Gameweek 14 of MLS Fantasy is here, and once again, we’ve asked our experts to reveal the teams they’re backing ahead of the deadline.

In this article, several experienced managers share their current squads, along with their thinking around key decisions for the round.

NOTES

  • Overall, I’m pretty happy with how my squad looks heading into Round 13. That said, I still have a couple of priority transfer targets. One of the main names on my radar is Anders Dreyer, who is starting to find form at the perfect time ahead of two home fixtures before the World Cup break. Bringing Dreyer in will require me to free up some funds elsewhere.
  • Because of that, Wiki Carmona and/or Jesús Ferreira are currently likely additions to the squad, with both players benefiting from favourable home fixtures against Chicago Fire and LA Galaxy respectively. I’m also considering an Austin FC forward as an alternative to Ferreira.
  • Seattle also look capable of producing returns at both ends of the pitch this week. Because of that, I’m strongly considering a move for Nouhou Tolo in place of Noel Caliskan.

NOTES

  • In goal, I’m planning to make a luxury transfer by bringing in Andrew Thomas to replace Duran Ferree. San Diego FC’s fixtures are starting to turn, while the return of CJ Dos Santos also creates a slight risk around Ferree’s starting spot.
  • Defensively, I really like the look of Kye Rowles from DC United this week. Petola also stands out as a cheaper option, especially given how advanced his role can become at times. I’m also very interested in Joseph Rosales, who faces Sporting Kansas City in a strong fixture. He’s listed as a defender but often plays much higher up the pitch, which only adds to his appeal. The final defensive spot still feels very open though, with plenty of strong options under consideration.
  • In midfield, Pep Biel was firmly on my radar. However, there’s still a small concern around his availability because of his current injury issue. Because of that, I’ve currently opted for Wilfried Zaha, who gets a very favourable matchup against Toronto FC.
  • Up front, Myrto Uzuni is set to come in for Gabriel Pec as a one-week punt.

NOTES

  • Week 13 delivered 82 points and a small red arrow, which drops me down to an overall rank of 137.
  • There’s one change in goal this week. Andrew Thomas keeps his place, while JT Marcinkowski makes way for Brian Schwake of Nashville SC.
  • At the back, Harbor Miller drops out for Nashville defender Maxwell Woledzi. The rest of the defence stays unchanged, with Silvan Hefti, Mathías Laborda, Anthony Markanich, and Alex Roldán all keeping their places.
  • There’s also one midfield change this round, as Facundo Torres comes in for Carles Gil. Torres faces a Sporting Kansas City side that continue to concede heavily, especially away from home.
  • The rest of midfield is made up of Evander, Guilherme, Nico Fernández, and Rodrigo De Paul.
  • Up front, I’m backing the in-form Martín Ojeda alongside Hugo Cuypers of Chicago Fire.
  • Meanwhile, Lionel Messi comfortably keeps his place once again after continuing to deliver strong returns almost every week.
  • Captaincy will start on Cuypers.

NOTES

  • I had a disappointing midweek round, scoring 82 points and dropping 16 places overall.
  • In goal, I’ll stick with Andrew Thomas and Brian Schwake for another week. Both play at home against the LA sides, who have struggled badly for form in recent matches.
  • Defence is where I’m most likely to make a change. My punt on Efraín Morales didn’t pay off, so I’m now planning to move him on for a Charlotte FC defender. Charlotte have a very favourable home fixture against a Toronto FC side that hasn’t won since the start of April.
  • The midfield should remain unchanged this round. Both Diego Luna and Guilherme were rotated during the midweek matches, so I expect them to return to the starting lineups this weekend.
  • Elsewhere, Marco Reus is in danger of leaving my squad because of a difficult away fixture against Seattle Sounders. Right now, Rodrigo De Paul is the leading candidate to replace him, especially with Inter Miami about to begin a strong run of home fixtures.
  • Up front, Hugo Cuypers has continued to deliver steady returns over the last few weeks. However, I’m very tempted by the form of Martín Ojeda, who looks increasingly difficult to ignore right now. Meanwhile, both Lionel Messi and Gabriel Pec are expected to keep their places in my squad.

NOTES

  • After a small green arrow last week, I’ve moved back into the top 10 overall. My strategy this round will look very similar to last week, which means I’ll once again heavily target Sporting Kansas City.
  • The main focus is a triple-up on Austin FC. I’m bringing in Joseph Rosales, Facundo Torres, and Myrto Uzuni. That gives me defensive coverage alongside plenty of attacking upside. Rosales looks especially appealing because he’s listed as a defender despite often playing as both a wide midfielder and centrally.
  • My other two transfers are Jackson Ragen, mainly to target the fixture against LA Galaxy, and Pep Biel, who looks very appealing in what could be a high-scoring game against Toronto FC. Biel continues to sit at the heart of everything Charlotte create in attack.
  • Making way are both LA Galaxy players, Mauricio Cuevas and Gabriel Pec. I don’t like the Seattle Sounders fixture for them this week, and overall Galaxy have struggled badly for consistency all season.
  • Elsewhere, Mbekezeli Mbokazi will likely leave my team because of growing rotation concerns following the midweek MLS Open Cup matches.
  • I’m also planning to move on from Joaquín Pereyra of Minnesota United. With James Rodríguez now gone, Pereyra should dominate set pieces and remains nailed in the starting XI. However, I simply don’t like the fixture enough this week to keep him.
  • The final planned exit is Kristoffer Velde, which feels like a fairly straightforward move with his side facing Inter Miami this round.
