Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who have yet to play their Triple Captain chip have a choice to make: use it on Cole Palmer (£9.6m) – or another Chelsea asset – in Gameweek 4, or save it for later.

Let’s have a look at the pros and cons of backing Palmer this weekend.

This article features data and screenshots from our new FPL Toolkit.

PROS

Thiago, Palmer v Rogers, sell Man Utd players? FPL Q&A

THE FIXTURE

The visit of Hull City perhaps doesn’t look as favourable as it did a few weeks prior, yet it remains a home match against newly-promoted opposition.

Although Sergej Jakirovic’s men are yet to concede, both Aston Villa and Manchester United have generated more than 1.8 expected goals (xG) in their respective matches with the Tigers.

Furthermore, Palmer is projected to score 7.7 points by Rate My Team (RMT) in this fixture:

That’s the most of any player until Erling Haaland (£15.5m) faces Ipswich Town and Hull (more on that later).

ALONSO HAS CHELSEA FIRING

It’s not just the fixture, however.

Chelsea’s attack looks completely rejuvenated under Xabi Alonso.

The Blues are already the division’s joint-top scorers, with eight goals in three matches:

That’s despite coming up against Arsenal and Brighton and Hove Albion, two of the top three teams for fewest goals conceded in 2025/26.

In terms of underlying data, Chelsea sit fifth for non-penalty expected goals (NPxG), with 5.56.

SOLID STATS/SET PLAY BOOST

Palmer has bounced back under Alonso.

With more freedom to drift around the pitch, he’s scored two goals and supplied one assist in three matches.

In that time, he has taken the third-most shots of any player (12), behind only Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Haaland.

In a further boost, Palmer is also on penalties, plus a share of set plays.

Austin MacPhee’s choreographed set-pieces look dangerous, too.

GOOD XMINS

With Palmer resting up over the summer and Chelsea not in Europe, it means he is unlikely to be rotated or subbed off early.

Indeed, the 24-year-old is averaging 87.3 minutes per start across the first three Gameweeks.

Chelsea play Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday this week, but they’ve only been in EFL Cup action in midweek. Palmer was, encouragingly, limited to 45 minutes in the cup – and he scored twice!

LOW-ISH OWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Palmer is only the 12th most-selected player in FPL, with 22.3% ownership.

It will naturally increase as we approach Saturday’s deadline, but compared to Haaland (71.2% ownership) and Fernandes (46.1% ownership), it certainly amplifies the potential impact of the Triple Captain chip.

Joao Pedro’s (£7.7m) effective ownership will likely exceed Palmer’s, too, so there’s no denying its power if he does haul.

THE CONS

Who were the cheapest starting players in FPL Gameweek 1? 9

HULL’S DEFENSIVE STRUCTURE

Hull are unbeaten and yet to concede a goal after three Gameweeks.

Is this fixture perhaps less one-sided than we initially thought, then?

Comfortable without the ball, the Tigers certainly have the defensive structure to frustrate Chelsea.

Notably, in their first two matches, when they scored seven goals against Fulham and Brighton, Alonso’s men averaged only 32.6% possession.

Quite a few of their goals have arrived from fast breaks, too, so they’ll potentially have to find new ways to break down Hull’s deep defensive block on Saturday.

GAMEWEEK 16 BETTER?

You could argue that there is a better Gameweek to use the Triple Captain chip.

You might prefer a Haaland home fixture, for example.

The Norwegian plays Ipswich in Gameweek 7 and Hull in Gameweek 16. Rate My Team has both of these matches as the best Triple Captain opportunities in the first half of the season.

  • Haaland v Hull (h): Gameweek 16 (8.21 projected points)
  • Haaland v Ipswich (h): Gameweek 7 (7.94 projected points)
  • Palmer v Hull (h): Gameweek 4 (7.73 projected points)
  • Saka v Hull (h): Gameweek 10 (7.47 projected points)
  • Fernandes v Coventry (h): Gameweek 14 (7.39 projected points

We don’t know what condition Haaland will be in by Gameweek 16, of course.

In the lead-up to the Ipswich match, Manchester City will also face Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.

But even if this puts you off, there are alternatives to consider outside of Haaland and Palmer. You might even want to Triple Captain someone no one else is.

