A feast of Carling Cup action saw Aston Villa and Spurs dumped out by Bolton and Stoke respectively. Michael Owen grabs a brace as Man United cruise at Leeds, Blackburn win again and Newcastle show their resilience to end Steve McLaren’s cup hopes. Arsene Wenger reverts to 4-4-2, while Stuart Holden’s return gives Owen Coyle a timely boost. Here’s some Scribbles on last night’s action:

Blackburn recorded back-to-back wins for the first time since early January as they saw off Leyton Orient last night. The 3-2 scoreline was far more comfortable than it sounds- Yakubu made way for Jason Roberts up front and the latter opened the scoring with a penalty for Rovers, while new summer signing Simon Vukcevic marked his first start with a goal as the pressure on Steve Kean was eased a little further.

A first start of the season for Michael Owen saw the Man United forward grab two goals at Elland Road. United strolled to a 3-0 win, with Dimitar Berbtov partnering Owen up front, indicating the strength in depth Sir Alex Ferguson has at his disposal. Danny Welbeck also returned from a hamstring injury in a game that saw Berbatov finish the match at centre half for the league leaders. Antonio Valencia carried on from where he left off in the weekend game with Chelsea, taking to the field as United’s right-back, with Michael Carrick at centre half.

Alan Pardew made nine changes to his side as Newcastle travelled to Nottingham Forest. The Toon Army favourites conceded more goals last night than they have in the league all season- perhaps understandable, given the number of alterations to the starting XI. Peter Lovenkrands done his selection chances no harm with a brace in the 4-3 City Ground win, while the game also saw the return from injury of Hatem Ben Arfa, much to the delight of the travelling fans.

With his side facing their third match in just six days, Harry Redknapp also made nine changes to the Spurs lineup for the clash at Stoke. The visitors still fielded a strong starting XI- Rafael Van der Vaart and Roman Pavlyuchenko were the front two, while Sandro returned from a knee injury to boost Redknapp’s midfield options.

Tony Pulis’ Stoke were also taking part in their third game in six days. Much to the delight of their weekend opponents Man United, the subsequent extra time and penalties meant another gruelling match to their busy schedule and Pulis-unlike Redknapp- played pretty much a full-strength side for the Britannia match. Having already faced Chelsea and Liverpool at the Britannia. Stoke are now unbeaten against three of last season’s top six at home, though Fergie’s side will put that record to the ultimate test next Saturday evening.

Arsenal battled back against Shrewsbury to secure their place in the next round. The Gunners played a 4-4-2 formation, according to their official website, with Ju Young Park partnering Marouanne Chamakh up front. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was outstanding throughout and grabbed the goal that put the Gunners ahead, after they had slipped behind early on. Yossi Benayoun added the third as Arsene Wenger made eleven changes from the team that lost at Blackburn on Saturday lunchtime.

Wolves got back to winning ways with a 5-0 home triumph over Millwall. Having suffered two back-to-back Molineux losses, Mick McCarthy made sweeping changes to his side ahead of the trip to Liverpool this weekend and Dave Edwards excelled on his first game since February, opening the scoring on three minutes. Big Mick was satisfied with the win, saying post-match:

It was a much-needed victory for all of us and a good performance. We’ve had one bad performance against QPR. Everyone highlights it and it looks awful and it was awful. But it doesn’t make us a bad team or a bad group of lads.

Aston Villa tasted defeat for the first time this season under Alex McLeish as a poor home performance saw them dismissed by Bolton. Big Eck fielded a strong line-up, giving starts to the likes of Stephen Ireland, Marc Albrighton and Nathan Delfouneso, as he fielded Gabby Agbonlahor as a lone striker. Villa rarely threatened though and were booed off the field by their own fans, as McLeish admitted:

We were not good enough on the night and did not deserve it.We had our moments in the first half but we never troubled the keeper enough. We got into some good crossing positions but never made the impact we wanted. Now it is up to the team to bounce back. That is the reaction I am looking for.

Stuart Holden made his first-team comeback for Bolton in the2-0 win at Villa Park last night. Owen Coyle’s side bounced back from a run of four straight defeats with a comfortable Carling Cup win, with goal from Chris Eagles and Gael Kakuta ensuring their passage into the next round. It was Holden whom Coyle hailed post-match, saying:

Considering Stuart has been out for so long after an horrendous injury, for him to play with such intensity and at the level he did tonight, was great. I’ve always said we are a better team with him in it, not just because of his workrate but also the quality he brings when on the ball.

Kenny Dalglish was dealt an injury blow yesterday with the news that Daniel Agger is out for four weeks with two cracked ribs. The Dane seemed to pick up the injury in the build-up to Spurs’ opener at White Hart Lane on Sunday and his loss may see Sebastian Coates given a chance at the heart of defence for the weekend clash with Wolves. Alternatively, John Flanagan could come in at right-back with Martin Skrtel moving to the heart of defence.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez received a boost with some positive news on Hugo Rodallega. The Columbian was stretchered off in the weekend defeat at Everton and Martinez had initially feared losing the forward for a few months but said yesterday:

The scans came back really positively, it doesn’t seem there are any big concerns in terms of the structure of the knee. We won’t know how long he’s exactly going to be out but what’s clear is that the injury is not as bad as we first thought.

