Liverpool somehow salvaged a point at St James’ Park on Sunday, thanks to a late penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai (£7.0m).

Here are our Scout Notes from the game.

SZOBOSZLAI PEN

Szoboszlai, not Alexander Isak (£9.0m), smashed in a late penalty to rescue a draw for Liverpool.

Buried into the top corner, the £7.0m midfielder really couldn’t have placed his spot-kick any better.

“I was practising a lot in the pre-season, obviously we didn’t have any [penalties during the friendly games], but in training, so thanks to the second and third goalies to be there for me.” – Dominik Szoboszlai

A pressure penalty – have we got our answer about who steps up from 12 yards after Mohamed Salah’s departure?

Or was Isak perhaps spared the pressure on his return to St James’ Park?

Andoni Iraola later said…

“I think we have not only Dom [Szoboszlai] and Alexander [Isak] – we have more very good specialists. Alexis [Mac Allister] also was on the pitch and he’s a very good penalty-taker, Cody [Gakpo] – we have a lot. But I think Dom showed the level. It’s an almost impossible penalty to stop.” – Andoni Iraola

“Yeah, obviously we were all nervous but it was an incredible penalty. Top corner with the speed that he produces on the ball, I think it’s almost impossible to stop it.

Looks like, looks like [when asked if Szoboszlai is going to be the main penalty taker], but it’s not just one maybe I trust a lot themselves no and we have some specialists, some very good specialists, so sometimes they will be the ones deciding. If Dom doesn’t see himself in that moment I think we have good specialists here.” – Andoni Iraola, via beIN Sports

Decisive from the spot, Szoboszlai also had complete control over Liverpool’s set plays, taking all of the Reds’ corners and free-kicks.

Prior to his late equaliser, Cody Gakpo (£7.0m) found the bottom corner with a lovely drilled finish from outside the box.

The Dutchman racked up six shots on Sunday, the most of any player in Gameweek 1 so far, and later hit the defensive contribution (DefCon) threshold to total 12 points.

Above: Players sorted by shots in Gameweek 1, via our Stats Centre Page

ISAK + WIRTZ POOR

On his return to St James’ Park, Isak didn’t really show up.

Liverpool had 27 shots in this match, with the Sweden international involved in five of them either as the shot taker or creator.

But in front of a hostile crowd, it was a game of frustration for the most part, with a header blocked and an effort blazed over the bar from just inside the box.

“I think he expected a little bit the atmosphere, I don’t think [it] has been a big surprise for him. I think he has tried everything, has given us good positions on the ball. [He] probably has had a couple of situations to finish inside the box, but probably not the clearest that he wanted or we wanted, but I value that. He has continued pushing on in the game, fighting, and I think it’s a good step for Alex for being the first game.” – Andoni Iraola on Alexander Isak

Florian Wirtz (£7.5m), who played as part of a front two with Isak, was equally poor and hooked just after the hour mark, although he was denied by a decent early save from Lukas Hornicek (£5.0m).

Others in red disappointed, too, including both full-backs and Rio Ngumoha (£6.0m), who didn’t look comfortable at all down the right flank. His replacement, Victor Munoz (£6.0m), fared better and won the late penalty.

Defensively, Liverpool didn’t fill you with much confidence, but Jeremy Jacquet (£5.0m) generally did well before his removal in the 70th minute.

“Jeremy [Jacquet] hasn’t done a proper pre-season, so it was kind of expected he didn’t finish the game.

“All the substitutes gave us energy. We need it because it’s difficult to last the full 90 minutes with the same players the way we want to play. Players coming off the bench can affect the game.” – Andoni Iraola

WISSA SUPERB

Although they dropped two points late on, this was a really positive performance from Newcastle under new boss Matthias Jaissle.

Anthony Elanga (£6.0m) and substitute Joe Willock (£5.0m) got the goals, but Yoane Wissa (£6.0m) was the clear standout performer.

Yes, he missed a couple of big chances, but he linked up very well with Will Osula (£6.0m) from a No 10 role (see image below), looked sharp throughout and carried the ball superbly to set up Willock’s strike.

“With the new role he’s given me it’s given me a lot of confidence. I’m one of the leaders so I need to back him. Because on the pitch you can’t always hear him so I need to make sure the guys are on alert.

