In this article, five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman shares his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) tips ahead of the 2026/27 season.

How to use our Rate My Team tool to get your FPL squad rated

1. PLAY YOUR OWN GAME

Firstly, I’d say ‘play your own game’.

In the early weeks, player recommendations are often short-sighted. They probably won’t consider your chip strategy, either.

So, try to avoid getting drawn into FOMO, whilst always keeping your own team’s approach firmly in mind.

2. HAVE A PLAN…

FPL 2026/27 chip strategy guide

Planning is always key in FPL, especially after the introduction of ‘double chips’ in 2025/26.

Now is the time to lock in that early chip strategy, which will then help narrow down your pool of viable player picks.

For example, if you are on a Bench Boost 2 approach, you’ll likely own a £4.0m Coventry City defender for their home encounter with Hull City, so that’s one slot sorted.

Alternatively, if you intend to Wildcard in Gameweek 4, you could potentially steer clear of Chelsea assets initially.

3. … BUT DON’T LOOK TOO FAR AHEAD

But this season, I’m not looking too far ahead with my planning.

Gameweeks 1-3 are my primary focus, but the maximum I’d look at is the first five Gameweeks, given the three-week international break that follows.

In the past, I’ve always had a much longer outlook. However, a good start in FPL feels more important than ever nowadays, given how competitive it is.

4. ROLL TRANSFERS WHEN YOU CAN

Having transfers banked can be a real advantage, as it gives you added flexibility.

Just because you have a transfer, it doesn’t mean you have to use it, so I’d try and accumulate as many as you realistically can as quickly as possible.

At the start, I’d try not to pencil future transfers in either; it rarely goes to plan.

5. AVOID MINUTES RISKS

Palmer, Rayan, Rice: Buy, keep or sell in Gameweek 27? 8

There are loads of really tempting picks for Gameweek 1, but try and limit the amount of minutes risks in your team.

Christos Tzolis (£6.5m) is in fine pre-season form for Arsenal, with one goal and four assists in four friendly matches. He subsequently looks well placed to start against Coventry next Friday, and could do very well. Beyond that, however, there is quite a bit of uncertainty, especially with a tricky trip to Villa Park in Gameweek 2 and the transfer window still open.

If you choose to take a punt on Tzolis, I think that’s fine, but I’d pair him with players like Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Dominik Szoboszlai (£7.0m), who are reliable starters with solid xMins.

While taking calculated punts is important in FPL, overloading your squad with too many risky picks initially will likely cause problems further down the line, i.e. forced transfers or a Wildcard.

This also applies to players who are late back from the World Cup. If they don’t get sufficient playing time ahead of Gameweek 1, either in a pre-season friendly or the Community Shield, I’d avoid them.

6. INFORMATION IS KEY

Soaking up as much information as possible each week is really important.

Watch games, read the post-match analysis/interviews just to check if there are angles you might have overlooked, and certainly keep up to date with all the team news – a lot can change over the course of a week, particularly when there’s midweek football on.

The later you make a transfer, the more information you have.

Although it’s tempting to act quickly when a price change is imminent, in most cases, it’s probably better to ride it out.

7. PAY ATTENTION TO PRE-SEASON

FPL pre-season: 10

In pre-season, I think we can learn a lot about teams/managers.

It’s not about the results, nor the players really, but it can offer valuable insights into how each manager plans to set up.

It could be especially important this season, given the influx of new head coaches.

Already in pre-season, we’ve seen Enzo Maresca start to build a system that focuses on wingers, with Antoine Semenyo (£8.5m) one of the standout performers.

Andoni Iraola’s 4-2-3-1 should accommodate Florian Wirtz (£7.5m) as a No 10.

Xabi Alonso, on the other hand, played with wing-backs in a back three over the weekend, a system he successfully used to secure the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen in 2024. Additionally, they netted two goals from corners after the appointment of new set-piece coach Austin MacPhee, so his methods could have an immediate impact.

8. LOOK FOR FIXTURE OPPORTUNITIES

Sit down, look at the Fixture Ticker and identify when teams are worth investing in.

Manchester United and Liverpool both have decent early runs, but further down the line, Chelsea kick off a really nice sequence of fixtures in Gameweek 4:

Beyond that, Fulham face the three newly-promoted teams in succession from Gameweek 6.

