Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is just two days away – and we’ve got a comprehensive guide to the best players for defensive contribution (DefCon) points to bring you.

It comes courtesy of Tom Hadley, a former world number one in FPL, and who will be providing data-driven articles for Fantasy Football Scout throughout 2026/27.

This article is an in-depth look into which players offer the most potential value at each price point, chiefly focusing on the players that typically excel at accumulating DefCon points.

I’ll also take a look at bonus point magnets at the bottom of this piece.

DefCon Leaders: Defenders

The most notable talking point ahead of this season is the fact that the vast majority of the best-performing DefCon assets from last season have either changed team or changed manager. This adds a degree of uncertainty to predicting the nature of this season.

Not only that, but the majority of top performers have received a price increase, too.

So, my current thinking is perhaps to instead gamble on a few new potential DefCon gems.

Immediately, the £5.0m bracket looks like the sweet spot. I think there is so much potential at that price across the board.

VUSKOVIC + MUHAREMOVIC

Best £5.0m defenders for FPL 2026/27

It is new boys Luka Vuskovic and Tarik Muharemovic (both £5.0m) who really catch my eye, both boasting extremely impressive DEFCON numbers and attacking data from their previous clubs.

I’m very keen just to go straight into the season with these two players. I think the upside is potentially huge, and they could match those star men from last season who are now in the £6.0m bracket.

Muharemovic looks to be by far the safer pick of the two. He was straight into the left side of the Leeds back three and seamlessly settled in over pre-season (not to mention his bicycle kick goal!). Leeds look even stronger defensively with the addition of James Trafford (£5.0m), and I can also see Muharemovic chipping in with some attacking returns.

Vuskovic, on the other hand, may not be a week-to-week starter at first. However, the fact that he started the last two friendlies gives me a lot more confidence in his likelihood of a start in Gameweek 1, at least.

The upside with Vuskovic looks huge. He hit DefCon in just 60 minutes in the last friendly and has already had a couple of good chances from corners in pre-season. His goal record from centre back is incredible for his age (17 goals in 91 games). I’d be shocked if we don’t see a good few big hauls from him this season! This is the main reason why I’m likely to just risk him from the off.

Of course, all of these promising numbers may not translate to FPL; I just believe it could be worth just taking the gamble for the huge potential upside. There is an early Wildcard as cover, and a lot of people will likely be using that chip in the opening six Gameweeks regardless.

Which defenders had the highest floor score last season?

This is an important consideration in DefCon.

Players may repeatedly hit the defensive contribution threshold but if they concede significantly or get booked a lot, it slowly loses its value. Look at Maxime Esteve last season: 38 DefCon points but a shortage of shut-outs meant he averaged a miserable 2.5 points per game.

4+ points is the dream target for all defenders. Either a simple clean sheet, an attacking return, or DefCon points with just one goal conceded.

Dan Ballard (£5.0m) and Jaka Bijol (£4.5m) posted quite remarkable numbers from last year, particularly in home games. They’re names to consider if you’re planning a player rotation that involves a lot of home matches.

The Bournemouth defence was ridiculously consistent across the board, but this one maybe needs a bit of time to see how the new manager gets on.

We have the perfect entry point for Bournemouth assets, too, in Gameweek 7 (or on a Wildcard just before that). Adrien Truffert (£5.5m) and James Hill (£5.5m) are very much on my watchlist until then. They could still offer tremendous value, even with price rises, should they replicate the numbers from last season.

Defenders who hit DefCon whilst keeping a clean sheet

I’m not taking the newcomers reputations until proven we’ve been here before.

Sticking with proven players until others emerge.

I’m coming around to dropping DCL until GW4.

Nice team. I’d move funds from Semenyo or Wirtz to the defence, though.

That was my tought process. Dont necessarily like his first few fixtures

Plan is to start with a strong midfield, switch to defcon defenders in GW 4 or 5 when more data is available.

People losing their sweet, sweet minds not getting Haaland in their teams. The man is as essential as it gets, made even easier by there not being Salah this year to cause that particular headache here.

    Kinsky - Grob - Tomas - V Ewijk

Two names not seeing much airtime on here:

    A. De Cuyper (4.5m) - to start GW1, 3 & 4 (possibly as an OOP winger)

    B. Jacob Ramsey (5.0m) - should be a starting Newcastle mid, with some goals/assists in the past

    Thoughts?

    Kinsky, Rushworth
Frimpong, Kerkez, Shaw, Mykolenko, van Ewejk
Mbeumo, B. Fernandes, Tzolis, le Fee, Gomez
    Haaland, Isak, Simms

Planned 2 transfers after week 2 for MU midfielder and Coventry player to add ManC and Chelsea cover . WC after week 5 if needed.

funny how just an increase of 1 defcon per 90 can put the hit rate up circa 20%

hope vvd can get that 1 extra on average under iraola

      • 16 Years

What's your thoughts on VVD? Alternative to ZSobo? Scored similar last yr.

