Having cast an eye over Championship winners Bournemouth, we continue our assessment of the promoted sides with a look at play-off winners, Norwich City. With second-placed Watford still without a manager, we turn to the Canaries after Alex Neil successfully navigated a return to the top-flight at the first attempt.

CS = Clean sheets

The Canaries finished the season with 86 points from 46 matches, three points behind second-placed Watford and four adrift of champions Bournemouth. They were the third highest scorers with 88, behind the aforementioned Cherries and Hornets, while they were the third best defensive unit, conceding 48 times.

Norwich were the highest scoring home team in the division, netting 50 times at Carrow Road. They only failed to find the net in three of their 23 home encounters, while they scored three or more goals in nine of those matches in front of their own fans. Defensively, they were pretty solid, conceding just 24 goals, although they did only keep six clean sheets.

Away from home, Norwich had the joint best record with Bournemouth, picking up 44 points from their 23 away matches. They did score considerably less goals (38) on than travels than Bournemouth (50) and Watford (43), although they did average two goals per away match under Alex Neil, compared to 1.4 goals per away match under Neil Adams and Mike Phelan. They conceded 24 goals in their 23 matches away from Carrow Road, only bettered by Bournemouth (20) and earned a total of eight shut-outs on their travels.

The Canaries just missed out on automatic promotion, leaving them with a play-off semi-final against East Anglia rivals Ipswich Town. Jonny Howson netted in a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Portman Road, with Alex Neil’s men progressing after winning the second leg 3-1 at Carrow Road, with Wes Hoolahan, Nathan Redmond and Cameron Jerome on the scoresheet.

Norwich faced Middlesbrough in the play-off final at Wembley, and first-half goals from Jerome and Redmond helped secure a 2-0 victory.

THE MANAGER

Alex Neil started his managerial career at Scottish side Hamilton as a player-manager, and guided the club to promotion to the Scottish Premiership in his first full season in charge. When Neil Adams resigned in January with Norwich sitting seventh in the Championship, the Canaries moved swiftly for the 33-year-old Scot, handing him a one-year rolling contract. He made an immediate impact, winning seven of his first nine matches in charge.

The former Hamilton boss is very flexible in his tactical approach, but broadly favours a 4-4-1-1 system. It could be interpreted as a 4-1-4-1 formation at times, with Alex Tettey sitting just in front of the back four, Jonny Howson and Wes Hoolahan playing in more advanced central roles, with Nathan Redmond and Bradley Johnson out wide. He has also utilised the 4-2-3-1 formation, particularly following the addition of Graham Dorrans, with the Scotland international lining up as a deep-lying playmaker alongside the natural ball-winner Tettey. Most of the midfielders at Neil’s disposal can play in a variety of different roles, allowing him to change his approach depending on the opposition.

Although Norwich aren’t renowned for being a possession-based team like Bournemouth, they did average 56% possession last season, only 2% less than the champions. Whatever formation Neil utilises, he likes to have numbers in the middle of the park, while the full-backs are encouraged to get forward at every opportunity. He will have to be slightly more pragmatic against the bigger teams in the Premier League, although it is likely he will try and stick as close to these philosophies as possible.

Neil was quick to make his presence felt at Carrow Road, and captain Russell Martin has certainly been impressed by the Canaries boss:

“His preparations are brilliant: there is some real clarity, he leaves no stone unturned so there are no excuses when you get out there. His analysis of teams before the game and statistics and details mean we go into games knowing exactly what we have to do. And if you don’t do it, you soon know on a Monday morning watching the video.”

Norway international Tettey has been equally impressed with Neil during his short reign at the club:

“I’ve been learning a lot from him this season both in games and at training. His tactics are completely different. There is no doubt when you go on to the pitch. He has given belief to every player and he’s been telling us that we can beat every team when at our best. When you look at the middle part of the season where we were better than teams but losing points at the end – if he had been here, with his tactics that would never happen.”

