Eden Hazard is named amongst the subs as Willian fires Chelsea to victory against Dynamo Kiev. Arsenal are hammered in Munich as their injury worries ramp up at the back, Son Heung-Min returns to contention for Tottenham, whilst Daryl Janmaat is expected to be available for Newcastle’s trip to Bournemouth.

Willian Wins it for Blues

Chelsea sneaked a 2-1 home win over Dynamo Kiev courtesy of an own goal and a sublime free-kick from Willian in the 83rd minute. Jose Mourinho opted to bench Eden Hazard, fielding Oscar (left), Cesc Fabregas (number ten) and Willian (right) in behind Diego Costa. Pedro made a return to the subs bench and was called into action at the 79-minute mark, but Branislav Ivanovic didn’t make the matchday squad.

The Scout Says: Willian has undoubtedly been the Blues’ most consistent performer on the attacking front and now boasts four goals and three assists across all competitions. As such, the tireless Brazilian seems certain to retain his starting berth when Chelsea lock horns with Stoke at the Britannia Stadium, though there are question marks over who will fill the other two slots behind Costa going forward. Certainly, given that Mourinho felt compelled to demote Hazard for their crucial Champions League clash against the Ukrainian giants, it would be no surprise to see the 11.0-priced midfielder benched for the second league match in four Gameweeks. With showdowns against Norwich, Spurs, Bournemouth, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford following on from their Britannia clash, Willian – at just 6.8 in FPL – is looking a real differential punt, with a mere 3% ownership.

Defensive Concerns for Gunners

Arsenal were comprehensively outclassed by Bayern Munich as they fell to a 5-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena. Assisted by Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud netted a consolation goal in the 68th minute to starve the hosts of a shut-out. Mathieu Debuchy and Gabriel filled in for Hector Bellerin and Laurent Koscielny, though the latter was fit enough for the bench after sustaining a minor hip problem. Whilst Koscielny is expected to be passed fit for Sunday’s clash with Spurs, Arsene Wenger is far less optimistic on the young Spaniard’s prospects:

“I don’t think Bellerin will be available for Sunday but there is a small chance. From tonight we don’t have any new injuries.”

The Scout Says: Notwithstanding his limited starts this term, Giroud has amassed eight goals for the Gunners in just 869 minutes of pitch time in all competitions. The surfeit of strong options among the full roster of mid-priced forwards has somewhat overshadowed the fact that the 8.7-priced Frenchman has blanked just twice in seven outings (two starts) and faces match-ups against West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, Sunderland and Aston Villa in the next four Gameweeks. Whilst his injury doesn’t look a long-term worry, Bellerin’s likely absence this weekend is a real blow for his 22% owners after he rose to second in the defender standings on the back of an assist and three clean sheets in the last four. Given that replacement Mathieu Debuchy had a torrid time against Danny Rose in the Gunners’ recent League Cup victory over Spurs, those Fantasy managers who’ve recruited the likes of Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen will feel a little more positive as Spurs look to breach a backline that’s conceded just once in their last four home matches at the Etihad.

Pochettino Handed Son Boost

Son Heung-Min has recovered from a foot injury and is available for selection when Tottenham Hotspur host Anderlecht on Thursday night – although Mauricio Pochettino is yet to decide whether he starts the South Korean winger. Elsewhere in the Lilywhites camp, Danny Rose is touch-and-go for the Europa League clash due to a dead leg but is expected to make the North London derby, while Nabil Bentaleb returned to training but is short of match fitness:

“Sonny is in the squad and in contention. We now have to decide if he plays from the beginning or if it’s better to put him on the bench. Nabil is training well but he’s not match fit yet. Danny is better, it was a dead leg but it’s not a big issue, he still has a chance, but we have a strong squad and if he isn’t 100% maybe we’ll wait until the next game.â€

The Scout Says: Considering that Mousa Dembele has scored in back-to-back matches and Erik Lamela notched a goal and an assist in his previous two starts, Son faces a tough task to immediately reclaim his starting berth. Nonetheless, the 7.9-priced forward has three goals in five appearances in all competitions and furnishes Spurs’ attack with pace it otherwise doesn’t possess, providing Pochettino with food for thought. Although Delle Alli has been hugely impressive since his switch from League One outfit MK Dons in the summer, Bentaleb could earn a share of starts alongside Eric Dier, thus lightening the load on the 19-year-old and averting the risk of burn-out. Pochettino could also utilise Dembele in a deep-lying role too, if he chooses to hand Son a quick return to the first XI.

Magpies Optimistic on Janmaat

Newcastle coach Paul Simpson revealed that Daryl Janmaat trained on Tuesday and could be passed for the Magpies’ trip to Bournemouth, having been forced off late against Stoke City with a knee complaint:

“We are hopeful that Daryl is available for the weekend. He just jarred his knee. He has trained on Tuesday but sat out of Monday, which was only a light session anyway.â€

The Scout Says: Over the last four Gameweeks, Janmaat managed just a single attempt on goal, marking a significant downturn in his goal threat of late. That being said, he’s displayed strong assist-potential over that stretch, with only three defenders racking up more key passes (six). Janmaat’s 3% ownership will be encouraged by the fact that Newcastle held the Potters to a 0-0 stalemate last time out and now embark on a decent trio of match-ups (bou, LEI, cry). The Cherries encounter looks particularly promising, given that no side has crafted fewer big chances (two) since Gameweek 8.

