In our next article on the Sky Sports Fantasy game, we assess our captaincy options. This includes the various ways you can change your captain and also incorporates our preferred strategy up until the end of September. The aim, of course, is to try and exploit this feature to our benefit and increase our points potential.

As in most Fantasy games with a captaincy option, the player with the armband earns you double points, be it positive or negative. For a look at all the rules in the Sky Sports game, click here.

Swapping the armband

Fantasy managers are handed ONE swap per Gameweek and a Gameweek runs from Friday at 00.01am until 00:00 the following Thursday. This is different from last season, to take into account Friday matches, which occurs in Gameweek 2 when Villa host United. The trick here, of course, is to have your captained player featuring early in the Gameweek and then use your one swap to a player who takes to the field later in the week, therefore getting two captains out of your one change. In order to repeat this process, though, the player you selected as your captain for the Sunday/Monday should ideally play next week on the Saturday.

Banking

On occasion you may wish to ‘bank’ your captain swap – for example your captain plays on the Saturday but none of the matches over the Sunday and/or Monday look appealing. Instead of letting it go to waste, it’s a good idea to use your swap after the fixtures but before the current Gameweek has finished (best to wait up until Thursday evening in case of injuries etc) to set yourself up for the incoming rounds of fixtures choosing a player who features early of course.

Transferring Skippers

If you transfer your current captain out of your team and acquire a replacement, the incoming player will take over the armband and this will not use your one allocated swap. This tactic can work in two ways – you can make the trade and still have a captain switch to follow or, if you’ve already changed your captains, the transfer gives you another armband option for the Gameweek. You can also transfer your captain out multiple times if it’s a week with fixtures also on the Tuesday and Wednesday, for example, and have multiple captains in a given round of matches.

Playing the Blanks

When the Premier League takes a break for international or FA Cup matches, the blank week still has relevance when it comes to captain swaps, as it still counts as a Gameweek. This means you can use your one captain swap during this week and so be more adventurous with your armband choices the weekend beforehand.

Risk/Reward Tactics

Over the course of the season all these scenarios will feature in our strategies. As we assess each Gameweek, the risk/reward of using player transfers will have to be balanced, as quite often I found that quality out performed quantity and so having Sergio Aguero as my one skipper for the week could outperform using transfers to have Sadio Mane twice, for example – again, it’s a judgement call and can go either way. Planning your captaincies well in advance has its advantages as it means you can determine which route to navigate through the fixtures and not end up stuck with an unwanted armband choice and forced into a transfer. As always, though, injuries and form come into the equation and it’s important to remain flexible and re-write your plan regularly to stay on top of the game.

Our captain plan

In truth, this season is a bit of a nightmare when it comes to captain strategy – with the way that fixtures have fallen, we’re rarely afforded a strong Saturday/Sunday rotation. Here we bring you the most cautious approach we could find that still uses premium options from the top teams; this is without using any transfers, so misses out on quite a few opportunities for additional captains. Nonetheless, we think it’s a good blue print to use as a starting point, allowing you to add in extra captains at your discretion.

Following this means that as long as you have a player from Arsenal, Man United and Man City, you should have no issues navigating the first eight Gameweeks. As already mentioned, there are several blank fixtures, whereby using a transfer or targeting a player from a “lesser team” that has good Saturday to Sunday to Saturday rotation will result in more captains but with a possible loss in quality. This is probably the hardest part of the Sky game to get right – whether to take the plunge and spend transfers for extra captains or hide behind the sofa and hope playing safe works out. In the end it comes down to a judgement call and a little luck.

If you have followed our articles up until now and you add this plan to your repertoire you should be armed with all you need for a successful season.

SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT LEAGUES

Scott Sinclair is getting a lot of love tonight.
    A) is he nailed
    B) which position is he playing for Villa, left wing?
    C) has he been granted set piece duties, particularly pens, direct FKs?
    D) is anyone playing him as in their XI or is he just 5th mid benchfodder?

      YeS
Left forward. Think Hazard, J Rodriguez and other non box to box "mids"
Pens . Prob the odd set piece too
5th mid but playing him at times as 3rd striker only Sakho, not a Benteke or Pelle

      A) No - but he'll surely start GW1 after that hattrick. It's up to him after that.
      B) Yep
      C) Not as far as I'm aware. Perhaps the odd direct free kick.
      D) I'd only consider him as a 5th midfielder, maybe playing the odd game here or there - he'd make a good partner for someone like Sakho or Deeney who have a tough GW1 fixture, and it wouldn't be the end of the world if he lost his place after that.

Nice team. Loving the Mahrez pick! Not convinced by Ki or Falcao, however. But I wouldn't stress on it as Falcao is your gut pick, I presume. I think you should re consider the goalies, as well.

      Ruddy, Rudd.
      Chester, Cédric, Coates, Huth, Gomez.
      Sterling, Walcott, Depay, Mané, Whelan.
      Agüero, Kane, Sakho.

Nothing in the bank, crapping myself about Hazard but who cares 😎

Doesn't look great GW1 though. Very tempted to use the all out attack chip in GW1 with an alternate team then WC in GW2 for this one.

The obvious lack of Hazard is a problem - but I like it, apart from that. Think you need to spend a bit more on defense, however. A possible downgrade from Sakho to Wilson and upgrades from Rudd to Butland and Gomez to A.WIlliams would serve you well.

We'll see. Once a cheap midfielder really hits form, that's the time to sell Walcott(when Alexis is back and flowing) to said player and spread the cash.

Really nice. Prefer Wilson to Deeney with the fixtures early doors. A possible downgrade from Milner to a 6.0 mid or below would serve you well as it would solve the problem of a lone keeper and the 4.0 defender, imo.