THE PROMOTED SQUAD

Following relegation from the Premier League, there were a few changes in personnel at Carrow Road ahead of 2014/15. Key players Robert Snodgrass and Leroy Fer left for Hull and QPR respectively, while midfielder Anthony Pilkington joined Cardiff. Ricky van Wolfswinkel was sent on a season-long loan to St Etienne, while Andrew Surman, David Fox and Carlo Nash left the club.

In terms of acquisitions, forward Lewis Grabban was the headline signing, joining from Bournemouth for a fee of around £3 million. Cameron Jerome and Kyle Lafferty were also brought in to boost the Canaries striking options, and Jerome would ultimately play a big part in the club’s promotion to the Premier League. Carlos Cuéllar and Gary O’Neil were also signed to boost the depth of the squad.

There was plenty of continuity among the playing squad, though, with a couple of players still around from the last time Norwich played in the Championship back in the 2010/11 season, such as John Ruddy, Russell Martin and Wes Hoolahan.

Listed below are the player who featured at least ten times across the campaign, play-off matches included.

John Ruddy (49 starts) – the England international has enjoyed a successful time at Carrow Road since joining Norwich in 2010, and despite speculation regarding interest from Chelsea, he is expected to remain at the club ahead of the return to the top flight. Should be of interest next season if priced at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Steven Whittaker (40 starts, 2 goals, 5 assists) – a right-back who likes to get forward, he produced 38 key passes during the campaign, more than any other Norwich defender. Scored in each of the Canaries three seasons in the top-flight.

Russell Martin (48 starts, 2 goals, 5 assists) – club captain and the only Norwich player to be named in the PFA Championship Team of the Season. Now playing as a centre-half after featuring at right-back for the majority of the Canaries three-year spell in the Premier League but could find himself under pressure for a starting berth if Neil looks to bolster the heart of defence. Does lack a bit of pace at the highest level.

Sebastien Bassong (21 starts) – it was a curious season for the Cameroon international, who was out of favour under Neil Adams, and shipped out on loan to Watford during the first half of the season. Was back to his best under Neil and looks a sure starter for the return to the Premier League. Did fail to score last season, but is a decent threat from set pieces, registering three goals during the 2012/13 season in the top-flight.

Martin Olsson (45 starts, 1 goal, 5 assists) – like Whittaker, Olsson likes to push forward from full-back, although the Sweden international looks more likely to keep his starting position heading into next season. Subject of interest from Swansea in the January transfer window, Olsson looks the pick of the Norwich defenders along with Bassong, with a likely price of 4.5 in FPL.

Michael Turner (22 starts, 1 sub app. 1 goal, 1 assist) – was a regular starter under Adams, but was sent on loan to Fulham in March and is unlikely to feature in Neil’s plans.

Alex Tettey (37 starts, 2 sub apps. 2 goals, 1 assist) – a tenacious ball-winning midfielder, the Norway international offers a physical presence in the centre of the park. He isn’t the greatest passer, and playing as the deepest midfielder, won’t be of much interest to Fantasy managers. Picked up 13 yellow cards last season.

Bradley Johnson (43 starts, 1 sub app. 15 goals, 2 assists) – enjoyed his most prolific season, playing in a more advanced role on the left of midfield. Had more shots (126) than any of his team-mates, including some free-kicks, although like Tettey, his discipline is a concern, with 13 yellow and one red card accrued over the campaign. Could be one to keep an eye on next season.

Jonny Howson (35 starts, 2 sub apps. 9 goals, 6 assists) – the former Leeds man enjoyed a strong season, and always has the ability to pop up with a goal from midfield. Like Johnson, is one to watch, although he could be more prone to rotation if Neil looks to strengthen in midfield.

Wes Hoolahan (29 starts, 10 sub apps. 5 goals, 10 assists) – the Republic of Ireland international is Norwich’s most accomplished playmaker, and is also their primary penalty taker, although he has been on the field when Gary Hooper, Lewis Grabban and Graham Dorrans have stepped up this season. Hoolahan also shares corner taking duties with Nathan Redmond and takes some free-kicks. Can struggle against more physical opponents, and his Fantasy potential is lessened with the threat of rotation.