Bournemouth’s run in Gameweeks 9-15 could be the time to pounce on their assets, too:

9. KNOW YOUR SET-PIECE/PENALTY TAKERS

Set-pieces are more important than ever now, so understanding which players are taking corners and free-kicks is crucial.

It’s one of the reasons why Szoboszlai is so popular right now, with four of his six goals in 2025/26 from direct free-kicks.

Penalty takers carry even more appeal, so monitoring early developments and reacting to them could be key.

10. DEFCON PROJECTIONS

Best Senesi replacements in FPL 13

Finally, a quick work on defensive contributions (DefCon), and the fact that last season’s output isn’t necessarily a projection of future DefCons.

Marcos Senesi (£6.0m), for example, was the number one defender for DefCon points in 2025/26.

He’s subsequently risen to £6.0m, but has since switched clubs to Tottenham Hotspur, a different team with different tactics.

Many Fantasy bosses underestimate just how much will actually change this season, especially with so much manager upheaval, which could create opportunities to find value in the early weeks.

      its a different game now.

Content creators all pushing certain things means the game has changed and its all about EO and Chip strategy

For example with the early BB this season - This makes me want to go against it and try and use it later on when we have some more info.

Bench boost early also means more points on the pitch with a stronger eleven.... it's not about the immediate bonus points from the chip it's more about the bigger amount of points you will get with your future starting players

I'm not in a rush to blow my chips so here's what I'm thinking. Bruno (c) looks very tasty indeed for GW's 1 & 2 but isn't quite so palatable for a wee while afterwards. Haaland (c) isn't droolworthy until GW3 and then he'll be the captain of choice in GW5. So, why not just bank GW2's transfer, swap them about in GW3, captain Pedro (HUL) in GW4 (when United and City play each other) and then decide overly a long, leisurely, IB wildcard which one to keep.

Having both is easily achievable of course but you can only captain one of them at a time and compiling a team without one or the other is a bit like being a kid in a sweetie shop.

Yes , on similar strategy here, 2FT's to get Haaland week 3.

But week 4 is ideal for FH. Then WC at some point from IB onwards.

That's a good plan on paper but it's booking in transfers - what if Bruno is smashing it- still selling him? What if you get an injury to a key player? What if Cole Palmer looks essential for GW4? I would start with both and not lock yourself in too much

      1. FPL_trail_runner

FH4 covers all that. Plus a squad with players who can easily play with injuries. Bruno away to Everton is fine to miss out on for Haaland triple captain

booking in 2 transfers is very risky, it relies on nothing else changing between GW1 and Gw3 which is very unlikely

Aston Villa, Chelsea, Leeds, Arsenal, Sunderland, Liverpool, and Manchester City within Brighton's first 9 GWs, by that time the Conference League would have been in full swing, and Brighton only had 3 penalties awarded to them all season last season, so not guaranteed to get penalties here. Plus, Gross is 35 as well...

35 yet played every minute of every game when he came back last season. Hurzeler does not rotate Gross. I've seen him play a lot, in person, so am happy with him in my team. Different strokes for different folks though of course.

Brighton weren't in Europe this season, this season they are, where Conference League matches occur on Thursday, in an amongst all the other domestic cup competitions. You cannot play a 35 year-old midfielder week-in-week-out, there will have to be some rotation.

He's not a terrible pick - as others have said, there are plenty of positives with Gross. Most notably his price for what he offers.

I'm starting to think though that he may not be the best option to start with, considering they have 2 European fixtures to play and will rotate. Plus I'm considering a BB in GW2 and think there's better players to go for than Gross who plays Chelsea away in GW2 a few days after a European tie.

I'm deliberating the same with money ITB

      Raya
      Shaw - Gvardiol - Calafiori
      Tzolis - Mbuemo - Wirtz - Foden
      DCL - Haaland - JP

BB - Verbruggen - Norgaard (or Gomez) - Diop - Canvot

I could upgrade Norgaard to a 7m but then it messes up the structure, ie when I want to use transfers in week 4 I'd want to keep a cheap bench, upgrade Tzolis or Foden/Wirtz if not performing, Shaw up to Colwill or something.

