Saido Berahino bags a brace as West Brom sweep aside newly-crowned champions Chelsea at the Hawthorns. Chris Brunt is also amongst the goals, whilst Cesc Fabregas sees red as the Blues lose for only the third time this term.

Blues pay the penalty for complacency

Chelsea fell to a comprehensive 3-0 defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion as their 16-match unbeaten run came crashing to an end. Despite suggesting he would field a number of young players at the Hawthorns, Jose Mourinho made just three alterations to his starting XI, drafting in Diego Costa, Gary Cahill and Nemanja Matic in place of Kurt Zouma, John Obi Mikel and Willian.

Costa’s inclusion came as a slight surprise given that Mourinho previously stated he would only field the Spain international again this campaign if the Blues were in desperate need of his services. The Portuguese boss clearly deemed him fit enough to start and was vindicated when Costa came through his 63-minute stint unscathed. Spearheading the champions’ attack – with Loic Remy shifted out to the right flank – Costa looked rusty on his return and couldn’t fashion a single attempt on goal.

Mourinho resisted the temptation to rest Eden Hazard for the Baggies encounter, maintaining the Belgian livewire’s 100% appearance record in the league. Hazard drew a blank for the second successive fixture following Chelsea’s title win, yet the London club’s home tie against Sunderland on the final day should convince owners to keep faith with the PFA Player of the Year.

Cesc Fabregas’ 30% ownership were left bemused when the deep-lying playmaker kicked the ball into a congregation of West Brom players – hitting Chris Brunt on the back of the head – during a break in play. Fabregas was awarded a red card for the bizarre incident and will now sit out the Black Cats tie in addition to the first two matches of next season. His absence could persuade owners to reinvest the funds from his sale and recruit one of Manchester City’s high-priced in-form midfielder (Yaya Toure and David Silva) ahead of their home clash against Southampton.

The Blues have now conceded four times and scored once since clinching the title and with Mourinho admitting his side have eased off since securing the trophy, some may even consider swapping out their Chelsea assets, with the Blues showing little motivation in last night’s lacklustre display.

Berahino nets brace in Baggies triumph

Having been recalled to the side in place of Victor Anichebe, Saido Berahino netted for the first time in eight starts, including a second-half spot-kick. Chris Brunt scored the hosts’ third of the night with a rasping near-post shot that Thibaut Courtois arguably should have dealt with better. The Northern Irish midfielder is enjoying a strong finish to the campaign, with one goal and four assists in six starts, and is clearly enjoying his move back into midfield, with Joleon Lescott fielded at left-back again.

The Baggies’ defence continues to impress under Tony Pulis’ governance, following their fourth clean sheet in five outings. Impressively, the midlands side have also kept out United, Liverpool and Palace over that period. Tony Pulis’ men face an uphill in their attempt to secure another shut-out on the final day when they travel to the Emirates. That being said, the fact that the Gunners failed to score in their past two home encounters offers some reason for optimism. On the flip side, Arsenal’s recent formidable defensive record at home (two goals conceded in five) does limit out interest in Berahino despite his upturn in form.

compare the average and then highest points total in any given week. i would say there is always a very slim chance up to about 80 points assuming you have different 11s

I fell for the trap and drafted garbutt in last week and to make matters worse for some unknown reason had mcshane ahead of dawson on bench. I suck.

That's pretty unlucky, especially as Garbutt came off the bench for Baines when he got injured the week before. I'd probably have had McShane ahead of Dawson as well given their respective fixtures.

Why? They're safe. I would be surprised if Sherwood risked him with the FA cup coming up. Could see Weimann/Sinclair getting a start along side Agbonlahor

They need a win for confidence before the FA cup final. Losing 6-1 then playing a second string side will lose any form they had going in to the final. Benteke is a form player, and Sherwood knows it. The more he plays the better.

28pts from 11 puts me 40pts behind ML leader. A bad GW, with 4 to play but only one differential - Giroud.

Next week I need Skrtel, Hazard and Giroud to score 6 goals between them.

Thinking of taking a punt in midfield for this week. 80 points ahead in my cash ML so fancy a flutter.

    Midfielder options, Henderson > ?

    A) Puncheon (H v SWA)

    B) Young (A v HULL)

    C) Mahrez (H v QPR)

I was also wondering why there was so much love for Lukaku? Home to Spurs isn't the best fixture regardless of how poor Spurs might be right now. Lukaku hasn't really hit the heights has he?.

    Predictions for next season:

Soton defenders are going to be in the 6.0 6.5 bracket
Sig, Mane and especially Kane and Berb are going to get big price hikes.

See anyone going down in price that might be worth a look?

Do you think we'll see any rule changes?