Nathan Redmond (36 starts, 10 sub apps. 6 goals, 13 assists) – still only 21, the former Birmingham winger ended the season in sparkling form, scoring three goals and providing five assists in the final seven matches. Shares corner dead-ball duties with Hoolahan, and is also one of the primary free-kick takers. Can still be inconsistent with his final pass, but is improving all the time and looks more “nailed on” than any of the other Norwich midfielders. The skilful wide man looks set to be a Fantasy asset next season, with a possible price of 5.0 or 5.5 in FPL.

Graham Dorrans (13 starts, 5 sub apps. 3 goals, 1 assist) – joined on loan from West Brom in February and played an important role during the run-in. The Scotland international has now made the move to Carrow Road permanent, signing a two-year deal. Took some of the free-kick duties, and can play in a variety of different roles in midfield, but his Fantasy potential could be limited, given Neil’s multitude of midfield options.

Gary O’Neil (10 starts, 12 sub apps. 2 assists) – has been part of three play-off winning sides in the last four seasons, but was often used as a substitute to help see out matches this term. Unlikely to play much of a part back in the top-flight.

Elliott Bennett (3 starts, 7 sub apps) – spent part of the season on loan at Brighton, but was used by Neil towards the end of the campaign. Remains to be seen if the winger will be part of the manager’s plans for the return to the Premier League.

Josh Murphy (1 start, 12 sub apps. 1 goal) – a talented winger who spent two months on loan at Wigan towards the end of the season. May find it hard to break into the first-team following promotion back to the top flight.

Cameron Jerome (35 starts, 9 sub apps. 20 goals, 7 assists) – the striker enjoyed a superb season for the Canaries, but has never scored more than 11 goals in a Premier League season during his time at Birmingham, Stoke and Crystal Palace. Did occasionally play on the left of a front three last season, but is primarily a target man.

Lewis Grabban (23 starts, 13 sub apps. 12 goals, 3 assists) – started the season in outstanding form, scoring five goals in his first five appearances, but ended the season behind Jerome in the pecking order. Has good pace and can lead the line well, but may find the step up to the Premier League a tough one.

Gary Hooper (15 starts, 16 sub apps. 12 goals, 6 assists) – there is no doubting his finishing ability, but the former Celtic forward does struggle to find a place in the starting XI because of his lack of physicality, as Neil tends to only start with one striker. Did score six goals last time around in the top-flight, but is likely to be confined to the role of “super sub†once again.

Kyle Lafferty (11 starts, 7 sub apps. 1 goal, 1 assist) – was a regular in the matchday squad under Adams, but the Northern Ireland international was sent out on loan to Turkish side Caykur Rizespor soon after Neil took charge, and it remains to be seen whether he has a future at Carrow Road.

POTENTIAL TARGETS

With promotion to the Premier League secured just a week ago, there is understandably little speculation regarding possible transfer targets. Moments after the final whistle at Wembley, Alex Neil was quick to shift his thoughts onto how preparations for the return to the top-flight would now begin in earnest:

“The next couple of days will be busy, we have two plans set in place in terms of recruitment, so we need to look at that. It has been two long, hard seasons for me personally and the play-offs have been good to me, but they extend your season by another three weeks. I am looking forward to a holiday with my family.”

The Scot also heaped praise on his current squad, stating the majority of them will be given the chance to prove themselves once more in the Premier League, although there will definitely be a few new additions:

“We’ll need to add quality to the squad, yes, but I’ll stick with the hard-core group of the squad who have got us up. They are capable of staying there, as they’ve proved before. Nobody will leave who we think can help us remain in the Premier League.”

Six players have been released following the play-off final, including Carlos Cuéllar, Javier Garrido and goalkeeper Mark Bunn, while Luciano Becchio has had his contract terminated by mutual consent.

