On Thursday, Newcastle raided Anderlecht for the second time this summer, signing defender Chancel Mbemba for a fee reportedly in the region of £8.5 million. The 20-year-old has penned a five-year deal at St James’ Park, and will join up with his team-mates in the middle of next week once his overseas work visa is granted.

Speaking to the club’s official website about his move to Tyneside, the DR Congo international expressed his happiness at securing a move to the Premier League:

“I know the team very well. I’ve watched the Premier League and I know this is a massive team with big players and with a great coach. I’ve come here to Newcastle United because it’s a very good move in my career to play for such a famous club. I am excited for the season ahead.”

THE HISTORY

Mbemba began his footballing journey in the DR Congo, playing for E.S. La Grace and FC MK Etancheite in Kinshasa during his youth career, before joining Anderlecht in 2011. Confusion over Mbemba’s birth date meant he initially was limited to playing with the reserves as the investigation was carried out, with the defender eventually making his first team debut in a 3-2 defeat to Lokeren in the opening match of the 2013/14 campaign. He immediately became a regular in the starting XI, and made 40 appearances in all competitions, scoring an impressive six goals and grabbing a single assist, playing his part as Anderlecht won the Belgian Pro League.

Last season, Mbemba made 36 appearances for the Belgian outfit, including all six of Anderlecht’s Champions League matches, and registered three goals and one assist. After making his international debut for DR Congo in 2012, Mbemba has gone on to make 17 appearances for his country.

THE PROSPECTS

Given the considerable outlay, it’s fair to say that Mbemba appears very likely to establish himself in the starting XI at St James’ Park sooner rather than later. Speaking about his latest signing, head coach Steve McClaren outlined what qualities the centre-back will bring to the squad:

“He is a proven performer at the highest level, he’s powerful, combative and will add quality to our defence. He also has an eye for goal which is an extra asset for us. We will get him integrated into the squad quickly once he is with us. Unfortunately, due to the time it takes to process the visa application that won’t be in time for our final friendly on Saturday, but our focus will be to make sure he will be ready and available as soon as possible.”

The defender’s late arrival places doubt as to whether he will feature in McClaren’s thoughts for the Gameweek 1 home clash against Southampton, but the mention of Mbemba’s “eye for goal” will certainly strike a chord with Fantasy managers.

In terms of the Magpies defensive set-up for the season ahead, much depends on the future of Fabricio Coloccini. The Argentine is a doubt for the start of the season with an Achilles injury and may well be set to leave the club anyway, with rumours of a move to Crystal Palace growing. Should Coloccini indeed depart, Mbemba is likely to be partnered by one of Mike Williamson, Paul Dummett or Steven Taylor, whilst England U21 international Jamaal Lascelles has featured throughout pre-season under McClaren and may even be in contention.

Taking a look at Mbemba’s defensive statistics from his six Champions League outings last term, he averaged 2.5 tackles and 3.3 interceptions per match, turning in some very favourable displays that have drawn comparisons with City skipper Vincent Kompany. In the Premier League last season, Coloccini only managed 1.9 tackles and 2.2 interceptions per 90 minutes, while Williamson logged just 1.1 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game. Certainly based on those statistics, it’s easy to see why the DR Congo international is expected to quickly nail down a role in McClaren’s first XI once he has settled into life in the North East.

Much depends on his cost across the Fantasy games, though. Right-back Daryl Janmaat is the only Newcastle defender to be priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, with all the other members of the backline bar Taylor (4.0) available for 4.5. Given Mbemba’s aerial threat from set-pieces, there’d be no real surprise if he joins the Dutch international in the 5.0 price bracket, but should he be valued at 4.5, the young centre-back could prove to be something of a bargain. Ideally, though, Fantasy managers will be hoping for Taylor to nail down a role alongside the new boy, affording us a rare 4.0-priced starter for our five-man backlines.

Newcastle’s tough opening schedule, however, will mean it’s later in the season where Mbemba could really come into his own. The Magpies play six of last year’s top eight (SOT, swa, mun, ARS, CHE, mci) over the first eight, with the fixture list smiling far kinder from Gameweek 9 onwards (NOR, sun, STO, bou, LEI).