      1. F4L
        • 11 Years
        3 hours, 27 mins ago

i dont think vvd's score this season will be too dis-similar to last. 10 cs all season isnt exactly a high bar and i know he scored an all time high of 6 goals, but take 2 away from him and give him and extra 10-14 defcon points and it levels out

the thing with iraola, i know people say its very attacking, but at times last season bournemouth arguably looked the second best defensive side in the league, started very strong, went downhill abit but then hill came in and it all shored up. i think it is realistic to hope for a 1 clean sheet every 3, at least long term when iraola has settled in. i have no intention of WC'ing early this season so happy to start with vvd. iraola just needs to get the whole team working for him defensively, if he can do that i expect them to be solid enough

szobo i think could outscore vvd though tbh, i know people caveat his defcon numbers last season with him playing rb, but if you look at scott's numbers in this article they are off the chart good and if szobo can be iraola's new scott in that sense but have abit more attacking flair you'd expect szobo's ppg to be pushing 5. especially if he can keep some set-piece duties. this is all on the assumption that iraola comes in and liverpool's matches have much more turnovers in possession compared to last season with slot's slower style. will help vvd, but i think it might actually help szobo's defcons slightly more as an 8. in truth if szobo is a 90 minute man and his defcon numbers do indeed get that boost, he'll only need 12-ish attacking returns and then you're already at 4.5+ppg

as you can tell though i have very high hopes for liverpool this season, so maybe abit biased! got vvd and isak currently. if not sure on liverpool i'd wait and see though, just while iraola gets the players up to the level of fitness he wants

Interested in thoughts on this GW1 team and early chip strategy...

    GW1:

    Lammens
    Hume - Mykolenko - Calafiori
    Mbeumo - Szoboszlai - Bruno - Ndiaye
    Calvert-Lewin - Haaland (C) - João Pedro

Rushworth, Le Fée, Van Ewijk, Thomas

    Plan is:

GW2: Bench Boost with the Coventry boys plus Le Fée

GW3: Potential FH if I can't improve the team enough with the 2 FTs. (Initial thoughts could be Mbeumo -> Semenyo and Calafiori -> a decent £4.5m defender.)

    GW4: Wildcard

Any comments or ideas much appreciated. Cheers!

The question is whether it's worth the effort for that. I'd be amazed if all 15 start gw2 with 0 transfers.

Fair point, although I don't think I'm sacrificing much to set it up. Van Ewijk and Thomas are £4.0m enablers I'd be happy owning anyway, Le Fée is a genuine starting option.

So the upside is a very targeted BB against Hull at home without really compromising the Haaland/Bruno core. If GW1 throws up a benching or injury I can reassess, but that risk applies to any early BB

    Minimal Maintenance League

Build once. Maintain for 38 weeks. Transfer never.

Can you build an FPL squad in August that you can still live with in May?

I am setting up a minimum maintenance league for the 2026/27 season.

    The concept is simple:
Pick your 15 players for GW1. Once the GW1 deadline passes, those 15 players are yours for the entire season.

No transfers. No Wildcards. No transfer market to bail you out.

    THE RULES

    Locked and Prohibited:
    - Your squad is locked
    - No transfers all season
    - No Wildcard
    - No Free Hit
    - No Bench Boost
    - No Triple Captain

    Allowed Management:
    Every Gameweek you can:
    - Change your starting XI
    - Change formation
    - Change captain
    - Change vice-captain
    - Change bench order
    - Make normal substitutions between your XI and bench
    - Receive automatic substitutions

So this is not traditional set-and-forget. Your 15 players are deadlocked, but your management decisions are not. You still have 38 Gameweeks of captaincy, selection, and formation decisions.

    THE CHALLENGE

How good are you at building a squad that can survive an entire season without:
    - Panic transfers after an injury
    - Knee-jerk purchases after one good game
    - Wildcard rescue
    - Chasing last week's points
    - Rebuilding your team every few weeks

Your GW1 squad has to do the heavy lifting. Your GW1 squad equals your GW38 squad.

    FORMAT

    - Classic scoring
    - Free to enter
    - Just for fun
    - Bragging rights only
    - No money or prizes
    - Open to anyone who fancies a different FPL challenge

I will keep a record of the GW1 squads and monitor the league for transfers and chips. If you make a transfer or use a prohibited chip, you are out.

Everything else — formation, starting XI, captain, vice, and bench management — is permitted.

just Thiaw on the bench now for cover/rotation. will just need to keep the captaincy as close as possible to 6ppg to survive/thrive

really looking forward to this fpl season 🙂