As mentioned, Norwich have already completed their first signing of the summer, making Graham Dorrans’ switch from West Brom permanent, with the midfielder signing a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee. Neil was clearly delighted with his first piece of business in the transfer window:

“Graham has been a very important part of the team over the last few months and he has Premier League experience and is a top player. His experience and quality will help us and we’re delighted he has joined us on a permanent basis.”

Another midfielder who has been linked with a move to Carrow Road is Crystal Palace’s James McArthur. The 27-year-old was a team-mate of Neil’s at Hamilton and has revealed he was a big influence during the early stages of his career. It would seem unlikely that Palace would want to sell the former Wigan man though, given he played a prominent role in the club’s successful finish to the season under Alan Pardew.

Norwich struggled for creativity last time they were in the top flight, with the Canaries the lowest scorers during the 2013/14 season with just 28 goals. So the rumoured interest in NEC Nijmegen winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh could have some substance. The winger scored 13 goals and bagged 18 assists last season, and although he normally plays on the right, where Norwich already have the promising Nathan Redmond, he can also operate on the left and as a No. 10.

While Ricky van Wolfswinkel should report back to Norwich in pre-season after spending the season on loan at St Etienne, where he scored five league goals in 28 appearances, it is unclear where his future lies. The Dutch international only scored once in 25 outings in the Premier League, and while Cameron Jerome, Lewis Grabban and Gary Hooper all have their qualities, it would be a surprise if Neil didn’t look to add some firepower to his squad in the coming months.

The Canaries also look fairly thin at the back following the departures of Cuéllar and Garrido, on top of the need for added quality in that area, so you’d also expect to see some incomings in defence. It certainly looks like it’ll be a pretty busy summer for Neil, who should be handed a decent sized war chest this summer, given the new Premier League television deal kicks in ahead of the 2016/17 season, making survival in the top-flight imperative. While there is plenty of Premier League experience in the current squad, there is no doubt further quality will be needed if Norwich are to stay up next season.

*Many thanks goes to Norwich fan Richard McTiernan for his input during the research of this article.

Think Lovren and Markovic (if he plays regularly) will step it up next season

        Lovren won't.

Markovic needs to be played central or off the left. Give him a chance, BR! Grrrrr.

Not for me. I'd give the likes of Balotelli, Ilori and Origi a chance.

I wouldn't give Balotelli a chance, he's too much of a tool to have in the dressing room and what he does off the pitch and he has no application or desire to better himself on the pitch.

He doesn't help himself but BR has thrown him under the bus time and time again. Remember the little spell he played vs Spurs Palace Besiktas then dropped to the bench.

Not for me sorry, was a no brainer to leave him where he was last summer, Origi is coming off of a terrible season with the fans being on his back, it'll be a massive step up, I can't see much going for the lad, unfortunately, he'll be a bit part player until he settles I think.

I was on Liverpool Rumours earlier (quite a reputable sight that I can see since I've followed it a few years now) and it was disheartening, Klopp setting himself up for a bigger job and our transfer targets... Put it this way, we'll be lucky to make the top 7 again.

There's always hope, shop don't get entirely disheartened. But yes, there is a lot of work needed. I still am not sure about FSG, to be honest. I don't get a feeling that they truly are driven to bring Pool to the top again, that is just my feeling.

They must act, it will get tougher to attract big name to Pool the longer they remain on the periphery of the CL, and for all the great things that youth and potential brings, the top sides must have some big names as well.

                        😉

I think they will keep BR...

They should scrap the board and have aDOF instead, however FSG have a representative on said transfer board I believe. That to me possibly hints that they are quite keen on ensuring they control all the transfer activity, possibly for financial reasons. This is all conjecture, though.

I think they might sell out, I know RCA said the same in a thread last night, they underestimated the running of a football club and everything with it despite the best intentions. :/

Won't be touching the top 4 without signing a DM, a striker and playing Lovren over Sakho. Winning the EL is the most realistic way to get back into CL, and I don't fancy our chances at all to win that! ðŸ™

Could clubs ever implement a buy-back clause in the event of them getting promoted back into the Premier League and the buying club getting relegated?