Help, my defence is in ruins : Kolorov, Bellerin (inj) Darmian(out), Richards(doubt), Targett (out)

    With only 1ft should I....

    a) swap Targett for VVD and just play Kolorov, VVD and BELL with Richards 1st Sub

    b) swap Targett for VVD and also take a hit swapping Richards for a playing defender

    c) swap Targett for VVD, and play AOA with Westwood as fifth attacker (westwood also a doubt)

    d) swap Targett for VVD, and also take a hit swapping Westwood to Willian (or Barkley) and play AOA

    Advice appreciated!

well bell might not play, not sure if Richards is fit again. depends how much you have to swap Richards for.
I never have problem taking hit for defender if it means I have better player. as in last week I did davies- VVD for hit, got my -4 back straight away but would easily have got it back within next few weeks

as I said it depends on who you are talking about, if you can only afford rubbish players then it may not improve your chances of CS , so sticking with Richards until you have spare FT.
difference from my situation is next week you can expect to have kolo, bell and VVD all starting. Though if at some time in near future kolo becomes a rotation risk you may need to sort that out.

Defence is giving me a headache; Darmian (suspended, rotation risk), Bellerin (injury, don't know how bad?), Kolarov (rotation risk), Richards (want to get rid of him.. City next game), Williams (close to suspension,,).

Have 1 FT, and i really want to save to get Aguero in again. Not sure what to do. Anybody have any insight into Bellerin's injury and/or how big the rotation risk for Darmian or Kolarov will be? Who should I transfer out first? Or should I just save FT? (Thinking about transfering Richards out for a 3.9 player who won't play so i get more ITB and an AOA given Bellerin won't play; attack and mids are pretty solid)

Any opinions or insights will be greatly appreciated!

AOA is a good option for you if your attack is strong. Its as good a week as any when your defence is so weak.

Unfortunately my fifth mid is Westwood, so AOA would be a waste unless I take a hit and swap him out.

Im playing my AOA Chip this week and have 1 FT to optimise my defence, which combo is best?

A: Butland + Monreal (save transfer)
    B: Butland + Van Dijk
    C: De Gea + Monreal

(Would be droppinr Muniesa for Van Dijk, Butland for DDG)

Just done a VERY quick and dirty check of who scores and concedes most home/away in terms of this weeks fixtures and thought I'd share the results.

This 'analysis' (ha!) doesn't take into account quality of previous opposition, underlying stats, injuries, etc. and is probably only one step up from astrology so draw conclusions at your own peril.

    Key
    -------
    Home = Home Team
    Away = Away Team
Avg HG = Average number of home league goals scored by the home team this season
Avg AC = Average number of away league goals conceded by the away team this season
Avg HC = Average number of home league goals conceded by the home team this season
Avg AG = Average number of away league goals scored by the away team this season
XHG = 'Expected' home goals (simple average of home goals scored and away goals conceded)
XAG = 'Expected' away goals (simple average of away goals scored and home goals conceded)

    http://imgur.com/Wqc4VyV

If we place any credence in these numbers then Man Utd look nailed for a clean sheet this week. Man City also look good and then West Brom, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace(!)

Goals seem likely from Leicester, Watford, Bournemouth and Everton. A bad week for the heavy hitters?

"only one step up from astrology" - my favourite kind of analysis 🙂

Man United has to be the safest bet for a clean sheet this week. Best defence vs one of the worst attacks.

As for heavy hitters - City a shout at Villa surely? Does Lukaku not count as a heavy hitter? 😉

    Morning all!

On the idea of new chips, you could have a 'Blue Shell' chip that will steal all the points from the no. 1 ranked player in the world or in your leagues. 😛

If the player in 1st place used it, would he just get his own points?
Or would he get the player in 2nd's points, ultimate blocking mechanism in GW38.

I almost never actually get to see the football on boxing day but we're staying in Ireland this year so might get away with it - missus is good like that.

Last year I had signal and saw that Sanchez (c) had missed a penalty - wasn't happy. Lost signal until way past FT so was happy to see the end result 🙂

I find I usually do okay on boxing day - I remember deliberating over Tevez and VdV captain one year - both ended up scoring 16 points

    1. Would you get (A) Monreal or (B) Moreno for fixtures till Jan?
    2. Would your answer be different if you have Mignolet already?

Arsenal is having an injury hit and the CS potential may be adversely affected?

A lot of those injured players are due back in a few weeks, and Debuchy is the only weak link.

      I would get Monreal.

        • 11 Years
        10 years, 1 month ago

thanks, agree that Debuchy is the weak link, and Chambers too (if he plays)

I have the cash but Monreal is 0.2 and 0.1 cheaper than Bellerin and Kosc now, looks a bargin.

Think Moreno also has good fixture ahead and I should get him despite of having Mignolet, probably GW 14.

        But what Defenders to drop?
Huth has been getting chances so could be due a goal.
Berty with an assist last week playing a terrible Sunderland team.
Francis is one of the most creative defenders in the league against a leaky toon.
        Kolorov is Kolorov

I suppose my only saving grace would be for Bellerin to be out and i can pick straws for the others if I go AOA?

Non-FPL concerns aside - just imagine if it's 1-1. Carrick and Brunt goals.....

Any suggestion on a budget defender that I should transfer Huth out for??

Already have Azpi, Mert, Cathcart & Sagna.

Not sure about bringing in Ward as I already have Hennessey

Depends on if you have enough in your bank but Moreno at 4.7 is good value.

If you can give me a good trade on the draft game, I'm a willing volunteer 😉

Is Deolofou now nailed on in the Everton midfield?

Not nailed on yet, I wouldn't say. Doolittle should help.

Not nailed on, should be first choice most weeks but with Kone, Naismith, Mirallas, Lennon, Osman and Pienaar all knocking around he'll never be a sure thing. Fantastic player though, I and most Everton fans I know want him to be first name on the team sheet.
