But whether it’s a good idea or not is a different matter. Looking at this week’s most popular ins and outs, let’s pick out a couple of players who are good to buy, keep and sell in preparation for Gameweek 2.

Tijani Reijnders (£5.6m)

FPL notes: Reijnders

£46.5m summer signing Reijnders already began in over 1.8 million squads, but that could reach three million by Friday’s deadline.

Hype escalated for the Dutchman once he scored twice in Manchester City’s final friendly. But in Gameweek 1, his Premier League debut ended with a goal and an assist against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 10-point masterclass featured five penalty area touches, too.

Early opinions say that he could end up making a mockery of his original £5.5m price tag if Man City return to their usual standards and he gets close to last season’s 15 goals and five assists (in all competitions) at AC Milan.

In fact, his 77 shots ranked among Serie A’s top 10 players. Reijnders will likely be used in various roles by Pep Guardiola, but this one is clearly working.

VERDICT: BUY

Antoine Semenyo (£7.1m)

FPL Gameweek 2 early Scout Picks: Three double-ups 5

Beforehand, Friday night’s opener at Anfield saw Bournemouth’s Semenyo punish Liverpool’s defence on two occasions. He collected 15 points, one short of May’s Gameweek 38 brace versus Leicester City.

Ending last season as the second-best individual for box touches (212) and number three for goal attempts (125), the attacker was frustrating to own at times.

But the Cherries’ great fixtures between Gameweeks 2 and 7 rank third on our Ticker – a run of four home games, plus a trip to Leeds United, beginning at home to last-placed Wolves.

VERDICT: BUY

Florian Wirtz (£8.5m)

Liverpool v Bournemouth team news: Ekitike, Wirtz, Frimpong + Kerkez start

The scramble to buy one of those means that Wirtz is currently the most sold.

There’s been so much excitement over his arrival from Leverkusen and meeting such hype feels difficult. Sure enough, Friday seemed fairly quiet – although the 22-year-old shot once and set up three others, accumulating 0.42 expected goal involvement (xGI).

We think Wirtz could still become an FPL bargain and managers should keep faith beyond tricky matches against Newcastle United and Arsenal.

After all, pre-season brought one goal and three assists.

VERDICT: KEEP

Ezri Konsa (£4.5m)

FPL notes: How many matches Konsa will miss + 1

Speaking of Newcastle, they kept Aston Villa very quiet in Saturday’s 0-0 stalemate. Their hosts lacked threat, albeit the final half an hour had to be played with 10 men, thanks to Konsa’s red card.

The centre-back pulled back a clean through Anthony Gordon (£7.5m) and will therefore miss Gameweek 2’s trip to former club Brentford.

Unless you’re a very unlucky manager who is already struggling to field three defenders, it’s probably worth keeping Konsa for Villa’s subsequent run against Crystal Palace, Everton, Sunderland, Fulham and Burnley. It’s hard to ignore.

VERDICT: KEEP

Alexander Isak (£10.5m)

FPL notes: What did Howe say about Isak absence? 2

Whereas this one is possibly too easy. Almost 850,000 began the season with Isak, despite the star centre-forward refusing to play until he leaves the Magpies for Liverpool.

Yet it’s never looked like the champions were serious about making a realistic bid; it’s more been about unsettling a rival.

Right now, the chances of Isak staying on Tyneside are quite high, but things could always change. It certainly feels like the majority of Newcastle staff, players and fans want this petulant figure gone.

But regardless of where the Swedish international ends up, there’ll need to be several weeks of training to build match fitness. He’s not currently an FPL option.

VERDICT: SELL

Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m)

FPL Gameweek 25 differentials: Trossard, Huijsen + Bowen 1

Finally, perhaps selling a nailed-on talisman, someone who needs no Premier League adaptation, is an overreaction.

Three of Bowen’s last four seasons have brought in over 180 points and he looked bright in pre-season, forming a decent partnership with Niclas Fullkrug (£6.0m).

However, West Ham United looked absolutely woeful in their 3-0 humbling at Sunderland. Up next are Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur.

VERDICT: SELL

Do you agree or disagree with these conclusions? Feel free to leave a comment below about who to buy or sell before Gameweek 2.

Why do you have it in your mind to build the 5 transfers? You have a specific plan or you just like the flexibility that comes with having so many FT’s?

Also he seems to be making it clear he won’t go to Liverpool to sit on the bench so will be getting assurances on that if he does go.

Konate didn’t look great at the weekend either so I think he probably does start alongside VVD.