Seen mentions of Snoddy and Fer drawing the short straw with their respective transfers and while I understand Norwich selling them (both are competent PL players imo), they'd be welcome additions back into the squad.

      • 12 Years
      10 years, 6 months ago

They could, but I highly doubt it.

Not sure what was paid for Snodgrass & Fer without checking, but I dare say they'd get 'em cheaper/break even. Both clubs need the wages off the books and neither have done much since leaving.

A new manager at Norwich now though. No need to be sentimental.

I don't see any reason why they couldn't. They can pretty much draw up whatever contracts they want as long as both parties agree. Whether it's a good idea or not though is a different story.

Liverpool would get Klopp if FSG changed their 'vision'. He wants full control. They ain't giving it. The only reason Rodgers may still be in charge is cos Klopp said 'no'. Frank de Boer is another candidate. But sideways I think.

Personally, I don't think Liverpool will ever do anything with the current owners in charge. They are just smarter versions of the previous lot.

If Ings signs it's only via Rodgers is staying. Milner likely.

Rodgers wanted full control and they gave him it, many continental clubs and the likes of City and Chelsea I think use DoFs, it's not unsurprising.

They haven't. He wouldn't take the job under a DoF. A Transfer Comitee was formed as a compromise.

That's what I'm saying, the transfer committee only came about last summer after Rodgers transfer failings became apparent. At the beginning they let him do what he wanted effectively as manager, what they want really is just a head coach and all other football matters dealt with by a DoF.

He didn't specifically say that, at first he said he wasn't taking time off or didn't wish too, stating he wasn't tired. Right now he said something along the lines of he is taking time off until further notice, and that he's just waiting for the right job to come up at the right time. Still I think he'll just wait til next summer when a number of big jobs will be on offer.

I was saying the same yesterday. The way they run this club is a joke. The american methods do not translate. Scrap the committee and back someone with full control is the only way. Rodgers or otherwise. Its inexcusable if klopp ( perfect man for the job) or Carlo aren't offered whatever they want within reason to come over.

Definitely...But that's a compliment to the way they are set up. It's easy to see what needs to happen and who fits where and when. Liverpool and Spurs don't know who needs to go and who needs to stay...they're a bit of a mess tbh...

I'm really not sure sturridge is better than kane. If he's out Injired most of the time, even if when he is fit he scores more goals (which he didn't), you can't says he's a better striker. Injury frequency should be taken into account.

I can't see sturridge doing what kane did to chelsea and arsenal without Suarez to help. 😉

He's not though...Any player who simply can't keep himself fit is a liability. I'm fairly sure that in four or five years time that the Pool fans will wonder why on earth they stuck with him for so long. He's a great player when fit but it'll be forever "what if".

Of course Sturridge is injury prone. A fully fit Sturridge vs fully fit Kane, Sturridge scores you more goals

It all went wrong in the early nineties, the club never modernised and successive owners like Moores (seemed to be a lot like what Mike Ashley is doing to Newcastle) Hicks and Gilette only now it is commercially looking to do well, and is, as well as the long, long overdue stadium expansion. Right now the issue is Rodgers, while off the field money wise the club had its debts wiped and was doing well, on the field Rodgers hasn't brought the club forward while pissing away millions and gaining us more debt. I've previously explained all of Rodgers flaws in detail, I honestly don't have the heart to go over it again.

We should be given a membership # sequentially and then we could all compete to get the prestigious early low numbers.

On second thoughts a bunch of grown men getting excited over claiming a low number on a website is a ludicrous suggestion. Surely we've got better things to do? 😉

    Liverpool "Janus" Appraisal

This is posted here for comments prior to the finalised article going in. Views from Liverpool fans and/or those that know the club well are especially welcome. And, as usual, if you don't want to read a long post please skip over this.