LACK OF INFORMATION

Another potential issue is that we’ve only seen three Gameweeks of action.

Might a few more weeks of analysis be useful, just to learn more about teams like Fulham, Crystal Palace etc?

Fulham have looked shaky defensively in their first three matches under Alvaro Arbeloa, while Palace have already conceded eight times, the joint-most of any team.

If these defensive trends continue, it could throw up further Triple Captain opportunities, such as Haaland at home to Fulham in Gameweek 11.

FINAL WORD

FPL notes: Another Palmer pen, Cucurella injury + why Calvert-Lewin missed out

Palmer and Chelsea have made a really positive start to the season.

So have Hull, of course.

Waiting for another Triple Captain opportunity further down the line is perfectly viable, then.

On the other hand, although Hull haven’t conceded a goal in their first three matches, they rank 15th for non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC), with 5.05, so they have been aided by some luck in certain situations.

Indeed, in their match against Aston Villa on Saturday, a team that is yet to score this season, Unai Emery’s men created a couple of very decent opportunities, which are captured below.

In addition, we don’t yet know how Hull will react when they fall behind.

Will they have to adopt a slightly more adventurous approach, potentially leaving space for Palmer and co to exploit?

Certainly, if you want to strike early rather than wait for later, when Enzo Maresca may choose to rotate Haaland during busy periods, this fixture looks like a good one to attack. In FPL, ‘better the devil you know’ isn’t a bad mantra.

If you don’t own Palmer, you could, of course, consider using the Triple Captain on Joao Pedro. However, without penalties, free-kicks or corners, he has fewer routes to scoring points.

Current team (1) vs potential WC team (2) below. Should I WC and if so is triple ARS defence and triple CHE attack a good plan?

    (1)

    Raya
    Califiori - Konsa - Ayer
    Bruno - Mbuemo - Szobo - Foden
    Haaland - J Pedro - DCL

4.0 GK, Diop, Slater, Van Ewjik

    (2)

    Raya
    Califiori - Konsa - Ayer
    Palmer - Rogers - Mbuemo - Szobo - MGW
    Haaland - J Pedro

4.0 GK, Thomas, Egan, 4.5 FWD

As for the whether to WC this week or not... it so really depends on whether you think cherries go big against Hull. If they do, with no Rogers or Palmer, you're missing out. But you have Szob vs Fulham already, and Bruno and Mbuemo to cash in against Fulham next week. I don't think you're making enough changes to be written a WC personally, exorcism if you can get from Foden to Rogers with FTs

Raya and Cali only Arse defenders you have?

Wondering because if you do this, most(if not all) of the managers ahead of you will have double or triple Arse def. So you will be in a disadvantage there.

Sold Odegaard on wildcard laat week and couldn't regret it more. Thoughts on these transfers:

    1. Cherki, Sangare, De Cuyper - Odegaard, Szoboszlai, Konsa (-4)
    2. Cherki, Sangare, Hall - Odegaard, Gakpo, Konsa (-4)
    3. Sangare, Hall - Odegaard, Thomas
    4. Roll

    Current team:

    Verbruggen Steele
De Cuyper Calafiori Hall Egan Diop

      honestly, I would roll.

Can't react to things every week so sometimes it's best to take the error on the chin and give it a week or two to reassess. Sangare for example might suddenly score well again but you've taken him out.

Yeah you are almost certainly right. Had Odegaard in my wc in a 352 till just before the deadline, when i shifted to 343 with Wissa instead. Brutal decision. I hate this game, lol.

This was your WC team last week no? You've already decided you don't like it?

I'd just hold and roll probably. I still like Cherki. Think people are ditching too soon. The only pick from those I don't like much is Sangare but he's probably fine to keep unless he gets hooked at half time regularly.

Personally I prefer not being all in on the chelsea triple so I would say B in that scenario.

I’m thinking the same. I initially had Bruno and Roger’s in, FOMO with how consistent Bruno is was worrying, especially since it’s against City too for a rivalry.

With Palmers performance last night I just gave in lmao.

It’s frustrating because he’s had points taken away. Definitely has a haul coming. Personally as I’m on wildcard I’m just going to go Barcola as a differential for fun. Gakpo’s flagged.