I know it doesn't feel right not spending the money, but could come in very handy when all our plans fall apart after the first week

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results and I'm guessing a lot of his current owners are doing exactly that. Sure, players can have a poor season and bounce back but I don't think 25/26 was a particularly poor season for him. He had 23 returns in the Bundesliga in 24/25 and I posted this time last year that he would do well to get half of that in the much more competitive EPL. He only got 9 (ln four fewer games) so what you saw is what you'll probably get from him.

It’s not „over and over” though is it?

Many players struggle in their first season in PL plus Liverpool as w whole was underwhelming last year.

Personally I don’t mind taking a punt on Wirtz playing as nr10 l, linking up with Isak for just 7.5m

Speaking of short memories, do you remember when he won Bundesliga player of the season over the likes of Harry Kane? There are a multitude of reasons why he was below-par last season, many of which are no longer factors. Sure, he may never be as good in the prem as he was in the Bundesliga, but is it crazy to think he'll rediscover at least a bit of that form? Besides, doing well at FPL requires picking the right players before they explode, not after.

Historically the Arsenal defence is going to regress and the injuries to Saliba and Timber are not going to help matters. After Coventry the early fixtures aren’t great either.

Ben White if he can stay fit as it's unlikely Timber will be available for the first few weeks.

Calafiori there's the worry that he'll rotate with Hincapie or he'll get subbed off the wrong side of 60 mis.

Calafiori if he manages to stay fit. Neither Tzolis or Martinelli are particularly good at beating their man 1v 1, so they'll require attacking support on the left. On the other hand, as long as Timber is out, White is by far the better pick than Mosquera, considering possession based teams give their defenders less of a chance for defensive contirbutions.

That extra 0.5m is a killer for me although I've got him in the Fan Team game along with Henderson. They're both 4.5m on there and rotate admirably.

This is the thing. Keeper is really the only position you can genuinely get a good nailed on starter for £4.5m

This is my Haaland team, but I need to see at least 60 minutes from him in the CC.
Pretty happy with the balance. Any obvious weaknesses? No chips planned yet with this team.

    Kinsky (4.0 GK)
    Calafiori * Ballard * Shaw (Muharemovic * O’Shea)
Bruno F. * Mbuemo * Wirtz * Tzolis (Slater or Hughes)
    Haaland * JP * DCL

Saw that Lewis-Skelly could potentially move to United and briefly thought what a great asset... until I remembered he was now a midfielder and I cannot see him supplanting Dorgu on the left.

Not playing any chips immediately, so looking for suggestions on how to improve this bench, within budget (17.5m):

    Dubravka (4.0) - Nørgaard (5.0) - Cash (4.5) - Thomas (4.0)

Worries around a leaky Liverpool defence, defcon feeling more reliable than attaching returns for defenders and no guarantee he'll be back to his best now that he's back under Iraola.

I think he will be worth getting, but am very unlikely to go there from GW1. Can wait and see for a couple of weeks and if he is looking a big threat can move then.

If your going very early wild card then it looks good. Otherwise, Timber's return and Mun being in the market for a left back will cause you some big problems with only two 4.0 defenders for back up

Thoughts on my FPL team? Any obvious weaknesses or changes you’d make?
Quite happy with the balance, but interested to hear what you’d change before GW1. Would you downgrade anywhere to strengthen another position?

    GK: Kinsky
    DEF: N. Williams – Calafiori – Gvardiol – Maguire
MID: Mbeumo – Foden – Wirtz – Saka
    ATT: Isak – Haaland

    Bench:
    GK: Palmer
    MID: Groß
    FWD: Destan
    DEF: van Ewijk

    1. Raoul Nogues
      2 hours, 11 mins ago

If you have faith in Gross and would play him I would downgrade Saka to another 5.5 midfield to allow Calafiori/Foden to Gabriel/Semenyo

I think Saka is a risk to start, limited playing time for pre season, competition from madueke means less minutes in season and also injury risk so his minutes maybe managed anyway

I wouldn't feel safe starting Saka as, even if he is fit, I think Arteta will protect him for the long season with plenty of early subs or even rests.

If you back him to start and play 80+ against Coventry though, then you'll be well ahead of the game after GW1