    LIVERPOOL BACKGROUND

I have a confession to make. I still think of Liverpool as a big club, one of the top group in English football. The trouble is, in many ways they aren't any more. Liverpool have never won the Premier League in the 23 years since it was founded. Their finishing positions in the last six seasons are 7th, 6th, 8th, 7th, 2nd, 6th. They haven't won a European trophy since the memorable CL win in Istanbul 10 years ago and have slumped to 42nd place in the UEFA club coefficients. In the last 10 seasons they have won 2 domestic cups and that's it.

It is hard for those, like me, who grew up in the 70s and 80s to adjust to the fact that the Liverpool of legend is not the Liverpool of today. Especially so for many Liverpool fans. In some ways that is part of Liverpool's problem, maybe. Expectations are unrealistically high and it only takes one excellent season with Suarez to send them through the roof. Talented young players like Sterling are told that they should feel privileged to play for such a wonderful club but Sterling wasn't even born when Liverpool last won the top English league. What does all the 70s and 80s history mean to him, a kid that was born in Jamaica and grew up in London?

Some will think these musings are extraneous to an article like this and some Liverpool fans may even find them offensive although they aren't intended to be. But actually I think they are relevant. It seems to me that Liverpool FC's history has become a dead weight around its neck and that until a new Shankly can break them free of it they are facing an uphill struggle. Overly high expectations can crush you as much as low expectations can. And personally I don't believe Brendan Rodgers is the kind of figure that can give Liverpool the break out from the past that is needed.

Having said all that, we have to assume that Rodgers will still be in charge next season, pending the FSG review that is due to happen this week. These notes will therefore be partly based on that surmise.

    LIVERPOOL REVIEW

Liverpool will be the first Europa League team reviewed in these articles so let's get the EL effect out of the way first. Europa League (or equivalent) teams that qualified through league position (applies to Spurs, Liverpool and Southampton) have finished an average 3.2 places lower in the Premier League than in the season in which they qualified over the last 10 years. [Source: BBC] Pocchettino of Spurs says "the Europa League is a very tough competition because it affects your domestic league...having had a Europa League season I can confirm that it is very difficult to manage with the Premier League and both cups".

3.2 places is big. It is equivalent to a loss of 8-10 points over the season.

Regular Champions League teams can build squads big enough to cope. But the Europa League doesn't offer anywhere near the same financial boost and doesn't really support a bigger squad. Maybe that's one reason for the difference. The Thursday-Sunday routine coupled with more long journeys to far-flung destinations appears to be another. But whatever the reason, the EL syndrome means that Liverpool assets will need to be considered with an additional pinch of salt in the coming season.

2nd guessing specific transfers in and out for Liverpool will be a hopeless exercise at this stage. But we can nevertheless have an idea where in the squad they may be and take account of those possibilities. I will try to do this in the sections below.

    LIVERPOOL PLAYERS - DEFENCE

Liverpool's defence was a mixed bag in the 2014/15 season. 14 PL clean sheets is a fair return, though 7 of those came in a mid-season run of 9 games. But Liverpool's 48 goals conceded is high for a top 6 team, 50% more than Chelsea and more than clubs like Stoke and West Ham.

Mignolet was the stand out performer, his 149 FPL points (including 23 save points) compare well with other premium GKs. There is a good case for marking him out as the Liverpool defender of choice although Liverpool Echo suggests that GK is one of the positions Liverpool is looking at.

Other than that, the Liverpool defence may not be so very different next season in terms of personnel. They are apparently looking at a RB to replace Johnson (Clyne, Byram) and of course Flanagan should also be available again. Of the current outfield defenders, Skrtel looks the most valuable from a FPL perspective, especially if he can get anywhere near his 2013/14 tally of 7 goals. However there is also the possibility that Can could be re-classified as a defender and if so he could be the best option, especially as he'd likely be cheaper than Skrtel. But most FPL managers won't be rushing to pay premium prices for Liverpool defenders who also have EL to contend with.

    LIVERPOOL PLAYERS - MIDFIELD

Liverpool Echo has been linking the club with a number of midfielders - Milner, Kovacic, Gaitan. Possibly this would be to play alongside Henderson who will be Liverpool's captain now Gerrard has left.