Really strong frontline. Can't fault the team apart from the keepers. Don't think you need Sinclair with Mahrez in there. He already has decent fixtures to begin with. A downgrade from Sinclair to a nailed 4.5 mid and upgrade on the keepers is required. Great effort though!

I'd go Cedric or A.Williams over Jenkinson seeing that you don't have a Bournemouth defender anyways who rotate well with West Ham. I don't really trust WHAM at the back anyways. Midfield is good - Lukaku could be a decent punt for the Watford game but after that he might be a transfer waiting to happen. Why don't you get Benteke over him in the first place? Also I've been on many Leicester forums recently and most fans seem to suggest that it will be Vardy and one of Ulloa/Okazaki who will start up top. Okazaki being the record signing might complicate matters for Ulloa

This is really good advice! I think I'll do this as looking at their fixtures they rotate pretty well. Do you think Huthnis nailed on with leicester signing this new defender? Would you save the 0.5 on mignolet and go for butland instead?

Not convinced by Tadic, I'm afraid. I'd pick Wilson and Mane over Tadic and Sakho any day.

Defense needs a bit of re working too. Shaw and Jenkinson to Mertesacker and Cedric would serve you very well. Pantilimon could be a beast under the new baps system with the saves he makes, but I prefer clean sheet potential over save potential. Hence, I would go Ruddy/Butland over Pantilimon

Thank you! 🙂 I read an interesting article at the back end of last season on how keeping the two keepers from one team ended up gaining more points than doing a rotation, hence my choice, but it's something I have been pondering over, will continue to! Thanks for the input.. I think my team won't change toooo much before Saturday, but we will see, can't wait! Best of luck this season 🙂

      Schmeichel - Butland
      Azpi - Cedric - O'Shea - Martin - Francis
      Hazard - Sterling - Depay - Ozil - Milner
      Pelle - Lukaku - Wilson

In 2-3 GWs will be Pelle, Lukaku and Milner to Aguero, Deeney/Defoe and Sinclair

Don't plan too far ahead mate. It rarely works in FPL.

Schmeichel to Ruddy (better rotation) , O'Shea to Coates (more nailed on), Lukaku to Kane and Wilson to Jerome/Ighalo are the only changes I'd make

RMT - input much appreciated... Main concern is whether to put Hazzard in for Fab, loose Sterling and change Defoe for Sakho

      Cech

      Baker - Clyne - Fonte

      Depay - Hendo - Ozil - Fab - Sterling

      Rooney - Benteke

Subs: Hennessey - Defoe - Targett - Wisdom

I would definitely go with Hazard over Fab. The defense with Baker and Targett in there is a proble. Downgrade Hendo to Mahrez, and spend the extra on upgrading Baker and Targett. Also, I prefer Wilson to Defoe.

          Thanks... So... What about this...

          Fab -> Haz
          Ozil -> Ox
          Wisd -> Shaw
          Defoe -> Jerome

          So new line up

          Cech

          Shaw - Clyne - Fonte

          Depay - Hendo - OX - Haz - Sterling

          Rooney - Benteke

Subs: Hennessey - Jerome - Baker - Targett

I know the bench is weak but i'm not planning on using it.

      Strong overall, few caveats though.

      - I prefer Ward over Francis.
      - I'd try to stretch to 5.0 for Pantilimon or Mignolet.
      - Bellerin or Fonte over Mertesacker imo
      - Mahrez is a very risky punt, but I'm a fan of his upside.
      - I'm not a fan of Rooney, despite all the love he seems to get on here.
      - I'd rather have Ozil than Walcott, but again, I love Walcott's upside.

      1. Ludo
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

Francis is there not because I think he's the best pick in the world, but because his good fixtures are well timed - I wanted someone to cover Mertesacker in GW6 (he has Chelsea away), and Bournemouth play Sunderland at home then. Some decent ties in GW1 and GW4 could also come in handy.

Bellerin over Mert is one I've dabbled with... I've taken a couple of risks in midfield, I just felt the big German was a bit safer overall.

Mahrez and Walcott aren't really picks I'd recommend to someone else. I just think they'll get me off to a great start, and I'm chasing the upside that you mentioned.

Rooney... I agree with you, actually. I've really only got him as an Aguero placeholder - I don't think anyone else has a better opening three fixtures.

Thanks for the detailed response though, good food for thought!

    Ivan, Clyne Bellerin (Mariappa, Turner)
    HAz, Wallcot, Chadli, Richie (wanyama)
    Rooney, Kane, Sakho

I like my team but am just a bit unsure on my two 4.0 defenders.
Chose Mariappa because he has a really high 'Points per million' stat line when you consider he only played 1500mins last season
However am unsure if he will be a starter and if Turner from Norwich is as well?

    Thoughts?
    Cheers

According to BILD, Southampton are very keen on Schalke's Leon Goretzka. They're willing to pay up to €16m.

Great prospect as most FM enthusiasts will tell you.

Start on the weekend? Fairly certain. Start every week? Not so much

Safer to go with Mertersacker then for an Arsenal 5.5 option...?

Certainly safer. No question about that. Not a good choice though imo

Like it. Don't liek walcott though. An expensive risk.

Like the keepers, Rutland/Schmutland would be great but this is really cool too

Not sold on Coates, Bellerin and Bassong all together - if you get unlucky with nailedness/rotation, that could really really hurt.
      Midfield is great

Strikers are fine, not sold on Wilson (or cheap strikers in general) but that's just me

    Oxlade-Chamberlain.
6.0 mil, goals in preseason, likely starter with no Sanchez for first couple games. Am I mad? Haven't seen many considering him...

Seriously considering him for first 2 GWs then subbing out.
I agree seems odd no-ones thinking about him...
