Captain Sensible

With the Gameweek 1 deadline of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) just hours away, it’s time to have a good think about who to captain.

Most FPL managers face a tough decision between the two highest-scoring players in 2025/26, Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) – but those two aren’t the only candidates for the armband.

On the opening weekend, Manchester United travel to Hull City, while Manchester City host Bournemouth. Defending champions Arsenal enjoy an appealing home fixture against Coventry City, while Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea will fancy their chances away at Fulham.

So, following City’s disappointing performance in last Sunday’s Community Shield, is it time to look away from Haaland and target the newly promoted Tigers, or do we even look outside of Manchester?

That’s what we’re considering in the first ‘Captain Sensible’ article of the season.

In this piece, we will assess the on-site captaincy poll, analyse myriad player and team statistics, consult the Rate My Team (RMT) points projections, and settle on a top three for the armband, ahead of Friday’s 6.30pm BST deadline.

Captaincy Poll

In stark contrast to the majority of Gameweeks last season, there is a genuine contest at the top of the Fantasy Football Scout captaincy poll. Haaland currently sits in first place on around 34% of the vote, while Bruno Fernandes boasts the backing of 27% of site users.

In third place is Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) with just over 10% of the vote share. The Cameroon international has been in fine form during pre-season, scoring three goals and featuring regularly up front in the absence of Benjamin Sesko (£7.0m).

Elsewhere, two other players have managed to garner more than 5% support: Community Shield bandwagon Christos Tzolis (£6.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£8.0m). The former has seen his ownership increase significantly since Sunday.

How on Earth are City making a 60mil profit on Savinho. He only scored 2 Prem goals. Had Spurs' pants down with this deal.

Aren't they overpaying on Savinho and underpaying on Marmoush to avoid the 15% profit to Frankfurt. That's the rumour anyway. City and Spurs save a few £m each.

      Anyway, Savinho is pants.

Understand #THFC will pay #MCFC £15m extra for Savinho which is a part of the Omar Marmoush transfer fee due to Eintracht Frankfurt’s sell on fee included in Marmoush’s City contract. This fee means City will profit on Marmoush and is why negotiations have stalled.

Spurs have 12 hours to sign one of the players to be available for #PL opener vs Brentford on Saturday. More to follow

50/50 haha no my plan is an early wildcard, especially if haaland goes off and looks anything like his best, then I can address that situation, between him getting injured and other players returning from injury I don't know how secure Hel be,

I'm looking at Wildcard GW4-6ish. So I think White is a good pick. Nice value, more likely than Calif to play either 90 or 0. Seems to be good DC, maybe an assist. Konsa surely will need minimum 2 weeks before he is starting games in a new team with no pre season. And I think it is more likely he comes in for Mosquera, who I just don't rate at all.

      Schade.

I am only slightly doubtful on Schade's minutes with the new signings. I am thinking between Ndiyae and Schade - first one on pens but slight doubt if he is leaving Everton still.

I have had Gross and Gomez for a while and yesterday gave me quite a headache.

The match was quite a surprise for me - could not have thought that Gross would play 90 and overall them playing a strong XI which was still probably not the full first team which made it even more confusing. Point being, absolutely no clue how that 90 impacts (old) Gross and there is new Euro game next week. Gomez played confusing 60 mins and all the guys that come in at 60 could well be the actual first teamers so Gomez's 60 could mean that he plays 60-70 as a starter in PL or that the guys that came in at 60 are the actual starters and Gomez gets only sub mins.

Where are you at with Gross and Gomez? If you are replacing, what combo? Looking at Ndiaye/Schade + Slater.

I had Gross in as back up and starter GW3 and 4. I think he should be fine for those games.

      But it has annoyed me

Yep. He is such an FPL asset though (especially if on pens) - only needs one corner assist and suddenly it means 3 bonuses on top.

Potentially one we might be overthinking. It is early in the season, maybe they wanted minutes in his legs, maybe he will be rested for 2nd leg, who knows. They will start their best team vs Villa and he is in it.

Wavering on Wirtz - do I back the open-play threat or go for a steadier, model-friendly option like Szobozlai or Ndiaye? Upside for Wirtz could be great, particularly with Forest and Ipswich in 2 and 3.

Pretty set on BBGW2. Here’s the rest of the squad.

They're all different price comparisons though, so I'd just go A

I can't get past having double Arsenal defence too tbh, I'm not panicking about Konsa right now, will deal with that situation when it arises 🙂

For the fixtures I say Bruno, look at like this most people is guna wildcard early, going off the community shield I didn't think haaland warranted him price, I didn't think he looked good enough, now Fernandes as the fixtures to hit ground running, but by chance he doesn't and haaland looks great just wildcard then bring him in
