Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

With a whopping 58% of the vote, Sergio Aguero is the overwhelming favourite to post a big total this Gameweek. Indeed, the Sky Blues’ home tie against Watford could serve as the perfect platform for the former Atletico Madrid marksman to explode into life this term, following his blank against Everton last weekend. Although the Hornets boast back-to-back clean sheets, they face an entirely more threatening proposition in the league’s form side, who rank joint-first for shots on target (24) and second for big chances (seven). The favourable nature of City’s match-up also finds David Silva and Yaya Toure (both 3%) backed as armband differentials.

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez is second favourite, way back on 5%. Despite failing to score in two of their three matches so far, Arsenal have tallied more attempts (62) and shots inside the box (42) than any side in the league, which suggests the Chilean will be afforded a host of shooting opportunities at St James’ Park.

Chelsea’s Pedro (4%) takes third spot after his eye-catching debut at the Hawthorns racked up a 13-point return, courtesy of a goal, an assist and maximum bonus. A home clash against Crystal Palace – who have notched just two clean sheet in 21 league matches since Alan Pardew was appointed – could well harvest further returns for the defending champions. Eden Hazard owners will be observing Pedro’s performances closely over the coming weeks, given the Spaniard’s potential to serve as a cheaper route into the Blues’ midfield. Hazard and Diego Costa (3% apiece ) will be looking to push on after both recorded their first attacking returns of the season against the Baggies. The Blues placed second for shots inside the box (10) last Gameweek – despite contending with a one-man disadvantage from the 53rd-minute mark – which bodes well for the Eagles’ visit.

Riyad Mahrez has been tipped by just under 4% of the voters. Leicester City’s man of the moment ranks top of the league’s scoring charts, with four goals in three outings already matching his output from last term. The Algerian international will undoubtedly hit a dry patch at some point, yet with Bournemouth – who conceded three goals against West Ham last weekend – next on the Foxes’ agenda, Mahrez’ burgeoning ownership will be quietly confident.

Further down the list, there’s not much to separate Christian Benteke and Callum Wilson (2% apiece) who had contrasting fortunes in the last round of fixtures. The former spurned a gilt-edge chance to open the scoring against Arsenal, while the latter netted with three of his four attempts at goal. Benteke owners, though, will fancy the Belgian’s chances at home to a Hammers defence that’s been breached six times over the past two Gameweeks. Wilson’s growing throng of admirers will hope for more of the same as the Cherries play host to Leicester.

Wayne Rooney (1%) has plummeted down the Captain’s Poll in the wake of three successive blanks. The 10.4-priced frontman is the most transferred-out Fantasy recruit this week, reflecting the waning faith in his capacity to become a prolific scorer once more. Nonetheless, a hat-trick against Club Brugge in midweek could serve as the catalyst to kick-start his campaign, with a trip to Swansea next up for Manchester United.

Stoke duo Xherdan Shaqiri and Mame Biram Diouf also earn 1% of the votes cast ahead of the home derby with West Brom.

I like Kane's stats and next few fixtures. But have been looking at all options so I shall consider Lukaku. Worth it if it was Lukaku? Wish I could get Costa.

If you were/are WCing this week, aside from Kolarov, who goes in your defence for the 4.5m - 5m range?

Currently on: Lord K, Cedric, Gomez, Morgan, Naughton

Francis over Morgan IMO. Cedric has a good fixture, decent stats (2nd to Kolarov attcking-wise) and now they're out of Europa I expect them to improve.

      I'm wild carding and have

      Courtois
      Kolarov, Lovren

Then choosing two of these rotating - Francis, Richards, Prodl, Muniesa

However I might double up on Lpool with Gomez and one of the above

Hopefully this quenches all the Benteke rumors?

Rodgers expects to be choosing his XI to face West Ham United tomorrow from the same pool of players that were available for Monday’s goalless draw at Arsenal.

“No great changes from the squad that was in place for the last game,” was his assessment.

Could use some advice after a terrible start. Current team is

    Schmeichel
    Ivanovic, Cedric, Mertesacker
    Ozil, Depay, Yaya, Mahrez
    Aguero, Benteke, Pelle

    Schwarzer, Surman, Coates, Taylor

    0 ITB and 0 FT.

If Mert is ruled out, I don't really fancy Coates off the bench. Unfortunately I can't do Mert > Kolarov for a -4 so it would have to be a -8.

Question is who should I downgrade to free up some funds? Fortunately or unfortunately (whichever way you look at it) I can't see an obvious choice as they all have decent fixtures. Should I just play Coates and do Ivan to Kolarov next week instead?

    1. Moore FPL

    Gomis Wilson

Ah, I didn't put that too well!
        I'm playing Myhill over McCarthy
I'm playing Kolarov, Sanchez, Silva, Mahrez, Aguerro.
So I have to choose the remaining 6 from the 9 players above.
They all seem to have a case to start!

Would I be alone in thinking that if Man Utd don't sign anyone good by the end of the transfer window they should sack Woodward and van Gaal?

I genuinely think the prospect of having LvG as manager is putting players off signing, and with Guardiola likely available this summer they should focus on getting him? There's also the wild rumours about Bale, Neymar, Muller etc. which would suddenly seem a lot more viable with Guardiola as manager. Add to that that Man Utd have by and large been lethargic and have only actually scored one league goal, van Gaal has fallen out with Valdes and de Gea, and he clearly has no idea what he's doing, surely it would make sense to get rid of him if he doesn't drastically improve? Woodward clearly doesn't move fast enough to make signings either.

Disclaimer: I am not a Man Utd fan.

As a Man Utd fan, I really don't think Woodward or even LvG have been a failure. Sure the DDG contract situation and the Pedro transfer could have been handled better, but apart from that, everything has been peachy. Herrera, Darmian, Schwidfield, and don't forget Romero, have all been fantastic signings. Don't see a problem with Woodward at all.

As far as LvG, well we got to 4th while looking utterly desolate and uninspiring for most of the season. Similar start to this season but the important thing are points, not flair. Under SAF, the team was just as happy to grind out 1-0 results as it was to thrash their opponents. And with that respect, this season has so far been satisfactory.
LvG seems to have failed at really motivating the team but that alone, for the most part, isn't grounds for a sack. As long as they keep grinding out wins with the occasional burst in form, all is fine and dandy.

Any word on Henderson returning this week?

Failing that, would anyone consider a Depay > Coutinho?

I think Hendo is still 'doubtful'.

actually I think the vast majority of the population does all their transfers on Friday and doesn't bother with it the rest of the week

Really want Herrera to nail down a spot at 10, as a United fan firstly, but also as a fantasy option, I think he'd get his fair share of goals and assists! Could be a bargain at 6.8!

@wilshireK any arsenal rumours about strikers? Will you line up attacking wise against Newcastle like you did against Liverpool?

Just the usual Cavani, Higuain, Benzema rubbish.

How we line up, I'm not sure. I don't like the team as it is, but Wenger has been sticking by it, so I'd expect it to be unchanged, bar Kos probably coming in.

Bench boost question. I think the chip isn't of that great use but my bench is McCarthy, Richards, Hoolahan & Albrighton. All should play and probably as good fixtures as your going to get from a bench.

Tempted to use my bench boost. Should I do it or hold?

    Sánchez Silva Pedro Mahrez (Westwood)
    Kun Diouf Wilson
