An intriguing clash at the Etihad gets the day’s Premier League football underway.

Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur is Saturday’s 12.30pm BST kick-off, with this fixture being another stern test of the early progress that the visitors have made under Thomas Frank.

The Lilywhites performed admirably in their last encounter against elite opposition, running Paris Saint-Germain mightily close in the UEFA Super Cup. They had been thumped by Bayern Munich a week earlier, however.

Frank, interestingly, doesn’t go with the ‘five at the back’ set-up he used against PSG.

Many, including ourselves, thought Kevin Danso would come in for this fixture, with Brennan Johnson making way. Johnson, however, keeps his place in what looks like a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3.

The two alterations he has made were expected, at least: Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur are back after their Gameweek 1 breathers to replace Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall in midfield.

Richarlison again leads the line, with Dominic Solanke warming the bench.

Pep Guardiola has also made two changes and, like Frank, has gone more attacking than perhaps anticipated.

Rayan Cherki gets his first Premier League start since his summer move, with Omar Marmoush also coming in.

Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva drop to the bench.

Tijjani Reijnders may be slightly more curbed than last week, then, but with Rico Lewis inverting into central midfield from right-back, the Dutchman may still get the odd chance to creep forward.

Ederson is back in the squad after missing the win over Wolverhampton Wanderers through illness. He has to settle for a place on the bench, however, as James Trafford starts in goal again.

LINE-UPS

Manchester City XI: Trafford, Lewis, Stones, Dias, Ait-Nouri, Gonzalez, Reijnders, Cherki, Bobb, Marmoush, Haaland.

Subs: Ederson, Ake, Doku, Rodri, Bernardo, Nunes, O’Reilly, Khusanov, Foden.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Vicario, Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence, Sarr, Bentancur, Palhinha, Kudus, Johnson, Richarlison.

Subs: Kinsky, Danso, Vuskovic, Davies, Gray, Bergvall, Odobert, Tel, Solanke.

Spurs were class. Nice bit of bite about them. City looked like they wouldn't score if they were there all day.

7 pts from my FH team so far then, including captain. The three players who have played from my GW1 team have 27!

Romero off the bench and I’ve got Vicario. Buzzing!

That yellow card for Romero was an absolute disgrace though

a joke. this why i struggle to enjoy fpl. done nothing wrong. a loss of 4 points is pretty sizeable

It was a reckless challenge. Both linesman and ref ref knew he got the ball in that challenge by the way, was obvious. Ref still decided on a yellow.

he got the ball and didnt touch the man. haaland went off his feet with both legs and didnt get the ball in the first half and wasnt even booked. its harsh, very harsh imo

A little harsh I'd say. Always a risk with Romero!

honestly think its a reputation thing. VDV makes that tackle, ref doesn't think about it. Romero is just known as that rash tackler

Pep won't last long this season I reckon.
Could be 9 pts behind after the Arsenal game in GW5.

Funny how people bandwagoned on City assets after the wolves match. Now they got trashed by Spurs at home.
Staying away from City attacking players, too much rotation. Foden should take the number 10 role and replace KDB who is clearly missing.

When fit he is terrific. He was really good in the middle last season.

He's only one player. There's a bit of the fair weather footballer about him. Was brilliant when City were very good. Reijnders also being touted for the De Bruyne 'role'. Neither of them fit to lace De Bruyne's boots in that position but both very good players. Rodri fully fit and menacing will be crucial for City success. Doku, for me, under Pep's tactics, is a one trick pony. Too predictable. It's too early to rule City out.

Thinking I may do Palmer and KDH to Mbeumo/Cunha and Gordon this week. Leaning more towards Mbeumo as he might be more on the end of things. Thoughts?

Already have Bruno. And would obviously wait until all games are played.