Problem with that is you'll have to play one (or more) of Esteve, Rodon, King or Guiu every week, which won't give you that many points at all. Perhaps go Palmer to Saka to upgrade one of your £4m defenders to a £4.5m one.

Sorry, I don't like that team.

Listened to a CC video yesterday with a WC team, just to find out he is recommending basically an identical team to mine, except he has four at the back. I'm doomed lol.

I bet the useless players I had in GW1 haul also haul in GW2, its so predictable. Pedro, Bowen, Watkins, Palmer, Bruno etc.

I know people chase previous points, but the amount of people I’ve seen taking hits or wildcarding to bring in Ballard, Senenyo, Reijnders, Wood or Ekitike is genuinely madness!

        1. Semenyo and Woods were already draft considerations based on last season's point totals. price and fixtures. It was only Forest's pre-season goalscoring form without Elanga that was concerning. Either might be worth a free transfer if you started without.

        2. Reijnders' value and pre-season was sufficient for me to have him from the start. Again probably worth a FT

        3. Ekitike I thought could wait until GW4. Not worth a hit to avoid the price increase.

        4. Sunderland fixtures are good so if you're going to own Ballard the time is now. I won't now that his price is risen..

Its amazing how much pre-season form trolled people. Now I know that pre-season form is often a trap, but its not always, and does give you a good clue on who to pick. This season however, I never saw anything like it. Basically every player who did well in pre-season flopped in GW1, like Bowen, Watkins, Pedro etc. And the ones who had bad pre-seasons, like Wood, hauled. Its very bizarre.

It is a game of skill but with a lot of variance, as is the nature of football. If it were pure luck every player would have massive inconsistency in their final rank every year. How do certain players finish inside the top 100k (or lower!) every year? Why are some players consistently significantly better than the majority?

    4. x.jim.x
      • 11 Years
      6 months, 18 days ago

There are players who had good preseasons and did well too - Gakpo, Haaland, Reijnders, etc. It's been one gameweek.

In reality, and I remember saying this a few times over the past couple of weeks - preseason means nothing beyond monitoring fitness levels and positional information. Form and performance means absolutely nothing.

For the Salah and no Haaland teams. Are we just captaining Salah? Alternatives are Watkins and Palmer, or do Palmer to Saka and captain him. Think I would just stick to Salah for now. Remember captaining Palmer over Salah last season when he had Newcastle away and he scored two goals.

You've already got Salah, Gakpo and Ekitike and 3+ transfers. Would you be tempted to bring in Guehi and Isak and have 5 Liverpool players for a bit? Their next premier league fixture isn't until 2 weeks after the deadline and Liverpool's next 2 fixtures are Burnley and Everton!

I’d wait and see what comes out of the international break in terms of injuries and rumours and starting line ups eyc

No - can't see Isak starting consistently until nearly October in that scenario and I wouldn't bet on Guehi to start.

Gakpo, Ekitike and Isak almost certainly would not be all playing together. So no.

If you've got 5 pool players it ties your hands for transfers, so no.

I started the season without Salah or Holland. This week I had to sell Wirtz to create a Liverpool space to get Salah in, plus Palmer to Mbeumo to free up funds. Next week might be Watkins or Bowen out, or both…! Thoughts?

You don't really want to know my thoughts.

If you already know you want Salah, why didn’t you just start with him?

You took a hit to get Salah in before Newcastle (A) and Arsenal (H) and sold Palmer before WHU? And now you're thinking of selling Watkins who has one of the most favourable fixture runs until GW7? That doesn't sound good to me.

You brought the wrong player in.

If U didn't start with Salah, U have to go without him for the first 3 weeks

That's what my thinking was at least. The easiest game is already out of the way and anything less than a double digit haul was a success. Now fewer people will be captaining him (and opposition will be rougher) so odds are you're better off going without him for next two

Getting him now makes no sense

Saka could haul, but he might not, Palmer plays an awful West Ham defence in the meantime. Expect Leeds to attempt the most viceous of low blocks at the Emirates with Bijol maybe even joining and not replacing the likes of Strujik and Rodon. Saka could easily get trippled in defence like we've seen many times last season.

B - I have both Rutter OOP as a punt and Tijjani, but Reinjders looks like a season keeper already.

If we get a repeat of GW1 in GW2,
    Palmer, Watkins bad
    Haaland, Anderson good
I have the exact funds to do Watkins to Haaland, Palmer to Anderson!
Will require Haaland to avoid rising before the deadline!

If U could only make one of these moves which one would U go for?

    A) Wirtz > Saka (c)

    B) Pedro > Watkins (c)

Probably diouf. All will concede but he has the most attacking threat

Vdv shd get defcons but will probably concede more than 1