How much is a wildcard worth? At the start of the season would you sell yours for 20 pts? 30? 40?

This being my first season I badly messed up both of my wildcards. I used the first in Wk 4 but failed to use it to increase my team value. Poor planning meant I was also forced to take a 12 pt hit in Wk 10 and another 8 pt hit in Wk 11. My winter wildcard team actually scored considerably less than if I hadn't used it at all.

There seems to be 3 reasonable strategies.

1/ Use the wildcard early to increase team value.

2/ Save it for a double game week.

3/ Use it when you need to.

I quite like strategy 1. Prices move more at the start of the season and the extra team value is useful for the whole season. The downside is you've used your get out of jail free card and if things go wrong you might have to take quite a few hits to get back on track. Another factor is what algorithm FPL use for price changes. If they tighten it up this strategy basically becomes redundant.

I personally think strategy 2 is overrated. Admittedly my experience is very limited but i've managed to negotiate this season's DGWs with just a bit of forward planning and a hit or two. AS a hit taken to bring in a DGW player is effectively only a -2 anyway I struggle to see the appeal.

I've never had a full rack of DGW players but what i've lost on my rivals who did, i've caught up in the next week or so as they've had to take hits or persevere with non optimal lineups in order to fix their unbalanced teams. In addition because DGWs happen later in the season you are not going to increase team value and may well lose money.

A lot also depends on the quality of the DGW. However even in an extreme example where you have to exchange 10 players to get in all the DGWers you want that is effectively only a 20 pt hit. This begs the question I asked earlier; “Would you sell your wildcard for 20 pts?”

Strategy 3 seems sensible. Use it when you need it, what could be wrong with that? Then again if you took a 20 pt hit you’d have 6 transfers. How often is you team that bad? Admittedly you may also be able to increase your team value with a wildcard which you wouldn’t with a 20 pt hit.

My own strategy for next season is to be flexible. I am planning on an early wildcard to increase my team value but if I get a good start I’ll switch to strategy 3. If things stay good I’ll go for a DGW wildcard.

I always start the season hoping to save it for the doubles near the end but always end up having to use it in the first few weeks because my team sucks balls...

Use it when you need to. I didnt need to use it until recently so I used it for the double. Sold Siggy and Mane to get in Sterling and Ozil. So wildcard was probably worth negative points 🙂

Sounds like you used it for 3 and then regretted it. 1 doesn't always work out as price rises are capped and 2 can either give you a monster haul or leave your team butchered.

tl;dr, wildcards "strategies" differ from team to team

You're right. I didn't regret using my wildcard early but I did regret not using it to increase my team value. I should have read the rules before Wk 8.

Option 2 was good this year - next year might be even better as it's a Euros year, so more chance (I don't think it's definite yet) that the FA Cup QFs will cause postponements (it was just the SFs this year).

In a wildcard week you are getting an extra 2 pts for any DGW player you bring in (provided they play both games) so it's effectively a 2 pt hit if you bring in a DGWer for a non DGWer.

would also suggest that if you say rival has to make hits later to fix DGW team then you would also so you need to add those hits to cost of that team

Good post. My WC was saved the Pool / Chelsea DGW and I have jumped from 5.5K to 1.4K over the past 4 weeks thanks to it.

With bigger DGWs - where there are 6-8 teams - it is more of use - but I still think it was the right play this year.

I have usually wildcarded early to catch price rises and get in place players who are regular starters.
With the change in price rises this has meant that I am 7mill down on team value this year compared to last year.

Wouldn't be keen on either of them...What about Young?

Gonna play Chester, so my feelings would me mixed in that game in that case. 😀

Why on earth you playing Chester...although, I think I recall having him for his goal v ManU last year!

Playing Terry and Kosc, other 3 are Chester (MUN), Toby (mci) and Duff (avl).

Everyone should have one. The only reason this isn't advertised is because it would be very expensive.

Absolutely. I think you may have to pay and always take your doctor's advice as to whether they should have one.
They are free for those with breathing or chest difficulties.

I think a lot of children had them last winter. Have a search on the NHS site Icon, I'm sure it will all be there.
The flu last year was thought I believe to be particularly one which children could be badly affected by so many were given the vaccination.

I'm in RoI so I'd guess it ain't free here; that's why I thought it was only for the elderly coz I've heard them pushing that here.

What Arsenal players do we reckon are most at risk of a rest in GW38?

I suppose it will depend on tonight's result to an extent. If Arsenal don't win they can only finish 3rd.
a loss and Utd can catch them.

Assuming they win tonight, I'd imagine there's a few at risk:-

Ramsey, Gru probably top of the list?

I don't think their pride was dented much. It was a nothing game and Jose said that before the game.

Well it showed in their performance as they did end up to lose. So I do believe it.