It may take a little time for Mbemba to settle into English football both on and off the pitch, with high profile centre-backs such as Nemanja Vidic and Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala having struggled during the start of their careers in England. The statistics certainly point to the former Anderlecht defender being able to command a place in the starting XI, and with his proven goal threat, Mbemba could emerge as a viable Fantasy asset as the season develops.

For me its down to Sterling and slightly worse defence and Wilson or Milner, Chelsea def and Sakho.

All good options but I have my doubts about Bournemouth. Their pre seaon form has been bit let down

The only thing sterling has that ibe doesn't is experience. Ibe is more direct, he can strike a ball too. My only worry is he seems a bit soft jumps out of tackles, could do with being a bit more gritty and he'll turn out to be a top player.

    Dugout Review

Hello. Just had a trial draft run on Dugout FC and just wanted to share my experience. 9 out of 10 people showed up, so the remaining team didn't get any picks. Funny because he got assigned the first pick overall and didn't create a shortlist. Considering it’s a snake draft, it might have caused a few glitches.

Everything went smoothly until about round 12, where it decided to skip one or two players and for some active players the system decided to just auto-pick their choice based on their shortlist. I highly recommend that you edit/update your short list as you are doing the draft just in case this happens; that way you get the pick you want in case of an error. At times, the timer just froze at 0, and we had to wait for it load back up again. In the end, only one team really got screwed and ended up with 14/18 players. The remaining 8 teams ended with 18. We are currently deciding how to compensate him with some of our picks. Perhaps a trade here and there. You can always pick free agents once the draft is over, obviously.

There a few players classified as M/F such as Sterling, which can be very flexible when picking a starting squad. Highly recommend you pick him up. Alexis is classified as a striker.

Clearly, the site is still a work in progress as even prior to the draft I had trouble logging on and it failed to save my shortlist. I recommend you export your shortlist to an excel spreadsheet as well.

Don’t forget to check out this article for more information on the draft process.

Wanted to share my team, as I think I did very well to balance my team.

    1GK, 6 DEF, 5 MID, 6 FWD.

    Butland
Koscielny Kolarov Bellerin Bertrand Moreno Chester
    Ayew Mane Milner Tadic Young
Sanchez Sterling Gomis Bojan Bamford Ighalo

    What do you think?

I wasn't sure so I had many. Just a bit over 100, but I don't think that many is necessary.

        I had 30 FWD, 30 MID, 30 DEF and 10-15 GKs.

You can probably get away with 60-70.

Just remember most of the premium options will be gone by Round 2. I'd focus on your front 7 before anything else. I was able to pick up Kosc in round 6 or 7.

First of all, thanks a lot. This really helps big time.
How did you do a trial draft on the site? Or was it a normal draft?
How was the draft divided? People scrambling for all positions all the time or the mids and forwards going in the first few rounds and then moving towards defs.?

Thanks for the tips on the shortlist.
I think you have a fantastic 18 player squad. Some of those picks would be very difficult to snag, I imagine. The balance looks on dot as well, though you could trade a forward for an extra mid.

Any other tips and insights on how to work the draft in your favour? Thanks anyway.

I organized it by position, like my first 30 were all strikers but this is not ideal.

I would order by your specific player preference regardless of position, and possibly PPG.

You can always filter by position within your shortlist.

It was a real, normal draft, just said trial because it was the first time I'd ever done a draft league.

Most people picked up the premium strikers first, followed by the mids. The last pick gets two picks back to back. I wish they had a draft history option. I didn't worry about a GK until the final rounds, and Butland fell to me so I'm happy with that. See my comment above about waiting for defenders. Yes some people will end up getting Ivan, Terry etc etc but I wanted to focus on my front 7 as the mid options thin out very early.

I'm not sure what the right structure is, I may have ended up with too many strikers but like I said Raheem is flexible and can be placed in the midfield.

First round went Hazard, Kun, Fab, Alexis, Costa, Rooney, Silva, Kane, Theo. I wish they had a draft history option. Can't think of any other tips right now but if i do I will post it in that article.

Yes. That's very interesting. That first round. Gives me a fair idea on how to approach the draft head-on. No time for caution.