“The manager expects me to be a leader and lead the group. He wants me to be winning balls, making sure everyone is going forward, going for the kill, and sometimes just be calm. He wants me to keep up the energy. He wants a lot of energy and that’s the role he gave to me and I am very happy.” – Yoane Wissa on Matthias Jaissle

On this evidence, Wissa will cause plenty of problems for Tottenham Hotspur next weekend.

Indeed, both Newcastle goals on Sunday came from fast breaks, so Spurs will need to be really switched on to balls played in behind.

Elsewhere, Hornicek and Amar Dedic (£4.5m) both looked solid at the back.

Lewis Miley (£5.5m) impressed in the middle of the park, too, particularly after a limited pre-season.

BURN INJURY

Newcastle captain Dan Burn (£5.0m) is set to miss the next few weeks with an ankle injury suffered in training.

The England international had been in contention to face Liverpool but was spotted arriving at St James’ Park on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

A quick word on Osula, too.

He seemed to be struggling after a collision but battled on before finally coming off in the 56th minute.

We haven’t spotted an update thus far, although Newcastle play West Bromwich Albion in the EFL Cup in midweek, so we might hear something in Jaissle’s pre-match presser.

Still reeling for putting the wrong Sangare in my team - what an absolute fail. Would like to call it an oversight but it’s just a shocker, no excuses.

With such an important topic as Liverpool's penalty taker, we really needed Neale on this one. He would have listened to every post match-interview the players and manager did to every media outlet (Sky, MOTD, LFC Channel, post match presser etc.) for useful quotes. For instance, Szoboszlai said he had been practicing penalties, which is important information.

also, massive benching headache this gw, which I hadnt anticipated....

bruno f mbeumo wirtz tzolis hinchelwood
    haaland j pedro (walle egeli)

Too early for transfers. I have Buendia as a differential and at the moment looks like a big mistake with Arsenal as there next fixture, but they then play Hull, Forest and Spurs, so will hang tight for now.
I wouldn’t be taking a hit right now to change your team. Let things settle for a couple of weeks and then reassess.

Dont like both tbh but considering the price difference, I would prefer Gvardiol.

Gvardiol now, but O’Reilly could turn out to be the better pick longer term.

Couldn’t have had much worse a start in terms of bad decisions, had hinshelwood & de cuyper in my last draft and took them out for gross & Kadioglu on a BB1, still seething…

It stings. I did a last minute switch from Sangaré + Rodon to Gross and Kadioglu

This! Commented stating I had a gut feel for Hinshelwood and went against my gut thinking Villa was a tough opening fixture. Tripled up in United against Hull instead! Williams losing clean sheet and bonus stung too. Oh 1 week in and FPL doing its thing

GW 3 WC team BB 5 and FH 4

    Trafford - Sels
    NOR - Tarkowski - Calafiori - Thiaw - Rodon
    Cherki - Szoboslai - MGW - Ndiaye - Tzolis
    Haaland - DCL - Wissa

Insane BB 5 fixtures for this team. FH 4 helps get Chelsea.

    GW 6 - MGW + DCL ➡ Pedro + Slater
    GW 7 - Ndiaye ➡ Tavernier
    GW 8 - Wissa ➡ Thiago

So, just won’t have Pedro for ars and bre. I can live with that.

    Thoughts?

WC3 has to have Thiago, very nice fixtures. Tarkowski could wait a few weeks

I like this Brentford team and its constructed to just feed Thiago, + , I expect him to do very well, and these teams they play from 3 onwards are good to target i think
          Sun (H)
          Bou (a)
          Che (H)
          Villa (a)
          Liverpool (H)
          Hull (a)

5 of them conceeded 2xG+ at the weekend, Chelsea still to play.

I will have Thiago on FH 4

Just missing SUN, CHE, avl, LIV

Getting Thiago in WC 3 means no BB

And if no BB then I wouldn’t want to play the WC

It’s okay to go without vs Arsenal away

Just the Brentford away game to navigate

Small sacrifice to make for a BB

    I don't intend to WC3.