Given Wenger's poor record with nuturing young talent compared to others such as Ferguson or Moyes, perhaps the question Arsenal fans need to ask is not is the team's youth policy wrong, but is Wenger the right man to nurture the youth.

I say this as Oxlade Chamberlain did well. But will he be rewarded with a run out this weekend. Or will he rot in the carling cup and reserves like so many before him and eventually end up at Sunderland/Swansea etc.

For every Wilshire, Ramsey and Fabregas there's the mass Arsenal 'talent' graveyard of those that either got worse under Wenger or moved to other teams and got the tutelage they deserved.

    Just a thought.

Like United and Everton don't have a 'talent graveyard'?

      Horrendous bias in this post.

I think Man UTd's talent graveyard is less full than Arsenals.

Also Everton have an excellent record of nurturing young talent, as with a thin squad they have no option but to play them and give them chances.

I hope Oxlade Chamberlain does well...but I fear it may not be under Wenger.

BTW - I would add Walcott to Wenger's graveyard. Has he really got the best out of a player who could be an excellent striker but is played on the wing, a position where even one of England's greatest ever wingers Chris Waddle says Walcott is pants at.

          nonsense.

To suggest Wenger has a poor record of developing youngsters is crazy.

Every club has a history of poor players as well as ones that turned out well. Naming a few Arsenal flops doesn't prove a point.

Bellion, Djemba-Djemba, Chadwick, Bebe etc. doesn't mean Fergie can't develop players.

I'm not a Man Utd fan by the way. Fergie is helped by combining a youth policy with investment in the transfer market. Wenger relies too much on youth. If he does that surely he should be better at it.

If not he should spend some more cash. Like with Paul Jones for example, Blackburn wanted 1m more than their offer last Jan....they refused. They then offered 5m or so more in May...but by that pt Man Utd were in and that was the end of that.

              Its Phil Jones.

I think you're fishing now. Either that or your opinions are influenced way too much by the media's current witchhunt on Wenger, or you have a short memory.

              'Should be better at it'.

I could quite easily list a ton of players that Wenger has developed but thats pointless. As a football fan you should already know.

      Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Which players are those in that graveyard? You could also say that Arsenal under Wenger have produced a ridiculous amount of proper Premier League players in their academy that have gone on and done well for other clubs.

Take Seb Larsson for example, bought to Arsenal as a promising but not exceptional talent (16yo). Educated at Arsenal and now doing well for Birmingham/Sunderland, with qualities he obviously learned at Arsenal under Wenger.

If he had those qualities at Arsenal why didn't they keep him?

I'd argue that it was under Steve Bruce's tutelage at Birmingham where Larsson really began to shine.

Because he came through the ranks with so many other great talents and at a time when the older Arsenal players were also at a really high level. Had he come through now I think they'd have kept him. And also because perhaps he is not a player for a team with the goal of challenging for the title, but for the teams below that.

Every club have loads of players in their youth teams that you just never hear about but are still sacrificed.

Anyway I got to run off to school now, talk to you later.

I don't have him - I might buy him. Yes, I think he will get nearly as many assists and goals, and possibly more bonus, than Silva. It is just my opinion - no need for you to share it - but I do think that it is a valid opinion! 🙂

The bonus points are starting to pan out as I more or less expected, although I concede that B & B was closer to the mark on goals and assists ... 🙂

Ahhhh, you not having him makes it more intriguing! (not sure why)

Well I think he might get a little bonus here and there, maybe the odd assist, but with the way Silva and others are passing at the moment I think most of the goals are being put away by the strikers. Don't see Yaya having many shots, but I guess I haven't looked at the stats!

Lopez for Wigan (4.0) He seems to be filling in for Alcarez in the centre of defence for the next few months. Is he under any threat? I seem to remember Boyce playing at centre back before and Gohouri's coming back from injury. Anyone (other than Martinez) in the know?

    Given (Vorm)
    Kompany, Bosingwa, Brown, Simpson (NTaylor)
    Young, Silva, Cabaye (Brunt, Dyer)
    Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko

    2 frees, 0.3 in bank.

Probably going to keep Suarez for this week and give him one more chance, and can't get Aguero in without more than 2 transfers to free up money,

Thinking of perhaps transferring out Brunt for someone like Murphy, Petrov, Barton. Good use of a transfer, or do I stick as I am?

      I doubt it.

Wenger has only had success using a 4-4-2, but I don't think we've got the personnel at the moment to do it. A central midfield of Wilshire - Song is hardly Viera - Petit.

I'm still hoping Suarez will be suspended for his elbow on Parker in the Totteham match. The reason being, is that I just sold Suarez and bought Adebayor. It's tough to sell Suarez with a home match against a Wolves team not playing very well these days. In the long run, I figure Adebayor would be the better buy, plus would free you up 1.5.