Yea. I think I'll target them defenders somewhere from round 5 and above. When did you start playing the punts - that is Young, Bamford, Ighalo, Moreno etc.

An important question - what are the kind of players left in the discards? A decent GK if I go with just 1?

Those were all in the later rounds obviously once I had my first 11.

Also consider that my draft only had 9 players so we had more to choices to pick from.

There is about 5 GK free agents, the three from the promoted sides along with Adrian and Krul. Some went with 1 GK and some with two GK.

I didn't feel the need to get two GK because if Butland does get hurt, I can always pick up his backup Given/Haugaard as they will be available. It's also not likely you will get 2 GKs with a perfect rotation because someone will pick them up.

In a perfect 10 player draft, most starting players are gone. Consider there are 20 teams x 11 starters, that is 220 total starting players.

With 10 players drafting 18 players, you have 180 players on all teams leaving you with ~40 free agents.

Yes, I have taken into account the player difference.
Right, I think that is decent to work with. Those goalkeepers will give me good backup, if I end up a keeper short.

40 players seems reasonable. Could be make or break.

              Thanks mate. Cheers. Help appreciated.

did it speed up as people cared less about subs or slow down as people scrabbled about trying to find the more obscure players?

I would imagine it slowed down, as players are trying to find the best picks at that stage, many who won't be on their shortlist.

Slow down I'd say because the later rounds are tricky and you want to make sure you are getting the right player. Also depends on the person, some took their time and some just went for the next best option, by PPG I assume.

While waiting for your turn, you should move at least 2-3 options up your shortlist just in case someone steals your pick, which happened many times!

But if I rotate with fixtures, it could be allright, I think. Sinclair & Mahrez
can both score big, where as a 4.5 mid might have no influence on the game,
what means that you rely big on a player of a newly promoted side.
I'm sceptical of Ritchie, as you can see 🙂

Midfield strong too, though I would approach Ritchie with caution. Unknown quantity imo. It is your choice whether to stick with Haz or go for Fab and upgrade Ritchie to another 8.5 (2.5 difference between Haz and Fab, right?)

Defenders similar to mine, I have plumped for Ivan as he does start the season with attacking intent, and Chelsea's CS prospects can be a tad all over the place.

Goalies fine, I assume you rather it than a X2 rotation.

I have same forward line 🙂 Think it should work a treat for first 4 GW's, but I am keeping 2.0 ITB to switch either Costa or Rooney to Kun as soon as Kun's fit.
Personally I wouldn't go with Haz & Costa... because you already have Azpi, you would be better off with southampton attacking coverage imo (Tadic, Mane or Pelle)
So I would do Haz -> Mane, then upgrade Ritchie to Ramsey/Ozil/Caz with 2.5 of the 3.5
You then still have 1.0 to do with what ou wish... maybe hold it to potentially get some city attacking coverage in for GW4 onwards!
We're both banking on dat fwd line though, hoping for 30 points in GW1 (before captaining 😉 )

Firstly thanks for replying 🙂 . I don't want to lose Hazard and I kind of ruled out Mane not because I think owning him is a bad option but due to funding . I hope Chadli can keep up 🙂 . Ritchie is my punt I hope he works out . I am think Hazard is an exceptional option I think he is too consistent to leave out . I hope this forward line works out for both of us 🙂

    Schmeichel, Butland
    Azpi, Mert, Cedric, Francis, Saylor
    Wally, Sterling, Hazard, Henderson, Fletcher
    Rooney, Pelle, Deeney

    What needs improving?

I would personally get Kos over Mert, and if you don't have a plan for your money then you might as well upgrade Saylor. Alternatively, get Mane over Henderson.

I would upgrade henderson or pelle

I dont seem to see too many Clyne picks in a lot of RMT's. Is there a reason for this?

I have him shortlisted alongside Kos and Azpi right now, will be picking 2 of the 3. I think he could be a great pick, performed very well last season at Saints and may well have had some better attacking returns if Pelle could have put away some of his chances. A player that will continue to get better and now at Liverpool with an attractive 5.5 price tag, I think he could be a great pick.