    If I do this plan:

    GW2: Roll
    GW3: Fernandes + Isak > Slater + Haaland
    GW4: Mbeumo > Palmer

    I end up with:

    Kinsky Rushworth
    O'Reilly Calafiori Maguire Colwill VanEwijk
    Palmer Semenyo Szoboszlai Tzolis Slater
    Haaland Pedro Wissa

That's pretty much a WC4. Triple City from GW3 vs COV, triple Chelsea from GW4 vs HUL. Like what's left? Maguire > Konsa (can do for a hit if price changes make these moves unviable) maybe and that's it. That team can last the long term.

Looks decent but early signs would be low on Semenyo and possible Palmer (lets see but i expect him deep and creative and Rogers to play next to Pedro).

I did a quick draft to see what id like for WC3 into 4, always coming on same players. Your draft is close but again could be a drab loss of points each week where you never get fully going as it looks always good enough but not great.

      WC3

      Verb
      Calafiori Ajer Rodon Vuskovic NOR
      Szob Sangare Cherki* MGW Ndiaye
      Thiago Haaland Pedro

      *becomes Rogers week 4

Something like this, perhaps Tarkowski for NOR week 5 and Saka + Tzolis both in week 6 perhaps

Chelsea home, Sun and Brighton away. I will probably have Tzolis if he isnt rotated. But there is a case to have 1 short term based on fixtures and then flip to 3 from week 6 onwards. All up in the air currently.

I can go Rogers over Palmer depending on which looks better. I don't think that WC3 is objectively better than what I have. I think my plan is still WC6 or maybe even later depending on when my guys start dropping off/injuries hit.

I like Wissa, Colwill and Semenyo. The first two are low-owned and come into really good fixtures from GW4 onwards. Semenyo is a 90 min man which Cherki just isn't.

Anyone manage a worse score than 29 (with only Pedro to come)?!

Only one week but GW1 failure always stings more because you’ve had everyone who hauls in alternative drafts (Szob, White, Sangare, Nidaye in my case).

Pinning my hopes on a triple Coventry bench boost to bounce back 🙂

With so much tinkering done by all of us in the weeks leading up to the start we all owned the guys who hauled and most of them were swapped out for the blankers. Nothing new there. But it’s only a week in a 38 week season so so would’ve let it bothered you.

43 for me and I went without Bruno and Haaland to afford a 15 strong bench boost and ended up with half my squad scoring 1, 0, 1, 0, 2, 2, 2, 0, 2.

Only Raya, Gabriel(c), Calafiori and Szsobozlai returning.

      Rogers and JP tonight.

Foden probably the one to bench here? Probably a bit more doubt around starting given Cherki's performance

    Kinsky
    Maguire White Calafiori NOR
    Mbeumo Tzolis Szobo Rogers
    Haaland JP
    Verbruggen Foden Barry Davis

    FH2 continues to be tempting.
Villa destroyed down the right back side and Saka looking on it (Tzolis + Saka),
Mbuemo the only decent united attacker last week
Haaland unlucky not to get returns, 7 touches in box, 2 decent chances, palace with injured cb

Would go for this if playing it:
    Lammens
    Ballard Calafiori VVD NOR
    Tzolis Saka mBeumo Szob
    Haaland (c) Pedro

Tweaked the WC 3 team a little. Actually Thiago in 3 is a great pickup. SUN at home can’t be ignored.

    Hornicek - Trafford
    NOR - Konsa - Mykolenko - Aina - Rodon - Semenyo - Szoboslai - Ndiaye - MGW - Tzolis
    Haaland - Thiago - Wissa

Great BB 5. FH IN 4.

    GW 6 - Wissa + MGW + Aina ➡ Calafiori + Pedro + Slater
    GW 7 - Ndiaye ➡ Tavernier

If Konsa doesn’t start GW 2, then will just have Cherki over Semenyo and Calafiori over Konsa.

Great BB 5. Great FH 4. Great GW 3 team as well.

Long term plans of getting Vuskovic + Hinshelwood in 10 and Hill in 9.

    Thoughts? 🙂

      Verb 4mil
Cala Konsa VVD Rodon O Reilly
Semenyo +1mil) Sangare N Diaye MGW Szob
      Pedro Haaland 4,5

1.5mil in bank to cover 1mil up to Palmer week 4 (Saka longterm) + 0,5mil for price changes
