Captain Sensible

With the Gameweek 1 deadline of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) just hours away, it’s time to have a good think about who to captain.

Most FPL managers face a tough decision between the two highest-scoring players in 2025/26, Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) – but those two aren’t the only candidates for the armband.

On the opening weekend, Manchester United travel to Hull City, while Manchester City host Bournemouth. Defending champions Arsenal enjoy an appealing home fixture against Coventry City, while Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea will fancy their chances away at Fulham.

So, following City’s disappointing performance in last Sunday’s Community Shield, is it time to look away from Haaland and target the newly promoted Tigers, or do we even look outside of Manchester?

That’s what we’re considering in the first ‘Captain Sensible’ article of the season.

In this piece, we will assess the on-site captaincy poll, analyse myriad player and team statistics, consult the Rate My Team (RMT) points projections, and settle on a top three for the armband, ahead of Friday’s 6.30pm BST deadline.

Captaincy Poll

In stark contrast to the majority of Gameweeks last season, there is a genuine contest at the top of the Fantasy Football Scout captaincy poll. Haaland currently sits in first place on around 34% of the vote, while Bruno Fernandes boasts the backing of 27% of site users.

In third place is Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) with just over 10% of the vote share. The Cameroon international has been in fine form during pre-season, scoring three goals and featuring regularly up front in the absence of Benjamin Sesko (£7.0m).

Elsewhere, two other players have managed to garner more than 5% support: Community Shield bandwagon Christos Tzolis (£6.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£8.0m). The former has seen his ownership increase significantly since Sunday.

Guehi didn't even start the CShield. I wouldn't go for him for sure.

Otherwise it looks pretty decent for a non-BB team.

It's good I guess but I'd argue somewhat low ceiling with Gross + Sangare in midfield.

I've got Szobo and Isak. I think they are going to score quite a few against us. Too many spaces between our midfield and defence, and our playing out from the back without Bruno/Tonali has been really suspect. Maybe we get some joy ourselves with pace on the wings, but I've got low expectations until the new players settle in.

Final draft time! Think the main absentees are Bruno and DCL but I’m hoping Mbeumo and Wilson can “cover” for both. I’d also rather rotate a 5m defender in than a 5m mid. Thoughts?

    Verbruggen
    Calafiori, Vuskovic, Maguire
    Semenyo, Mbeumo, Tzolis, Wilson
    Haaland, Isak, Pedro

    (Kinsky, Muharemovic, Gomez, Davis)

    1. Johnjo

I wouldn't regard DCL as an "absence" in your team. You've sacrificed Bruno in order to get Isak who should do better than DCL.

it it too risky going with J. Pedro?

    BB options:

    A: J. Pedro + Walle Egeli
    B: DCL + Brobbey

Obviously B is the better all round pick but J.Pedro ownership is scary

Seeing Jafooli’s post regarding El Nino forecasting to be particularly bad this year and the UK forecast to be very stormy reminds me of an old joke that I heard many moons ago.
Why is a Hurricane akin to a woman?
They both start off hot and wet and end up taking half your house away…

Would be surprised to see them buy 33 year old Martinez on big wages when Kinsky has been great for them recently including looking good in preseason
Ultimately this is a team that should be pushing for top 4 given the spending and getting a 4.5m starting GK from it with 'decent' fixtures is the appeal, even if I would be surprised at keeping a CS vs. Brentford in GW1

    For first two gw’s -

Hi all, I think I'm pretty settled with the below. Thoughts?
Only thing I keep thinking about is potentially downgrading Rushworth to a 4.0m dead keeper, i.e. Dubravka, which would enable me to swap Konsa for a 5.0m defender (probably Vuskovic):

    Kinsky / Rushworth
    Calafiori / Ballard / Muharemovic / Konsa / Thomas
Bruno / Szobo / Mbeumo / Tzolis / Le Fee
    Haaland / Pedro / Kusi-Asare

    (GW1 bench would be Rushworth/Konsa/Thomas/Kusi)