      Personally Suarez
Has better fixtures and is due a goal, has looked dangerous, and by far Liverpools best in all games (besides Spurs) and I see him being heavily involved in the coming weeks.
Adebayor has been in pretty good form, but...if Liverpool didnt have 2 people sent off, would he have scored 1? let alone 2.
      Both good picks however

Well, like me, you've managed to get the Super Six in there although you went AY rather Nani.

I think Ruddy and Ferguson are a waste of time. Swap for Krul and Moses, Petrov, SWP. Bos or Enq will need to be downgraded as well.

Amazing team. Surprised you managed to have so many excellent players on one team. I think Ferguson is the only concern. Not sure about having a player in the midfield that won't even play. In defense it tends to be ok, but I always believe that all the midfielders should be involved in one way or another. Having said that, I would probably downgrade Enrique and free up some money for Moses in the midfield. Liverpool haven't looked too good defensively lately.

Thanks guys. I was thinking of downgrading Taylor (4.4) to a 4.0, and with the extra 0.1, I can upgrade Fergie to Bradley Johnson or Tiote (both 4.5).

But I worry that I lose a bit of rotational flexiblity in my def, as there are a no. of 4.5 bargain def that I can trade, depending on fixtures (stoke, sunderland, wigan). Was thinking that maybe I can afford a few weeks of zero points for 3rd sub. Thoughts?

Looking back on the past article, i agree with Garg that maybe Mata isnt gonna get a big score in one match like a Nani, Young, VDV or Walcott even. Thats why i kinda like Walcott in my team because because he is capable of a couple of goals or a hat trick in a game, has Mata got that explosive ability to do that? (Im not comparing the quality of the two players, purely from an FPL prosect) I think this is what is making me reluctant to go for Mata.

    Thoughts?

Frank Lampard was replaced by Nicolas Anelka at half-time but Villas-Boas attempted to play this down. "It was a decision we had to make bearing in mind the result at half-time [3-0 to United]. It was an attacking substitution not because Lamps was playing badly, he had a couple of interceptions. We [had] to adapt to a more attacking style, not that he doesn't have an attacking style, he is a fantastic player, he will be a key player for the rest of the season."

The issue with Lampard is that he doesn't want to play deeper...but if he wants to start games and play the full 90 then he needs to start thinking about dropping deeper...right now he's causing unnecessary commotion...well least the media are...either way...he'll play his part but for longevity sake...must drop deeper...or go where he can play his role...

And we should be confirming that very soon as well! Just like the same problems Charlie Adam has...and will have moving forward (zonal marking had a field day with him and KingKenny) Fat Frank will be given no time on the ball.

Is there a consensus of Dzeko's starting chances this w/e? I'm itching to swap him out for Adebayor but it doesn't make sense given the decent home fixture.

Chaps, Im finishing up my wildcard team and all looks good apart from I don't like my lack of Pool and Arse. I've always played this game 'playing the fixtures' but thsi season has seen that go to pot.

    So,

    A. Adebayor + Mata
    B. Suarez + Arteta

Currently with A but B is tempting me...hunch and all that.

Maybe not a mile, might of appeard a bit hasty there, but it does top it for me anyway. Ade is in form, and mata will shine....suarez is struggling and arteta is in...well....a 'losing' side' 🙂

Hmm... Close. I think Suarez will do better in the long run. I think Mata looks class and will have a great season. Arteta is surprisingly on a lot of set pieces. I don't trust Adebayor so I'd go B

Probably A as well. Form and fixtures on the side of A. Havent actually seen Arteta play but he's definately deeper than Mata. Not to mention Mata is taking a fair amount of set-pieces.

B has potential but since you are on a wildcard, you should milk A for what it's worth. Haha

With a good run on the price coaster I am able to get a squad of:

    Krul, Vorm

    Brown, Woodgate, Simpson, (Taylor, Gabbidon)

    Nani, Mata, Modric, Arteta, (Dyer)

    Aguero, Rooney, Adebayor.

    Unbeatable? Best team on paper?

    Tell me your thoughts?

Decent. But i can't see Newcastle or Swansea keeping up their defensive record. Doubling up is a massive risk, especially as their aren't many other options in that price bracket. The big teams will deliver clean sheets soon.

A good team but I personally wouldn't go with a defence like that for the rest of the season.

The big teams will tighten up and over the course will score better than the current cheapo lot.

If you are gonna go the 'top heavy' course though I'd consider

      Modric and Arteta OUT

      Silva and SWP/Taarabt IN

Is it strange that with the new layout i don't feel that taking a 4 point hit is so risky? With the old layout it seemed more of a waste but with this one it doesn't seem too much of an issue. I'm probably talking bollocks.

      On paper it should be

Rb: Rafael, Smalling and young rotating

      CB: Vidic

      CB: Rio and Jones rotating

      LB: Evra

With jones' form and injury worries wit rio, raf and Smalling he should be almost nailed on somewhere on the park. Great choice as a cheap entry into the unites defense.