I've posted this before, just looking for further opinions after last nights games. The consensus has been to stick with what I've got, but it feels like it could be season ending if Chelsea maul Hull and Liverpool turnover Fulham. My only cover at present is Pedro and Szo

    A) Free Hit (hoping to hold WC to IB)
    B) Roll (4 players in Manchester derby)
    C) Make one transfer (e.g. Bruno to Palmer or Mbeumo to Rogers - would like both against Fulham though)

Thanks for the valuable input. What I meant to imply was that it could easily be a 30+ point swing which would be difficult to claw back, but it's a little more wordy, and maybe not "dramatic" enough...

      Hmmm interesting

If you have 0.6 ITB I’d go Foden to Rogers but am assuming that’s not an option.

FH might work, but I wouldn’t pick Gakpo because of injury concerns, and if you don’t have the money for Wirtz then you’d probably have to get Szoboslai, which means you’re only actually changing half your current team. So maybe the answer is roll. I think I wouldn’t worry too much about having lots of Manchester derby because they’re all attackers and they can all score goals in that game. Well, maybe except for Foden who can’t seem to hit a barn door right now despite excellent underlying numbers…

        • 10 Years

Thanks for your input, appreciated. 0 itb unfortunately.

I could downgrade keeper on FH to get Wirtz, but I honestly think Szo is the best option if Gakpo is out. Foden is a worry that he may not start.

        It comes down to (keeper / def negligible);
        Palmer vs Bruno
        Rogers vs Mbeumo
        Odegaard vs Foden
        Isak vs DCL

City were going to wreck Coventry, but here we are

Would have been nice if you showed your bench here. The one guy I'd definitely lose is the rotating Foden pillar, but that's a hit for Rogers by downgrading someone on your bench

I haven't seen an indication from either team this season of a clean sheet in the Manchester derby, fwiw. You don't have defenders in it, so enjoy the points from an open game

Keep Mbeumo with his consistent goal threat, imo

So it's Bruno to Palmer, hit for Foden to Rogers, or just roll FT and cap Pedro because he's been really consistent and involved

Thanks for your input. Bench is fodder so no value to gain there - Dubravka, Dedic, Thomas, Slater.

Due to Rogers being 7.6, no easy way to shift Foden to him. Cpt is on Pedro, vc Haaland at present.

      Yes it's insane imo.

This week's fixture is good but next week will you feel as good when the fixture reads Brentford away?

Tempted by Wirtz on the free hit? Or go Szobo Munoz or Gakpo?

      Probably not Gakpo...

      Iraola on Gakpo

"I don't know [if he will be back for Fulham].

I hope so, but I don't know. He doesn't have a proper injury, but he finished with niggles in both of the adductors the other day.

"We expected to have him for today, [but] it hasn't been possible. It's not a big thing, but the problem is we play here [again] in two days and a half.

No way I would make the move Bruno > Palmer.
Bruno could easily match or even surpass as I think Manchester derby will be an open game.

C because of Fulham GW5. Can you downgrade somewhere else and upgrade a City mid to Palmer?

    A) Henderson / Kinsky + Wirtz

    B) Henderson / Kinsky + Odegaard

    C) Alison + Odegaard

So TC Palmer this week? Or wait and risk a Haaland benching later on?

Not sure Arbeloa will be in the job by GW11 unfortunately so don’t know if that fixture will still be good by then so it’s just Ipswich, which seems prime for rotation, or Hull, which is a long way away…

It seems sort of like a good idea, but I am mildly concerned by Palmer’s comparatively low xGI so far this season, only 1.4 compared to 2+ for Pedro and Rogers. I know pens might help but there’s no guarantee Chelsea get one…

    Any thoughts?

I’m heavily tempted by Pedro with a proper midweek rest think he’ll be on fire..

Just play it on Palmer, might not get a better opportunity.

If Haaland was guaranteed to start vs Ipswich, I'd wait till then, but from the managers comments he is going to rest him at some point and that would be a perfect opportunity.

The way Chelsea have been attacking, surely Hull can't keep another cs, so Palmer or even Pedro could do very well for TC this week.