There are a number of options in the Liverpool midfield, of which many seem of less interest for FPL purposes. Can (unless classified as a defender), Allen, Lucas, Markovic and probably Ibe as well seem unlikely to be productive enough or gametime secure enough to consider unless their price points are unexpectedly low. So that leaves Sterling, Lallana, Coutinho and Henderson to look at.

Sterling leads this group on attacking stats (per 90 minutes) in almost every area apart from conversion of shots into goals and was Liverpool's 2nd highest FPL points scorer with 158 points, just behind Henderson. This is only 18% lower than Silva's total, and the perception is that Silva had a stellar season. In addition, he will likely come in priced around 1.5m lower than Silva next season. He is at an age where improvement could be expected and surely has to be a short list contender if he settles to staying at the club. But that's a big if.

Lallana had an injury hit season but his impressive 178 FPL points for Southampton in 2013/14 show what he can do when given a clear run. His stats are a little behind Sterling on creativity and goal threat but he could easily come in at a price point around 8.0, low enough to make him a very feasible option if fit and established in the 1st XI. He's one that might benefit if Sterling leaves.

Coutinho is a very serious option. He has good creativity stats and was possibly the Liverpool midfielder that suffered the most from their strikers' poor conversion - with an in-form striker he could/should have had more assists than he did. He is also what Ludo called a "shot hog" - Coutinho attempted far and away more shots per 90 than any other Liverpool midfielder, though a lot of them from outside the box. He also has a fair proportion of free-kicks. A lot of FPL managers will need a midfielder or two at around the 8.0 mark and Coutinho could be one of the better choices at that level.

That leaves Henderson who is in some ways the hardest to assess. He has penalties, which is always an advantage, but his creativity stats lag quite far behind Sterling and Coutinho and he takes fewer shots per 90 than all the other 'main' Liverpool midfielders by quite a way. In addition, as Liverpool's highest FPL points scorer his price will doubtless increase from this season's bargain starting price of 6.0 and could even go as high as 8.0. At that price I'd personally rather have Coutinho (or Lallana if fit and established as 1st choice).

    LIVERPOOL PLAYERS - STRIKER

What a mess. Sturridge injured repetitively and believing that he has a genetic pre-disposition to injury. Balotelli looking a shadow of his confident self. Origi voted into Ligue 1's 'worst team of the season'. Lambert failing to impress. It's not surprising that the Liverpool Echo seems certain that the club will sign a new striker - Vietto, Benteke, Lacazette and Martinez being some of the names linked. Of those, Martinez would probably be a great FPL option in a Liverpool shirt, he is quick, deadly, mobile and proven, just what Liverpool need. But he's also 28 and doesn't fit FSG's model of buying players that will have resale value. In any case, as it stands right now there would seem to be no Liverpool strikers you could hang your hat on.

    SUMMARY

Liverpool assets are going to be a tricky call, especially given the Europa League effect. Mignolet and Can (if re-classified) could be options in defence. Flanagan might also prove to be. The strikers seem to be uninspiring pending any new arrival. It will probably be to the Liverpool midfield that FPL managers will most look for options. And as it stands right now, Coutinho looks as if he might be the best of them while the situation with Sterling is still so unsettled.

          A very good introduction

The overestimation of their abilities also extends to FPL when they dish out the prices, Liverpool players are never likely to be cheap

I agree with most of what has been said there, one thing i would add is that Sturridge has managed to score 41 goals in 67 matches for Liverpool. If (a big if) he can stay fit then he is still a very good option imo - hopefully as a reduced price this season

I agree about his potential if he could stay fit. But I just doubt he will given his track record and the way he thinks about it. In a way I am looking at who I might have in my GW1 team and I wouldn't want a player with such a dubious injury record as Sturridge.

What do you think his price will be? 11.5 this season, could it come down as low as 9.0? I think it would need to before I'd think about him really.

Good overview, especially with so many variables - manager, Europa, formation, signings

The Ings deal is supposedly close- surely he won't be their only new striker? Perhaps it will be dependent on 1 or 2 leaving.

If Hendo gets a CM spot (as opposed to DM), could we see an Cazorla/Ozil style dilemma between Hendo and Cout?

      1. Ruth_NZ

Ings suits the FSG model. Whether he's the striker Liverpool need is another question.

As for Coutinho, I can't see him playing too deep myself. But I guess only time will tell.

Coutinho's an interesting one. He's not really an out-and-out attacking mid, but he's not a CM either. He's a hybrid of the two really.

With Milner signing I'd imagine a midfield trio of Can, Hendo, Milner with Coutinho LW

With the current batch only coutinho would interest me if they sort out the striker situation. But unless Liverpool have a great opening set of fixtures I doubt I'd start with him as he is not big hitter material and is likely to be too expensive for a 3rd/4th mf initially. Henderson at this years price would be good but it's not going to happen

They would have been overpriced this season because of the success in the previous season. I'd expect a massive downgrade on their price points overall next time around. Hendo might be the only player who will go up in price.

I don't have a lot to say, constructively, other than that it's an excellent piece. Good stuff.

I still think Brendan is capable of organising a very good defence. Think back a few seasons and his Swansea were the absolute star performers in the budget defence bracket and he did it with fairly weak personnel. But perhaps he isn't minded to repeat that with what on paper should be a much more capable attacking squad than that which he had in Wales.

That's how I see things with the Rodgers "safe" news from today. I don't think BR will go with back 3 as it got found out by other PL managers, bringing the mini mid-season revival to an end.

The two "big" signings will be Milner and Clyne. *sighs. If we couldn't attract world class last summer with the lure of CL football we certainly won't this season either.

If that is indeed close to the starting 11 in August, only Coutinho would appeal to me. Sturridge is too injury prone and I think that defence will still concede goals, especially from set-pieces, where BR seems hopelessly out of his depth in trying to coach the mistakes out of them.

Very pessimistic post from me and I hope I'm proved wrong ðŸ™

Hopefully the likes of Ibe, Markovic, an OOP Can or Flanagan can become short term FPL budget busters if they hit some form/ get a run in the team.

Only 10 players. Add Sterling or Lallana maybe?

Apart from that, surely they will add a striker even if only Ings. Sturridge can't be relied on and they really have nothing else.

          Whoops 😳

Yes, it was meant to be a 4-4-2 diamond with probably Ings as another striker. That's looking likely as things stand. Balotelli will probably stay on too. FSG will cash in on Sterling imo. It's what they do.

They could also go with a 4-2-3-1 of course. With Can and Hendo (Milner) protecting the back 4 and Milner (Hendo), Coutinho and Ibe/ Markovic/ Lallana in there as a 3 behind Sturridge.

When he has played a 4-2-3-1 before though, he has often put Coutinho out that bit wider which reduces his effectiveness, imo.

He needs to be in the middle where he can slip balls through to a hopefully fully fit Sturridge.

As you say, we really have nothing else. The failure to sack Rodgers or to attract a top manager (the latter has dictated the former, imo, as I'm sure they sounded a few guys out before today's "review") has probably resulted in LFC sticking with Rodgers as FSG didn't have a viable alternative.

A couple of months into the season, along with a couple of OKish signings could see them in 8th at Christmas. BR sacked. Interim replacement. Another scramble next summer to get a better manager. Rinse, cycle, repeat.

Then. 4 or so years into the "project" FSG realize... nah, this ain't for us, we're outta here.

Yes. I can't see FSG in it for the long haul. I'm surprised Liverpool supporters haven't turned against them by now because their approach indicates that they don't really "get" Liverpool at all. It's just a business to them.

I think last year was kind of the worse case scenario for Sturridge just one awful year where everything that could have gone wrong went wrong. Aguero and Van Persie have had years like that and they have gone on to be effective fantasy assets .
